View Full Version : Totally Atomic should expand!

Toonami is on Saturday and it's doing great there and CN has the buddings of a girls action block on Sunday nights but one hour simply isn't enough. Even if they padded things with reruns it would be better. Power Puff Girls for instance... (and Toei's little secret) Pretty much anything that encores of Sunday night currently encores at another time.

Obviously aquisitions would need to be made to help build this block. So on to brainstorming!

Kodocha - FUNi's new aquisition has alreadly been pitched to CN but at the moment there isn't really a place for it.

Mew Mew Power - This one goes out to all the Sailor Moon fans. I could see 4kids doing a similar thing with Mew Mew Power that they've done with One Piece. Airing it once a week but keeping it behind 4kids TV's airings.

The Winx Club - This one is a shoe-in but I'd prefer it go to Miguzi since the first 26 episodes have already aired.

Angelic Layer - It'd be the train / battle anime of the block obviously... I'm sure ADV would love to get this one more exposure.

Kalido Star - Circus fun for everyone. I really don't know much else but it has been suggested or Miguzi by other posters in the past.

DN Angel - Honestly I think it'd suit Toonami fairly well but since it's always shut down for being a shoujo, a girls block would be a better home.

Fruits Basket - The only anime I ever got my sister to watch with me (on Toonami) was Tenchi Muyo. This show is the same basic idea but with less "action" and more "slice of life". It'd need some editing for sure but Adult Swim is never going to air it and it's too wonderful of a series to keep off the air.

I was thinking of this. If PPGZ does come to CN, they can add it on and rename the block "Totally Atomic Power" or "Totally Atomic Puff" :p

I think Junniper Lee might be airing in the Totally Atomic block. Then again, who knows...

While I wa slaos thinking of this, with more shows, it would be stupid to call it "Totally Atomic" so I would just keep it as it is.

Totally Atomic cannot expand, because it's just a nickname that combines the two shows that air next to one another. It's not a block.

Technically it is a block, since it involves 2 shows in a similar genre(girls in action). Though, in order to expand, a name change is in order.

Heck, these 2 shows can almost be qualified as "American Shoujo"

A name change is a must but I couldn't come up with anything.

You see the best case scenario is this...

You have Saturday for the boys, Sunday for the girls and weekdays for both (Miguzi and later prime time). So the shows that warrent a daily slot would later move to weekdays for a stint while Saturday and Sunday will keep a continuous flow of fresh content blocked around fan favorites and bread winners (Dragonball, Totally Spies, Teen Titans, etc.)

Except that Totally Spies is french, in which case Western Shoujo would work just fine.

It would need to be renamed, but I could see it being expanded, especially after Juniper Lee and the new Power Puff show.

I like to take credit (rant: for posting this idea months ago).

But, I don't think that adding anime to this block would be a good thing at all. Just leave it at the point where it has Canadian, French, and American programming on (although you could say that PPGZ could fit as half-American ).

That would mean extending the block from 8-9 to possibly 6-9. Personally, an extension into later hours would not be a smart idea.

So, a schedule would look like this in September 2004:

8.0p - [i]Atomic Betty
8.5p - Totally Spies!

And, in May 2005:

7.0p - Hi Hi PuffyAmiYumi (though not part of the block)
7.5p - The Life and Times of Juniper Lee
8.0p - Atomic Betty
8.5p - Totally Spies!

As you can see, this block of time has a focus on spy/undercover shows at the moment, but could transfer into something else in the future. Something big, but I don't know what.

Just as long as it doesn't stray from its comedic girls' action shows roots, I'll be happy.

But if it starts hosting action shows, it'll do as well.

It's an attitude like that which keeps shoujo off American television.

What's wrong with airing anime? It's not like Toonami is all anime and Miguzi is rarely any. So it's fine to have anime-esque shows but not actual anime? Those are good shows I brought up and they deserve a shot at the audience just as much as Totally Spies and Atomic Betty do.

Those are good shows I brought up and they deserve a shot at the audience just as much as Totally Spies and Atomic Betty do.My personal problem with a comparison of say Angelic Layer and Totally Spies is that the length of anime usually never exceed 26 episodes unless it's some monster-popular show. Totally Spies will hit 100 episodes with it's 4th season and Atomic Betty can be renewed for more episodes (if they want to go past 26 episodes; I have no idea if it's popular in the ratings or not) Anime usually have a set number of episodes and can't really be extended without throwing the entire series a curve ball (YGO GX and DBZ GT) so airing the same 26 episodes gets a bit boring after awhile... like Cowboy Bebop's tenth run.

Maybe they could have an anime hour on TA (What abbreviation for a girls block  ) which will have 2 shojo shows and then replace them with another two shows after they finish their 1st or 2nd run.

That's the idea. Never keep the same show on that long. Just like with Toonami. (though Dragonball never seems to go away for more than a month). It's to allow fresh content more often for a cheaper price than buying more episodes of original productions or co-funding a production. The shows that do well can air on weekdays after their first or second run (depending on how well they do).

But, I don't think shoujo would fit in this block unless they were action programming (but not too much, just a suggested amount).

Point me to a shoujo that would fit with the two shows already airing on the block, and I'll recommend it (after I do some reading on it).

But, then again, if they wanted to prove that they want to bring the girls in by forming this block, they'd have placed the PPG on the block from the beginning. So, obviously, this block can't have been meant to be much more than two hours.

Always, they'd have the programming to place on the block, but would end up setting it aside, because the show doesn't have any episodes to premiere (like the show was going to end up tainting the block because it doesn't have any episodes coming anytime soon/ever).

Shoujo's with action?

Mew Mew Power. Like I said. CN could do the same thing that they are doing with One Piece.

DN Angel. It would fit quite well next to Spies as it's about a thief and cheezy love drama.

DN Angel sounds much like a worthy candidate; however, Mew Mew Power isn't such. The lead character whines more than Sam, Clover, and Alex put together... but I still watch.

And, it would be awkward if 4Kids offered a new show to Cartoon Network when other shows that have earned their time on the telly are waiting... and the need isn't so great for shows on this bloc of time on which we emphasize our focus on in this thread.

Comments on your ideas:

Kodocha - FUNi's new aquisition has alreadly been pitched to CN but at the moment there isn't really a place for it. Yeah, it definitely needs some TV time (especially considering that this show is 100+ episodes long). However, as you pointed you, it's hard to find a place for this show since its more of a comedy/drama show (plus, we don't know how Funi will handle Sana referring to Rei as her "pimp").

Mew Mew Power - This one goes out to all the Sailor Moon fans. I could see 4kids doing a similar thing with Mew Mew Power that they've done with One Piece. Airing it once a week but keeping it behind 4kids TV's airings. Considering the success of Sailor Moon back when it was Toonami, I'm sure that Mew Mew Power would work on a Sunday block. And for the person complaining that the show shouldn't be on the block because Zoey/Ichigo whines too much: so does Sailor Moon in the show's earlier seasons.

Angelic Layer - It'd be the train / battle anime of the block obviously... I'm sure ADV would love to get this one more exposure. Either that or Azumanga Daioh (another great show by ADV).

The problem here is that like Kodocha, there's no idea where to fit this show on the schedule (as some moments would be ruined if the show was editted, but the show is definitely not AS material). Definitely a sign that CN needs to make a shoujo block for shows that aren't action-related.

One Piece comes to mind. When CN sees a potential hit that 4kids is willing to give to CN they'll get it fairly early. TMNT came mid season 2 and One Piece came right after season 1. Sonic X has yet to air on CN, nor Kirby, nor even Winx (which I always assumed was a shoe-in for Miguzi). Shaman King only got a preview and nothing ever since. They could potentially get all of 4kidsTV's reruns but they don't want all of those shows only what will work for them. People have been griping about the loss of Sailor Moon for quite some time. Mew Mew Power is a near perfect fix and if people could tollerate the dub of Sailor Moon back then... Then they can handle the hacked Mew Mew as well. Because it's quite possibly... better.

I really think its time they stop pairing Totally Spies up with lame cartoons like Atomic Betty. Although the name might work well, TS deserves alot better... its highly rated, the animation quality is a million times better and you could make a season of Atomic Betty in less than a year, while we're not going to get season 4 of Totally Spies until fall of 2006...

Then they can handle the hacked Mew Mew as well. Because it's quite possibly... better.True, the Mew Mew dub is better than the (Dic-dubbed) Sailor Moon dub, and yes, maybe fans of Sailor Moon could become enamoured with Mew Mew Power, if they haven't already. But when it comes down to ratings and such... almost (if not) everyone in the demographic back when Sailor Moon was on has grown out of that demo. So you're aiming at what amounts to practically a whole new audience, a good portion that probably knows little or nothing about Sailor Moon, and thus many will be forced to decide if Mew Mew is for them on merit alone, not because of its similiarity to Sailor Moon.

Not that I'm against Mew Mew (or Winx, for that matter) ending up either on Miguzi or the Sunday night block. I'd be all for either. Will kids watch them on a regular basis remains to be seen.

I seem to notice when Betty and the others are fighting that they are practically stiff. Canadian animation can do better... this isn't one of their best efforts. And this coming from a guy who doesn't notice animation differences unless they're glaringly obvious... that's saying something.

Oh, and isn't a million times better exaggerating a wee bit?

And we're not getting Season 4 of Spies not this fall, but NEXT fall? Where'd you hear that?

Would you rather have stop-motion Spies!? I know we all wouldn't.

Hmm, next winter must mean this December. It shouldn't take so long to make an episode/a group of episodes.
