FAMILY WAY: Fox  will air two Family Guy (http://www.tvguide.com/tv/showguide/ShowPage.asp?iprogramid=460143) mini-marathons opposite NBC's Olympics coverage on Aug. 18 and 25 from 8 to 10 pm/ET, Variety reports. This will mark the first time the show has aired on Fox since the network axed it in 2002. Original episodes of the cult phenom will debut on Fox next year.
___________________________________________________________________
Mojo_Jojo's Thoughts: Can you believe this? I think that it is wrong for FOX, who axed the show more than once to air it again. I think that Cartoon Network should have been the one to air new episodes in Adult Swim. FOX is only going to air new episodes in 2005 thanks to its popularity on Adult Swim and its DVD sales. It's also on TBS as well. Well, maybe we should be glad because their has been talks of that Family Guy movie again and new episodes!

Is this what they call being desperate?

Are they doing this to fill in timeslots or to try and say "Hey look it got bad ratings again!"
Desperate? No. If they were desperate they would actually try and schedule it decently.

Fox has to be the dumbest station on the planet... As great as Family Guy is, there's just no way it can compete with the Olympics (no pun intended :D ). Fox is just trying to get rid of Family Guy again. They need to put the show at an appropriate timeslot.

By airing it against the ratings whore that is the Olympics? How is it getting it back in people's minds if the audience is elsewhere?

I think the target audience for the Olympics (i.e. me) is totally different from those of viewers of Family Guy (i.e. my brother). Now I am a fan of Family Guy, and would definitely watch FOX if NBC shows bad events.
On August 18th, there's going to be men's gymnastics, swimming and shotput. I will not watch the men's gymnasts or some of the swimming events.
On August 25th, Women's Track, Diving, Triathlon, and Wrestling are featured. I have no interest in the latter two.
Therefore, I predict that if Family Guy fans are loyal enough, they could make a serious effort to finish a modest 2nd or 3rd that night because I think regular CBS and ABC viewers have an interest in the Olympics. I doubt that all or most of you (including myself) aren't that wild on what NBC has to offer for those two nights.
I don't see a problem with this. It's still a long time before new episodes air, and I think every station gives in to the Olympics and doesn't try to compete with NBC. It'll be weird to see FG back on Fox I'll say that, but I guess it's best to get used to it now, for next year. FOX will still finish 4th..

I'm amazed at the conspiracy theories abounding here. I can't see four hours of Family Guy in a dead spot against the olympics having any sort of effect on anything, I'm probably just taking the 'narrow' view though.
Tobias
08-02-2004, 08:47 PM
Why bring it back against the Olympics though? Fox had plenty of open holes this summer, which they chose to fill with same week repeats (sometimes 2) of the new shows. Why not use Sunday night as a relaunching pad for FG? Put Malcolm back at 9 and put FG at 7:30, and to hell with the extra viewing of Quintuplets.

I agree. If no one's noticed the Olympics hasn't been popular since CBS completely ****ed up it's Olympic coverage and alienated most of the Olympic's fans. I remember they used to announce the winners before they aired the events, effectively killing the popularity of the Olympics.

I don't think marathons are ever intended to be big ratings draws or measures of ratings. They'd be foolish to expect people to sit through the entire thing.

Huh. This is reminiscent of what happened to Clerks. On the premiere night it was up against CBS's Survivor AND a major basketball game on NBC. Talk about your bad luck...
Well it could be worse. If these were NEW episodes, that would be a big problem. As long as Fox doesn't put Family Guy up against a huge ratings puller in 2005, I wouldn't get too worked up about it.

Fox doesn't want to ruin their proven Sunday night lineup (which usually is second or third in the ratings), and all the networks just air movies or old shows at the time the Olympics are on. I think Family Guy has a decent chance of getting Fox up to second on those 2 Sunday nights (ahead of CBS an and ABC), and I'm glad Fox is bringing it back now. I see them airing 12 episodes those 2 weekends, and if the ratings do well, then it could break in earlier than everyone expected it to.

It's pretty damn hard to watch the Olympics without flipping channels. It's half sport, half human-interest story. There aren't that many people who are going to like both.
I'm sure some people will flip to Family Guy and than flip back to see their favorite events. I'll be watching Family Guy while NBC does stories on some competitor's third-cousin's cancer.

Or, to paraphrase Butt-head, "Stewart, let's watch cartoons. You can watch the Olympics anytime."

Actually these are Wednesday nights... if FG fans are rabid enough they could beat CBS, who I believe is showing re-runs of 60 Minutes and King of Queens. I have a feeling that their regular viewers will watch the Olympics.

Exactly. I don't like the olympics either, but AS has been showing Family Guy four (or five) days a week for a year now. I've seen every episode a dozen times. NBC and Fox both stink and I'll probably be watching baseball.
Elven Moon

Odd they would choose THAT time and those days to air them, out of all they could've chosen ;P Still, some (lots, actually) of the Olympics can be boring if you're not there personally, and Family Guy would be something else to watch.
Over hyped Olympics vs. Overrated Family Guy?

Fox has lots of other crap to fill time against the Olympics. This seems like they're just throwing away Family Guy. But then again, I'm big on Olympic sports. Maybe the young adults with no interest in these sports will find FG on Fox.
But aren't they getting to the point where FG is just being overexposed. It's on AS, on TBS, now back on Fox, plus on DVD. Sure, it's popular but there is such a thing as overkill. (^_*)

Family Guy is on no more than the Simpsons.
I can agree on that somewhat because my local WB affiliate plays The Simpsons in syndication three times a day at 6:00, 6:30,and 10:00pm and it also plays on Fox. I am a fan of The Simpsons so that is a good thing for me!:) Anyway, Family Guy plays what Sunday-Thursday at 11:00pm/e & repeats the same episode at 2:00am/e on Cartoon Network? I do not think that it is overplayed so much like some of the other shows on CN, which I won't get into. It also plays on TBS on Wednesdays at 8:00pm/e for an hour. I mean this is good for people who can't catch CN because I didn't at one time until 2001. So,that is good for those people in a way and those who don't or forget to watch Family Guy on AS.

But if it just sucked me, I'd sure give it a look.;)
So Fox first decides to delay new FG until summer next year...and now they're airing repeats where they know the show will fail? With these trends, I see another cancellation in FG's future, once again because of their own stupidity.

I don't think Fox is putting Family Guy there to actually get ratings. They're just throwing it out there to see what they get. And, they realized FG has a fanbase now. I would be too worried about another cancelation for another ten seasons or so (unless the show starts to suck, which I highly doubt).

For those that watched it, Fox aired four back-to-back episodes of Family Guy tonight, chosen by Seth MacFarlane himself: "Ready, Willing, and Disabled", "Brian Wallows and Peter's Swallows", "Road to Rhode Island", and "European Road Show". Anyway, just thought I'd mention a few glaring edits that stood out:
-In "Brian Wallows", the scene where the old man turns the light on and off edited the word "crapped" out of his line: "What's the matter with you people?! When I saw this at the World's Fair I nearly crapped my pants!"
-In "European Road Show", Brian's line "Wanna take a dump in Mother Maggie's shoes?" is edited so "dump" is omitted.
-Obviously, the Bin Laden scene from "Road to Rhode Island", but that doesn't really count, as it hasn't been shown since 9/11.
-Another obvious/doesn't count one: Jerry Springer in place of George W. Bush in "Brian Wallows". And I think the Twin Towers were edited out as well.
Anyway, my question is, why were "crapped" and "dump" muted out? Of all networks, you'd think Fox would be less concerned about those, and they're not even curse words. Just seemed very odd, especially since all these edits aren't present on CN (to my knowledge, except for Bin Laden, of course). I'm gonna get to the bottom of it, consarn it!
(P.S. to mods: Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I was thinking that Family Guy is a part of Adult Swim currently and since 90% of discussion about it is here, it'd fit, even though tonight's marathon was on Fox)

I noticed that, too. Why is Fox editing FG even more!? WTF?
They also edited the word 'dump' in European Road Show.
Brian: Want to take a ---- in Mother Maggie's shoes? Come on, let's take a ---- in Mother Maggie's shoes.
I hope Fox doesn't pull this with the new episodes next year.
What the hell was that. DUMP is deemed unsuitable by the network who brought us [Any FOX show will fit here, really, lets just say The Simple Life]?

Man, the line about taking a dump in Mother Maggie's shows was the funniest line in that episode. It sucks to hear they edited out the word dump. I'd imagine that made the line less funny.
Oh, and here I was thinking Family Guy coming back to Fox was a good thing. What the hell is this show, Ren & Stimpy?!
You know, are crap and dump really that bad of words? Does this mean that the various mentions of "*****" are going to be edited as well? Hey, Fox, in fact, instead of keeping Family Guy a show for adults, make it a nice family show that the whole damn family can come together and enjoy, while you ruin a perfectly good comedy.

This kind of think happens sometimes during pro wrestling shows. Some words fit for television have been known to be muted at certain points. Although I don't think I've ever seen a show likee Family Guy having the same thing done before.

Maybe with the earlier 8 PM showing FOX had to tone down the (almost) language for a less harse V-chip rating.

Fox always aired FG between 8 and 9 in it's original run, even when they bounced it around the schedule like a basketball.
The only reason I can think of for doing this is that they wanted the family audience that the Olympics would have brought in.

Hopefully they won't do this stuff during the regular TV season when the show comes back. Of course most underage viewers will be busy getting ready for school around then, thus keeping them from accessing it so well. Then again, even during that time Fox would still have shows like "Trading Bodies" and "Who Wants to Marry David Gest."

There's a line in the "Awfully Different" song from "European Road Show" where Brian sings, "Your head's as massive as a meteorite...", then Stewie sings, "You have a weenie like a Christmas tree light!" Great song, BTW.
oh, yea~h...thanks. :D That's a good one.

So, if Fox and CN both air the new episodes in the same week, won't it lead to lower ratings overall? I mean, half the viewers will watch them on Fox, the other half will watch them on CN.
For the first week until they realize that Fox has censored it too much and then they'll watch the CN airings as much as possible.

Who will realize this and who will do this? A handfull of people on the internet?

I only caught the 2nd half of Road To Rhode Island and the full Road To Europe episode. I can't help but feel sorry for poor Brian after he finds his mom dead and Stewie irritating him.
BTW,I was shocked when they edited out the word "dump". Dump is not a bad word.

I hear the nudist episode had the characters blurred.
So...they wont show naked parts, but they show people having sex.
Stupider like a Fox!

Yes, the nudists butts had large pinkish dots over them.
Oddly enough, the pope was allowed to show his holy butt.

Family Guy finished 2nd on Wednesday night.

i don't think many people will be watching the olympics (cause of everything thats happening in the world, not much of an interest, and Greece is having all kinds of problems)
??? It's gotten record ratings on some days, and is destroying the competition in general.
Only commies would miss the Olympics. Go USA!

I totally agree with you. I mean "Joe Mililonaire", "My Big, Fat Fiancee", and "The Littlest Groom"?! I don't mean to sound so harsh, but seriously isn't there something the matter with the people who write these shows?! I lost 35 IQ points after watching them!
i kinda liked joe mililonaire but the other ones stunk

Here is the listing of episodes for tomorrow, according to tv.yahoo.com:
8pm EDT - "Wasted Talent"
8:30pm EDT - "He's Too Sexy For His Fat"
9pm EDT - "I Am Peter, Hear Me Roar"
9:30pm EDT - "To Live and Die In Dixie"Why do I have a feeling they're going to censor a lot of the last two? (especially the 1950s video and the old guy Chris sends papers to) I guess watching Fox air these episodes is like waiting to see what happens at a train wreck or something.

Criminal: First I'm gonna go ... my girlfriend, then kill Chris Griffin.
Stewie: Good lord. Can you really say ... my girlfriend on TV?
Me: Guess not.

There's an article on Family Guy's good ratings opposite the Olympics on tvguide.com if anyone cares:

And they even briefly mention the Bush-era censorship. Though, I've never heard it being referred to as Bush-era censorship, it's usually referred to as post-nipplegate censorship.

They also censored one of the best lines in "Hear Me Roar":
"Oh, isn't she the one who we videotaped taking a dump last year?"
They can throw feces in there but not dump? Hmph. At least they kept the best line in there - Peter's bumper sticker, that is. And I am very amazed that they kept the Mark Twain reference and Stewie saying Meg should be laid in the 9:30 episode.
And the last line in "Dixie" - you can say that on 24, why not Family Guy?
I can only fear what would happen to Chappelle's Show if it were on a non-premium station besides Comedy Central...
