Thank you every birthday well wisher!
Sorry I didn't get a chance to reply earlier, but I wanted to take the opportunity to share some thoughts birthdays bring to my mind.
But first of all, it was also my one year anniversary joining Toon Zone. You're not supposed to get anniversary threads, but since I have a birthday thread on this day too I guess I found a loophole. What mischief will I cause next? Should I stick pennies in my ears? (http://www.nationallampoon.com/supermanisadick/images/dick/067.jpg) There's no law against that!
There were two reasons that got me to join on my birthday last year.
First, I noticed ones name appears at the bottom of the forum home page along with ones age. That eliminates the need to do any tricky calculations on my own.
Second, I thought I would treat myself to a few cartoon dvd's and I might need to ask a few questions of the amazingly knowledgeable and compulsive members that can be found here. Not that I've been doing much of that, but what's the hurry? I've plenty of time, I hope.
But my time here has been enjoyable, reminding me of older cartoons I've forgotten and learning new things, like anime has a funny side.
And I have to say I'm surprised my post count rate has risen to almost 2 per day, which for me is being downright chatty.
Another year older means it's another year harder to get by solely on your looks. I suppose it's possible to develop a personality or learn how to fain having a genuine interest in other people, but I figure if you make your choices and are willing to reap the rewards, then changing mid stream because it's now turned against you, just makes you a quitter.
Getting older isn't all bad though. I can now use the terms "consarnit" and "dadgum" without the self-consciousness I experienced when I was younger.
However, if I knew part of being a responsible adult was getting a regular prostrate exam, I would have started working on creating the non-invasive medical tricorder technology from Star Trek back when I was sixteen.
But aging isn't so much about what the calender says as it is about microscopic cellular defects that build up during a lifetime.
Some cells in the human body are made to last just a few days. They do their job and get replaced by the billions.
Others are meant to last your entire life and are in constant repair. And usually this is done with a remarkable degree of accuracy, but occasionally a defect occurs. And even then the body is pretty good at correcting for mistakes, but some of these defects get incorporated and become the new normal. Kind of like if your car goes in to the garage, and just one time the guy screws up and uses the wrong replacement part and then every time after that when it goes in for regular maintenance they keep putting in that same wrong part. Individually it's not a big deal, but when it happens to you billions upon billions of times, eventually you find yourself going around in a klunker and sensing the final breakdown could be around the next corner.
OK, that's enough reflection for one year.
But don't think I have anything against birthdays.
In addition to usual birthday fun, I did spend a good deal of yesterday making my own cake. It's actually something I enjoy doing but rarely get a chance to do. And it's my general belief that if you want something done exactly your way, you better be ready to do it yourself. In this case it's hard to find a cake that's rich enough, and fudgy enough, and decadent enough to meet my chocolately desires. Overall it turned out good, but it looked like it was frosted by an eight year old. I just don't get enough practice at that part.
