why 'not enough posts' msg for avatar?

why, when i try to add a custom avatar, do I get 'not enough posts to use this avatar' msg?

well, now I've got the avatar, now to be allowed to delete my own posts...

You need to have made at least one post in order to have an avatar.

I think it's set so that you can delete any of your own posts, as long is it wasn't the first post of a thread. This is because deleting the first post of a thread deletes the entire thread, which would be unfair to anyone who had taken the time to reply.
