View Full Version : I hate radio these days.

Just want to share a story.

It's the spring of 2004. I just moved back to Nebraska, after spending a year in Maryland. One thing you should know about me (and my sister can vouch for this): I carry my walkman around with me... alot. I'm rarely seen without it. (I joked to one of my friends that if I go to Otakon 2006, I'll be known as 'the Captain Harlock cosplayer /w the headphones always on', heh. I'm strange like that)

So of course, I'm really happy to be back in the town with two of my favorite stations ever (105.9 and 92.3, which also happen to be stations my dad worked at before we moved to Florida. BTW, he still works in radio) and my dad told me about this nifty station that plays 80's/early, early 90's music.

Everything seems good for a while. I'm getting familiar with the newer stations... and then about... oh, a week or so later, I begin to notice something:

All the stations (except for 105.9 and 106.9) played WAY too many 'Three Doors Down' songs. I mean seriously! There were times I tuned in, heard 'Here Without You' and then minutes later as I quickly turn to another station, I heard 'Kryptonite'. Sometimes I even heard 'Away from The Sun' 5 times in ONE day on THE SAME station. O____O

This continued throught the summer, and it drove me crazy. Then it died down and my sanity returned.

... And now, they're torturing me AGAIN, only this time they're playing John Mayer's "Daughters", some song about a girl named Eleanor, this song by The Killers and of course... a new Three Doors Down song OVER AND OVER AND OVER. Keeeeee-ripes! At least the stations down in Orlando actually had VARIETY.

I mean, how often can a radio station these days play the same dang song to the point of past*overkill? D=

(Don't mind me. I'm both cranky and off my rocker today, and I had to vent this in the hopes of others sharing their own radio overkill experiences)

LOL! I know what you mean. :p They did that for the Evanescence songs "My Immortal" and "Bring Me to Life", too...

Apparently, (unless I'm wrong) the radio stations go solely on the number of requests they receive for a certain song. If a song receives a specified number of requests, the radio station is obligated to play it, even if it's something that doesn't pertain to the type of music they play. So, it's really the listeners that vote for that to actually happen and... yeah. (Once again, I could be totally wrong on this)

But, yeah, they still really need to do something about overkill. It does get annoying.

I mainly listen to radio stations that play a mix of modern rock and classic rock. My favourite is the local station, 94.9 The Rock (http://www.therock.fm/). :) The thing that annoys me with the stations that I listen to is that they overplay the same bands (older or new), but give very little attention to older bands with new albums.

One example is Alice Cooper. The local stations hardly ever play his songs ... maybe once in a blue moon. When his latest album, The Eyes of Alice Cooper ,came out in September 2003, the radio stations played "Novocaine" for a little while - and then it just disappeared off the airwaves. Of course, when Alice came to Toronto to play a concert, they'd play a whole bunch of his songs. The day after the concert, it was back to normal, and you were lucky if you heard any of his songs!

Most radio stations use national play lists, this is why most radio stations sound the same as they have the same play list.

I usualy listen to Z100 and KTU, and some times they play the exact same song simotaniously, also PLJ and Lite FM usualy play holiday music 24/7 now...so yeah satilite radio is 100X better than regular radio...

Ha, I almost never listen to radio these days (with the exception of the stations playing Christmas music right now). It's all the same stuff that I'm not interested in, and there are NO stations around here that harbor my tastes

radio sucks, period. if you're even lucky enough to hear a song between all the commercials, usually it's one you heard less than 30 minutes before. (and as was mentioned :^:, most of the stations out there have the same playlist.) I gave up on radio a long time ago. my CD collection goes everywhere with me, because I never want to listen to the radio again.

I don't listen to the radio that much anymore either. I've been spoiled rotten by those music channels digital cable offers. It's like satellite radio, but it's on TV. They play music FM rarely does. When I'm in the car, I listen to CDs or tapes. When I do listen to the radio, I listen to our local classic rock, oldies, and classical music stations.

Most overplayed song of all time(and this is actually on record somewhere): Nickelback, How you remind me.

They actually beat out: Zepplin's, Stairway to Heaven...which is the second most overplayed song.]

Radio sucks, it always has, that's why you get a CD player in your car,... if you don't already have one.

It's amazing....if you spent every single day flipping through radio stations since 1983, you could hear "I'll be Watching You" by Sting every single day of your life from then to now, and probably well into the future. Are you sure THAT isn't the most played song ever? I mean, Nickelback is pretty recent (and pretty awful).

Is there a "Z100" in every city?

Back around the end of the 80's, there was a new pop-hits radio station I was always listening to called Mix. It died in 1991 and since then over half of the stations that have debuted and quickly failed in Portland have ALL been named Mix for some weird reason....except for one, and that one is, ironically, an 80's station. I enjoy it, because I got my "old" Mix back!

This thing went by times played and when that first came out it was in a rotation where it was played nationally 6 times a day minimum, more so if played during most requested, which was the case. Ick.

Wait, I misunderstood. Is it in Maryland or Nebraska that they overplay songs? If it's in Maryland, then I totally agree with you. We get the same stations here, and pretty much every major station that plays even a little bit of modern rock airs Three Doors Down songs ad nauseam.

Right radio playlist are so small, if you compaired it to 70's rock radio you'd see how lame modern radio is. Hey radio stations try getting more music, even my LP collection has more songs  and they are only a fraction comparied to my mp3 collection.

I experienced this a few years ago when I could swear I heard the same 5 songs every morning and afternoon of my commute. Eventually I switched to Sports Talk radio, which can be tedious at times when idiot fans call in suggesting the strangest of moves teams should make. But in a town where there are four professional sports teams that I follow it's a much better alternative then "groundhog day" pop radio.

99.1 has gotten alot better this year. They really added alot of stuff you wouldn't think you'd hear on the radio these days, like Green Day's Jesus of Suburbia. They had The Cure as the headliners for the HFStival this past summer as well. Granted, they still have a long way to go, but improvement is improvement.

Even the "classic rock" station, 94.7, has done a bit better of a job this year, though I do miss the Mark, Art and Alley morning show.

Wow.... I haven't listened to the radio in quiet some time. I just go out and buy the cds or [I dare not say] the songs I want to listen to. Radios... I wasn't a big fan of them either.

This is why satellite radio is going to take off. Those of us in smaller towns have about zero variety in regular radio, and even those in big cities with a choice still have to deal with 20-25 minutes of commercials evey hour and "clean" songs. I bought my XM unit solely for Opie & Anthony, but when they're not on there are about five music stations and four talk stations that have something worth listening to. That's something I've never been able to say about the awful radio stations here.

Eh, I still think DC radio sucks these days. 94.7 almost never plays anything I haven't heard 100 times before. 99.1 has become a bit more diverse (they now play a little punk and metal), but it's still too alternative for me. My favorite station used to be DC101, but now they're using some sort of national playlist and it's just the same 20 songs over and over. 97.9 is still pretty good, but it's hard to pick up in DC.

That and stupid DJs that don't know we want to hear the music not their stupid voice. Number of times they even start talking before the song is even fully over (Newsflash for DJs just because there is no more lyrics don't mean the song is over. Wonder what they would do with a lyricless song?)

99.5 in the D.C. area is a Top 40 station. They even call it "Hot 99.5". DC 101 does mix their playlist up a little, I occasionally hear RATM's first single, but they are pretty much mainstream rock. No suprise that they're Clear Channel owned and programed. So. 97.9 aka 98 Rock out of B-more, but they do seme to have a bit more independance in their programing.

Well, 94.7 is "classic rock", so repition is going to be a big part of their playlist. While a number of those bands may released new music in the last couple years, it doesn't seem to get much notice from the programers. 94.7 has aired some new stuff in one of their promotional bits, but it's still pretty limited. But hey, radio in D.C. is still better then in alot of other markets.

Wow, I never realized just how many people from the D.C. area we had on the Board.

Exactly.

98.9 down in Orlando used to let the songs play all the way through until the end. I miss that... wish more stations did that. =/

And yeah, I'm thinking of getting satellite radio for my new car next year. Now that my dad isn't working in mainstream radio anymore (he's now working for a local Catholic station, and they don't worry about ratings at all), I don't have to feel guilty about considering that. XD Even *he's* thought of it, heh.

As for 'How You Remind Me' being the most overplayed song ever... I can't say I'm surprised. But back down in the south, they played the hell out of 'Sweet Home Alabama'. (101.1 did before they went alternative) XP I couldn't escape that song if I wanted to.

They used to be much heavier. Now they'll play surprisingly wimpy stuff. Also Elliott sucks. I'm not really a Stern fan, but it's the only thing worth listening to in the morning. Man, I miss the days when Grease was on DC101.

So. 97.9 aka 98 Rock out of B-more, but they do seme to have a bit more independance in their programing.

They definitely have more edge than DC101.

I know it's classic rock, but most of these bands have recorded dozens and dozens of songs yet 94.7 only plays maybe the top 3 from most bands. Boring. Play some obscure stuff.

But hey, radio in D.C. is still better then in alot of other markets.

Really? It sure isn't better than Ohio.

Ugh, I hate the radio here. I used to listen to the rock station here, 97.5, but recently it changed into a not to much rock station (I'm really confused as to what it is now). So that left 96.7 Kiss FM, which plays so much crap 24/7. In a day, I'll be lucky if I hear two songs I like on that station. Thus, I always listen to my CDs.

Well, I know radio in much of PA isn't much better, and radio in Phoenix AZ sucks majorly. DC has the good luck of having a good crop of personalities on the dials, and a number of them have been around for years. Plus, 99.1's now got Big O and Dukes and The Sports Junkies, and they've been a real help for their on air life.

And yeah, Elliott sucks, majorly. Roche would be soooooo much better in that role. And he might actually play music as well. :d

Uggg, radio has sucked for years. constant commercials, call in contests, promotions, short playlist that if you listen more than an hour you've heard all five songs twice. I'd rather have it off without my CD's. I want Jpop, anime and some Trance music and lite rock (I like Three doors down though, it's not all bad) . I need a better CD collection. If the stations aren't pushing it, it's hard to find to buy or you have no idea what it sounds like.

Radio....ho hum. I only listen to classical music on Gonzaga University's station (well, it does help me concentrate when I draw...) and occasionly the rock station. Everything else bites because the songs are all pop, rap, and annoying country. All three, with a few exceptions like perhaps some bands on the line of pop/rock like U2, I utterly hate to no end. I also live by a bunch of radio towers, which when you have a weak receiver (Such as the one in my CD player), all you hear is the crappy pop station 93.5. Their studio is like a mile or two away from my apartment complex.

I'd rather listen to my Launchcast radio or hook up my vast MP3 collection to my stereo.

God! The radio! ARRRRRRRRRRRGHHHH! CURSE YOU 106.5! CURSE YOU! Repeating the same terrible songs day after day aggghh! Lets have a little "One Thing" by finger eleven...(a song that was never very good in the first place) play 3 times a day! Followed by that annoying song by shinedown that runs on one sentence! "what I really meant to say...is I'm sorry for the way I am! I never meant to be so cold!" aggggghhhhhhhhhhhh but did you mean to repeat that single line enough that my head would explode? Huh? Huh? I was hooked on Lite FM for years, but I moved on. I love WCBS FM because it plays all my oldies (Unlike Lite FM, which can have its modern turkeys.) I don't listen to Z100 or KTU, because I dislike modern music.

I've been listening to the talk shows on WFAN-AM a lot recently.
