View Full Version : What are the chances of G-Force: GoS coming to Boomerang?

For those of you who are in the know about the Gatchaman franchise and have been watching Boomerang this past couple of years, last April, Battle of the Planets (the 1st dub of Gatchaman dating back to the late '70s) began its short stint on Boomerang, becoming the first anime to ever air on Boomerang. Boomerang apparently only got the rights to 20 of the 85 episodes and cycled those until last October, when the show was yanked from Boomerang and moved to the much-more obscure Anime Network, where it currently resides today.

G-Force:Guardians of Space (the 2nd US dub of Gatchaman dating back to the late '80s) was the first anime ever to air on Cartoon Network (even though it was neutered to and treated as an "action cartoon") and got it's first ever full run on the network when it debuted on it exactly 10 years ago this summer. Apparently the G-Force dub is owned by Turner themselves, yet they still went about licensing the airing rights to BotP for Boomerang when they could've saved money by putting G-Force on Boomerang, since it's one of the handful of shows from the early CN years that remains in limbo. But it (G-Force) was yanked from CN (and national television for that matter) by early 1997, and aside from a small forgotten stint has never been seen on national television again. Then, last year Anime Network bought the airing rights to G-Force and aired a handful of it's 85 episodes on it until shelving it in favor of BotP when it arrived. To this day it remains shelved.

On top of that, ADV (the owners of Anime Network) have created their own dub (the 3rd in the US) of the Gatchaman show which is coming out any day now and will eventually air on AN. Why on earth do they have the rights to 3 different dubs of the same show? Now only is it pointless and selfish, but it'll create a mass confusion in the viewers not knowing which show is which. If they're not going to do anything with G-Force, then let go of those rights and let Boomerang air it! Because Boomerang badly needs an action show now, and with '90s shows finally making headway into the channel the time is ripe for G-Force to debut and kick the action quota up a couple of notches. Then again, it is supposed to be quite a violent show (yet it's still rated Y7 FV). Channels like Boomerang & AN are the only hope left for the obscure G-Force, which will never see a full home video release.

So, what do you think?

I don't know. Chances seem slim since CN no longer has the rights. If they got them back, it would be BECAUSE they want it on Boomerang, but I doubt.

Funny thing, G-Force does air on Boomerang Latin America.

Which rights are you talking about? The airing rights or the rights to the show?

Apparently G-Force was dubbed in 3 languages: English, Spanish & Portuguese. So lucky for them out there who still get to watch it.

You sure it's "G-Force" and not BotP undergoing the familiar alias "G-Force" that's airing on CNLA?

I'm pretty sure it's G-Force.

And aren't "Rights to the show" and "Airing rights" the same thing?

Well, "airing rights" are the rights to air the show, whether it'd be on the show's native network (owned by the same company the show's owned by) or on another network.

Owning the show is another story. And i still don't know to this day who owns G-Force: Turner? Hearst/King Features? Sandy Frank? ADV?.................

I recently got "The Best of G-Force" DVD, and in one of the episodes at the end of the credits the circa 1980's "Turner Program Services" logo (seen in early episodes of Captain Planet) appeared yet in another episode the usual King Features distribution logo appeared. And in the credits and back of the DVD, Sandy Frank is listed as the copyright owner. Damn I'm confused. WHO OWNS THE RIGHTS TO G-FORCE!!!!!!

Oh, and a sticker on the DVD as well as a brief title sequence on the DVD has Anime Network's fingerprints on it. Even more confusion.

The one of reasons I heard for Battle Of The Planets airing on Boomerang may have been do to Sandy Frank Productions working with Cartoon Network or Warner Bros. on possibily producing a new Battle Of The Planets movie or even series. I don't know if there's any truth to it, but it's no secret that SF have been trying the ressurrect the franchise.

As far as who owns the rights to the G-Force: GoS Dub? I thought for sure Turner did, but now you mention King Features. I do know one thing Hearst doesn't list G-Force in it animation syndication package.

As for the DVD, could Sandy Frank Productions have acquired the series? Or SF could own the NA copyright to the anything relating to the series. That could explain why SF could now own G-Force: GoS dub as well, that would also mean ADV could possibly be working with SF or atleast SF is getting money for the new dub if indeed own NA rights over anything Gatchaman.

Well, Sandy Frank was in the copyright on the show's credits............

I am not 100% sure but as far as i know BoTP never came to LatinAmerica, we only got G-Force as far as i remember. I even think that it'd be more probable that they would get it directly from japan instead of buying so many versions of it from the US. But i don't remember ever watching a ending so i think it is likely it was G-Force(though it WAS pretty violent).
It is rare when they get the USA edits of shows, examples are Pokemon adn Yu Gi Oh. that just aired in the US before.

G-Force has the horrible stigma of forever being confused with the Battle of the Planets dub. (In both shows the team's name is G-Force and the ships' name is the Pheonix. BotP fans affectionally call/refer to their show "G-Force" at times. When the G-Force dub was created a whole lot of confusion let loose, and the result was the almost universal lambasting of the G-Force dub due to the confusion its caused and because BotP fans regard it as an inferior product to their show) To this day its known to many who still remember it as "The Cartoon Network dub of BotP. I'm probably one of the handful of G-Force: GoS fans in the world, and even I'm thinking of jumping ship with the new, superior ADV Gatchaman dub out and me having my eyes opened to G-Force's obvious flaws (besides the constant backbeat score......... thump thump.............thump thump.......... one of the if not the main factor that drove people away from this show). But its still a symbolic and nostalgic show for me, its just that it isn't as magical as i remembered it to be. But that happens as you grow up.

If that were the case, then I seriously doubt SF would have allowed an uncut Gatchaman dub to be made, especially with the amount of hype ADV gave it.

I figure ADV must've had to have gotten through Sandy Frank somehow in their quest to create a dub for Gatchaman. I figure Sandy Frank's grip on Gatchaman in the US is akin to Harmony Gold's grip on Macross/Robotech in the US. Apparently, both have softened up recently as ADV has snapped up the dubbing rights to both of their original series. :p

Sandy Frank surely must've had a hand in trying to wipe the G-Force dub from existence. Turner doesn't give a damn about it anymore, while Hearst rarely airs it outside of the US. Now the show's on AN in limbo while BotP gets numerous runs (Gatchaman has been added to the show list, so BotP might join it in limbo soon)
