View Full Version : Is there an anti-cat bias on CN?

As a cat fancier myself (just go to my sig and check out the site for my own furball), I've been wondering if there's been an anti-cat bias on CN in recent years. First they take off Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes (with Sylvester, natch) and relegate it to Boomerang. On Atomic Betty, Betty isn't too crazy about her mother's cat Percy. Milkshakes on The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy seems to act stupid and likes to use Billy as a human scratching post. About the only positive portrayals have been Ami and Yumi's cats on Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi.

Does there seem to be an anti-cat bias on CN or am I just imagining this?

If there WAS CN has made up for it by Streaky being the awesomest character on Krypto the Superdog.:)

Edit: Also note that on Baby Looney Tunes Sylvester DOESN'T get beat up although that is hardly a great example.

Tom and Jerry still airs weekend mornings. If they hated ctas, I'm sure it would be on at all.

Oh, I'm pretty sure the anti-dog bias they have going on is more important than this bunch of nonsense.

I don't think so considering Streaky is a good guy in Krypto.

Toonmaster, why must you be so rude?

Anyway, I don't really think there really is any bias on cats or dogs on CN. The thing with the cats being evil is just a cliche that really needs to die. Come on, there are very sweet animated cats as well as real-life ones (like my two little kitties).

Cartoon Network has nothing to do with these anti-cat elements you're noticing. Take a look at all networks and you'll noticed that most cats portrrayed as a stereotype. They are often shown as lazy, egotistical, prissy, power hungry, greedy, and so on. This has been going on for a long time, considering Looney Tunes and Atomic Betty (shows with 50+ years difference) both show this.

I think cats are just an animal that projects some negative personality traits to humans on first contact. Anyone that owns a cat knows there are many sides to the species' character.

Tom gets beaten up a lot by that evil mouse.

On Atomic Betty, Betty isn't too crazy about her mother's cat Percy.
Don't forget, Betty's main villain, Maximus, looks like a Siamese cat...just like Percy.

Mind you, I'm not saying that all cats are angelic creatures. Laptop himself has a mischievious streak in him. He thinks he's the reincarnation of the Lincoln-Mercury cougar and tries to "attack" my mother and I at times. He also has a tendancy to bat at the paper inside the paper bail of the fax machine and wreck it, causing it to jam. He also doesn't like to have his tummy rubbed, be brushed, or wear a harness and leash. He also has a rather disconcerting way of licking my shirt whenever I do hold him and he's in one of his purring moods.

BTW, he does have a cartoonish-looking face, kind of like Sylvester in a way. :sylvester

looney toons are racist in 2nd degree or w/e it's called. Here's an example

Papa smurf wears red, the smurfs wear white. What Klan wore same colors on their rallies? thats right...
The bad guys had some sort of color black embeded in them. like a shirt, a coat, etc

in looney toons, daffy duck is black (i don't mean to offend anyone) buggs, has white on him. the skunk is french, speedy gonzales always sayign arriva arriva andale(i have yet to see a hispanic person say andale) and so on... so i don't think its on cats, but probly because the older cartoons have bad messages hidden in them and the pscologists in there )trust me they got some sort of psycologists in there) find out, or they get too many complaints.

What? Your logic seems to fall apart at the seams right when you cite an example from The Smurfs which doesn't make any sense. Gargamel wears black because that's what your stereotypical villain wears and the Smurfs are a race of blue things that happen to wear white pants and hats.

Secondly, the Looney Tunes cartoons were never meant to be in any way racist. Sure they seem like it now but back then they weren't thought as such and reflect the ignorance of the times. Even the World War II shorts were just a why to make fun of the enemy and cheer americans up. Making cartoons to that degree in any other time frame though would be considered racist. Finally the color of Daffy's feathers makes him no more of a black character then Bugs' white fur makes him a white character, they are animals by the way so there is no ethnicity involved between them.

Toonmaster, why must you be so rude?"I, rude?" Well, I never sometimes.

EDIT - Because I am a man of stature. And statues have to be tall to be recognized.

umm, I really don't mean to be rude. But excatlly why would Cartoon network be biased against cats.

Theres no logic in it at all....

I just remembered this movie I went to see some years ago in a theater where these dogs fight evil cats. And the cat leader is some fluffy bossy fur ball which pretends to be a cutie in front of the owner, but actually hates her and is a evil genius tyrant based on dominating the world. That proves CN themselves didn't stereotype cats to be evil.

Didn't Cartoon Network air "Cats Don't Dance" last year?

I know I'm a little late chiming in, but CN couldn't be too biased against cats or they wouldn't have Streaky the Supercat as one of the heroes on "Krypto the Superdog." Streaky's one of the coolest cartoon cats to come along in some time and he steals the show.

However there are three main evil cats on krypto, mechanicat, snookie, and Isis.

I`ve always wondered who got the idea that cats are evil. I always wanted Tom to win when I watched tom and jerry a a kid, and I wished he would just CHEW before he eats him so he can`t light a match in his stomcah like he did so many times.

I don't believe this is true, years ago they had the popular action show Swat Kats: The Radical Squadron (http://kishikat.com/zone/), which feature Humanoid Cat Beings. So CN can't be anti-cat huh?

If you watch the Gene Deitch's T&Js, you would know that there is an anti-cat bias in his T&J cartoons!
