New announcement by SwimBuddha, which reads as follows:
Hey! Hey! Hey! Please join Kim Manning, Nick Weidenfeld and myself on Thursday night, Jan. 20, from 9-10 p.m. EST for a first-ever message board Q & A. It's the start of a new year, after all. And perhaps you wonder what all is going on and coming up, right? We'll let you know!
A general guide...
Kim will answer stuff about scheduling and licensed shows and anime.
Nick will answer stuff about new shows in development and the '05 slate of new. (What Nick cannot do is take pitches in this venue, so don't do that. He can, however, tell you how to pitch correctly.)
I will answer stuff about teh website.
Looking forward to it. Please join us.
See you there.
These are always good for a laugh. Any questions that need to be asked?
I've been meaning to inquire about whether or not WS plays favorites in anime genres.

How much do you want to bet they won't really tell us the answers to the questions we really want to know, I.E. Will there be new Venture Brothers?
We're too close to CN's 'upfront' month, surely they'll be keeping some information to release then.

I predict they will play things close to vest and give is more informatioin on things we already know about: Seth Green's Show, maybe explain what 12oz Mouse is, some additional info on Perfect Hair Forever, update on Squidbillies (unlikely), maybe some more info on the summer anime acquisition they are looking to make, etc. There is definitely alot to talk about.
However, I wouldnt be surprised if they finally announced Venture Bros fate, well, that is if they have decided to renew it for a second season. I wouldn't hold my breath on Case Closed...I think its almost certain that won't be getting new episodes.
But like Discloner said, they are a few months away from the upfronts as well as summer cons so I'm not banking on a lot of jaw dropping annoucements. But I'm willing to bet they have several nuggets they want to put out there.

Case Closed got too high of ratings to not be shown again.
Not really. Ratings were low, which is why this is happening.
My next question for them.
Can you cancel Tom Goes to the Mayor and Sealab 2021 forever? Please? Pretty-please?:)

Even if Case Closed got in the 300'sK ratings as Duke recalls being stated on the ASMB, I don't think that qualifies as "low", persay. Inuyasha was stuck at around 300K on Saturdays for its last couple months before Fullmetal Alchemist took over. Case Closed made some great accomplishments, occasionally making the Top 30 12-17 despite being aired at 1AMEST.. if only Cartoon Network was willing to look outside 18-34 I think it could have a very bright future.

Comparing Saturday ratings to weekeday ratings is not an apples to apples comparison. 300K on a weekeday is steady if not mediocre, but nothing spectacular.
AS has no impetus to look into the 12-17 demo, its not where they make their money in terms of advertisers. In fact that entire demo has been mostly ignored by CN as a whole. If CC can't hold its own within the target age range then it shouldn't be on the air.

I am not trying to imply that [adult swim] look at 12-17 ratings.. and I am aware that the demographic is ignored by Cartoon Network.. I was just speaking from a hypothetical, in-a-perfect-world kindof viewpoint. At least it could probably have a better future if it gets to Canada.

Just spend the few thousand to buy all of the CC DVDs as they are released...there you can watch CC whenever you want and you don't need the ratings...
.Also I have a question:
Is perfect hair forever getting a full fleged series and if so, are you going to air the inital episode again?
Also when will the DVD be out?

What's the process in deciding to pick up an anime title? Is there anyway possible that Adult Swim will acquire original action programming (I know that Big O II was somewhat of a CN original, but I'm thinking a completely original show whether it's American or Japanese.) Also, I would like to hear how pitch a pilot.

I'd like to ask "Have you ever considered changing ASA into a 12-24 block so you can stop ignoring the majority of your audience?"

Yeah, YTV would probably air it before 10pm and target it towards the right audience. I still think they've already made up their minds and just can't say until the end of February, and decide to tease us while we wait.I think that's the case as well...which sucks for us in the meantime if true. However, if you think about it...doing such really gets the fans 'noisy' and essentially gets word about the show out. So I suppose it's all good in the meantime.

You think Big O is a mind****? You haven't seen anything yet.
Champloo, well...it's stylistic. It's awesome. It's one of the best Anime I've seen ever. The next Bebop, I'd gather.

But later from "Kimma"
"The decision not to pick up more Case Closed episodes was based on ratings - but we have 50 episodes, and we'll continue to air them from time to time."

^^^^ yes. i think she meant old episodes.
BTW, she's still answering questions. one i particularly find interesting -
Also, I know the movies are great, but we're having a problem with movies in general - people aren't watching them! We've picked up some great anime movies for 2005, and we'll experiment with them, see if we can get ratings. If they work, maybe we can pick up some Lupin movies. Right now, though it seems that our viewers don't like long-form stuff as much as quarter hours and half hours...
and
We'll have a break with Fullmetal Alchemist and Ghost in the Shell premieres over the summer, because the 2nd season episodes are still being dubbed. This summer Champloo and Paranoia Agent will just fill in on Saturdays where Ghost and Fullmetal were, and then when they're through, Ghost and Fullmetal will come back in the Fall. Comedy will stay at 11 on Saturdays for now, but we are moving action earlier - to 11:30 - starting in February.

That might have to do with the fact that people don't want to stay up till 2am to watch a movie. Maybe if they started earlier, or got a dedicated night.

I bet that does have a lot to do with it. At least since they do have the movies that format will be getting more shots. With FMA moving up to 11:30 in February, perhaps movies will also move up half an hour when they air. That would be a great way to test the late end theory as movies would end at least a little earlier generally.

Well two Geneon titles and one Bandai title have alreadly been annouced for 2005 on top of more Inuyasha from Viz. So I'm thinking ADV and FUNi will pass along 1 more anime each.
FUNi's would probably either be Baki or Burst Angel. Their other titles don't seem too likely for Adult Swim.
ADV has a slew of titles they could give Adult Swim and who knows maybe that EVA revamp could air (better dub and better visuals make all the difference). But I'm not holding my breath on that one. I'd sooner expect something lighter like GetBackers or Chrno Crusaide. But if they want to go with the comedy approach again... Glavin at AI thinks Cromanite High is a likely possibility.

ADV has a slew of titles they could give Adult Swim and who knows maybe that EVA revamp could air (better dub and better visuals make all the difference). The re-released Eva DVDs have the same crappy dub as they did in their original release; it's just been remastered into 5.1 audio.
But I agree, Funi and ADV do look like the most obvious candidates at the moment. If I had to guess, I'd go for Funi's Samurai 7, and ADV has a bucketload of titles just begging to be on AS. As long as it's not another Milk-Chan...

I haven't seem them, but I remember hearing that.
Before ADV started releasing the Platinum Edition of Eva, they re-released a couple discs containing episode 21-26 with new footage never before seen, billing them as the Director's Cut version of these episodes. Because they contained new footage, a new dub had to be done for these episodes. That's where the new voices for certain chracters came in.

Ah yes... Samurai 7. That's entirely a possiblity. But it wouldn't be in the running until at least Fall I'm sure. GSG isn't too likely... pretty otakuish isn't it? But hey we did get Wolf's Rain, WHR and Kikaider. But still... I think FUNi will surely offer it but CN wont bite. They probably wont bite on Burst Angel either. Kiddy Grade's a better show isn't it? Baki is a fighting anime... Something Adult Swim currently lacks... it might be a good choice.
Saiyuki would be fun and with Geneon working with CN again we could get all of the seasons and not just ADV's only season (and movie). But I think the general thoughts on it were... keep it away from AS lest we have another Inuyasha on our hands.
Can I say how much it would OWN if ADV let CN have New Fist of the North Star. I haven't watched much of it though but I did like some of the original series (which is clearly too dated now and on Encore Action anyway).
Chrno Crusaide would probably be best out of all of ADV's current titles since the girls dig those teen animes and Chrno is a sure bet with that audience (the Inuyasha and FMA loving audience). And there is of course plenty of male appeal as well. But dub is a little hard on the ears at times though... Greg Ayres AND Hillary Hagg... Oye... high pitched scream fest.
GetBackers would be fun but it's really really tame compared to the manga and not really "worthy" of Adult Swim because of this.

In the case of ROD, they have another option to test out the bad reception to movies theory. If I understand it right ROD is actually a 4 episode OVA series that AS combined into a "movie." So try breaking it back up into it's 4 episodes, run it a couple times, see if people watch it that way.

Also I think breaking up movies and showing them over a couple of weeks is a bad idea, because not many people would want to watch a movie after not seeing the first half of it because they didn't know it was on.

I don't think it would be that much different from many of the other shows the network has aired which rely heavily on continuity from one episode to the next, each episode picking up immediately where the previous left off.

With AS airing the weekday schedule of anime 3 days a week... That could work well for OVA's which are typically not 4 episodes. They could re-air ROD for one week as a special event when The Big O is done with it's run.
