View Full Version : Billy and Mandy's original style

In the episode where Grim "corrects" Billy's vision, the first alternate take on reality looks really similar to the art style used in the orginal title cards, and I have a hunch that it's how Maxwell Adams designed "Meet the Reaper" when it was originally submitted as a pilot. Am I at all correct about this?

Nice screencap. The show would have had a little spice if it was originally designed like that. But, it wouldn't look right now.

Right... "a spin-off of Robot Jones". Have you seen Robot Jones? I know I haven't, but it doesn't look like that.

I don't know if that's how they animated everything, but the ink splatter style is definately something Atoms does in his work. It gives a sense of derrangement, doesn't it?

I didn't know that this was how the show was going to look. That's pretty wicked. I believe in that same episode, they showed Anime Grim and Mandy (that one, I kinda liked).

It looks kind of like a spin-off of Robot Jones, and I think those black spots would be burned into my vision after watching one episode.
I've seen Robot Jones and that is not the art style used like in "Sore Eyes". I'm not sure if that was even B&M's original style anyway (judging by the pilot at least). That looked to be more of a parody of modern art of those weird styled cartoons, just like the next scene...
they showed Anime Grim and Mandy (that one, I kinda liked).
(Grey DeSile voice of Mandy BTW does speak fairly good Japanese, at least based off Puffy AmiYumi anyway) as well as fairytale Grim and Mandy.

How true is the claim I heard that Grim was really introduced in an episode of Animaniacs? (complete with the West Indian acent and all!)

Wow, that's incredibly awesome. I'm getting a whole Ralph Steadman vibe from it.

Facts?
The Facts:
Grey DeLisle does not speak Japanese. The Japanese you hear is that of Yumi of the rock band. (Yes, they get the artists to scream in Japanese). Are you sure about that? The random Japanese spoken on Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi sound like they come from the VAs (Delisle, Keone Young, and Janice Kaway), except for the live segments and the theme.

Check the reviews for the show. Anywho that style looks good. Now does anyone remember the first style of Billy and Mandy the one used in the pilot? What happened to that style?

Sometimes it's the actual Yumi speaking Japanese. But you can tell when it is because it sounds incredibley off from the regular Toon Yumi voice. Other times it's Grey just speaking japanese though. Same goes with Janice and Keone.

I actually saw part of the pilot today (it aired on CN today as part of the show's first episode). The style was purley Maxwell Atom's. It just evolved as soon as he got other storyboard artists and directors in to change it around a bit. It's a lot more distinct then the other B&M's in a sense, but that dosen't mean it's as good.

That Style looks VERY familiar, (And I'm not saying just from the Pilot), I wonder where its from.
