Has anyone seen the classic Popeye DVDs that are out? I picked one up today from Cracker Barrel. It looks great. I love the old Popeye cartoons from the 30s.

Unfortunately, that's an unofficial release with nothing but public domain shorts. Popeye has yet to have an official release, be it video, laserdisc or DVD.

So are the rights of popeye still up in the air?

IMO, one Popeye DVD package done right is the 2-disc version by VCI Entertainment (with all the PD Fleischer and many of the '50s Famous shorts nicely restored). It's not too expensive, either. But you'll probably have to find it online.

Nope, I've seen those while on vacation too ... he found it at a Cracker Barrel Country Store, one of a chain of combination family restaurants/imitation general stores mostly (I think) in the Midwest and South.

And while I didn't pick one up myself, at least packaging-wise, that Popeye DVD didn't seem much different from the more familiar runs of $1.99 PD packages. (The DVD racks at the store we visited also contained typical low-priced Betty Boop and Superman discs, alongside the equally typical Andy Griffith and Dick Van Dyke sitcom collections.)

Yea I have that one. But I want more popeye! I want more complete collections! There are so many good ones! It's just not fair :(

The VCI collection has all the Popeyese that are PD, but you might want to grab it fast. While the cartoons might have fallen into public domain, the theme song hasn't. There might be lawsuits soon.

Are you serious? This really really sucks. Instead of making money off complete popeye collections they’re making lawyers richer!

Also, doesn’t this version have stuff not in the VCI?

Well, I suppose "stuff" is a good word for what's in this set ... lots of the King Features Syndicate made-for-TV Popeye cartoons circa 1960. While they too have their fans, these toons are very much an acquired taste.
