now that I'm reading about this SONY bid purchase of MGM, what, if anything, does this mean for the MGM cartoon library? is this already owned outright by Time-Warner?

just wondering, hope it won't stall any future dvd releases...

The way I see it, there's two different "MGM's".

MGM 1: The MGM library that Ted Turner owns aka every MGM film made until a certain year in the 1980's.

MGM 2: The present day MGM from a certain year in the 1980's to present.

The way I'm looking at this, the MGM that Sony is planning to purchase consists of the more recent MGM library, not the MGM library that includes the Tom and Jerry cartoons.

so, on a vaguely related note, would Sony now own James Bond, or...?

Or rather, the James Bond movie franchise. Sir Ian Fleming's estate still controls the property overall.

Cartoon-speaking, what Sony is getting from this purchase, is the Depatie-Freleng library. (Pink Panther, Inspector, Ant & Aardvark, etc.)

Yes, Sony get Pink Panther and the other MGM cartoons beside Tom & Jerry.

Cartoon-speaking, what Sony is getting from this purchase, is the Depatie-Freleng library. (Pink Panther, Inspector, Ant & Aardvark, etc.)Pretty much.

Sony is also getting derivatives from those characters (including the Hanna-Barbera-made Pink Panther and Sons and the in-house 90s Pink Panther [you know, the one where The Pink Panther talks . . . too much]) plus James Bond, Jr., Robocop: Alpha Commando, All Dogs Go To Heaven and its derivatives, The Pebble and the Penguin, The Secret of NIMH and its derivatives, a bunch of American International films (including Heavy Traffic and The Many Lives of Fritz The Cat), Stargate: Infinities or whatever that animated series was called, and The Lionhearts (and you think Father of the Pride was bad; this show pretty much has the same premise - - a lion named Leo Lionheart, who just happens to be the mascot of MGM, deals with family life at home).

Yeah, I think that should just about cover it.

I hope TimeWarner wins the bid, unless Sony's already won. I'd like to see the Pink Panther on CN again.

library-wise, Sony is getting:

--all United Artists films and properties (this is most important because the big franchises MGM has are actually from UA)
--all MGM films from 1986 forward
--all Orion/Filmways/American International films
--Polygram's library

Cartoon-wise, it's just Pink Panther and related DePatie-Freleng properties...

The MGM library that Ted Turner owns....

Ah, PAST TENSE in regard to TED TURNER, mind you.

In the summer of 2003, he walked away from his Vice-Chairman Position at TIME WARNER, and in effect..has NO ownership or control over the properties that still bear hsi name! :o

All of the said TURNER creations & properties that were his (e.g. Superstation TBS, The ATLANTA BRAVES, CNN, CARTOON NETWORK, et.al. ) are now wholly-owned and operated by TIME WARNER!

I don't know if this is a totally bad thing. I mean I can't even recall what Sony does well with all of its movies and TV shows. I'd like to see them spin some gold from that library purchase.

I'd like to see them spin some gold from that library purchase.I'm certainly hoping that they'll learn to appreciate the animation in their library, though if memory serves me correctly, they haven't done much with the animation they have, both the classic shorts as well as the modern shows. Aside from their acquired animated films, the Mainframe Spider-Man series, and Cyborg 009, Sony really hasn't put out a lot of animation titles. I would kill for season sets of Men in Black and The Real Ghostbusters (especially this year, considering this is the 20th anniversary of the franchise) myself.

I'm just hoping the American version of Animax in the works will utilize the combined library to its fullest.

Let's hope Sony utilize their found resources that they now have MGM, and continue to have a good partnership with Time Warner. I'm also hoping that they do DVD sets of MIB & Ghostbusters (Original & Extreme).

Sony is now the owner of DePatie-Freleng cartoons, both theatrical and television, and specials (except DFE's Dr. Seuss specials, which I think is owned by Fox)

Here's some on what they own

Pink Panther
The Inspector
Roland and Rattfink
The Ant and the Aardvark
Tijuana Toads
The Blue Racer*
Hoot Kloot*
The Dogfather*

* - still yet to be released on video.
