Does anyone own the Fantasia DVDs? I was just watching my old VHS copies, and I'm considering getting them on DVD. How are the DVD versions? I think I might get them if only for better quality and the original aspect ratios. What is the OAR for Fantasia (the first one)?

It has about 6 minutes of Deems Taylor footage that was cut from the vhs version, and it also features an intermission. Unfortunetly none of the soundtrack recordings for the reinstated DT sequences apparantly survive so Disney brought in Corey Burton (who sounds much more snooty than Taylor) to rerecord all of his dialogue. It's a shame they couldn't find someone who could do a closer approxamation but 'dems the breaks. Fantasia was (like every other Disney film up to 1956) made in 1.33:1 full frame so it is OAR. If you can find a copy of Fantasia Anthology, I heartily recomend it.

Thanks, that answered a lot of my questions. I read about the DT footage in a review, but I didn't know it wasn't on the VHS. I figured its OAR was full frame I just wasn't sure. I'm going to look around for the Anthology.

I was particularily wondering if there were any edits to the movies, since Disney seems to do that often. Specifically in regards to the Nightmare on Bald Mountain sequence, because it had a couple of nipple shots.:p

Back in the 60's, Disney cropped out sterotypical black centaurs, and those edits still remain.

Incidentally, Fantasia was added to the PLATINUM line earlier this year. There are currently 14 in the group, with one being released every six months. So if you're patient, you'll have it in your hands in five years max, three-to-four years if you're lucky.

I own both Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 on DVD and they're both awesome. I highly recommend both of them although you may have to pay a steep price for a new copy. (F2K set me back $30). Again like Einbebop says, your best bet is probably to wait until it's rereleased. Maybe they'll put BOTH versions on a two-disc set.

Edit: I mean of the original version. The version WITH the intermission and without.
