I'm sorry, but that just looks a little too... (how can I put this politely)... gay. I really don't like the look of Emo Wonka.

How about feminine? Because I honestly can't see how a poster could be homosexual or happy.

Interesting. I am very reminded of Angel Sanctuary's Mad Hatter in that teaser poster.

Jeez, I didn't even realize this was being remade... with TIM BURTON at the helm. Well all I've gotta say is, I'll be interested to see if this can top the original, but I doubt it. As for Johnny Depp as Wonka, I loved him as Jack Sparrow, but as Wonka? Hmm, I don't know... but I'll reserve further judgment until I atleast see a trailer.

I'm just saying that Gene Wilder's performace will be difficult to top.

I wasn't planing on seeing this but the poster lowered my expectations for this a whole lot more!

I'm trying to figure you what people were expecting when Tim Burton is put behind an adaptation of one of the most creepy children stories ever written starring Johnny Depp. Anyway I like it, the costume design is modern but keeps the original elements of the suit and Depp looks offbeat and creepy which is a good thing.

This is the first I'd heard that there was going to be a new/retelling Wonka movie, and my initial knee-jerk reaction was, leave it alone! Wilder was Wonka, and some of the movie was so well done.

But then, I remembered those horrible Oompa Loompas. But still, I fought the urge to look at the poster.

I gave in, and I see that it's a Burton film. Well, Roald Dahl's works can be a tad bizarre (I loved some of his Twilight Zone episodes), and Burton can be just the guy to appreciate and bring out the more abstract elements of his writings. So, I'm sort of looking forward to it.

However, the poster is all wrong. Either have Depp look mysterious (head) or a dandy (body). Not both. Trying to combine the two looks together, the pose just falls apart.

I can't wait! Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a great book, and the first movie is one of my all-time favorites. . . so take that and add Johnny Depp and I'm happy! :anime:

Looks pretty cool. And it's nice that they're calling it [i]Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, to be true to the book and to differentiate it from the other movie. And I'm assuming this won't be a musical, which gives it more potential than other "remakes" to have value compared to the "original" (even though this isn't really a remake, just another take on the book).

I guess I should have never counted on traditional Wonka after hearing Burton was at the healm. Ugh. Looks like Marilyn Manson.

I guess I should have never counted on traditional Wonka after hearing Burton was at the healm. Ugh. Looks like Marilyn Manson.Don't be too quick to criticize. The original gets a lot of praise, but let's remember that author Roald Dahl did not like the movie. And the Dahl estate, aware of that, approved this second take on the book because of Burton.

Personally, I'm hoping this is more of a readaptation of the book than a remake of the first film. Wilder was just about the only good thing in that movie.

Personally, I'm hoping this is more of a readaptation of the book than a remake of the first film. Wilder was just about the only good thing in that movie.I think that's the idea. Might as well start from the source. That's where it's most twisted, which I'm sure Burton appreciates.

Anyway, I love the original, and I remember quite fondly our teacher reading it to us in first grade. Mix that in with one of my favorite directors and one of my favorite actors and boom! Can't wait for this movie, and I'm totally diggin' the poster.

I know I read the book a looong time ago but I can't remember much. :gir: Well, I do remember it was much darker than the original movie version. *nods* Yup, very weird. 'Guess I'll have to re-read it before the movie comes out. :zim:

And Johnny Depp is a freakin' chamelian, I think he'll do fine. ^-^

Ok 1st of all this is a more developed version of the Book than the Orginal. Sure Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was a good movie. However you got to understand with Tim Burton at the helm its going to be a little bit creepy.

Also this is not a musical so don't think it as one. The only thing Musical in this movie will be the Oompa loompas songs and that was indeed in the book from what I recall. Don't judge the movie already based on the poster. Wait till a Teaser Trailer comes out and then an Offical Poster and then the Final Trailer. No matter what Though I am a big Tim Burton fan and Depp fan so I will see this movie no matter what.

Personally, I'm hoping this is more of a readaptation of the book than a remake of the first film. Wilder was just about the only good thing in that movie.Besides a great screen play, great music, well done set and costume designs, and of the scariest scenes in film ever.

Yeah, everyone complaining about how dark it looks needs to realize this is NOT A REMAKE. It has nothing whatsoever to do with Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

DarkAngel
11-09-2004, 06:59 PM
Sorry, he wrote both. It's just that since there are a lot of other people involved in the movie, I've always been under the impression it was more the director and/or studio that impacted how the movie turned out and not Dahl. I meant to stress he didn't like the adaptation or translation to the screen. But I see what you were getting at now with your earlier post. Maybe he was critical of his own screenplay? I've assumed that wouldn't have been the case.

EDIT: Well, it seems a guy named David Seltzer was actually responsible for the screenplay. Dahl wrote it, Seltzer rewrote it. There's some info about it here (http://http://www.roalddahlfans.com/articles/char.php). That makes more sense than Dahl being upset at his own screenplay.

Sorry, he wrote both.
He got credit for it, but it was taken from him and changed.
Dahl himself said "Hollywood really f***** it up"

I don't know what to think, really. I hope it's not too freaky. I like The Nightmare Before Christmas (see avatar  ) but I haven't really seen enough of Tim Burton's other work to have a feel for it. I don't know, I might go see it.

The first movie was a staple of my childhood, Depp is immensely talented, and I liked some of Burton's stuff.

With that said, I'm more than a little skeptical about how this thing's gonna turn out.

Scary as in "that thing could murder you with his own hands in the dark", not "that thing could kill you by looking at his goofy suit". ;)

The kids look great, but that Oompa Loompa is just horrible. A guy in a red space suit? I'd take the novel's hairy men in grass skirts any day :p

And Depp looks great as Wonka in those new pics. He's really got that innocent-yet-creepy look to him. Can't go wrong with this one.

Hmm...

Gene Wilder will always be Willy Wonka in my heart. That's the role I first saw him in, and I'll always connect it to him. Depp might pull it off, but he has a creepy "Michael Jackson" vibe to his costume and makeup (ease up on the paleness!)

The Oompa Loompa is just bad. I'm sorry, but they should have stuck closer to the classics. The originals were actually a bit scary...these are just midgets in an ugly suit. They need better makeup and coloring.

The kids are all right, though I'd picture Violet as a bit fatter and brunette.

I'll probably see it, but Depp's performance will make or break it.

You people don't actually think that the Oompa Loomas are going to be wearing the suit the whole movie, do you? It's probably just for the wonkavision scene or a scene where they're working at some kind of a machine.
