Personally, I tend to prefer cats, dogs, wolves and foxes.
All animals are special but I've always felt a real affinity with horses, rooks (a type of crow), owls and moths.

Dogs, hands down and twice on Tuesdays. They're so open and enthusiastic; well-loved dogs just seem to enjoy and appreciate life so much and are too busy having fun to worry about how big of a fool they're being ... I love that =) After dogs, I'd say chickens (they're SO blasted comical!), fireflies (anything that literally lights up for its mate has gotta be good, and the experience of enjoying a warm summer night surrounded by fireflies is positively numinous), dingoes (if only because my dog rather looks like one) and ants (they're so darned -fascinating- to watch) round out my Top Five animals ...

I have three favorite animals:
http://www.bear-tracker.com/raven.jpg
These guys are creepy, and incredibly smart for a bird. It's cool to see a whole group of them swarm over things.
http://www.rainforestsearch.com/images/ya_wood.jpg
Anacondas are cool because they are the heaviest snake on Earth, and the like to spend more time in water then on land.
http://www.users.fast.net/~becard/Altamira%20Oriole-1.jpg
What's not to like about the Oriole though? The orange-black color is awesome, but I don't mind the yellow ones. For some reason, I like birds.

This may turn out to be a long post. I'm an animation/videogames/general pop culture fan second, and it's a distant second, trailing behind zoology. Favorite animals?
...Cockroaches!!! They're cute, quirky and incredibly misunderstood; I keep several species as pets. They really have all sorts of entertaining habits. They can even get "friendly" and enjoy being handled. Their dirtiness is pure myth (they're no germier than butterflies) and of the 3,000+ known species, less than 30 are even capable of becoming household pests. NORMAL roaches prefer to live outdoors, and cannot survive in a house at all. Their "immunity" to radiation, incidentally, is also exaggerated. As far as withstanding a nuclear war goes, they couldn't hold a candle to ants or scorpions (and nothing survives radiation as well as the microscopic Tardigrade or "water bear").
Someday I hope to own one of these (I envy whoever's hand that is) :
http://images.newsru.com/pict/id/548364_20030519181925.gif
Macropanethsia rhinoceros. Sluggish, docile and one of the world's largest insects, as well as one of the only species (cockroach and otherwise) to have an adult lifespan of nearly a decade!
And yes, I will take negative comments personally. Keep it to yourself!
Now, the other animals I obsess over more than others:
Octopuses - physically alien, but mentally as human as some of the higher primates, and I personally think there is nothing else in nature as impressive as an octopus's shape-shifting powers. And yes, octopuses is acceptable. octopi is actually the least appropriate pluralization.
Naked Molerats - crazy looking, and the only mammals (the only vertebrates, period) to live in colonies with a single reproductive "queen", just like ants or termites!
Plain old regular actual rats - best pets ever, by far. All the loyalty, playfulness and affection of dogs with the cleanliness and quietness of cats. It's just a pity they have such brief lifespans. I currently own two female black rats, Fly and Mars. I can only tell them apart by the white on their bellies, so I can't tell which one is stealing my sock here:
http://scythemantis.homestead.com/files/r-sock.jpg
(Behind her is my albino african clawed frog)
Flies - they just look neat and do neat things. Like roaches, people just don't "get" them. The majority of flies are clean, colorful nectar-drinkers and even more important pollinators than bees. Not that I prefer those, though...it's actually the scuzzy, acid-puking kind that I love. Course, they too are beneficial (THE most crucial scavengers on earth. Without them we'd be up to our armpits in disease)
Stomatopods - also called mantis shrimp. Beautifully colored, weird-looking and intelligent crustaceans who's claws can strike with such power and speed that the larger species can shatter glass or sever human fingers. I hope to get one as a pet later this year (many people keep them. You just need a durable, plastic aquarium if you're getting one of the big ones. Which I plan to)
Deep sea Anglerfish - I love all creatures of the deep-sea abyss, but Anglers are pretty much their "poster child". Their mating habits stand out from all other animals: The tiny male lives his whole life attached to the female, sucking her blood. Over time his skin fuses with hers and he degenerates into almost nothing but genitalia, even losing his senses and most of his brain. Many would argue that the same is true of humans, though.
http://www.mailsbroadcast.com/zban.deepsea.fish-big.jpg
Camponotus saundersi - a group of tropical ants that defend their colonies by swelling with poison and EXPLODING!
Colossal Squid - yes, there's a bigger species than the "giant" squid, and its suckers are armed with swiveling, birdlike talons.
Fleas - I'm fascinated by parasites in general, but fleas are the coolest-looking.
Hagfish - also called slime hags. Fish so primitive they lack fins, scales, proper gills (they just have roundish holes), lower jaws, or bone (they're cartilaginous). They're the slimiest animals on earth (they surround themselves in a "cloud" of the world's stickiest mucous to deter predators) and the sea's primary scavengers (they can reduce a dead whale to bare bone in only weeks). Here is the priceless face of a hagfish:
http://www.uwlax.edu/biology/faculty/tyser/QME/files/hagfish.jpg
This is where you finally go when you die at sea.
Penguin with the ostrich being a close second. For some reason I like birds that don't fly.
Me too, esspecially Kiwis. Penguins are adorable though, and I just find it way cool that they're only flightless because they're so geared toward swimming. In a way, they do fly, just not through air...
