Pixar's new movie The Incredibles blew away all the competition this weekend and did just what Pixar always does, churn the best quality animated movies that any one studio can. In it's opening weekend The Incredibles pulled in an estimated $70.6 million! If if estimates hold, it will beat Finding Nemo's opening by only $400,000. 'Nemo' opened with $70.2 million in June of 2003.
Coming in second place this weekend was Ray which is doing pretty well for itself. $13.8 million this weekend for a total of $39.8 million!
The Grudge is enjoying it's stay in the top 10 coming in third place with $13.5 million and a $89.5 million total! If anyone doesn't already know, The Grudge 2 has been given the go ahead.
Coming in fourth place was the other horror movie, Saw which brought in $11.4 million for a total of $35.7 million.
And rounding out the top 5 this weekend and debuting was Alfie, making only $6.5 million.
It's gonna be a clash of the CG movies next weekend as The Polar Express opens and will challenge the heavy weight The Incredibles. Polar Express opens this Wednesday for maximum box office take.
Also opening is Seed of Chucky. And then we have Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. And finally we have After the Sunset (another heist movie  ).
Here are your numbers...
1) The Incredibles- $70,678,000 ($70,678,000) NEW!
2) Ray- $13,800,000 ($39,800,000)
3) The Grudge- $13,500,000 ($89,580,000)
4) Saw- $11,400,000 ($35,701,242)

The Incredibles matched and barely surpass Finding Nemo's opening weekend gross. I wonder how it will do with the Polar Express as compitetion.

The Incredibles deserved this week's, and hopefully next week's, #1 spot.
I hate to say it, because I've been looking forward to it since 1998, but Seed of Chucky's going to bomb. Horribly. It'll be lucky to crack the top ten. Universal (Focus Features is their independent branch) picked the worst possible time to open a 'family themed' horror movie.

Good job, Pixar. Like we had any doubt. :)
It still didn't top Shrek 2's $108 Mill, though. I think that is the Incredibles' biggest competition in the animation field this year, both in terms of box office and prospective Academy Awards.

So, did Incredibles make that much because people were going to see the movie? Or were they going to see the Star Wars trailer?
Tobias

I'm assuming that a good percentage of those people were there to see the SW trailer. I know at least two people in the theater I went to was there solely for the Ep III trailer.

The Incredibles was awesome! Great to see it at #1.

I fully expected The Incredibles (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=125973) to up at the top and I don't expect it to stop very soon. I'm thinking that while The Polar Express will be popular it might have a more "kiddie" appeal than The Incredibles which might keep it off the must-see list of the little bit older crowd.
Too bad about Alfie which looked like it could be an alright movie. Nice to see the other one-named movie, Ray (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=125436) beat both The Grudge (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=124839) and Saw (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=125382) though.

Good job for Pixar, and a finally rasberry for Esiner.
So this is the last hurrah for Disney animation for some time isn`t it? What are they going to do next year with no 2D, 3D or any D animation to hand out?

Um No Disney still have Cars that is their last Pixar based film.

Good to see that The Incredibles was #1, I guess...I might be seeing it soon.
Too bad to see Ray doing average...I think that it should be making more then $40 million so far.

The Polar Express will at most finish at #3 next weekend (#2 would be a miracle). I saw it at a sneak preview yesterday. It was boring. The story was monotonous and drags painfully, the side adventure sequences are more exciting than the main storyline itself (which is about a boy riding a train to the North Pole to see Santa), and too many false climaxes. The Incredibles blows it out of the water in storyline, voiceover (Tom Hanks cannot carry the movie by himself, even when voicing 5 characters) and especially animation.

Finally, a deserving movie is number 1 at the BO. Great job, Pixar!

Wait, you're telling there are people who actually pay 6 to 10 dollars just to see a trailer? That's just ridiculous.

A trailer that's ONLINE, too!...
Wow, well I'm definitely not surprised by the Incredibles box office success. It looks like a good movie, and I can't wait to see it myself. Go Pixar! Also it's great to see Ray doing well, that looks like a great portrayal of Ray Charles, and Jamie Fox should get an award for it.. So good.
I haven't really been interested in the Grudge, so it baffles me how another one will be made so soon. I'm somewhat looking forward to After the Sunset, I think that will be a pretty good movie. It just seems like all of a sudden it's gotten movie heavy again. I don't know about Polar Express though, I hoped it would do well, but I didn't realize it was coming out so close to Incredibles.. We shall see.

Wait, you're telling there are people who actually pay 6 to 10 dollars just to see a trailer? That's just ridiculous.Everyone should know by now that Star Wars fans are some of the most obsessed people on planet earth. Six to ten dollars for the first moving footage of the new movie on the big screen is nothing to these guys.
Just saw the polar express at a sneak saturday. The visual animation is stunning and it's pretty much honest to the book(they added a glacier sequence though). I hope it makes good business.

And yes, people would pay for thetrailer. I don't know why since you could just watch it on AOL or some other site.

At least 20 kids in my theater got to have that "Wow, sh*t, fantastic!" experience I had on Thursday.

Not only that but I think knowing that the trailer is attached to the increadables might might be enough to inspire someone to go see the movie who were on fence about whether or not they wanted to see it. Like me for example The Increadables looks like a fun movie to me, but probally something I would usually wiat to rent. But knowing that the trailor is being shown with this film makes if more likely that I will go see it, even though I already saw the trailor on Access Hollywood. The same thing happened three years ago with Mounsters Inc. it looked like a fun movie, and it was, but I wouldn't have gone to see it in the theater if it wasn't for the AotC trailor being shown with it.
What really ticks me off is people paying to see just the trailer, and then promptly leaving after that. WTF is that about?! Not only is it a waste of money, but they're missing out on one of 2004's best films! D=
Anyways, I'm giving 'Polar Express' a chance. I might go see that the following weekend.
The real dark horse of November is Spongebob Squarepants. Whether THAT movie will do well or sink remains to be seen...

There was a book? I'm surprised so many people are saying this...
And here I thought 'The Polar Express' was a holiday classic that was both well known and well loved. Atleast all the people I know have heard of and probably own a copy of the book for themselves...
Chris Van Allsburg (who wrote and painted the pictures in the book) made a bunch of others. The man's my top childhood author, and his other books which include Wreck of the Zephyr, Jumanji, as well as a few others will forever remain lodged into my childhood memories.

Seriously even if your not a child I'd read some of Van Allsburg's work, most of them are really well written short stories with some great art.

I think Spongebob will probably be Nick's biggest theatrical hit since the second Rugrats movie, and will probably do better then the Wild Thornberries and Hey Arnold.
But I don't think it'll have the staying power to last against the Incredibles, especially if Disney Re releases it in a month or so with bloopers and extra scenes during the end credits.

It's so photorealistic, at times you can't whether your looking at a painting or not.

-TimYou are, of course, correct. Since it seems Oscars are awarded according to box office gross more than quality anymore, Shrek is still the leading candidate for Best Animated Picture. As much as I loved Shrek and wanted to love 2, it simply wasn't an exceptional movie :( The Incredibles blows it away on all fronts, imo.

D=I've heard of people doing this, although I didn't notice any when I saw it, and you are right, the saddest thing about this is that they are missing out on such a great movie. I remember when Meet Joe Black came out at #1, everyone was surprised, and then they all realized that it was all those SW Fans buing tickets just for the Episode I trailer... I'm still not sure if that was true or not, and I don't think that the Incredibles owes anything to having an Episode III trailer screening before it. So far I haven't heard any accounts of 50% of a theater getting up and leaving, most people say 2 or 3 at most, and since most theaters hold upwards of 200 seats nowadays, I'd say attributing 1% of it's total box office to Star Wars Fanboyism is generous...

I'm not a bookworm (anymore), so I'm not supposed to be aware that The Polar Express is based on a book.

I saw The Incredibles last night with my brother, but we got there a few minutes late. I totally forgot about the Episode III trailer. Oh well, I woulda closed my eyes anyway, as I hate spoilers. Anyway, we both loved the movie, which I hope I'll be able to say after I see Episode III...
