I was going to make a post in the thread about the military death toll thread, there seems to be a lot of anger and politics there. So I thought an American political thread that does not involve debates might be a good idea and this day seems like a good day to make one.

I see the United States as a noble nation, not for strength but for humility. Humility is above many things one of the greatest virtues of our nation. For we are not a nation that proclaims a system, a goverment, and a society that is absolute and right. We admit that our system, goverment, and society has flaws and when we do things that are wrong we right those wrongs by learning from them and moving forward. We evolve, we take the good from the past and we damn the bad. But we do not forget the bad, we teach it. We teach and preach to our children the wrongs and the mistakes that this nation has made not to teach them to hate this country but to understand what this country evolved from and what it cannot be again.

What makes this country great is that it never looks back, it learns and it moves forward constantly perfecting, constantly looking at its own flaws, constantly making itself better even through the occasional set backs. We are a nation of humiliation, a nation that doesn't get red and hide but accepts its mistakes and its faults. That is to me with freedom, liberty, justice, and the right to be happy what makes the US great.

Please no Bush bashing, no Kerry bashing, no conservative or liberal bashing. No debates, just opinions.

For some strange reason I feel humility is not a prevalent characteristic of the United States. But that is just me.

What makes America great is the fact that you can complain about the goverment without fear of imprisonment.

The people. We are a melting pot of diversity, yet we are all Americans- not by blood, but by our love of freedom that our nation gives us.

Our Consitution is one of the more laudable documents in the stretches of history and a despite occasional national immodesty and prevarications of our leaders, Americans tend to be resistant in the face of attempts at suppression or opression of ideas. And that is crucially admirable.

Coca-Cola. Ted Turner. The Varsity. Krispy Kreme donuts. Williams Street.

Wait, that's what makes Atlanta rock.

That we have freedom and that we can come together in a time of need and grief...

All the freedoms we have. I think it's important that people be allowed to speak out against what they think is unfair or unjust without fear. People without opinions just makes everything boring. Dreaming big, learning, and just the people who make it possible.

It's hard for me to do this since I'm so tired of hearing about all the anti-American-ism going around, being booed at the Olympics, people out to hurt us, how we're so big and bad and evil, and all that. It gets to me and makes me all depressed

But I think we're seen as rude and loud sometimes because we have the freedom to express ourselves and be who we are, so we can be very casual about things.
