View Full Version : So California, how does it feel to be Oregon?

Over the past two weeks, we've been getting each other's weather due to a weird system. It's been sunny and in the sixties day after day here, and California's been pounded with foot after foot of soggy rain.

The results are nice in the short run but bad in the long: California isn't exactly built for weather this rainy. Mud is sliding, and houses are collapsing. Over here, there's this wacky natural law: if it does not rain practically EVERY SINGLE DAY in the winter, we get a drought in the summer. Don't ask me why it works that way--California does fine without our water. It's getting it NOW though....

I'm enjoying it. :D Then again, I don't live in an area threatened by mudslides, so maybe that's why I'm enjoying it. But I love it when it rains. Been a few days since we've had some here where I live, though, just south of Modesto. Hope to get some more. I hear Southern California's been getting hammered pretty constantly, though, and I'll be in L.A. and Anaheim for the whole first week of March. I'll be sure to take a nice big jacket with me. :D

I don't live in California, but do remember that this is the raining season December-April and there getting some needed rain. The southwest has been under drought conditions in the last few years and they need this alot. Man I can't believe that every river in Arizona is running and they're suppose to be dry.:p

It's odd. I live in the Pacific Northwest too, and it's been non-stop clear skies here for the past three weeks - and during this same period, California has been getting terrential rain.

It's not a bad thing because the Golden State is always in a perpetual drought, but still, all those mudslides must be a pain.

Building houses on hills? Oh, boy.

Guy Sad About His House
Now my pool's gone, and about half of my house is flooded... Oh, boy. I should've gotten flood insurance. And, my dad's gonna be shouting "Boy, ya shudn't've built yer house on a hill!" for years! That's my interpretation.

Gotta say, it's not very fun. I came out here to get AWAY from the rain/snow, and it rains for a week when I first arrived in early January, a few times inbetween, and all of last week. Which, incidentally, was the week of our school's mini-break. That made it even worse- to be stuck inside during a break.

The rain has disrupted some people's filming schedule because they planned to shoot outdoors- CURSE YOU, RAIN!!!

Having said that, the times when it's sunny (which, to be fair, is most of the time) are excellent.

I know folks who's asthma is acting up, and it's February! Totally weird.
The air smells like May, and the trees are blooming. It's pretty cool, but I'd hate to be here in summer...which I probably will be.

(I live in Washington, on the north bank of the Columbia River.)

I don't know where this misconception comes from that it never rains in California. When it's sunny in a coastal area all the time, a little humidity is bound to build up. In Florida (a state also known for being perpetually sunny), this results in the occasional hurricanes. In California, it results in rain. It rains every winter here. It's just rare that it rains for a full month. Here in the San Francisco bay area, we usually get a few days of really hard rain in a row, followed by a few weeks of sun, a few days of dark clouds, a few more days of hard rain, more sun, and repeat until March.
