Well, after spending the last 3 weekends (2 weeks technically) watching the Mummy movies, I am glad to be done with them. They were pretty good, but man, The Mummy's Ghost and The Mummy's Tomb were so freaking redundant when compared to The Mummy's Hand. My favorite of the 5 is The Mummy's Curse though. That was different than the other 3, and went by the quickest. I did like how the 4 movies were connected, but by Curse, it should have taken place around 1990 because it kept going 25-30 years later.

The documentary was pretty nice to, and I can see where a lot of inspiration from all 5 movies came in in the newer Mummy movies.

I give

The Mummy a 3/5 stars
The Mummy's Hand a 3/5 stars
The Mummy's Tomb a 2/5 stars
The Mummy's Ghost a 2.5/5 stars
The Mummy's Curse a 4/5 stars

Next week my g/f and I start watching the Creature Trilogy.

I think the later Mummy movies pale compared to the original. Nothing against ol' Kharis, but he rarely had the type of pathos and gravity that Imhotep did. Kharis spent most of his time being someone else's tool of destruction. Given how eight years (real time) passed between the production of The Mummy and The Mummy's Hand, it makes sense that they just started over with a new Mummy. It's kind of like how The Invisible Man's Revenge doesn't even make mention of the previous Invisible Man characters.

Overall, considering how cheap these are, the sets are worth it just for the original movies and the occasional sequel gems that can be mixed in (for example, I was surprised by how much I liked Dracula's Daughter. A reluctant vampire, nice twist). I'm not quite sure about the Creature set. A lot of it just seemed a little bit too '50s cheesy, but by the end of the third movie (which most people say is the weakest) the Gill Man finally seemed to have turned into one of Universal's trademark sympathetic monsters.

I liked Return of the Creature best, and hated the third one. Turning the Creature into a freaking humanesque being was just horrible.

Well, not a lot happened in that movie besides. But it was so sad the way he would stare out at the water like that. That's what pulled the whole thing through for me. I'm not saying it was the best of the movies, though. The second one was definitely better than the first. It was easier to sympathize with the monster after he had been captured, dragged to Florida and then poked and prodded by scientists. Also, his fixation on the female lead seemed a little more believable in that she actually seemed to show some small amount of empathy toward the Gill Man which he seemed to sense. In the first movie, everything seems largely territorial. The people are in his lagoon and he wants them dead for trespassing, except for the girl who he wants for himself. It's kind of basic, really. The whole thing is sort of a progression of the Creature through the trilogy. First, people invade lagoon and Gill Man tries to get rid of them. Then, people abduct Gill Man and bring him into human world. They then poke and prod him like he's an experiment. Finally, Gill Man is found again and turned into a human creature like the ones who mistreated him. He is then cut off from the place that was home and will do anything to get back.

Though, maybe this conversation is better left for another talkback.
