View Full Version : Anyone else as crazy about cars as me?

I was cruising around a few hours ago and had an epiphany. I was shifting it into fourth at like 3 grand going 50 and I realized just how much I love my car. It actually amazed me just how attached I am to her. I never noticed it but I talk to her when I'm driving, and I apologize whenever I hit a bump. And it's not like I'm doing this to be funny or anything-I don't even notice it. My car just means so much to me. It's a sort of deep bond I seem to share with her, and no-one else I know seems to get it.
Everyone else I know is like "Yeah, I drive a lexus. It's cool, and it's better than your car." They just don't understand what it's like hanging your rear wheels out around a turn, smoke billowing up beautifully as you redline in second. How can these people think of their cars as mere appliances? They treat their cars like washing machines or refridgerators.
So, does anyone else here actually get what I'm saying, or all of you like the kids at my school?
So heres what I drive.

Except that I've got a cooler, more aggresisive air dam, a small m-styled wing in the back and I need a new paint job:o
It's a stick (duh), I've got a hopped up engine management system, exhaust, a new intake manifold, K&N cold air intake, Strut tower brace, and mostly new suspension components. I currently have the following parts (or will shortly) and hope to get them on soon.
Turbo, oil cooler, intercooler, new sway bars, rims, and an alpine head unit. I'm hoping for 270 some odd rwh. It's gonna be nuts, especially considering that it's a full size sedan that weighs in at less than 3000 lbs (2900something.)
Man, I love classic BMWs. So, anyone else wanna share their relationship with their ride?

I'm not really crazy about cars (Except the 80's rock band, lol! "Shake It Up" "Good Times Roll" "You're All I've Got Tonight" and "Let's Go" are awesome songs!). I really liked Volkswagon Bugs when I was little. I do enjoy the new car smell, though.

I love cars.
I had a great 1962 International Harvester Scout, but I gave that to a local church before moving down here, as this house just doesn't have the garage space for it. I'd love one day to buy it back. But I don't know how likely that is.
Until I find some pics of it to scan, here's a 66 IH Scout in the same color (only mine had racing stripes on it, a big ole lift and huge tires).

My current car is my 98 Subaru Forester, which was my first brand new car. I bought it October of 97, and it currently has about 171,000 on it. It may not be much of a looker, but I'm a practical person. When I bought it, I was communting 2 hours a day from NH to Boston area and back... the Forester has the best crash test rankings for it's class, all wheel drive, and an horizontially opposed boxster engine.
I plan on getting 300,000 out of this car.
I'm hoping when I move out to florida, to get a motorcycle in addition. :D

It's a shame you had to let it go.Yeah, but I got a kick out of seeing Sister Jackie riding around in it. :D My little brother went to their school, and were always so good to him that it was a pleasure to donate it.

My family just got a Ford Explorer. Its got great horsepower. We take it out on the highway and look for an excuse to why we're driving it. It's just too much fun to drive.
We also have an old van, what is it called, Chevy Lexus. Breaks down every other time we drive it. Good thing we have jumper cables.

j/k, explorers are nice vehicles. But imagine something faster, lighter, better handling and more fun, and you got what I want my car to be.

Though I haven't finished my driving lessons yet, I used to have a car, which I got prematurly. I had a bog-standard 1989 Vauxhall Cavalier MK3 (aka Opel Vectra), it was one of the first models as it was an F-reg (I live in Britain, so F registration was Aug '88-Jul 89, I remeber the reg too), it was basic, all it was, was a 1.4 litre OHC engine, 5-speed manual gearbox, no power steering, but it was light on steering. It was a 4-door saloon (or sedan), and the colour was still bright red, not even a bit of pink was on the paint work, there was harly any rust. It wasn't realy secure, so I put an alram in. It was alright, it was just basic (I guess it was a modern Morris Marina ) but I had trouble going uphill as we have steep hills here in the Yorkshire dales. So I sold it, it was hardly used, it had trouble on the hills and it was expensive on insurance. I did have a photo of it when I was selling it on ebay, but I lost it when our computer had a virus.
Next car I'm thinking of getting will be either something like a Golf MK1, or Escort Mk3, or mebbe an Vauxhall Astra Mk1! I like oldies!!
About the Explorer oneeyemonkeypie, do they have a prob Exploding in the States, I know here in the UK, they had some prob with the driving or something, some people said they 'had a mind of thier own' and there was a few road accidents. Mind you it didn't sell very much here.

ah, british cars. Haven't talked about them in a long time. personally, I don't think that japanese cars are all that great, but they're ok. American cars are fine as long as they're pre-1975. And you don't need to apologize for hating french cars. I mean, peugot? come on now...
If you really want the ultimate best car in the world (that you can realistically afford), then you gotta go german. BMW, Porsche (the older ones are cheap), and maybe mercedes benz. Volkswagen is fair at best, tho. They're too much plastic nowadays.

And you don't need to apologize for hating french cars. I mean, peugot? come on now....Ah yes how could I forget Peugot, most other boys around my age (18-19 years old), always dream of having a Peugeot 205 as thier first car, and you're thinking "Why, they are pile of junk, they're only good for the scrap heap", last ones were made about 1996, and as for the other dream car the 106, it's dated, it been out since 1991 and they've announced a replacement for next year. Wasn't it right Peugot attempted to sell the 405 over in the States. My driving instructer said the only thing the French did descent were diesel engines for cars.
If you really want the ultimate best car in the world (that you can realistically afford), then you gotta go german. BMW, Porsche (the older ones are cheap), and maybe mercedes benz. Volkswagen is fair at best, tho. They're too much plastic nowadays.I havne't been in very many German cars, I've been in a 1989 Golf MK2, I think it was a GTi nice car. I was going to ask, what series is you Beemer. But as you say, most newer cars have too much plastic, not forgetting, there is too many computerised contols, at least my Vauxhall didn't have any  . A freind of mine has a 1997 Chrysler Neon, and he's told me it has a lot of computerised components and there isn't any spark plugs. About American cars, was there any prob from 1975?
I have a friend who knows every part, every model and every type of car...He can fix em, restore em, loves em, drives em, races them, sells them after he fixes em up, and is a true gearhead. Naw, I did even know they existed, but hundreds of thousands, perhaps a million or two are "gearheads" He is a great guy, honest, fair, and postive....He loves cars and cycles...He is a neat person to know, and has fixed my car...Naw, he isn't an old toon guy, he is 24. Stuart:D ps. he's got an Anniversery Mustang, one of 500 that were registered..88? or is it 89? Beats me...in mint shape, with all kinds of extra fire power,(I can't describe it other than it is really fast) take it from 0 - 60 in about 5 sec, or is it 6? Car is fast....real fast.

ya, 5 second is pretty damn respectable. That wouldn't be a saleen you're talking about, would it?
@Son Gokuu-yes, the computer systems in new cars are truly frightening. I truthfully want a 98 BMW, but aside from the fact that its too much $$$, I could never fix something like that. I think it's got like over 15 different computer systems. Ugh...
My car is a BMW 528e. 5 series, 2.8 liter. Soon with all the franken-mods I'm gonna do to it I need to rebadge it. I was thinking 528 eti. E for the engine block, I for the new cam and springs and engine comp, and t for turbo. Has a nice ring to it.
As for the american car thing-nothing wrong with newer cars, but the only american cars I really liked were muscle cars, and there were no decent ones after the mid '70s.

As for the american car thing-nothing wrong with newer cars, but the only american cars I really liked were muscle cars, and there were no decent ones after the mid '70s.There are a few foreign sports cars that I like. Mostly older. But I never cared for muscle cars.
That is, until I saw the Ford GT 4.0 prototype and then the actual car at the past few car shows here in Atlanta. Honestly... I could see myself sacrificing a few scruples to get into such a car. And for anyone who knows me, that's saying something.
As for newer afordable sports cars, the nissan 350z is a beautiful car.
Currently I'm trying to get my Mother to donate her delapidated current car and get a Crossfire. It's rough work, and she's determined to drive that car until it falls apart around her. But I took her to a showroom to see the Crossfire in person, and she weakened. A bit.

My car! It's a 2004 Dodge Neon SXT. I bought it September 11th of this year. It has the sport appearance package: 15" wheel upgrade, and center console/radio plate is silver to match the outside of my car, fog lights, and it has the little spoiler. It has the fun & sun package: Cd player, 6 speaker upgrade and the sunroof. And it's a manual, which I'm very proud of myself for learning. A manual is so much more fun than an automatic. I wouldn't trade it for anything now. I love my car to pieces. Mopar or no car. I'll post a picture of myself with it later, I actually don't have one with it right now. *adds that to her to-do list*
I love my friend Autumn's car too. She just got hers a week ago, it's a Black 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer OZ Rally. It's all decked out, performance tires and all, she's getting a pink pinstripe put on the sides of it soon. It's really nice.

guinaevere: That old International is awesome, it's a shame you had to get rid of it!
I like cars, I drive a '92 Chevy Blazer (it was our family car until we bought a 02' Tahoe), it's not the fastest, most nimble vehicle in the world, but I still love it. I can still remember the day my dad drove it home new even though I was only 6 or 7! I really like trucks, I wish I could have a Chevy Silverado SS or an SSR, but I'm only 18 so I obviously don't have the money.
I also like old muscle cars, especially the late 60's Camaros and Chevelles. I'm a die hard GM fan as you can tell due to the fact that every car I've mentioned in this post is made by Chevy!

ZorBrak brings up a mighty fine point. I have no affection for cars, but I've been a motorcycle fan since I was a wee laddy and I'm still planning to get one someday. Hopefully, I'll be able to afford a Ducati right in time for my mid-life crisis.
I once took a friend's bike (a CBR, if memory serves correctly) to high school, and it was one of my best days ever. Bringing an incredibly expensive and sleek motorcycle to school bumps you up the social ladder in a way that, all things considered, really isn't very fair at all.

Mind you here most modern cars here aren't really produced in Britain anymore. Ford closed down it's Dagenham plant some years ago, and Vauxhall closed down a few plants, I think the one in Luton is the only one left. Land Rover still have it's plant in Solihul I belive. Jaguars plant in Coventry plant closed down, and Rover (who used to be owned by BMW) still has it's Lonbridge plant, and there may be a few others, as some are taken over, Bentley is owned by VW and Rolls Royce is owned by BMW. At least we still make some sports. But for how long?
About computerised engines, there is a lot of all tnhis electronic stuff, I know another person I know, he had a '97 Hyundai Coupe and he told that was full of computerised stuff, now he's got a 2004 MG-ZT (a sporty Rover 75), and that has even more computer gadgets on, he told me you're not supposed to wash the car yourself and, supposed to put it through the car wash, as it has a lot of sensors. But computerised engines are also even in truck and buses too here. I bet it's a pain for my local bus operator with thier shiney new Volvo's then!
Oh yeah, AndreaBeaumont, I haven't drivine an automatic, since my instructers car is a manual, but I agree with, it is fun driving a manual, you've got a lot of control, you also have to remember not to let go of the clutch too fast, the times I've done that and I've either made the wheels skid and other times I've stalled it.

I've never been crazy about cars. Get me from A to B, in comfort if possible.
To me they are just a death trap. People worry about many things out of their control in the world - normally about things happening across the world but miss out how dangerous driving is. Yes, that mass murderer/terrorist/gang of youths may get you, but you are FAR more likely to be hit by a car or be injured in a crash.
I have that fear of cars - which means I don't really have a fondness for them. Fearing a mistake by myself or someone else. It sort of killed the love I used to have for sci fi cars in my youth - be it KITT or a Delorean... so no, not a car fan for the above reason!

@SJJ, um, if you're scared of cars I think you might not be in the right place.
I never got that.
SJJ and HumanoidTyphoon are perfect examples of this. I always thought of myself as smart (1510 on SATs) but these kinds of people are a complete mystery to me. How anyone could consider a car to be a mere appliance, or actually something to be avoided if possible, is completely beyond me.
I mean, its your car! Yours! Not anyone elses, you own it. It is your baby. It is completely devoted to you and will literally work itself to death if you simply ask it. Thats even more than a pet would do. The only thing that riles me up more than someone badmouthing my car is when someone vandalizes it. Some b!tch in my school threw a quarter at my car to be funny, and I stopped in the middle of traffic, parked it and got out. I went over to her car and yelled at her, banging on the window and yanking her door handle. She smartly locked it, cause I was gonna giver he what for. After she turned white as a sheet, I left and haven't had a problem since.
No one messes with my car.
Anyways, yeah thats cool andrea. I never liked dodge, especially neons, but I heard SXTs were hella fast. And a manual no less. Well, if I get a scholarship to college my folks are gonna pay me the difference and I can get another car (I'm never gonna sell this one.) Probably a new BMW, or maybe a late model RX-7. We can race!

Out of all the American car companies Dodge is by far the best. The new neon's are really really nice, not like the old one's. Solid cars, when you close the door it closes with a comforting thud not a cheap clatter of a hollow door panels. I love my girl. I like foriegn cars too, my options were a used '01 VW Cabrio, or an '00 Mitsubishi Eclipse, but you get a way better interest rate on new cars. I figured if I was gonna spend the money why not get a new car? That way it'll last me well PAST college.
I'm in my freshmen year of college and it really wasn't expensive at all Guin! I got it in September, summer sales drive. I think sticker it was $12,500, brand spankin' new. So it was a great deal. My parents put 2,000 down and I contributed 1,700. My payment is only 181 a month.
oneeye, it's a peppy car, it has get up and go, but it's no V8 with a supercharger or anything. I love it though. I guess I'm just used to my friends cars, Sara and her '00(i believe) Ford Mustang Cobra SVT, etc, etc. (I hate Ford by the way but that is a throw-you-back-in-the-seat fast car)
Any car can turn into a piece Kurt if you don't take care of it. Neon's are usually pretty reliable even the older crappier versions, no where near 'Toyota-reliable' but still...*shrugs* I wonder what the year, miles, etc are on her Neon.

I really like trucks, I wish I could have a Chevy Silverado SS or an SSR, but I'm only 18 so I obviously don't have the money.
Two things wrong with the trucks you desire:
1. Silverado SS: Don't get me wrong, this is a nice truck. However, the truck is billed as the high-po truck from Chevy, and the truck is getting trounced in acceleration and other performance. Its also 45 grand or so, and a RAM SRT is about that same price, has 500 horsepower, and can own the Silverado in anything. (Also inlucde the new Ford Lightning) I know you are a Chevy fan and I am a Ford fan, and I am not trying to cause anything. That is the truth though. Chevy needs (actually, has to) that new ZO6 motor for the C6 in there just to compete.
2. SSR: 50 grand, small interior, 0-60 in 8 seconds, and is just inadequate for everything. Its only for show, and nothing more. Its got that 5.3 liter V-8 with 300 HP, and weighs 5000 pounds. Not good for a truck like that. However, the truck is unique. That's the only unique thing about it.

And no it isn't only a Sedan. There's the SE(sedan), SXT, and the R/T versions. There's also the SRT-4 which bares some similar body structure to a Neon it isn't actually a grade. It's a whole different car.

My family has a Dodge Intrepid, forgot to mention it in the first post. It has a sleek design, but I'm not crazy for it. I'm more of an SUV or truck guy. But something bothers me about all these SUV/hummer commercials. They always show them going offroad and getting dirty, which I doubt any Hummer owner would want.
Sure, we take our SUV offroad because its just plain fun. It can handle it.

Few thing-
1.) I'm sure the new neons are nice, but i just dont like the way they look. The only neon I like is a silver SXT tooling around here sometimes, it has the most wicked exhaust note ever, i'd swear it had glassbacks if i didn't know better.
2.) @ BoyWonder-yeah, I used to think like you. V8=Good, foreign cars suck etc... Then I got a BWM. Go get yourself a 69 GTO judge and pull up next to me on a windy road. My little foriegn 180 hp sedan will spank, burn, crush and otherwise shred that american car every which way to sunday. This applys to new american cars also. That car will outhandle anything you can (realistically) throw at me.
But I do like the sound of V8s, and the torque. My idea (after college) is to buy a stroked, bored ford smallblock with aluminum heads, a nice big fat 750 holly and some wicked cams and throw that into my current car.
BMW handling, American power, total sweetness.

I thought so there may be other varients of the Neon. Here in Britain it's only a saloon (or sedan). I think thats why it doesn't sell very well here, we Britis for some reason tend to prefer hatchbacks and estates (or station-wagons). But I think the latest trend here is to have even a normal car as a 4x4, some ideas have worked and others haven't, of the latter the Rover StreetWise has not taken off since it's launch last year. I think problem is that fact it is a Rover 25 with more plastic bumpers and larger wheel arches and larger wheels to give it a taller appearence.
About car fuels in the US, do you have diesel engines? It's one thing that took some time to sell here in the UK, when they started to get more known here around the late '70's/early 1980's, they used to be noisy, clunky and very smokey, and in the past 5 or 6 years they are now fast, quiet and practically smoke free. My instructers car is a 2004 Vauxhall Corsa SXi 1.3 diesel model and it's more like a petrol, the engine is so quiet and it is fast. When I was about 5 or 6 which would be around '91, I used to go to school in a Vauxhal Astra MK2 1.6 and that was a diesel, and it was so noisy, it was like being in a tank.

I never was arguing for or against the Neon. I just said that I liked mine.
You said you heard they were hella fast, I replied, it's okay, not too terribly fast. Cute, peppy, but not hella fast.
The only time I said the new Neon's weren't pieces of crap in comparison to older versions, it was in response to Kurt, while I wondered what were the circumstances behind his sis's car falling apart.
It isn't all about speed you know, it's about quality, how much fun you have driving it, reliability, how well suited it is to you. Not price tag either.
Ha anyway, I didn't think this was meant to be a debate thread about cars. *shrugs*
Oh and I'd like to see pics of all of you with your cars. Cars are a thing of pride, I love mine, I'll put up a picture soon.

You got that right, it's not about the speed of the car, but the reliability and quality that makes a good car. Yesterday I read the Mirror newpaper and it say the most unreliable car is the Merc M-class 4x4 and there was quite a few Citroens, Puegeots and Renaults thrown in the list too. But on the tables of manufactures reliability Peugeot was right at the bottom. Of course without a doubt Lexus was at top of the table, it's amazing, becuase they haven't been in the UK long, Lexus first came here in 1990 and we weren't familiar with 'em, and we have relised they are one of the most reliable cars. Second place went to Skoda, they fisrt came here around 1964 with the 1000 (according to ukcar.com (http://www.ukcar.com/)) and people used to laugh and make jokes about them. But now they don't not since they've been owned by Volkswagen.
I wish I had the photo of my car, but unfortuatley I deleted the photo, and the copy on the computer was lost when we had a virus.
But I found some photos of one similar to mine, the only difference is the colour, this ones blue, mine was bright red. It's similar spec as mine, a rare 1.4 model, it's also an F-reg too (that means it's from 1988-9). It was a good motor. I may not be much but it was a good first car. This is a Cavalier MK3:

I like cars as well. ANd sometimes my parents and others asked me whatr do people say about this particular modal I tell the truth and I recommend some models as well. I'm pretty much a japanese car fan I really enjoy the Nissans, Hondas, etc. I did at the time liked the American cars but I was a little dissapointed on how these car companies changed so much and dropping some models in their line ups. One day I hoping that I will own a Honda or even a Toyota! :anime: :D

Since Japan drives on the same side of the road like we do in Britain, we get some Japanese imports, which are 10 years old and are given UK registration plates for the year they were new, and some of the models aren't sold here. Even if they are the same, like a Mitsubishi Shogan is sold here, in Japan it's called Pajero and the parts are different.
