Invoking the name “Martin Luther King” and screaming “Black Power!” a gang of up to 30 black teens attacked four white girls in Marine Park in what police are saying is not a bias crime.

The March 30 attack was a hot topic at state Senator Marty Golden’s recent public safety forum.

According to witnesses and parents of the victims, four young girls from St. Edmund’s had the day off from school due to Easter recess. They were playing basketball during dismissal from nearby Marine Park Junior High School, when several Marine Park students demanded to use the court.

After adults intervened and asked them to wait their turn, the teens left - but returned in a pack of up to 30, both boys and girls, and stormed into the park.

Witnesses say the attackers were all black and called their victims “white *******s” during the bloody melee, which raged for almost 20 minutes.

“This is not being looked at as a bias crime,” NYPD Deputy Inspector Kevin McGinn said at the meeting.

“When I pulled my car up to the park, I witnessed a pandemonium I’ve never seen in my life,” said Debbie, a mother of one victim who asked to remain anonymous for safety reasons.

Her daughter ran to the car, screaming, “They’re going to kill us,” Debbie recalled. My daughter was so scared and kids were running around like crazy.

Pursued by dozens of teens, some of the girls were “literally running into traffic to save their lives,” she said.

One girl made it as far as a nearby house, but was dragged by her hair back into the playground by a “wolf pack of children,” Debbie said.

The St. Edmund girls were bleeding and beaten to the point where they had cuts, scrapes, footprints and dirt all over them - and the attackers surrounded her car and started pounding on the windows as Debbie tried to herd the terrified children into her vehicle.

Two girls were hospitalized - one with a broken nose and one with a head injury, according to Edith, the mother of another girl.

According to Lt. Mark Molinari, from the 63rd Precinct, five of the assailants, who attend Marine Park Junior High School, were arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault. But since the attackers are all under the age of 16, they are facing charges in Family Court, and were arraigned last Friday.

“I always felt safe in the area and after hearing about such an incident, you start thinking what else could happen. These situations should not be happening, not in Marine Park, or anywhere else, and the safety of our kids should be of most importance,” said Denise Williams, a parent from Gerritsen Beach.

“It’s getting progressively worse in the community - these types of gangs are not only taking away our parks, they‚re ruining our neighborhoods,” said parent Cathy Miller.

“Nobody expects their child to go to a park and get beaten, with footprints on her head and arm, everyone just wants their child to be safe,” said Edith. “Everyone should have the right to be safe from teens, to small kids, to seniors, to mothers with strollers, no one should fear of being beaten while enjoying a day in the park.”

I know this is a serious and contriversal issue(Hope this doesn't turn into a flame war, like some other boards). To be honest, I feel somethings are suspect, you should at least try to get both sides of the stories(I want to hear at least 1 of the 30 kid's side of the story). Unfortanately, the irony of this is that these kids were shouting MLK, yet MLK was all about non-violent resolutions. But come on, race a side, does it really take 30 people to intimidate 4. That's kind of a weak move.:(

This is awful news. I feel really bad for the girls who got hurt. I'm thankful no one got killed (which might be the reason it wasn't reported on the evening news, although it might have been as news stations and newspapers take longer to report things than the internet.) That must be a scary situation for the girls. Hopefully the kids who assaulted them will have to answer for it.

I think this is as much an example of mob mentality as it is might be of racism. Of course it would be no shock that there are racist blacks, it follows naturally from human nature for some assinine reason. However, I find it improbable that all fifty blacks were racists.

The racial elements all most seem incidental. It was a bunch of hormone-ravaged adolescents fully in the sway of their excesses of testosterone and underdeveloped decision-making abilities. They were black and the girls, who probably became some sort of default racial antagonists in their mind, were white. What else would they shout?

The allusions to a gang angle provide a potential additional non-racial cause. If there was an element of gang organization in play it could have been a sense of territorialism.

I'm on the fence about this, there's no real answer here. I think there are arguments to call this a bias crime and to say it's not a bias crime. Personally I would move towards not although what happened is still disgusting.

To be fair though this is kind of a freak thing, the article kind of makes Marine Park seem like this gang ridden hellhole but it's a pretty nice park where you can usually see people jogging, dogs running, and kids playing basketball.

I'm not the person that suckered punched the kid. The white kid was at one of are local restaurants with a big red mark on the back of his neck. He told me what happen to him. I don't go anywhere near the court myself. I'm just telling it how it is.

I'm an African American college student and I am really tired of black people being able to get away with saying some of the meanest things about whites and then being called "activist" just because they represent "Black power". I really don't like it when people say these things thinking that they're acting in my best intrest.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has doubt about this story. The only source is from Brooklyn Skyline. All other stories I've seen reference it. The story just doesn't seem to jive. 30 junior high students fighting 4 girls for close to 20 minutes and only a broken nose, a head injury, and a few scapes. Wasn't a poster in this topic from Brookln? Maybe he/she could find out for certain?

As has been noted, the story was first reported in The Brooklyn Skyline (http://www.brooklynskyline.com/home.asp), and you can view the full text on their website here (http://www.brooklynskyline.com/news_article.asp?c=ne&na=1486). The paper appears to be a weekly alternative tabloid in the NYC area.

An internet search on the story turns up the original article, and a whole bunch of mentions on some especially unsavory white superiority forums. I've run a handful of searches on the Associated Press, Reuters, and Lexis Nexis databases, and they haven't turned up anything. Seriously, this story hasn't registered in a single mainstream news source. If the Nexis isn't turning anything up, it's practically invisible. You could look at this in one of two ways:

1) The media's not reporting on the story, possibly showing a bias, OR
2) The original article is either totally bunk or full of holes.

Being the sort of person that I am, I'm inclined to err on the side of caution and wait to hear more before jumping to any kind of conclusions.

I googled this story,also, when it was first saw this story posted and turned up similar links like RandomGuy. I would at least expect to run into a story about this even if the races weren't mentioned. Its the internet, so anything goes with news reporting.
