For those of you who are in the know about the Gatchaman franchise and have been watching Boomerang this past couple of years, last April, Battle of the Planets (the 1st dub of Gatchaman dating back to the late '70s) began its short stint on Boomerang, becoming the first anime to ever air on Boomerang. Boomerang apparently only got the rights to 20 of the 85 episodes and cycled those until last October, when the show was yanked from Boomerang and moved to the much-more obscure Anime Network, where it currently resides today.
G-Force:Guardians of Space (the 2nd US dub of Gatchaman dating back to the late '80s) was the first anime ever to air on Cartoon Network (even though it was neutered to and treated as an "action cartoon") and got it's first ever full run on the network when it debuted on it exactly 10 years ago this summer. Apparently the G-Force dub is owned by Turner themselves, yet they still went about licensing the airing rights to BotP for Boomerang when they could've saved money by putting G-Force on Boomerang, since it's one of the handful of shows from the early CN years that remains in limbo. But it (G-Force) was yanked from CN (and national television for that matter) by early 1997, and aside from a small forgotten stint has never been seen on national television again. Then, last year Anime Network bought the airing rights to G-Force and aired a handful of it's 85 episodes on it until shelving it in favor of BotP when it arrived. To this day it remains shelved.
On top of that, ADV (the owners of Anime Network) have created their own dub (the 3rd in the US) of the Gatchaman show which is coming out any day now and will eventually air on AN. Why on earth do they have the rights to 3 different dubs of the same show? Now only is it pointless and selfish, but it'll create a mass confusion in the viewers not knowing which show is which. If they're not going to do anything with G-Force, then let go of those rights and let Boomerang air it! Because Boomerang badly needs an action show now, and with '90s shows finally making headway into the channel the time is ripe for G-Force to debut and kick the action quota up a couple of notches. Then again, it is supposed to be quite a violent show (yet it's still rated Y7 FV). Channels like Boomerang & AN are the only hope left for the obscure G-Force, which will never see a full home video release.
So, what do you think?
