I just saw this commercial by TimeLife advertizing a new wave of Beavis and Butt-head DVDs.

They said they're NEW!

They're not new! They've been available since last year! Even then, they were still advertizing the first wave of Beavis and Butt-head DVDs.

Darn TimeLife and their false advertizing, getting my hopes up for some more Beavis and Butt-head DVDs.

Judge said in an interview last year that "They put out a couple of DVD’s without telling me, which broke a contract with me, so we’re sorting that all out now." At that time, I thought he was referring to Time-Life, and then there was another interview this year in which Judge said it was MTV who released the DVDs in question, and that he had approved certain episodes for home video release (back before DVDs).

He also mentioned that the videos were edited -- said "they cut the word 'fire' out of all of them."

I'm wondering now how much of this involves Time-Life because there has been other word that Judge wanted to release a DVD collection with bonus materials.

I hate Time-Life anyway -- their prices are outrageous, and if you order just one thing from them, they bug the crap out of you via phone and junk mail trying to get you to buy more of their grossly overpriced DVDs. Any DVD fan who would would pay $25 plus S&H for 3 random episodes of a TV series (as Time-Life is offering "Fat Albert") has to be either uninformed, seriously obsessive-compulsive, or just outright stupid.

But anime DVDs aren't 3 random episodes, they are (usually) part of a continuing storyline.

True, and aren't most anime titles imports? I always assumed that's why retail price for most any anime title is at least $25 on the average -- $5-10 higher that most other individual DVD titles on the market.

Not the localized ones licensed by American dubbing companies like ADV and Viz. But simply the fact that they're foreign makes them more expensive, what with importing costs and the niche market. I've never bought an R2 anime DVD so I have no idea on their prices.

Back on topic, I'm glad I didn't buy an Time Life DVDs. First of all, it sucks that you HAVE to buy them online, and second they edit a lot of stuff, like the old Ren & Stimpy DVDs. Of course, Paramount made quite a few edits as well... but atleast you got more bang for your buck.

It's mainly because that, while anime is big, it's not nearly as big as American stuff, and if it doesn't get put in basic cable/broadcast, then the sales won't be as big. I think the only anime DVDs that could even compare to American shows are Dragonball Z, Pokémon, and Yu-Gi-Oh!, though maybe one of the Gundam series.

However, it is picking up steam, as many stores offer $10-$15 discounts when the DVD is released (and Best Buy almost always discounts them $10-$15 anyway), so most people don't buy anime DVDs for $25-$30 unless it's a Starter Set or a really awesome DVD.

The Time-Life B&B DVD's didn't really have any objectionable material to cut out, so aside from missing music videos, everything is there.

Besides, the Time-Life DVD's were nothing but previously released material that was already on VHS.

I know of some things that were cut out or edited.

In one episode where they're hired to do work around Mr. Anderson's house, they started sniffing paint thinner, and there was a caption that says it can cause brain damage, and to look what it has done to Beavis and Butt-head. That was one thing that was cut out.

The Halloween and Christmas episodes were also edited too. In Beavis' version of the Christmas episode, there's a scene where he walks into his house and he's uttering the tune of "Jingle Bells". He was originally uttering the tune of "Winter Wonderland". Then there was also that part where they read letters that people have sent in to Santa Butt-head. Not all of the letters made it to the DVD version.
