Wow. Not two minutes ago, I ran downstairs to grab a drink, and thought of starting a thread about this very thing.
I, being the bane of fashion trendsetters, and completely secure in who I am as a person, have never followed fashion rules and trends. But I'm happy for the less confident girls & women feeling they have to reveal so much of themselves in order to be fashionable and accepted.
JohnCrichton

I LOVE women with class, intelligence, humor, wit.. those are the kind I keep as friends or loved ones.
But that doesn't mean I don't want them to drive me crazy with visual splendor.
Then there are just the women who walk buy or you see in a bar.. it is infact enjoyable seeing the creativity used to enhance the female form... not hide it.
Women should first and foremost always be comfortable, no doubt about that, but well... some of the women I've seen out and about in "slutwear" seem very comfortable.
I dunno... yes, in the right time and place one should dress conservative on both the male and female side. But when you're out and about on leisure time, then I like to see the fashion show.

Can I say slut here? You guys are pushing the limits of Toonzone by saying, slutwear you know? :p Anyways! I think girls that want attention will continue to dress in ways that say, "Look at me!"
Trends are trends and sure they will influence people but you know the world in which we live in guys love skin and the more the better. So there will be people who will follow the new styles but I really do not think you have anything to fear boys. :p There will always be slutwear! lol...
I personally do not know if I dress like a slut or not. I just dress how I want to because I think it looks cute. It's all attitude and personality.
Who do most young girls look up to, Britney Spears or Martha Stewart? :p
*Sigh.*
And like who do boys like more, Britney or Martha?
Like I said there is like a direct attention between girls who want attention and the boys who give it to them so like if the boy isn't into this new look then it's not going to sell.
But like we need change and we need new elements to infleunce styles so we are not stuck with the same old same old. Like the so called slutwear needs something to barrow from and improve on. :)
What's it matter how much clothing you have on? I think I can be sexy with or without clothing and I am comfortable saying that. :) It's not really your outfit that makes you sexy. It's your attitude and your style. It's like me saying, "I know I'm hot, so what's your point?" :)

Who do most young girls look up to, Britney Spears or Martha Stewart? :p I think a lot of young girls look up to a Martha Stewart type more than some pre-fab pop culture type. Who do they emulate? That's a different question.

Those are just generalizations and two ends of a spectrum. One end more women seem to gravitate toward more than the other.I understand, but I think they're pretty messed-up generalizations that aren't really fair to anybody.
I'm sorry to get personal about this, but I'm of the opinion (and have been for a while) that we're in a vastly oversexed culture. A lot of the "slutwear" (and I will note that I'm not terribly fond of that term) is being worn by progressively younger girls, and it concerns me that sexuality is foisted upon people entirely too early these days.
It's one thing when it's choice. People have the right to dress how they want, so it's no big deal. That's fine. But when people feel obligated to dress a certain way because of societal pressures, that can be problematic.
JohnCrichton
09-15-2004, 10:41 PM
I'll agree with you there 100%.
I don't want any women feeling obligated to wear anything they don't want to. I'm just saying those who do choose to wear "slutwear"(sorry, it's the best description and for me, in this case, it's not meant to be demeaning or insulting in anyway... even the strongest girl on the planet, Buffy, admits to like wearing slutty clothes to parties), I don't want to see the girls who did choose to wear slutwear and who're comfortable with it hearing the fashion trend has now changed to dressing up like an Eskimo or anything.
Also, as for the little girls wearing these clothes I'm completely and utterly against it, to the point where I'm wondering why in the motherlovin' hell companies would make mini-skirts for girls that young in the first place.
Youko Recca
09-15-2004, 10:44 PM
Well since males are gonna visualize about Pulling girls anyway, what they wear won't matter in the long run. What's really good is when a girl dresses classy and fumes sexiness at the same time....like...no cleavage needed, but still attractive in the right ways.

Well, it's just another cycle and I'm sure it will be more revealing next time around. But in the meantime: Great, I say! There are some girls at work who wear shirts showing their midriffs, because that's The Thing To Do, and half of them look a little pregnant, 'cause they also happen to eat lots of fast food and lead sedentary lives. More importantly, it's against the dress code! hello!!![end this part of rant]
Lesson learned: If you wanna dress like a *what?*, you gotta eat like a supermodel. ;)
Anyway, I totally believe in caring about one's appearance, but I personally don't think anyone has to be seductive in order to look good (there used to be a difference, btw). Of course, some boys may always disagree with that, but ... too bad *shrugs*. If it goes out of style, they might have to wait for a few years, surviving on models in the meantime.
But if it stops or delays the trend cited here, no one can complain:
...the "slutwear" look creeping into the children's market and young girls trying to copy the revealing, belly-baring looks of pop stars such as Spears. What, a society in which we don't encourage little kids to be sexy? What is this, the 40s? ... [mostly end whole rant]
It won't affect how I dress, as one could probably guess from this post, but it might cause me fewer fits of rage when I'm shopping if it spreads to my city (in eastern Canada). The only affordable clothes are currently hip-hugging might-as-well-be-spandex jeans with/without stupid flared legs, and midriff-showing almost-tops. And old-lady clothes.
Just gimme more sharp and classy business/casual/non-spandex-sportswear and I'll be happy :D
Though, honestly, again, I doubt much will change overall. :p
: yeah, and what randomguy said.
JC: If you "love" those women who show it all off, don't worry; they won't go away. But, those who don't really feel like dressing like that might not anymore if it's no longer sold as the only way for women to get attention ;) Though, this new trend is supposedly supposed to be sexy, but in a different way? Not sure I care exactly what that means... *shrugs, again*

Said it once and I'll say it again. Women should be comfortable and love themselves for who they are and not try and be anybody else. I just don't wanna see the skippy look disappear. That would break this old man's heart.

Yeah me too apparently. Hell, as far as I can tell runway models have always sported pretty risque fashions. But then again more then half the stuff they wear wouldnt look appealing on real women because its so out there.
Anyway, while some of the so-called "slutwear" is nice eyecandy, I have always found the woman beneath the clothing and her attitude/composure is where her sexiness originates.
And besides, I'm sure this fashion industry decision won't have any effect on the quality of my Maxim or FHM subscriptions. :)

The only thing this really affects is those within the fashion industry. The fashion industry has trends that live and die before the general public is even aware of them. Fashion industry insiders declaring the death of a trend doesn't mean the public will immediately follow. The fashion industry is pretty much an entity unto itself, and what they declare as in or out really only affects those who live and die by the fashion news in Vogue.
Girls in bars aren't going to start wearing sweaters and ankle-length skirts. They'll dress as they've been dressing for years. A few years from now, we may see more modest clothes become "all the rage" but that's not going to happen all of a sudden just because John Q. Designer has declared the end of trashy clothing.
Frankly, I wouldn't mind seeing more modest clothing become fashionable. More often than not, I find leaving something to the imagination to be much more appealing than the alternative.

Girls aren't able to find normal clothes at all now? O_o
What planet have you been living on?!?
/knee-jerk reaction
Really, it depends. In my experience, most stores in malls or popular store chains have clothes for girls that are either just plain ugly or too revealing for my preference. Whereas places like Target, Wal-Mart, and even Sears are more likely to have "normal" clothes. And at much better prices to boot.
But yeah, it's a bit harder nowadays to find a shirt that isn't low-cut, doesn't fit so tight that it merges with your skin, doesn't come down all the way, all of the above, etc.
However, having said that...it's not the clothes I have a problem with so much as the promotion of them. Magazine ads, television spots, fashion shows - most of them tend to promote the idea that a woman or young girl must look sexy in order to be...well, oddly enough, normal, or accepted - well liked among her peers. And I agree that it's reaching down to kids that are really too young to be worrying about their appearance.
I'd like to clarify a lot of this, but I have a class in a few minutes. Until I can get back on, ask away. :p

The planet where I've never really had to purchase women's clothing. :p
I didn't know that the choice not to buy a shirt that didn't show a little belly wasn't an option. I just figured girls liked it... I know I did! ^_^
If it's to the point where a girl can't find anything at all in the store she's comfortable in, then yeah, there is a problem with that. I just don't want the option to buy belly shirts and low-rise pants to disappear all together for the more trendy "as much cloth as possible..." thing this report mentioned to my slowly breaking heart.
Talking to JC Jr, "You know, when I was younger women wore things were you could actually.... see their legs."
JC Jr, "Really, pa'!?? Like... their shins n' stuff."
Me, "No, Lil' Johnny.. you actuall saw up past their knees on regular occaions!"
JC Jr, "Oh my god!"
Me, "Mmm, hm. Back in those days it was even okay for women to show off their stomach and upper arms. Infact, that's what your mother use to wear."
JC Jr, "That's just gross dad. I'm tellin' mom, yer fibbin'."
Me as an old man has a nice hearty laugh at the expense of my wide-eyed boy, who imagines a fantastical world no long gone.... never to return again.

It's not that I prefer "as little skin as possible," it's that I don't find letting everything "hang out" in everyday situations to be all that appealing. There's a very attractive balance somewhere between "slutwear" and school marm.

Women are awesome, Lucky Bob. They're these little fairy or pixie beings with higher voices and sometimes covered in little bits of glitter.
They smell good and can make you feel all warm n' safe sometimes.
Magical beings they are, that wear garments you or I have never heard of, like "camesols" and the such.
They're hard to catch, but just seeing one, can be a vision to be beheld.

(Hurricanes aside) Good thing I live in Florida. It's "slutwear", 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 5 weeks a month, 12 months a year, ect.
But seriously, a woman in a parka can be sexy. It all comes down to whether or not she can make it work. And obviously, slutwear does not always sexy make, because there's plenty of people who don't have the bodies to make slutwear work.
Then again, I'm almost a frickin' beach-walking hermit, so what the hell do I know. :p

Well, I'm a little glad that cover up is back. I'm sick and tired of seeing my peer's panty showing like every day. And that, when i see those peers when i visit (need to change location. I go to another school). Also, having to see a girl wear hoop earings, short sleeve shirt, mini skirt, stockings and sandals in the winter is an eyesore. They think that wearing capri's, sandals, a tang top under a button up shirt is "sluttish". The people at my old school...something was wrong with their minds.
I don't get why these fashions have to be in style. It's gives a bad vibe to a girl that looking....like a prostitute will get you far. It won't. It never worked. A girl having a tatoo was fired from my aunt's work.
Well, gotta go.
