It looks like audiences were very curious about this new version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as they came out in numbers to see this helping it to earn $55.3 million in it's opening weekend. Reviews have been good; 83% out of a 136 reviews at RottenTomatoes.com.

Opening in second place was Wedding Crashers which made $32.2 million with luke warm reviews at 72% out of 104 reviews at RottenTomatoes.com.

Falling to third place after one week at the top was Fantastic Four making $22.7 million and $100.1 million total.

In fourth place was War of the Worlds with $15 million and a $192.1 millon total.

And rounding out the top 5 is Batman Begins with $5.6 million and a $182.7 million total. It should definately make $200 million by the end of it's run.

Next weekend is a busy weekend for movies with 4 new movies opening. First up is director Michael Bay's new movie The Island with Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johansson, Djimon Hounsou, Michael Clarke Duncan, Steve Buscemi, Sean Bean, Shawnee Smith, and Noa Tishby. What summer wouldn't be complete without a Michael Bay movie right? :p

Then we have yet another remake in The Bad News Bears starring Billy Bob Thornton.

Next we have Rob Zombie's sequel to House of a 1000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects.

And finally we have Hustle and Flow with Terrence Howard, DJ Qualls, Ludacris, Taryn Manning, Anthony Anderson, and Isaac Hayes.

Here are your numbers....

1) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory- $55,380,000 ($55,380,000) NEW!
2) Wedding Crashers- $32,225,000 ($32,225,000) NEW!
3) Fantastic Four- $22,725,000 ($100,137,000)
4) War of the Worlds- $15,000,000 ($192,191,000)
5) Batman Begins- $5,620,000 ($182,726,000)
6) Mr. & Mrs. Smith- $5,050,000 ($168,092,000)
7) Dark Water- $4,409,000 ($18,685,000)
8) Herbie: Fully Loaded- $3,355,000 ($55,702,000)
9) Bewitched- $2,400,000 ($56,870,000)
10) Madagascar- $2,100,000 ($183,875,000)
11) Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith- $1,625,000 ($373,848,000)
12) March of the Penguins- $1,344,000 ($3,840,000)

Charlie was a great family film, and I'm surprised it didn't make more. Burton and Depp score again.

F4 only fell to the new movies that opened this week, and still managed to break 100 mil in it's second weekend. Not a bad haul for a movie savaged by critics.

I have mixed feelings about Bad News Bears. It could be a big hit, or it could bomb horribly. Either way, I'm not sure wether I want to see it opening weekend or not.

It just goes to show you: people love seeing annoying children get mutilated in a candy-surrounded environment.

Look at Wedding Crashers go! It looks like R-rated comedy can still hold its own in this ill-defined PG13 world we live in.

Fan4 dropped a lot more than I thought it would. I thought it'd barely pull in $30million or a number in the high 20-millions, not the low 20-millions. Still, it's holding its own.

Next week, prepare for Michael Bay. Will this movie be a critically panned box office hit (like all of his other movies), or a critically praised box office hit? Because we all know it's going to haul in a ton of money.

Bad News Bears...
You know, I'm really getting tired of all these remakes. It doesn't help that HBO has been playing the original movie non-stop for the past couple of weeks, either.

It would appear that Fantastic Four is going to wind up performing more or less equivalently to Batman Begins... which is indeed a peculiar notion, but that's Hollywood for you.

Anyhow, yet another week with no big surprises. I expected Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to come out on top, though I have no idea how well it'll be able to stick around in the coming weeks. It's hard to tell with so many high-profile releases flying around. The Wedding Crashers also performs about what I would have expected it to, what with the R rating. It's a decent flick with some solid laughs, but it's not a great comedy by any means.

Speaking of Batman Begins, it's hard to get a bead on whether or not the film is really all that successful. It's obviously critically and fan acclaimed, but with a truly massive budget and market campaign, and the prominence of its lead character in the pop culture zeitgeist, I'm sure there are people who were expecting it to do better.

Finally, nice to see March of the Penguins crack the top 12. It's a good movie, and great to look at.

Next week... I expect The Island will do reasonably well for itself, as advance reviews seem to be positive, and, well, it's a Michael Bay movie. I'm not terribly excited about it, so I don't know if I'll get around to seeing it, Scarlett Johansson (in Latin she'd be Babia Majora) notwithstanding. I don't much care about The Bad News Bears either, as much as I like Richard Linklater.

And The Devil's Rejects will flop. It's just too overshadowed by other stuff.

Everyone here knows I consider Michael Bay as one of the main reasons why civilization is slowly crumbling but he does make a successful popcorn flick. The Island will likely be #1 next week.

Not surprising to see Charlie blast off like that. $55 million is a great haul, and I don't see any movie beating it, should stay at #1 next weekend. I knew Wedding Crashers would do good, but wow, it made a lot more than I expected it to. I was thinking low 20's, but apparently the R rating didn't hold it back from bringing in the tickets.

F4 did about as well as I thought, perhaps a few million less, still is holding its own against the stiff competition. I don't know if it'll make $200 million domestically like Batman appears to be on its way to do, but I think $150 is easily reachable. Also Nice to see Sith still hanging around, I think it was twelfth last week, and this week it moved up to eleventh! It'll probably finish around $385 or so, it doesn't look optimistic to reach $400, which so few movies have done in their run.

Most of the new movies, I don't see affecting the top 5, with the exception of the Island. It looks like a great movie, Mcgregor and Johansson make a lethal combination. I don't see it topping Charlie though. I see Charlie, Island, Wedding Crashers, F4 & WoW as the top 5 next week.

Can you explain this quote? I thought 60% = Fresh at RT.com so I'm not sure what you mean by lukewarm? Thanks.

Also I refuse to see a movie that condones the butchering of children! Even annoying Children!

Well this week played out pretty much like I expected. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=145455) is a predictable number one, whether its Johnny Depp, seeing how it compares to the Gene Wilder film or getting a more true representation of the book, just about everyone had a reason to check this one out.

I don't know whether or not Wedding Crashers (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=145530) will herald the return of the R-rated comedy as many have proclaimed, but it did decent so that's something.

Fantastic Four (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=144879) crossing $100 million is good in my book. Regardless of budget, I'd call this a success.

And Batman (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=143296) is approaching $200 million, with DVD sales I don't think it's going to be any sort of a failure money-wise.

Great news since 34 of the top 5 movies were awesome (Charlie, Batman, FF), while 1 (WotW) was pretty good.

It isn't surprising that CatCF took #1 as it was a very enjoyable movie. I'm surprised to see Wedding Crashers doing so well, but it is getting great reviews.

Next week is The Devil's Rejects and I cannot wait. I found House of 1000 Corpses to be an enjoyable movie. Anyone else seeing it next week?

However, I just cannot see any movie taking the top 3 spots. I hope Stealth bombs badly in 2 weeks though.

I was surprised how much money it made. I expected a certain book's release to happer movie sales...

Strong performance by Charlie, but it really tumbled over the weekend. A $20 million Friday should have put it over $60 million total easily.

Great to see the Wedding Crashers kicking tail. Let's hear it for R rated comedies! And about this "lukewarm" business, come on, it's currently got 7.6 on IMDB. That's fantastic. Comedies almost never score above 7.

Boy, FF really took it on the chin, falling more than 60%. Marvel still can't find a runaway hit outside its top two.

For those knocking Bad News Bears - have you seen the clips? Billy Bob looks hysterical in this one. It's got School of Rock's director and I think Bad Santa's writer. Hard to do much better.

I'm a big fan of Bay's good movies (Bad Boys, The Rock), so hopefully The Island will rank among them.

Ah, there's the effect I thought would happen. Imagine if CotCF hadn't been opening against Potter this weekend? Everyone saw it Friday so they could read Sat and Sun. :p

Yes, There is SUCH a biasm with WC & CATCF, Wedding Crashers brought in $32 million, when's the last time an R-rated comedy did that great. I just got back from it...awesome, the crowd was clapping, This film will be a word of mouth hit, believe me, I expect it to top $100 million EASILY

Even funnier is that he admitted to be GENUINELY drunk during the filming of Bad Santa!

Great to see the R-rated comedy seeing a comeback! Hopefully WC's success is good news for other R-rated comedies!

Actually I didn't. Granted, it was a lot more funny than School of Rock (the one with Jack Black right?), but I just couldn't get into it.

The Bad News Bears remake is from the School of Rock director and the writers of Bad Santa? Now I'm interested in seeing it.

I was actually hoping that F4 would do bad. What can I say? I'm a DC Comics fan and I'm tired of hearing all the hype for every Marvel movie that comes out. In my opinion X-Men has been the only series that seems to know how to do it right. Regardless of how much Spider-Man has made I think the movie's acting has been awful and the special effects are pretty bad as well. The success of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory doesn't surprise me because of the kids that you know are going to drag their parents to see multiple times. But honestly Gene Wilder is the man and always will be.:)

Wedding Crashers is pretty damn good. It was probably the best comedy since Team America or Harold & Kumar, it had the whole audience laughing & clapping. It was also sold out at 10:50 showing!

It was also sold out at 10:50 showing!I'll agree Wedding Crashers was good, but Charlie is the better film and will blow it away at the box office. I don't even understand why Wedding Crashers went for the R rating. The nudity was throwaway, and by limiting the f-bombs they could have gotten a PG-13 rating (and the bigger crowds that come with it).

I'm sorry but the amount of Theatres the Island got this weekend there is no way it will get over 40 million. Also the Way Charlie is going right now it will be I wouldn't be surprised if it got over 30 million this weekend.

I'm sorry but the amount of Theatres the Island got this weekend there is no way it will get over 40 million. It's not getting a super-huge wide release?

EDIT: Whoa. At the nearest multiplex (30 screens), Charlie is on 6 screens this weekend. The Island is only on 4. What does that tell me? Not much. 4 screens is still a lot, it just seems like less since 6 is a more bigger lot.
And at the local 13-screen, the ratio is 3-1 in favor of Charlie. Even Wedding Crashers has 2 screens. I don't get it. It's July, it's Michael Bay, it's PG-13. What gives?

More bigger lot.
