For some strange reason, curiosity, boredom, whatever. (probably because I have been getting too much spam?) I dont know. I looked up oldtoonguy at google..Google is watching us at toonzone.. Why? I don't know. I wouldn't be surprised if anyone with a large number of posts, perhaps any number of posts, is listed at google, anyone. Now life is strange...Quite frankly, I don't want "oldtoonguy" at google. And it isnt' one post, or two, it is many of my posts, are being kept by google. I would like to hear what you think of this, because what you have written may have been googled too, they give a link to send a private message to you.Spammers can pick us up, Why not? George Orwell wrote about this in l984, Big Brother is watching old toon guy...and the rest of us maybe. Google takes you directly to your post..check it out. It is truely frightening.I guess I should have know, anything on the web, is available to anyone...I signed up at a board, Last year, to find out about a friend, posted three times, never posted again, and guess what, it was at google.

I don't care if someone views my posts at Toon Zone. I've got nothing to hide.

Actually, if you input my real name, you'll find that I've reviewed a lot of software at MacUpdate.com. ;)

I've heard of that before, when you google yourself, you'll find your personal information and other stuff. I've done that to my teachers, and I could only find two (one teacher in this InterSchool Orchestra program, and you can find my teacher under the school's soccer page, since he's a soccer coach, which is odd, because another teacher coaches two sports, and yet UI couldn't find her).

I tried mine, but since my name is a month, and many people have the same last name as me, I can't find myself.

I'll try entering my many usernames I use for various stuff.

They're more likely to type in something like "animation message board" and then sign up and post about whatever on the main forum.

When you post on a public forum it's just that public, but unless you're posting your e-mail you really shouldn't have to worry about spam.

I am on Google toonzone, and from amazon.com reviews, you can tell my name too. But i dont care, I kinda like it. Its not like they can do anythibg with the info they have, I keep personal info private. Besides I have four strong and developed aliases online, none of them can be googled, just my public one.

It's funny how often these threads come up... I'm amazed at how many people seem to not understand the concept of search engine robots. Stalker edit: after doing a search on whitepages.com, I've found out that there are 48 Joel Hendersons listed.

My real name gets nothing... which is to be expected. I've got an 11-letter Polish name. Not exactly common. And my alias gets some German pages, a few Nightcrawler fansites, and a few threads from the AI forums where I'm a member. I actually have to go several pages to get anything from TZ. Odd.

Howdy,

Well, for what it's worth, I don't think I would have discovered Toon Zone at all if not for a Google search for more information about the new Justice League toon. Whether this is a Good Thing or not is left as an exercise for the reader :).

Besides, we allow non-registered members to surf the site and read the forums. Someone could find every one of your posts just as easily once they discover www.toonzone.net.

Internet Etymology time: The colloquialism for Googling yourself (which sounds like something vaguely obscene ;)) is an "ego surf."

Geek Trick: if you append "site:<sitename>" at the end of a Google search, you'll restrict your search to that site only. So, to find all instances of "Captain America" on Marvel Comics' website, you'd search for "Captain America site:www.marvel.com". Great for when you're SO SURE you saw something on a site but can't find it any more.

And Twage is a French band that got started AFTER I'd been using the name for five years... I should sue them. :p

Legal Action and Band Names? That brings back some memories. (I used to use a different band name, The Stereo Logic, but some band claimed they had it first (even though I'm pretty sure they didn't, as I had been using it for longer than their band existed,) so rather than bother with the legal crap, I traded in for Ultraklystron which I know is mine outright. Funny thing is, that band broke up, I'm still here, still selling CDs, still making music. Haha. :D)

Meanwhile, http://www.google.com/search?q=Karl+Olson&sourceid=mozilla-search&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official

If you have some time to kill, give it a look. I was able to trace my lineage back to him, so it was a pretty interesting read. However... the trail seems to go cold after I jump the pond back to England. I might have to querry some old fashioned paper books to go back any deeper.

I don't see why that's such a surprise. It's not like TZ is a private site or anything. When you post something, you post with the knowledge that everyone around the world has access to that post. That's the nature of the Internet.

Another nickname of mine, Zarblebug, is unique so that'll find stuff of me, but still not many.

Yet, if you're clever and know where to look, you can find scary amounts of information about me! I'm pretty reckless that way. Just too quiet for Google, though, I guess. Bring it on, stalkers.

Big Brother is Googling you... This is an excellent point. StarScream64 makes...If you put anything, yes, anything, out on the net, it is there for everyone, yes, everyone, all, good and bad to see...Sometimes it isn't even on the net..Some public story about you, and it is on the net..I donated some money to a very worthy cause, and that organization publishes a newsletter, which google picked up somehow, and there I was, my reak name listed at google, and if you read the newsletter, which Google had in its entirety, their was my real name with the donations..Now I just wanted that to be for that local paper only, but, now it is for everyone to know, I gave some money to some org....that I guess is what makes google like "Big Brother."

William C. Maune

that I guess is what makes google like "Big Brother."

Google itself isn't like big brother. Big brother would be the person using Google. The whole thing is basically a big trade off, we want search enginges to be effective so they work and we can actually find things, but if they work really well you can find a lot of things. As mentioned above, if you post something online, you are communicating in a public place and thus your communication is public. Similarly, if there is something in a newspaper these days, almost all papers also post their stories online and thus it falls into the public stream of information.

Is your last name common or what? 182 pages is alot, mine only had four and most of them said E. (last name here) and my dad's name is Eric and they all deal with stuff like computers, I'm like I knew my Dadworked with computer stuff, but I don't think this is him, because most of the other people weren't people my Dad works with, then I found this Ernie guy I'm like, weird. Isn't it funny sometimes though.

EDIT: Holy ****! The guy Ernest is a rich bird watcher, he's still alive and he seriously looks like he could be my grandpa's brother, or my grandpa. He's written many books about birds, and is rich enough to be all over google for it.(I'm praying we're related somehow, maybe he'd give me some money, since I cared enough to search for him.) All I know is its kinda cool, I mean he could give me money, and I'd be one with the ladies, just joking, but seriously, I want to know more.

Program> Keynote Presentation> Ernest (Name not to be put down)

"I began photographing hummingbirds about twenty years ago. I wasn't interested in video then because film could capture much more detail in the birds' plumage. When I became more interested in hummingbird behavior I realized that the 30 frames per second of video provided much more information than still photography. Vocalizations and the sound of the wings could be captured as well. I'm so inspired now by the quality of digital video that in the year 2000 I traveled for eight months out of the year, primarily in Central and South America. Although I can't be with the hummingbirds all of the time I believe that video is the next best thing to being there."

That what an article says about him, he's suppost to be one of the world's greatest Hummingbird researchers, not exactly what I'd call the cest career, but if it does more than pay the bills, I say you go Ernie.

Dr. G. W. L. Psst...when you do stuff that's normally viewed by the public...

...there's a good chance that the public can see it.

Really.

You didn't hear that from me, though...

________________________________________________________________

To expound...

Google, in its most popular form, is a search engine. It finds stuff on the internet and presents it to those who request it in a convienient, low-sodium, carb-smart package.

If you're concerned about something about yourself being listed on Google, then you should really stay off the internet. That's just the way it goes. By the same token, Yahoo, Lycos, AllTheWeb, A9, and other search engines have everything about you that you have made public ready for me to find just (http://search.lycos.com/default.asp?loc=searchbox&tab=web&query=oldtoonguy&submit.x=0&submit.y=0&submit=image) with (http://a9.com/oldtoonguy) the (http://www.hotbot.com/default.asp?query=oldtoonguy&prov=Teoma&pc=&pcx=&pcu=&date=) click of a mouse. (http://msxml.webcrawler.com/info.wbcrwl/search/web/oldtoonguy)

So in short, if you want to remain anonymous, participating in public activities on the internet isn't exactly the best thing you can do to that end.

since my TZ handle is an actual name, my real one in the Irish language, there are plenty of people who actually have the name of Eibhlin. I'd probably have to wade through a few pages to find any of my posts here.

However, a few weeks ago, like oldtoonguy, I was bored and Googled one of my RPG character names and discovered that someone named "Ivy" ripped me off wholesale and played my characters on another RP. It was my characters, down to the names of family members and everything. I was so pissed, but since the board has been closed down for over a year, there was little I could do about it. I did want to rip this "Ivy" person a new one for being so very uncreative and a danged thief.

Howdy,

Actually, there is one bit of info in Google that you may want to either edit or get deleted. Google is tied into phone directories, so if you punch in your phone number, you may get your listing.

I think the intent behind this was to solve all those times when you have a scrap of paper with someone's phone number on it, but have no idea who it's for, but there are lots of people who (rightfully) get freaked out about it. Google gives you instructions on how to get your number removed from this feature of the site.

I have an unlisted phone number, and nothing shows up on the site when I try this.

I did not know how else to put it..it is the truth...I did not reaize it either, but I guess Toonzone is not at the top of the list for people to snoop into, but it is public, as has been noted, and that is the only reason I started this thread, to inform, what I found out-- for all many of the vets of the net. knew long ago about this...Stu.
