View Full Version : October 19th, 2004 -- what did you get this week?

It could be an expensive week this time around.

There are several notable animated releases, including another small collection of episodes from Batman - The Animated Series, Bionicle 2: Metru Nui, Justice League: Brave and the Bold, the second season of Spongebob Squarepants, Superman - The Animated Series: A Little Piece of Home, a Tom and Jerry two-disc collection, and the complete Wacky Races.

The most prominent recent theatrical releases this week are A Cinderella Story, Garfield: The Movie, and Van Helsing. So, 0 for 3. Other miscellaneous movies to have made their way through theaters in the past year or two are Colin Ferrell's Intermission and Love Me If You Dare.

This week's re-releases include a director's cut of Hellboy (available as a 3-disc set or as part of a gift set package) as well as new versions of Born on the Fourth of July and Species.

Leaping from TV to DVD are the first season of Arrested Development, the complete Greg the Bunny and Eden, the fifth season of Xena: Warrior Princess, the seventh season of Stargate SG-1, and a followup volume of SCTV Network '90. There's also a Pee-Wee's Playhouse Christmas special and a DVD of The Man Show called "Girls on Trampolines". A few TV movies are being released, including a new version of Helter Skelter, Harry for the Holidays, and Michael Crichton's Pursuit.

Criterion is adding Eyes Without a Face, Fat Girl, and Secret Honor to their collection. The catalog title I find most exciting this week is the long-delayed release of Tim Burton's Ed Wood. It's also nice to see the variety of Godzilla collections, including several entries from the '70s and optional Japanese audio, Godzilla vs. Gigan, Godzilla vs. Hedorah, and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. This week's catalog titles cross quite a few decades, from the '30s (Garden of Allah, Intermezzo, Made For Each Other, The Young in Heart) to the '40s (Portrait of Jenny, Since You Went Away) to the '50s (Alexander the Great, Conquest of Space, Ruby Gentry), '60s (They Shoot Horses, Don't They?), '70s (Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs), and the '80s (D.A.R.Y.L., Explorers). More recent films include Fire in the Sky, The Hole, A Slipping Down Life, and To be and To Have.

Cashing in further on the release of Van Helsing, Universal's adding Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Invisible Man, and The Mummy to their Legacy Collection. Another appearance of a classic movie monster is featured in the 1979 take on Dracula. There's also a collection of Oliver Stone movies, featuring Salvador, Platoon, Wall Street, Talk Radio, Born on the Fourth of July, JFK (director's cut), The Doors, Heaven and Earth, Natural Born Killers, Nixon, U-Turn, and, his fingers giving way, the director's cut of Any Given Sunday.

I've written reviews for a few of this week's releases -- Explorers (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=12660), Fire in the Sky (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=12673), and Garfield: The Movie (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=12750).

For a list of some of the best prices as well as the latest price drops for existing titles, check Mike Frezon's weekly thread on the Home Theater Forum (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=214354) and SalesCircular.com (http://www.salescircular.com/). A relatively comprehensive list of this week's releases can be found at DVD Talk (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/bargain.php) and ComingSoon.net (http://www.comingsoon.net/dvd/).

So -- what are you getting this week? Since I've finally waded through most of my backlog (still have some Gamera to go), I'm going to pick up Ed Wood and probably one of the Hellboy sets.

There doesn't seem to be much quality in terms of theatrical releases this week. I guess I'll just stick with the animated DC Universe. I plan to pick up Batman: Scerets of the Caped Crsauder, Superman: A Little Piece of Home, and Justice League: Brave and the Bold. I don't see much else that interests me here.

Only had a enough money this week for one DVD, Hellboy Director's Cut which I've already watched. Great movie! It's too bad this version wasn't the one seen in theaters.

Despite me thinking it was a terrible movie, my girlfriend really wants me to pick up Van Helsing for her as she thought it was a "kick ass movie." I have to smirk when she says that. Luckily I get to wait to waste my money on that until Christmas.

Got Van Helsing (one of the coolest movies of the year). I only bought the regular edition though since I already own F/D/W on the LC.

I'm getting Hellboy DC for Xmas.

Haven't seen Brave and the Bold yet though.

Stargate SG-1 Season 7

How can you guys like Van Hellsing? It was easily one of the worst films I have seen all year, but I guess we all have differnt opinions on what is good and what sucks.

I thought VAN HELSING was just awesome, my favorite movie of the year! I like the fact the movie actually had a reason for pairing the three monsters together, whereas any other director would have thrown them together just because they could and made it a standard "Monster Battle" flick. I found the story and characters intriguing, and the action scenes kicked ass. I wish I could have just bought the regular edition, because I also already have the original FRANKENSTEIN/DRACULA/WOLF-MAN movies, but I wanted the second disc of extras.

Star Trek: Generations Special Collector's Edition, one of the best Trek film special edition discs. Mainly due to Ronal D. Moore's and Brannon Braga's great commentary.

I don't know, but I did. Well let's see, it had great music, great action, cool monsters, Kate Beckinsale, etc.

Sure, the acting wasn't the best, especially for Dracula, but if you can stand Hayden in AotC, you should have no problem here since it was no where near as bad. And I wasn't expecting much of a plot out of this movie, which is another reason I liked it so much.

How can you guys like Van Hellsing?Yeah, I liked it too, but I did think it was a little too long. I think the trick is to have low expectations

Anyway, I picked up some stuff I've been wanting for awhile this week: Raw, Young Adam, Shaolin Soccer, Baadasssss and one new release, Spongebob Squarepants Season 2.

I don't know if it's national, but my local Hastings had Spongebob S2 listed in it's Sunday advert for $19.99. It rang up at $39.99, but I just showed him the ad and they sold it to me for that. Seems like a misprint to me, since everywhere else has it for over $35... but then again, I thought Targets ad for the new Special Edition of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly for $7.50 was a misprint too, but it wasn't! A couple good deals this week.

I bought The Invisible Man: Legacy Collection. I got it at Best Buy because the LCs were supposed to be a little cheaper there. I had trouble finding it and the salesperson said that people were going nuts over those movies when they were released the previous day. They never even got The Creature from the Black Lagoon, but they seem to have sold out of The Mummy and they only had a few of The Invisible Man left.

As for Van Helsing, I think I'm going to rent that one. It was a fun little monster mash, but I don't see much point in owning it. It was fun and it did have a little more plot than I expected. The vampires had a tendency of overacting, though. I also wasn't crazy about the Velkan Valerious version of the Wolf Man. He's just not as interesting a character as Larry Talbot. Big points for their version of Frankenstein's Monster. I was especially surprised by how articulate and intelligent he was (what a surprisingly "literary" approach to the character).

I thought the new LCs came out next week? I'll have to see if I can afford any of them this weekend.

Question, are there any special store exclusive ones again like the F/W/D ones did for Van Helsing?

This week I picked up The Naked Gun ($5!!), Arrested Development: Season One, and Hellboy: The Director's Cut. It's disappointing to see crap like Van Helsing and Garfield get huge standees while great stuff like Hellboy and Arrested Development is pushed off to the side. At least there should be plenty of copies of the new Dawn of the Dead (not as good as the original but cool) next week in time for Hallowe'en.
