Question regarding VHS

Ok, I have been wondering this for a long time now. On most of my VHS tapes, if I rewind all the way to the beggining and turn up my TV really loud I can hear a phone being dialed. Does anyone here know why this happens?I always thought it was kidna werid.

does it really sound like a phone, or is it more like a series of beeps that go higher and higher in tone? if it's the second, i think that's a calibration tone for either smart VCRs with auto volume control, or something that's only used on the mass duplication end. anyone with older audio tapes have this same sound at the very beginning of the tape (i've got a tape from 1992 with this tone).

I've always wondered that, myself...Perhaps a technical flaw?

All my old Disney tapes did that. Perhas they look to see if the tape is working by hearing for this after they duplicate every tape.
