I'm going on a trip pretty soon and I wanna make sure I'm occupied. I've got a couple good books, no mp3 player, unfortunately and a GBA.
What's the best Zelda to pick up that's the most epic, fun and embodies the Zelda experience?
I was thinking A Link to the Past. An ideas?

I'd definately count LttP as not just the best sprite-based Zelda, but the best Zelda in general. Great storyline, introducing tons of new elements like the goddesses, the Imprisoning War, and the Master Sword to the franchise, the Dark/Light world is really neat to play with, the bosses are fantastic, and I do believe you could do more with all the items you got in that game than any other. Great Zelda game, long-lasting, great fun, and you get that whole 4 Swords thing to boot (which I hadn't played with yet).
I'm not sure how they upgraded it for the GBA, but if you've already played it before, I'd instead recommend both of the Oracle games. They could be played alone each having a bunch of variety to make them both unique and long-lasting, and if you have both, they have a neat feature that goes on if you play one after the other. They don't really 'feel' like Zelda games. They play like them, they have characters from the series, but the story in both pull away from the classic formula, for better or worse.
Okay, darnit - I thought they were all good. Link's Awakening was a fun sidequest that seemed more like an amalgamation of Zelda history, which on its own is pretty fun stuff. In a way, its like a less sensical LttP, and I'd say more but its been too long since I played it. Minish Cap seemed to me more in Majora's Mask's vein, where it's almost more fun running around doing side quests and just generally running around than pulling off the actual dungeon-hopping. Problem is, it won't last you the trip, being a fairly short game.
So, yeah, ramble aside, your first choice is still the best one.

LttP is (arguably) the best Zelda game in existence. If you've never played it, it should definitely be your choice.

it may be the noob, but i'm going to have to say "minish cap". loads of side-quests, intriguing storyline, and it's been said it's the first zelda game to lead them all (the prequel of prequels). link to the past is good too, though :p

LttP is the best. Zelda. game. EVER., but if you've already played through it on the SNES, I'd recommend picking up Minish Cap first. It's pure old-school Zelda at its finest, with some great new items, well-designed dungeons, and tons and tons of secrets to be discovered.
Really, though, you could choose with a single-elimination coin-flip tournament and you wouldn't be wrong. All of the Gameboy Zelda outings thus far have been great fun.

Like everyone else is saying, A Link to the Past is argueably the best Zelda game in the series and although Minish Cap is a great game it just can't really touch A Link to the Past. If you haven't played A Link to the Past then you owe it to yourself to do so, but if you have played it before and want something new and fresh pick up Minish Cap.

I'll just be a big sheep and say ALttP. It's gripping, stunning and spectacular, with great bosses, loads of new features and a thrilling storyline. Of course, if you've already played it on the SNES, then The Minish Cap is still very good. If you like your sidequests, then you'll really like this game, but... it's not particularly long (without all the sidequests and stuff).

:/ Link to the past drives me bonkers in terms of dificulty (There's just not enough HP at all imho) and map design.
However, that might be 'cause my 1st zelda was "Occorana of time"

A Link to the Past was pretty good, but I think the Oracle of Ages and Season games are leagues ahead of it. They have many differences, and the ending is very satisfying when you link them both and face the final bosses. And there was more variety in Ages and Seasons too. Running in and out the past was cool, and so was changing seasons to solve puzzles. And the rings added a cool experience to the game, putting on the Octo ring and running around as an octorock is just plain fun. Sorry, but the Oracle games are way better then A Link to the Past.

it's been said it's the first zelda game to lead them all (the prequel of prequels). No, it isn't. That's Ocarina of Time

No, it isn't. That's Ocarina of Time*sigh* it says in all the promotional details that Minish Cap is the first ever zelda game, but i don't want to get into any time line discussions. we already have like 3 threads dealing with that

Link to the Past has been the greatest Zelda game for about 13 years now. You cant argue with that.

Better late than never to play the greatest Zelda game of all time.
