I've been using Windows XP Professional for about two years now and I have never had a problem before. However, just recently, if I do not use my computer for more than a few minutes, it goes back to the Windows Log On screen. It does not log me off, exactly; all I have to do to get back to Windows is click on the icon and then I'm back in and all my programs are still operational, but this has never happened before until just recently and I did not make any changes that should have brought on this change.

Does anyone else have this problem? Is there anything that can be done about it?

It happens sometimes I've never found a setting for it or what causes it. It might be an update something and it might eventually go away.

Yup, something of this kind has happened to me. My computer wouldn't let me log into my settings or whatever and so it keep restarting over and over again when it got to the log in screen. It sucked. I don't exactly remember how I fixed it though. Sorry... :(

Is your screensaver coming on and then booting you back? Or does it just randomly boot you back to the screen?

If the screensaver comes on first and then boots you:

Right click on desktop >> Properties >> Screen Saver

Uncheck the "On resume, display Welcome screen."

If it just randomly boots you back, then I don't have any idea what the cause of that would be. Maybe completely disable Fast-User Switching (Control Panel >> User Accounts. Under "Pick a task", select "Change the way users log on or off" and disable "Use Fast User Switching").
