This rumor is about as old as the dawn of time.

Howdy,

NASA debunks the rumor at this page on their website (http://liftoff.msfc.nasa.gov/news/2001/news-moonlanding.asp).

Of course, any evidence disproving a conspiracy theory is only more proof of how deep the conspiracy really goes. That's the beauty of a conspiracy theory.

People just can't deny the fact that the American's landed on the moon and we won. This is why I hate Fox News and their lamo news reporting in order to stir up the world.

i remember when fox did a show for this but it makes sense that the pentagon would explain it better.

There are still people in this world that beleave the following didn't happen:

Columbus discovering the world is actualy round, The Holocaust, 9/11, Moon Landing, The July 4th, 1776 founding of America, World War 1 and 2, Vietnam, The Korean War, Desert Storm, The American Revoltution, The Civil War, Pearl Harbor, The Destruction of Nagasaki, The Fall of The Soviet Union...

just to name a few

Here's the specific link, anyway: http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/tv/foxapollo.html

It's a bit more in-depth than the NASA thing.

Heck, it's still widely acceptable to denounce evolution and that's as proven as the existence of gravity. If it happens, people will doubt it. The amount of doubt is always proportionate to how interesting or important "it" happens to be. Some people even continue to doubt the existence of microscopic life, and cling to ancient pseudosciences that pin disease on some sort of chemical (or even spiritual) imbalance.

A friend of mine's mother doesn't believe dinosaur fossils are real.

What gets me is that science really has nothing to gain from hoaxing anything, but people still want to believe that Nasa and other research institutes the world over are a bunch of incompetent windbags preying on a gullible public for some sort of personal glory or extreme patriotism (as if scientists even generally care about political issues)

Watch the films. There wasn't, and I believe isn't, a way to simulate "low gravity" movement. The inertia (horizontal speed at which objects move) is the same as Earth, but the trajectory that things fall is longer. The shadows are full black because the vacuum doesn't diffuse (scatter) light as air on Earth does, causing shadows to still have some light. Americans walked on the Moon, of that have no doubt.

Some of the crackpots chalk all of that up to CG animation. They think it was secretly mastered by the government decades before it was ever used in mainstream entertainment.

Nevermind that back then such technology would probably cost MORE than a moon landing.

Not to mention the Rape of Nanking, which the majority of Japan still denies as ever happening.

As far as this "not landing on the moon" thing. I hate the government and NASA more than anyone, and even I think this whole "moon hoax" is hogwash.

No, we didn't NOT land on the moon. There is no way we couldn't have not landed on the moon, no way, no how.

People who believe this are as crazy as The Question. These are the kind of people who could deny the existence of internal combustion while riding on the bus.

just to name a few Well, I can't say I really believe that the Pentagon was trashed by a hijacked plane.

But Pearl Harbor? Holocaust? 9/11? Yeesh, talk about conspiracies...

"So long as there are a majority of people believing any one thing, there are a minority that will steadfastly believe the opposite, if for no other reason than to avoid conformity."~ Me

The Ruskis were watching us like crazy...they would have cried bloody murder to embarrass us if we actually had faked it.

Personally, I really don't think it should even be up for discussion...if we have telescopes that can see galaxies billions of lightyears away, I think we should be able to manage a look at the surface of the moon to see if the debris is still there...

Conspiracy theorists are good for a laugh. For example, check out this guy -- he seriously believes that the mediveal model of the world is absolutely true! The Earth is hollow and we live on the inside, the atmosphere has a glass celing, the Moon & Sun are bowls, not spheres... All of it. :p

LOL! How true! Never mind the fact that CG technology simply didn't exist back then... There's more power in your TI-85 schoolroom calculator than there were in the onboard computers of the Apollo modules...

America wasn't founded on July 4th, the declaration of independance was signed then. America in its present form was founded in 1789, I believe when the constitution was ratified. America the continent was probably around in the 1600s or whenever italian mapmakers started selling maps labeled that way.

Also I thought to post Bad Astronomy too, back at post #4 but decided that would be overkill although Plait does specifically refute notions from the Fox show. Also, Fox News is a bit different than the Fox Entertainment network although I understand what is saying.

Zeke the plane... erm... well without pointless screaming, we're just going to have to agree to disagree on THAT one!

What's funny (or disturbing, depending on how you look at it) for me is that I'm distantly related to the guy that makes most of these documentaries. He's a bit of a nut, apparently.

But yeah, this stuff's been floating around for years and has been debunked just as many times.

Now that is funny! :D

But in all seriousness, I'm still amazed that this debate is even raging on to this day. You'd think by now people would accept that man has landed on the moon and leave it at that.

But this kind of skepticism not only hurts America's image, it hurts the very astronauts who took the chance to go where no other man has gone before (literally) and succeeded in doing it. A few years ago, Buzz Aldren was stopped by a raging fanatic who called Buzz a liar and a coward and demanded that he swear by the bible that he had actually been to the moon. I'm not sure but I've heard that Buzz punched out this fanatic afterwards. Anyone else hear about this?

I was shocked when I first came across this theory since I've always been a firm believer of the fact that yes, we DID land on the moon. But the people who present 'proof' saying otherwise are just...not thinking are they?
Erm..couldn't those photos presented as'proof' of the hoax have been digitally manipulated?I mean, DUH NASA would not show the public photos which so obviously state the mission a hoax.
Man DID land on the moon.and that's that.

Believe me, there are worse conspiracies.

I've read about how the moon apparently doesn't exist. I am really...really beginning to fear for humanity.

Swordfish, thanks for clarifying that up for me. :)

So people are now thinking that big white circle in the sky at night is nothing but a figment of our imagination? Sad...
