I just looked at the schedule, I know it hasn't been on yet but just had to comment. Hurray for Big O returning to Adult Swim weeknights! It's a little amusing, Wolf's Rain will be getting repeats but Robin goes bye bye. I guess Robin must have been pretty weak in ratings? I mean even Lupin got two or so runs at that hour.

The Landstander
01-09-2005, 02:02 AM
I'm would guess that WHR and Lupin were about the same level in ratings in premieres; just not that popular. I would also guess the difference is that the WS people seem to really like Lupin.

BTW, probably expect similar ratings on New Year's Day for yesterday and this coming Saturday, considering the NFL playoffs that's currently going on (and I definitely have a feeling that last night's game will affect FMA's ratings). :(

On Sunday's ratings, nice to see Mission Hill in the top 3. With the lack of new shows on Sundays for the next few weeks, I wouldn't be surprised if it makes a few more. (or course it would be nice for HM to make a top 3.. but that's really a pipe dream :().

For saturday, it was the first, so I'm guessing the hangovers from crazy new years was just too much for some. :p Still a decent 344 for FMA, and a decent outing for VB.

If FOX wants to fork over a ton of cash for a 2 minute spot, I'd take their money off their hands.

I sure hope there's something you wouldn't put a price tag on.

I doubt it was a "ton" of cash in any case--it's a movie that by all rights should be direct-to-video spun off a crappy movie that at best underperformed, at worst had a worse service history than the Hindenburg.

Still and all, if [as] wants to make themselves even more mediocre and banal, this is as good a way as any to accomplish that. Thanks to the ATHF marathon crashing and burning, it's not like they can just strip Sealab for a whole night . . .

And no, X2 didn't crash and burn. But X2 was the DVD release of a highly-anticipated sequel to a successful movie. Tomb Raider 2 and Elektra are sequels and spinoffs to box office bombs that no one wanted to see the first time (even among the great unwashed that usually shovels vapidity and idiotic movie offal into its gullet like a fat woman shoveling Bon Bons into her mouth), and will twice as not want to see this time.

You're comparing apples and oranges in an attempt to divert me from expressing the opinion that outside of Seth McFarlane week, [as]'s special events are usually a colossal waste of time.

They don't have that many reruns to burn through.

Every time I watch a TGTTM ep, I become more and more convinced that Tim and Eric hate humanity and created that show to punish mankind.

When you're in a business to sell advertising, you'd be stupid to turn down a company that wants to buy out an entire commercial break to promote their movie because you don't like the franchise or comic book or whatever. If you don't accept it, some other network will. Who cares if you don't like the damn movie or you think this should've done this or that? It's 2 freakin minutes and that's that. Other networks DID accept it. It's not like [as] has some radical kewl exclusive on this. I think when you're lowering yourself to devoting valuable airtime to a movie that Spike TV is saturation bombing . . .well, suicide is an option. In some cultures, you even get your dignity back.

And having high standards is not a crime, honestly. Higher standards might have had Sealab cancelled ages ago and how is that not a big win for the human race?

You know, those are all very practical reason to whore out your time for a movie that will no doubt satisfy those people who craved more movies like Mortal Kombat Annihilation, but try to see the distinction between "practical" and "justified."

And sticking a damn dollar sign on everything hardly justfies your argument. If the only argument you can come up with is "well they paid us a LOTTA money to pimp it," well . . .you're being a shill.

If [adult swim] had a bigger budget and/or was on a broadcast network, then they could probably turn down this thing and still have tons of money left over to play with.

But they don't. They have to pay their bills using advertising money, and these kinds of spots pay MUCH more than your average 30-second commercial. I don't see why you have such a big problem with this. It's not like they're taking off and playing one of those HBO-specials or something.

And what if the people at Adult Swim are actually anticipating Elektra? Are they not allowed to air any specials for it when given the chance just because a few viewers are insulted? Hell, if that were the case, Family Guy would've been gone long ago.

Glad you asked. I dislike it because it's yet another example of advertising-- and advertising for stupid, useless, crap at that--further encroaching on the real reason I tuned in to the damn channel in the first place. I think most advertising is retarded, tasteless, unneccessary, and FAR too saturated in the public mindset as a Good Thing, as this thread is demonstrates. It's stupid and makes people stupider, and honestly, the human race can't afford to lose any more IQ points.

I have a bit more faith in the human race (and I say this as a mean-spirited elitist) that in a world totally devoid of advertising they would be able to find their way to grocery store and buy friggin' soap if they got dirty.

And what if the people at Adult Swim are actually anticipating Elektra?

Then they're about as stupid as I gave them credit for. I have about as much faith in [as]'s taste as I do in their joke writing or their ability to find their asses with both hands in their back pockets. Not much, in other words.

Are they not allowed to air any specials for it when given the chance just because a few viewers are insulted?

Well, considering the airwaves are a public trust leased from us . . .well, yeah. I kinda would like them to aim for something that wasn't completely offensive to thinking people. They can't do it, obviously, but I'm big on gold stars for extra effort.

It looks like the temporary move to the 11 p.m. slot and their selection of episodes and the ad campaign form a bid to boost VB ratings to the point that would justify spending money on another season.

I may be reading too much into this, but it looks like VB is at the same point Conan was, on the bubble regarding a "more or no more" decision. But with VB, the AS people have an advocate's interest in goosing the ratings so VB will fall into the "more" category. I wish them luck.

As to the Elektra ad, if they've got the money, AS has got the time. That's what they sell, and that's what pays for the shows we love and hate. So go to the kitchen or the toilet if you don't like the movie or the ad. (^_*)

Considering the ad in question is airing on [as] and taking up 2 hours of programming time that could be spent on, y'know, programming, yeah, I thought it was somewhat germane to the discussion. It took a rather long response to explain my opinion fully.

Considering the ad in question is airing on [as] and taking up 2 hours of programming time that could be spent on, y'know, programming, yeah, I thought it was somewhat germane to the discussion. It took a rather long response to explain my opinion fully.

I wasn’t aware the Elektra spot was two hours and that all AS programming would be preempted to air it. Though I assume you meant 2 minutes. Two minutes of time that would be used to air advertisements anyway.

If your eyes glazed over and didn't feel like reading all of it, it's not my problem, but it's not like I was throwing out flames at anyone or anything.

It was everyone else who tried to take it further and further because it's easier to go around the block 9 or 10 times than it is to just admit that it's a bad idea. Don't confuse my opinions with their tangents--I stuck pretty close to the topic at hand.

But hey, you're the mod.

Your opinion != fact.

I don’t mind discussion that strays or drags out a bit, it happens in a lot of threads. However, beating the same subjective point to death is no different than say having people argue over dubbed anime versus subbed anime…it goes on and on and in the end nothing substantive is established. That is why it is time to step away from the topic.

If you have more comments on this PM me.

That is correct. Apologies for the typo--two minutes, not hours. Dyslexia fun can be. ;)

Y'know, I didn't realize until recently just how much I missed Big O. May even pick up the DVDs sometime in the future. :DI just started watching it. Its an awesome show. Hopefully, it'll stay on the block for the next few months.

Here's a query: Thursday is premiere encore night, no? Last I checked Tom and Sealab weren't premieres. Why not just move the premieres up a half hour each?

and why did they play Toodle Day and not WWLazers? Because the recent Sunday airing of WWLazers was an programming error, with WS fixing it for the Thursday airing (it similar to how the US premiere of the Cowboy Andy episode of Cowboy Bebop was on a Thursday to WS accidentally showing Jupiter Jazz Part 1 on the Sunday time slot that it was supposed to air).

Plus they don't want anime messing with their prestigious comedy section. So why are they moving Saturday anime up a half hour in February?

So why are they moving Saturday anime up a half hour in February? Because AS is switching the days that Venture Brothers and Super Milk-Chan air.

Milk-Chan is considered a comedy show. Any comedy, even the lowest of them, still takes presedence over action.

So why are they moving Saturday anime up a half hour in February? I'm actually surprised they're not trying to put Family Guy on six days a week.

Except the fact it's the last show on Thursdays and will be the last show when it moves to Saturdays?

More accurately AS is bumping the VB reruns to move FMA up a half hour, and judging by its ratings success it earned its way there.

Milk-Chan is considered a comedy show. Any comedy, even the lowest of them, still takes presedence over action.

Really? Then why is Milk Chan being sent to the graveyard slot of 1:30AM when it joins the Saturday lineup?

edit: Damn you Swordfish!

Well, that makes more sense, seeing as the reaction to Milk-Chan so far has been universal hate.
