Well, that was pretty bad. Even though it's just a "rough pilot" or whatever, the show itself is just too random and crude without really being funny. And even if it's April Fools Day, finish the show before you air it.

Squidbillies is proof that the Action block must stay. At least if they want to maintain an image of quality.

Then again, if they showed Squidbillies ahead of schedule, does that mean we can see the Bebop movie at 12:30? Oh wait, this April Fool's, not Christmas...

livingfruitvirus

I kinda liked the background colors. Thing is I fear the intentionally bad artwork is going to turn people off from the show.

And it wasn't exactly random. If anyone paid attention, it was setting up how all 3 squids ended up back together.

Remember when Adult Swim was almost exclusively good shows? I guess this is what success brings.According to law of average, not every show they put out will be gold.

When was that?

When AS started it had a horrible ATHF (when it started), Birdman (when it started), and Oblongs. Then by the time ATHF and Birdman got good, Sealab and Brak were horrible.

2002 actually had to be the WORST time for Adult Swim as ATHF and Home Movies were the only good shows getting new episodes for the ENTIRE year. That includes anime.

What Image of quality?

WHR sucked, Wolf's Rain sucked, Super Milk Chan sucked, FMA is barely watchable.

One good anime since Case Closed isnt an image of quality.

I liked the part with the wolves for some reason, but overall it wasn't great. It's not like it was finished though. I'll be more interested to see the completed second episode. Since the set up will be complete it should be much more indicative of the show's actual quality.

Actually, I was worried it was going to be worse, thinking plenty of Sealab people would be working on it. Maybe there are, I don't follow the credits that close, but I think they're putting more effort into this.

The thing is, after all this time they still haven't finished one episode?
I think WS is a great, easy going place, but they need to light a fire underneath some of their people.

When AS started it had a horrible ATHF (when it started), Birdman (when it started), and Oblongs. Then by the time ATHF and Birdman got good, Sealab and Brak were horrible.Oblongs was added later. You also forgot Home Movies and Cowboy Bebop (I thinik they were around since the launch) and I liked early Birdman.

Compare that to the new round of shows. Venture Brothers (good), TGttM (bad), Robot Chickhen (okay), and the pilots of PHF, Squidbillies, and that detective show. (none of them are good) Aswell as a declining quality in Sealab, ATHF, and Birdman.

...

This is the 4th rewrite for Episode 1.I'm not happy with that either. Usually many rewrites = the project is unstable to begin with. Guess we'll see how that pans out. But all I hear from Evan Dorkin is he takes job after job after job, and then *****es about having no free time, then procrastinates, then misses deadlines, cycle over.

If they dropped Action, I'd be gone faster than the buffet at Star Jones' wedding.Yeah right.

You mean, that cartoon wasn't an April Fool's Day gag?

I taped it last night on DVR, thinking it was going to be a repeat of this past Sunday's Robot Chicken (the one with the Peanuts horror movie spoof). I played it back this morning, turned it off after about two minutes, then quickly pressed the "erase" button.

A mini Robot Chicken marathon would have been better than this. Heck, anything would have been better than this!

I missed Robot Chicken last Sunday. The least they could have done is reaired it instead of doing the panel discussion again.

As for the show itself, was it supposed to be funny? I just found it depressing. The story, the music, the character designs (especially the grandma), everything.

For an unfinished PILOT, I thought it had some amusing parts. Nothing was particularly laugh out loud, but I think there is a decent foundation to build on.

This has promise. Some parts of Squidbillies worked out well. While the human characters were overly grotesque, the squids were kinda appealing in a warped and twisted sort of way. It did have some funny bits in it.

Of course, I live in a part of rural Michigan that has real hillbillies who came up from Appalachia to work in the auto plants, but who still have the hillbilly traits including the moonshine and meth cookers. (They don't call this state Michatucky without reason.) We have people around town who look like living hillbilly cartoons. So maybe I can better appreciate hillbilly-based humor.

Is this show enough to displace ATHF as the top dog of the WS shows? Probably not. But it already is one hell of a lot better than Sealab.

Squidbillies could be a good addition to the comedy block, but could also become incredibly repetitious if the writers aren't careful. But like others here, if AS ever decided to drop the action anime and go all-comedy, I'd probably drop AS. (^_*)

OH YEAH. I think that they have too much time and effort put into this show thus far to just quit and forget about it. I think that too many people are over emphasising the weaknesses of the show and are totally ignoring the positives that it showed.

Zyzzybalubah
04-04-2005, 03:29 AM
It's better than I expected (a friend taped it, hurray! thus why I am discussing now.) I thought the robbery scene was funny, I thought it was hillarious how the grandma sounds like Master Shake!!! :D Seriously, I just pictured her getting really mad any minute. The animation style is really out there too! Funny how they had to use story boards because they haven't finished it yet.

Okay so the pilot was okay in my opinion, but I personally don't know how long this concept can last them though. I think it is very limited, but you never know. I thought Sealab 2021 was somewhat limited and even more limited when the tragic death of Harry Goz happened, but IMO they were still able to make a funny show (not that many people agree with me on that though, heh heh.) Well I guess I'll have to wait until September...

jbanks97
04-04-2005, 02:46 PM
I think squidbillies still has a shot (a slim one), long production times don't necessarily mean the series sucks. Look at ATHF for example.

In the commentary for the original test pilot (on Volume one's dvd), Dave/Matt mention that they've had the idea for ATHF since 99 when they wrote Baffler Meal, they worked on several rewrites just to get the test pilot done, and that didn't appear till 01. (The test pilot is a much longer, less funny version of Rabbot).

(I haven't seen the doodle pilot though, my cable was out last week).

Btw-may be a dumb question, but who's the main writing crew behind squidbillies?

MasterZaffro
04-04-2005, 03:29 PM
I watched it that night and didn't find it very funny. Luckily I tried to tape Robot Chicken so I got to see it again. The second time around I thought it was much funnier. I think they should ditch the human characters since they suck and don't really have personalities. Overall I like and I'm sure it will get funnier as it moves along, until it sucks. To answer the question about the creators: Dave Willis (Writer from ATHF) and Jim Fortier (Writer from SGC2C). I'd say it has potential, all we need is a funny show from 70/30.
