It could be an expensive week this time around.
There are several notable animated releases, including another small collection of episodes from Batman - The Animated Series, Bionicle 2: Metru Nui, Justice League: Brave and the Bold, the second season of Spongebob Squarepants, Superman - The Animated Series: A Little Piece of Home, a Tom and Jerry two-disc collection, and the complete Wacky Races.
The most prominent recent theatrical releases this week are A Cinderella Story, Garfield: The Movie, and Van Helsing. So, 0 for 3. Other miscellaneous movies to have made their way through theaters in the past year or two are Colin Ferrell's Intermission and Love Me If You Dare.
This week's re-releases include a director's cut of Hellboy (available as a 3-disc set or as part of a gift set package) as well as new versions of Born on the Fourth of July and Species.
Leaping from TV to DVD are the first season of Arrested Development, the complete Greg the Bunny and Eden, the fifth season of Xena: Warrior Princess, the seventh season of Stargate SG-1, and a followup volume of SCTV Network '90. There's also a Pee-Wee's Playhouse Christmas special and a DVD of The Man Show called "Girls on Trampolines". A few TV movies are being released, including a new version of Helter Skelter, Harry for the Holidays, and Michael Crichton's Pursuit.
Criterion is adding Eyes Without a Face, Fat Girl, and Secret Honor to their collection. The catalog title I find most exciting this week is the long-delayed release of Tim Burton's Ed Wood. It's also nice to see the variety of Godzilla collections, including several entries from the '70s and optional Japanese audio, Godzilla vs. Gigan, Godzilla vs. Hedorah, and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. This week's catalog titles cross quite a few decades, from the '30s (Garden of Allah, Intermezzo, Made For Each Other, The Young in Heart) to the '40s (Portrait of Jenny, Since You Went Away) to the '50s (Alexander the Great, Conquest of Space, Ruby Gentry), '60s (They Shoot Horses, Don't They?), '70s (Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs), and the '80s (D.A.R.Y.L., Explorers). More recent films include Fire in the Sky, The Hole, A Slipping Down Life, and To be and To Have.
Cashing in further on the release of Van Helsing, Universal's adding Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Invisible Man, and The Mummy to their Legacy Collection. Another appearance of a classic movie monster is featured in the 1979 take on Dracula. There's also a collection of Oliver Stone movies, featuring Salvador, Platoon, Wall Street, Talk Radio, Born on the Fourth of July, JFK (director's cut), The Doors, Heaven and Earth, Natural Born Killers, Nixon, U-Turn, and, his fingers giving way, the director's cut of Any Given Sunday.
I've written reviews for a few of this week's releases -- Explorers (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=12660), Fire in the Sky (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=12673), and Garfield: The Movie (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=12750).
For a list of some of the best prices as well as the latest price drops for existing titles, check Mike Frezon's weekly thread on the Home Theater Forum (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=214354) and SalesCircular.com (http://www.salescircular.com/). A relatively comprehensive list of this week's releases can be found at DVD Talk (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/bargain.php) and ComingSoon.net (http://www.comingsoon.net/dvd/).
So -- what are you getting this week? Since I've finally waded through most of my backlog (still have some Gamera to go), I'm going to pick up Ed Wood and probably one of the Hellboy sets.
