Just curious as to which of us were "early adopters" of the DVD format - back when releases had fullscreen on one side and widescreen on the other, and the best bonus features were production notes. What drew u to the format? The video quality? The better price range compared to laserdisc? The mass avaliability of widescreen?

Well, I bought my original Toshiba back in 1999 when they still cost over a hundred bucks. So yeah, I'm a fairly early convert. My reason: WIDESCREEN! (duh)

I was an early adopter as well. We bought are first DVD in 1999. It was U.S. MARSHALS. Got it the day it came out, and it sat on the shelf for about three months until we bought a DVD player. I've got some of those crummy early WB DVDs where they just had a generic WB menu and the Chapter Selection was every third chapter. Not really sure why we started buy them. Possibly because of the wide availability of widescreen, which I had started to really get into the previous couple of years, and probably also because of the superior audio/visual presentation. We never had LaserDiscs. We went straight from VHS to DVD. (Or if you want to get technical, we actually went from VideoDisc to VHS to DVD, but I'm sure post people nowadays don't even remember VideoDiscs. :D )

What drew u to the format? The single reason I was most drawn to Dvd was Anime. Remember the days when you had to choose between getting the Dub VHS or the Sub? Dvd was like the holy grail for me.
I'm pretty sure the first dvd I bought was around Thanksgiving of '99 and I got my first dvd player (OritronDVD-100 as displayed in this post (http://forums.toonzone.net/showpost.php?p=776797&postcount=29)) for Christmas that same year. The dvds I got that November were Heat and Full Metal Jacket on sale at Office Depot for like $7 or $8 each, which at the time was insanely low (still a good deal) and even though I didn't have a dvd player, I knew I'd get one soon.

I built me a new computer in '99 and slapped me a DVD-Rom in there, then ran out and bought "So I Married an Axe Murderer". :D

Looks like I forgot the part about my first dvd. That was Vertigo. I did rent some stuff before then such as The Matrix, The Haunting, and 2001.
