Not that many people probably care, but The My Little Pony season 1 set has a few problems:

- They're the Disney Channel edited episodes (The 'to be continued' tags are sloppily edited out, cutting off dialogue and music, etc.)

- The recaps are edited out

- The two pilots are the edited versions shown on 'My Little Pony & Friends'

- The original 'My Little Pony & Friends' theme is nowhere to be found.

- No special features at all

- The audio doesn't sound right in a few episodes

But on the plus side:

- The 30 second MLP intro is still intact (No horrid My Little Pony Tales theme)

- A 'Play as continuous movie' feature for the multi-part episodes (With that, 'The End of Flutter Valley' now plays as a feature length movie.)

- There's 52 episodes total (or 26 half hour episodes)

Damn, that sucks. But, you said they are the Disney Channel edited version right? I don't think that is their fault, but the person they were given the masters from.

Speaking of mistakes, is it true that S2pt1 of GIJoe uses the UK version for the 5.1 audio? If so, have they offered fixed versions yet?

I haven't picked S2P1 yet, but hopefully I'll have the funds for that by Tuesday.

But are some of the songs intact, like the Sea-Ponies number in the 1st special or 'Let the bell of freedom ring!' piece in one episode?
I don't care what anyone thinks, I'm gonna get this DVD!!

Most of the songs, including the two you mentioned, are intact. As far as I can tell, only one song is gone. The one from 'Escape from Katrina' where they're explaining how Katrina used to be nice is gone, which isn't Kid Rhino's because they obviously weren't given the original masters.

The songs aren't as horrible as I remember, some, like 'Let the Bell of Freedom Ring' are actually right up there with some of the better Jem songs.

Every MLP ep is on there except the final 13 eps from S2. The box says it's a total of 50 episodes, so I'm guessing they're counting the two 'specials' in the total, so it's really 52 since they're broken up into two parts. (Escape from Katrina has Part 2 tagged onto it's second half)

Who said that Rhino made mistakes with the G1 transformers DVD release?

I've heard complaints about the audio and the remastering on the Season 1 set. I think there's a thread with all the complaints on the G1 set buried somewhere on this board.

Is there a point to releasing an edited version of a tv series? Is this

a)Rhino being greedy and assuming that the twelve people who buy this set won't care about edits, or if they do they won't scream loudly enough to make a difference

b)they'd announced the product before realizing the masters were edited, and had sunk enough money into the set that to cancel it would be a big loss?

I think it's a combination of the two. If it's the case of them just having access to the copies of what Disney Channel had, that might explain why it wasn't a full 'My Litlte Pony & Friends' release. Maybe they couldn't get the unedited masters with the Glo Friends and Potato Head Kids segments without paying more.

In any case, it's still a good set, and if you never saw the original versions, you're might not even notice the edits. (Except on the end of Ghost of Paradise Estate, Part 3, when they cut off the characters mid-sentence)

See I have an issue with that. If it's the parent company refusing to turn the original masters over or a legal matter, fine. But if the company just refuses to pay a bit more for unedited copies of a show, that's garbage.

You can argue that "well not many people will probably buy the set, so it's not worth it to pay extra for the originals" in which case the question becomes "why even bothering putting out a season set if the company doesn't think there'll be adequate sales?"

Unless if Glo Friends and the Potato Head kids were so horrifingly bad that ppl who buy My Little Pony wouldn't pay to get those shows as well (ex. I wouldn't pay to get the Slimer episodes from the Real Ghostbusters), but that still doesn't explain the edits to the My Little Pony episodes.

If it meant getting full, edited, untampered with episodes, I'd be willing to sit through 'Potato Head Kids' and 'Moon Dreamers'. I had no problems with 'Glo Friends' and hope Kid Rhino eventually puts those episodes out.

As for the edits, Disney needed more My Little Pony eps to run 5 days a week since they only had 13 episodes the newer and crappier 'My Little Pony Tales', so they just took the original run and for some reason chopped off the 'My Little Pony & Friends' theme, slapped on the 'Tales' theme (which thankfully isn't on the DVD), the recaps, and the 'To Be Continued' tags. The theme and the recaps I had no problem with, but the 'To Be Continued' tags were part of the show, and when those were lost, so were moments of dialogue and music cues.
