Say "Puffy Pen Pal" and was disappointed as to how cliche the episode played out. The whole exectations leading to something opposite has been done to death. I think the animation is visually appealing, but there is something about the weak writing that makes this show so vanilla! I believe it can still target the key demographic but still be captivating. The idea has so many possibilities, yet, is consistently delivering a flat performance. I've been having more fun watching Nick Jr. talk down to me compared to this recycled animated sitcom dressed up as a hip J-pop inspired flash toon.
Anyone else agree?

It's the curse of Mitch Watson. The same doofus who wrote idiotic scripts that had nothing to do with wrestling in Mucha Lucha, writes scripts that have nothing to do with rock stars in Puffy. Bad scripts too.

You know I don't even think the show really needs better writing, it would be nice but I really don't mind the writing as is. BUT I really wish they would try to be more original with their plots. I also wish they would focus a little more on the realm of being a rockstar or have some other sort of focus. Right now they just go through the first plot that pops in their head.

Anyone else agree?Recycling sitcom plots is one thing put Puffy goes the extra mile and recycles Loony Toon plots.
Anyway tonight was alright, average or maybe even below when compared to the rest of Puffy. The visuals seemed a little lacking tonight. Nothing interesting.

Plots? what plots? This show is Mork and Mindy in a nutshell. Two people, walkin around, hangin out, generally not getting anywhere. The show will eventually run out of ideas and start making episodes like "Ami blinks irreguarlly when eating her breakfast" or "Yumi clips her toenails." Just recycling plots from sitcoms.

Yeah, and "Foster's" and "Spongebob" are both plotless shows, but they don't rely so hard on tired sitcom ideas. Its a cartoon...they need to start pushing the envelope. At this rate we're guarnteed to see a school dance, a parental visit, a spat over a boy, and a dream sequence episode! Help us all. If I wanted these tired ideas, I'd watch TV Land.
I'm not usually so harsh with cartoons, since I don't claim to be a writer for television, but these ideas are so BLAH. Two of the biggest names in pop-rock from Japan and this lukewarm good girl/bad girl thing is all they can come up with? I think the insanity of the live-action shots much more interesting, despite having miminal dialogue. The girls are able to at least make "plotless" interesting. Can't say the same for the writers.

First part, had good ideas and everything....just to9o much opera for me, and the plot was bad.
Second was good, but also annoying.
Third was the best, only quality one like the first episodes.

What this show is missing that those other shows have are CHARACTERS. "The Angry One" and "The Cheery One" are not characters....they're hollow cliches. This show might be able to get away with reusing old plots if they had actual characters that surprised you with how they responded to those familiar plot points. But they don't, so the audience is left yawning....and changing the channel. Anyone notice how the talkbacks for this series have gone from the thousands to the low, low hundreds and it's only like 5 episodes into the run?

That happened with Foster's talkbacks also, first one had around 5 pages or so, and by the end, maybe 2 pages.

The last episode of Fosters had 835 views of the discussion (it's the only Fosters discussion still available on the site)--even if there were only 2 pages of actual commentary, people demonstrated interest in the show. This brand new, highly promoted episode just premiered and there are 175 views. Even episode 40-something of Billy&Mandy seems to generate more interest than Puffy, and the series is 3 years old.
If this was on practically any other network...the Japanese would be subtitled so we can actually read what they're saying...
I will say this: I am SO glad this wasn't a true anime.

Really? I felt a vibe this show is like The Beatles Saturday morning cartoon(Not "Yellow Submarine"). A rock band(though not as famous) have crazy adventures & other bull*****.

Its supposed to be like a rock group on the road, but that's exactly why it's failing, in my opinion. You can put these characters in every location in the universe, and we're just as likely to be bored! I just get ticked because you'd think after the pilot, the staff would show some people and get some honest critiques. I believe "its cute" isn't really a compliment. Its a blow off statement. "Its funny" is a compliment.

But no one can say "it's funny" and be honest in the same sentence....

"Puffy Pen Pal"
1. For the poem, I thought instead of "macaroni," I thought it was gonna say "makes him horny." :D
2. I thought Pierre's smell would've been "bleu cheez." :)
3. More Japanese insert - Ami: "Oeeeeeeeee!" (like CCSakura) :o
4. Wasn't that geek boy too young for Ami? Statutory rape like that Michigan teacher?
"Save the Farm"
1. Even more Japanese inserts - Yumi: "Chotto matta!" :ack:
2. That farm song - they already used that song before.
3. Ami: "Watashi no Buta-chan." Something about "my pig-chan" or something.

I think it would be better if it were actually done by Japanese people. Instead of these American fools who seem to have an unhealthy obsession with these two. Some words come to mind, Nerds, Geeks, Lame... As well as some phrases, Pointless Living and such. I picture the animation studio to be a guys basement, cleverly remoddeled into a Japanese girl shrine.
Sorry I'm a little tipsy.

Yeah, I'm still watching and enjoying HHPAY, but there really is no core to this show. As I rather suspected would happen before the show started airing, I'm really just running on an otaku-ish "OMG J-POP!" thing here. And that's pretty sad considering Teen Titans borrows more from anime than HHPAY does.

This has to be one of the "WORST" animated shows based on a live action rock group that I have ever seen. For starters, the animated girls speak perfect American english, while their human counterparts barley speak the english language.Next up, the animated girls don't look anything like the real girl group from Japan, as if the way the look, they belong in an episode of Pokemon and not this series. The animation is so-so but could be better, that gags don't cut and the storylines are pretty weak.
If Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi wants to make it big here in the states, then this series isn't helping then get the attention.Yuck!
And what kind of name is Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi Gumi????
