Apologies that this is a day or so late, but I've been very busy this Memorial Day weekend. Anyway, here's the cartoon of the week, a Robert McKimison classic from 1949!

The plot: Porky and his dog go duck hunting, but they didn't count on a feathery pest named Daffy!

The dog puts on a sympathy act, so Daffy ends up going home with the two and raising hell with the dog while Porky tries to get some sleep upstairs. And hilarity ensues.
This is one of my favorite McKimison cartoons of all time, not only for the excellent animation but for his attention to comic timing.

The voice acting, as always, is stellar, but Mel Blanc's talent really shines through in this one. Everyone is just right- Daffy is loony without being completely "woo-hoo woo-hoo!" for seven minutes, and has just enough prankness in him without going over the top with mean-spiritedness like in some of the later cartoons. Porky is the perfect straight man to the zaniness (in fact, I often like the cartoons where he's the butt of the jokes than when everything goes great for him), and the dog is uneasily stuck in the middle.

The wild takes are rubbery and have the perfect mix of squash and stretch without going overboard, and like I've said before, I love the snappy animation of McKimison, which really comes through in sight gags like these:

Overall, I give "Daffy Duck Hunt" an A. And remember, don't open until Christmas! ;)
