This is a project I'd like to try. I have a small thing for languages, and I really like Tamaranian. For now, it'd just be nice to collect a phrase book, so if you know any Tamaranian phrases (especially their meanings) then post them here. I'll post what I can think of now.

Clorbag Valblernek - a person who pulls mean pranks on others
Blothog - a celebration of friendship
Gorka pipe - a native Tamaranian instrument, similar to Scottish bagpipes, large and pink, plays very disonnant notes very loudly.

Other words or phrases I'm not sure of -
Finbar
Glembork
Zallwort Doobaflixing Zarfarger

Anyone who can correct my spelling or offer new words or meanings, please post. If you all think this is stupid, that's fine. I'll just sit in my little corner :( with my pile of books until you get over it.

And this is totally related to fan fic writing, because people can look here for a refrence when writing for Starfire or Blackfire or Sunfire or Bonfire or whoever.

Ps. Bonfire doesn't exist, to my knowlege.

I'll be honest with you-the show's creators didn't write out a language for this show. There's no way they invested the time needed, they just wing it and try to create words that sound kinda funny, with lots of protraced vowel sounds followed by a consonant.

wusserloop is a good example. extended u and o.
to that end-since there is no basis for the language, new words are fair game, as my guess is just as valid as theirs as to what tamarnian words are. So I'll post my created Tamarnian words and what they mean. (also clorbag and blorthog have the drawn out o sound.)

Gend'an-someone who means more to you than words can express; a true love. Someone who you could see youself spending your life with.
Aach-cha - the band on starfire's upper arm. traditionally worn by tamaranian upper class and nobility. When a corresponding band is given to another tamaranian, it symbolizes they are gend'ans

this is a great idea, it would help people writing their fics. But since Tamaranian is a make-it-up-as-you-go language, I think everyone should post their words here.
(I'm trying to learn Japanese. ITS HARD!)

I was aware that Tamaranian doens't really exist as a full language. That's why I used the term "Phrase Book" and not dictionary in my post (true the title of the thread says dictionary). I assumed that we could put in all the stuff we use in our fics, just so there can be some unity between stories. I'm glad there are so many other people who like languages here. I sadly only can speak English, but I'm learnign French and dabble in Japanese and Galelic (sp?). Tolkien also has some nice stuff...:D

OK, cool. When you said know any Tamaranian phrases, I thought you meant like know from the show. Yeah, a comprehensive dictionary would be an awesome idea.

Gaelic? Really, gaelic is the least intuitive language on the planet. I have an Irish Mythology class and we speak some Gaelic. Are you learning to speak it or write it? 'Cause they're totally different.

Cuchulainn is pronounced Coohoolan.
Ridiculous.

i speak english, *duh, but still, go me!* very little Italian/Greek/Roman/German (only a phrase or two cos i really suck at languages) some Arabic from my childhood, Gaelic and i'm still learning French.
Cuchulainn is really pronounced as "Coo-cull-an" - unless thats what u said, cos i'm nearly certain that your phoenetics differ a lot from mine. *if that makes any sense at all to anyone but me:sweat: *
(sorry if this is unessicerly bi***y) Surely if your learning to speak Gaelic, you'll need the writing also? they're really not that different, besides the pronouncation, but all languages are like that. i think...?
finally, correct me if i'm wrong cos i haven't seen the episode with Mad Mod in a long time, this is just what i think i can remember:
"How many ocarans does it take to hoogie a morphlar?.... Finbar!!!:D *Star to BB*
i know its not much help other than to state the obvious, but its probably like one of those... How many blondes does it take to screw in a lightbulb...? 50!
**yes, bad joke with no point and possibility to offend many, i know, but its not mine and i only used it for an example.now if u want a real blonde joke... jk;)

here's a tamaranian phrase i invented for my story, vanishing act (when star is with robin)

what's interesting is when one of your teachers gives you...interesting phrases...and then puts them on homework and tests.

ve te a carajo :>: go to hell (vay tay ah kah-rah-ho)
cirerre la ventana maldita :>: shut the damn window (see-air-ay la ven-tah-nah mall-dee-tah)
hijo de punta :>: son of a B**** (ee-ho day poon-tah)

:^:Spanish

:v:Tamaranian

glorblar :>: a very large native tamaranian creature
(used in my story Spurned Past, Tentative Future)

“How do you feel?” Starfire asked him.

He groaned and responded “Tired, and I’m in pain all over. It feels like I was hit by a truck.”

“But how could you have been hit by a truck if you were asleep this whole time?” Starfire pondered aloud.

“He was comparing the beating he took to being hit by a truck.” Cyborg said.

“Oh, I think I understand. Like if a glorblar fell on you.”

“Umm, yeah.” Phantom looked around the room to make sure he wasn’t the only one who was clueless to her meaning.

atsthay yaboutyay yityay orfay ownay

eesay ouyay aterlay!I can't recall the name, but in the first episode of season four Starfire compares Control Freak's power to someone "the Overseer" who I would assume is some sort of God in Tamaranian religion.

Zall (or zaul or however it would be spelt) was not only used by Starfire in expressing relief for Robin coming to her ("Thank zaul you--"), but also as a greeting from Galfore. ("Zaul.") My guess is it would mean something more along the lines of "goodness" or, when used alone, "good to you".

Kregor8
02-17-2005, 10:12 PM

Yeah, that's right. Xhäl. To get the dots, hold down Alt and type 132 on the num pad. When you let go of alt, it places ä. There are a whole other ton of combinations (Alt+0194=Â, Alt+130=é, etc. Any syboll can be gotten with the alt+numpad). But you have to use the numpad, it doesn't work using the numbers above the letters.
