I got an email from someone telling me to "update my account" at paypal. com I do not have an account a this place, never did. it is an attempt at identity theft. Beware, of this ( legit companies, do not use email for this type of work) Even if you have even one credit card, never give your social scurity number to anyone you are not sure of. Especially your mother's madian name....I could go on, but just beware...It is bad enough they are hacking into data bases that have this info..don't help them out by giving it out.. This is the fastest growing form of theft in the country today.

Although the majority of us probably know of that, thank you just the same. It's always nice to remind people of this sort of thing from time to time, wouldn't you say Stu?

I didn't click the link however, I knew that I updated my info awhile back, and I also looked at the email address of who sent it, and it wasn't paypal's email.

My dad got one of those. He sent them back an e-mail telling them to cancel his account because he thought it was a scam!

Good ol' Dad!:D

I've gotten several messages that claim to be from eBay (when it's really just some scammer), even though I'm not registered on eBay at all. Weird...

I got one of those. Plus I've gotten three or four in the past few weeks for LaSalle bank. Don't have an account there, but I notified them anyway. I was hoping they'd let me know they would look into it, but I got a form letter.
I wonder why I got so many in such a short time?

I wonder why I got so many in such a short time?Once they know you are a real email address, and are interested, (that is you opened their stuff) the identity theves will not stop trying you. over and over. It was not Las Salle Bank, it just looked like it was.. They never stop...Easy money, very little ,if ever chance of getting caught, many loses are covered by insurance, so you are hurt only on your financial records...That is where you are really hurt...If they open --credit car accounts, using your info, it depends on the theif..some will go just up to about-- $490 Many stores will not check under $500. They will do a number of stores, and throw the card away, it is minor.. If they go over 500, and are not check out, , your credit can be ruined for months or years till it is straightened out, even if you lose no money..and can prove it was someone else..They are some of the worst non violent crooks around...I have read stories where people have spent years, trying to correct their credit reports..Don't ever open any of that stuff..It will come, over, and over, ---They know a certain small percentage will open it, answer it, ..and nail them..Beware, I know one lawyer, extremely bright, got hit twice. Just just using a credit card before new safegards were put in..But on the internet, there are few if any safegards, if you give them info, YOU CAN BE HURT BAD..again BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would like to add something else. These people who commit these crimes, are amoral. In fact, they enjoy the con, pulling one on you..they are able to lie and look you right in the eye, and sound sincere, and truthful. They learned being decietful and dishonest, in the same way, that most of us learn not to steal, or hurt people..In a later thread, I'll describe a con, that nets more money than all the bank robberies in the USA put togeather, and a good percentage of the people who are taken, don't even know it..

I got a bunch of those from some jerks saying they were from eBay, but I had previously listened to Clark Howard warning people about the very same email I recived. I keep getting them every now and then, but I report them to eBay every time.

Thank you for warning others about this though.

Hey, I was going to say, "Ah, Clark Howard," but, then I read Squall's post. He's a pretty nice guy to listen to. Nice tips he leaves.

He'd pop up every now and then on WSB-TV.
