Cartoon Network brings over another great action cartoon from KidsWB, Static Shock. Virgil Hawkins gains amazing super electromagnetic powers after being exposed to a mutagenetic gas. Voiced by Phil LaMarr (Samurai Jack). Join us this week as we discuss and explore the series. Its Saturday morning...after hours. Thanks for TVtome.com for episode descriptions.
Monday - 9/27
"Shock to the System"
Virgil Hawkins is a smart, funny teen that gets beat up by gang leader Francis, who calls himself "F-Stop." The other gang leader protects him a couple of times, but says he can't be there all the time for him. He wants Virgil to join his gang.
Tuesday - 9/28
"Aftershock"
Meta humans are everywhere and most of them are doing crimes. Virgil begins to fight crime as Static, but when the bully "F-Stop" comes back as a meta human himself, able to control fire, Virgil tries to beat him once and for all.
Wednesday - 9/29
"The Breed"
Asked to tutor a track star, Virgil discovers that he is another "Bang Baby", who mutates into a 7-foot bruiser and has been recruited into a criminal gang run by a shadowy mutant named Ebon.
Thursday - 9/30
"Grounded"
While fighting Carmen Dillo, Static encounters a large amoeba with a taste for meat, mainly people. Static shocks it and gets a piece of it for study. He and Richie go into school after hours to study it, and run into Frieda and her friends who want to write a protest about lack of funding for the school newspaper.

I had forgotten how bad the first season intro was  makes you really appreciate the later ones. this was great opening episode and origin story :) loved Virgil's Black Vulcan costume choice lol and yuck at the ending with those guys like falling apart  the heroes always get off lucky when gaining superpowers huh?

It's interesting to watch these earlier episodes because of how much more low-budget they look. The character animation wasn't too bad though.

I dig it, though I didn't get why no one could tell it was Virgil when he had his costume on. He didn't even pull his goggles down.

I thought that the first episode was pretty good. First time I'd ever seen Static Shock.

Ah memories... I forgot how Virgil got caught up in a group that was part of the "big bang".
That animation is seriously less detailed... I forgot that too.
Nice to see Static on weekdays on CN. Just wish it was earlier. But I suppose it's no worse than Jackie Chan Adventures for a pre-AS slot.

While I'm glad that Jackie Chan Adventures is no longer in that time slot (soooo not my favorite 'toon!), I can't help but think Static Shock belongs on Miguzi or Toonami (the Teen Titans are due for a little break now, too).
And that pre-AS time slot should be given back to its rightful owner...Samurai Jack!

I always thought the first episode was really good. It does a very nice job of introducing a lot of key elements which are used later in the series. I like the softer style of the first two seasons, even though Season 3 and 4 definitely had better animation. Looking forward to "Sons of the Fathers" next week.
I thought the first 2 episodes were terrible. I remember looking forward to this show and just being completely put off by these. I probably should've gave the show a better chance, but to be honest, are these were both 1* episodes, and the main character irritated the hell out of me. He was trying far too hard to be cool, and his voice, despite it being Phil Lamarr, had me praying for a temporary case of deafness.
Yeah, when I make up words, I know I've been talking too long :p
Yeah, it takes a few episodes for the series to get really good.

and there's Alva! I wouldn't mind him showing up on JLU in some way oh and that last battle with Static and Hotstreak had some nice moves and animation! Static did pretty good on his first infiltration mission and first battles against a fellow bang baby so it all made for a good episode

On Tuesday's episode, did anyone notice that F-stop's character design had that really strange thing with the boxers showing. It was as if his pants were hula-hooped exposing his underwear. What the heck is that? Anyway, the battle seemed very X-men-ish, didn't it? Can't wait to see more.

yeah he had some real baggy pants. but isn't that neat? even early on the show pays attention to deal even if its a weird detail

Good second episode, and you can tell they are trying to really get Static in it, with him using tons of differnent powers in this one episode.
I've always liked how Virgil uses his powers (i.e. he does more than throw electric shocks all the time like some other production crews would've done), and this was no exception. Kinda weird that nobody noticed that Richie was always talking to Static though.

see what did I tell you about later intros only 3 episodes in and already a new and better one in the video and music departments :) Ebon has really cool powers for a badguy and all. also isn't it great how they show Virgil is a decently smart person himself?

The opening animation is better, but the song isnt, it doesnt have "I put a shock to ya system" and the right after that, "Static Shock" in it. That the only bad parts.

Raven versus Ebon would be a nice fight to see...

I've never seen this show until this week. And right now possibly the only things I can appreciate about this show are the script dynamics and the animation. The "hip"'d dialogue just makes me churn. Good to hear the animation gets better. I sure hope the coloring gets better in this show. Right now it's all too saturated for the style of it. I like how they showed the mutations in this show, instead of the corny shadow morph and someone screams type thing that's featured in tons of sci-fi shows.

I wish I had seen this thread sooner. My WB affiliate is so messed up that most of the episodes (of this and so many other shows) were unwatchable. I just have one question. Does anybody know if they are running the entire series?

*zips in*
I believe that they are. They better. I WANT to see, "A League Of Their Own!!! Part 1 and 2 and if CN removes STatic BEFORE this airs, I"m going to Dwayne's house and make him let me borrow the tape:D

Static Shock: Saturday Morning's most overlooked series.
I love this show. And the rubbery animation of the first season makes me giggle.:anime:

The animation is this episode was good, but COMPLETLEY different than the others. But, overall, I sure do hope they show the whole series.

They probably will eventually, but I'm willing to bet they'll only show Seasons 1 & 2 for now and save Season 3 & 4 for 2005, especially if ratings are good.
Yes, this series is really overlooked. Such goodness gone to waste...tsk, tsk.

I'm a latecomer to this thread, and I just saw "Shock to the System" this morning (the show is also airing on Sundays now at 8 a.m.), tuning in at the gang fight scene that sets the series in motion (Virgil getting his powers, how that mutant gang came to be, etc.)
Nice to know someone else besides me got the Black Vulcan in-joke as well.
The animation isn't bad, but it's no JL or JLU. And I think this 'toon will thrive in its Sunday morning slot. Let's keep it here, and give the 10:30 p.m. slot to some other deserving show.
BTW, how is Static Shock doing in the nightly ratings, anyway?
