View Full Version : How do you organize your collection?

If this topic has been raised before, forgive me. I didn't see it anywhere.

I'm always curious how people organize their collections, because some do it in different (and strange) ways. For instance, a friend of mine organizes his alphabetical by studio, then alphabetical by title. That would drive me crazy!! Some break up them into categories, like Action, Horror, Comedy, etc.

Personally, the majority of my collection is alphabetical by movie title. But at the end of the collection, I have smaller sections for favorite actors, directors, etc., to keep their movies grouped together, alphabetical by the person's name. After that comes my collection of comedy DVDs, then music DVDs (like music videos, concerts, etc.), and then any miscellaneous DVDs that don't really fit into the others. Then all of my TV-shows-on-DVD I keep completely separate. Film box sets I've also been keeping separate for now, but I may put them in with the others eventually.

So how do you guys (and girls) do it? :)

All my animated stuff gets organized separately from my live-action stuff. Then, for both groups, all the box sets are placed together and all the movies, single volumes etc get put together. Beyond that, it's fairly free-form... aka, wherever there's room.

I try to keep foreign films and anime seperate along with TV Shows.

My method is quite simple. I place all animation DVDs in one stack and all live action DVDs in another stack. Although, in terms of multiple volumes and sequels, I keep them right next to the other.

Movies/disc belonging to the same series are kept together, then it goes by studio in no particular order, with two exceptions:

-The T2: Ultimate Edition must be placed at the end of the shelf, as the metal case scratches other dvd cases placed next to it.

-All snappers go together.

I used to organize them by film and TV, now I just do it alphabetically.

I organize them alphabetically and by height from tallest to shortest. For example, anime boxed sets go first, then TV season boxed sets, then slip cases, then snapper cases, and finally standard keep cases.

I have a whole bookshelf for books, DVD's, Manga, Comics and Video games, the fourth shelf is were my DVD's are

From the right to left I have my Anime/Manga collection, Starting of with anime books, then Manga then My anime DVD's My Anime DVD collection is part of my overall 'Animated Action' Secton, which has my anime DVD's and at the end, my one american action animation (Mega Man season 1). After that I have my cartoons spilt into my 'cartoon cartoons' and my cartoons, then after that I have my two live action DVD's (spaceballs and Asterix). I hope to put all my comedy DVD's on a different bookshelf because I like my current bookshelf to be just for my action nerdy stuff!

I group movie and TV series together. Other than that I put on top of the pile the titles I'm most likely to watch again soon.

Organization? What is this organization you speak of? :p

Meh, I usually just seperate live action from animated, and keep volumes in a series together. But since I have more DVDs than my rack can hold, they end up in a pile anyway.

I organize by genre. I find it easier to decide on what to watch, if I've already assessed that I'm in the mood for a musical, or something animated, to be able to quickly scan through my options under that genre.

My top shelf belongs to Disney DVD's. The films are arranged according to year of release, followed by the Toy Story box set, and then the few Disney Treasures DVD's I own (all out of their metal cases.)

The next shelf is devoted to my DCU/Marvel Universe movies. I arrange the live action movies according to year of release, and then I have the animated box sets, and then the single-disc animated DVD's are arranged according to how I perceive the animated continuity; Fleischer Superman, Mask of the Phantasm, Last Son of Krypton, Sub-Zero, World's Finest, Justice League DVD's, Mystery of the Batwoman, and the Batman Beyond DVD's.

The remaining shelves are my movies and TV shows, lined-up alphabetically by title.

Simple. Alphabetically by title.

Same here, with the exception that sequels go in chronological order (for example, LotR: Return of the King would go before Two Towers in alpha order, but it goes after because that just plain makes more sense and looks better).
Of course, I can be weird when it comes to alpha order-- for example, although it was released in this country as Open Your Eyes, I alpha it under A for the original Spanish title, Abre Los Ojos. And although it was released here as simply Escaflowne, it goes under V for Vision of Escaflowne, the original title.
Yes, I'm just that anal. (-:

Chalk me up as another 'alphabetical, by title'.

I keep my DVDs on my shelf by the order in which I got them.

I used to keep all my Boxsets together, but not anymore, as I have too many. :P

Nowadays I just keep the DVDs together by series, with TV shows going first, then any movies based off said TV shows. Other than that, it's all random.

Completely random.

I could put my Star Wars DVDs right next to Dragonball Z, and there's absolutely no order whatsoever.
