On August 24th, Funimation will finally release the long-awaited Case Closed DVDs. A very popular series in Japan, Case Closed is also quickly gaining recognition in North America. Because of this, we will finally see the advent of episodes being released for our own personal enjoyment.
But much to everyone's surprise, the DVDs will be released in a strange manner. Notably, the first two volumes jump from the first four episodes, to somewhere in the beginning of the third season. On top of all else, the price of obtaining the series is somewhat expensive. At this moment, there have been nearly 370 episodes shown in Japan. It is the single longest-running anime series ever. Funimation plans to release the DVDs at a suggested price of $19.98 with three to four episodes per disc. Every six to eight weeks a new DVD will be issued.
Now let's look at the math... Since the number of episodes per disc is 3 to 4, let's assume the average is 3.5. When 370 [episodes] are divided by 3.5, the answer equates roughly to 105.7. Rounding that number up is 106. That means there will be 106 Volumes considering the series ended tomorrow. Next, multiply 106 [volumes] by the price, $19.98. This equals to over $2117.88.
Of course since the rate at which the DVDs will be released is every 6 to 8 weeks, it will take a number of years before all the discs are given out!
Considering the knowledge you now know, Are You Going to Buy Case Closed DVDs?

Not me even though it would be nice. But I'm already collecting seris right now so that would be a lot of money going out of my wallet

I am undecided at this point, but if I do decide to go ahead and buy Case Closed DVDs, I will wait for boxed sets to come out. It is generally much cheaper that way.

I don't see myself buying all of the episodes on DVD, but I may get some of the better episodes like the 2-parters.

No...too many episodes for a series I am fairly indifferent towards.

Yeah I guess I'm undecided as well. Maybe wait for the box sets or maybe not. Its hard because DVDs are not cheap. Collecting two seris at once would really kill my money as I said before.

I'm going to wait for Season Boxed Sets. I learned my lesson with Yu Yu Hakusho. The price of the Boxed Sets is easily less than what I have paid for the individual DVDs.

No. Unless there's one with an episode I like on it. Otherwise, too expensive.

No a big part of the show is trying to solve the case and well once you know what happens it's not as fun to watch again.

No, and it's because of one thing: replay value. This being a mystery series, once you've seen the ending of each episode then there's really little point in rewatching it again. It's good to watch once, but not more than twice (at least for me).

There are 360+ episodes, I'll just round the number to 360.
360 divided by 3(the episode ammount per disc) is 120
120 is the number of DVD volumes
30(the inital price of a volume) times 120 is $3600 even if the discs were 20 bucks each it would still cost $2400.
Now then for that high ammount you could get alot of other series that are of less episodes, Nadia only costs around 60 to get the whole series, Excel Saga can be also had for at 60 for the entire series, Twelve Kingdoms for the seven released volumes(the series still has a few 4 episode ratio discs left) would be $120, card captor Sakura for the first 15 volumes costs 270, in other words you can get alot of different se4ries instead of just one big one...

Case Closed isn't a series with an end so I don't see why I'd need it all. Certainly if there was a few truly great episodes I'd pick up the volumes or if AS cans it I may on a whim pick one or to up.

I'm leaning towards "Yes, but I will wait for boxed season-sets to come out." But THAT is only if they make actual, American-style season sets rather than just a box with a bunch of regular DVDs in it. I'm not counting on that, so I don't know what I'll do about Case Closed DVDs. It's really just too many, considering that the series is well over 300 episodes (and still going) and that some of the DVDs have as little as 3 episodes on them. It's possible that we'll be talking about over 100 DVDs here! Are they insane?
As I've been saying, they really need to just wake up and realize that, for the past few years, American TV shows have been released in a way that makes MUCH more sense.

I'd really like to, but I honestly can't justify putting so much money (due to the volume of disks) towards a show that's fun but fairly disposable in the end.

Maybe in YOUR half of the continent. :P (Yeah, I know I'm being petty, but I'm in a bit of an anti-FUNi mood today).
But no, I'm not buying the DVDs.

I'm not going to buy and Detective Conan/Case Closed DVD's because, while I like show, as Arxane said mysteries just don't have much replay value. That and it'll be a tad too expensive. Though if cheap box-sets become available, I might change my tune, but I doubt I will.

I will not. When I catch the show on Adult Swim, I'm mildly entertained, but don't laugh or think enough while watching the show. With so many completed seasons of past shows that are closer to my heart, this program will have to wait until it hits the clearance rack before I consider it.

Maybe a handful or so that have some episodes I really like, but I doubt I'll have more than 6 at the most. It's not like you need all the episodes to follow the story.

I think I'll buy the first and then only buy movies.
I might. It just depends how I feel about the series. Either way, if I was going to buy CC DVDs they'd be cheap, and most likely in box set form. There are just so many episodes.. I'm just unsure right now, even though I like the show greatly.

I would purchase them when the complete box set rolls around. But I doubt I'll buy em individually. I am already buying some other anime in that fashion which is draining my wallet.
I also agree with Arxane. Replay value does bite, unless you invite some friends (who haven't see the cases) over to watch em. Then you can watch them come up with crazy theories why so-and-so did the crime.
I guess that's why they are skipping episodes. Since Funi might be afraid that people will not buy episodes that already aired on Adult Swim.

No I like Case Closed but I'd rather spend my money on anime that aren't on TV. I will buy the movies though.

Man, I'm going to be buying the DVD's for one big reason. The volumes that are about to come out (after the first one here, which is Season 1 , Volume 1) will be of season 3 (episodes 53 through 78), which means they will never before have been seen on TV. There's also that big question of "What is there to do at times of the day?" I'd rather watch a rerun of Case Closed during that time than boring shows like, oh, lets say "Ellen." As a piece of info for everyone, there will probably be 7 or 8 discs per season. If you do the math (26/3= 8.6, 26/ 4= 6.5), then the middle comes out to be 7.5.

What FUNi should do (probably not until the entire series is finished/licensed) is make a big honkin' "Best of Case Closed" boxset with all "important" episodes.
First 5 or so episodes.
Most popular episodes.
Any episode with new character introductions.
Any episode with big-picture plot points unveiled.
Something like that probably wouldn't be much more than 50 episodes.

My plan is to buy the first DVD (with the intro episodes and whatnot), and then pick and choose a few more to eventually purchase after that. While I don't think I'd ever buy the entire series, I do think Conan's a great show - definitely worth the money for at least a few DVDs, and certainly the movies if/when they come out. As far as price goes, I was actually surprised at how cheap the first three are going to be... Robert's Anime Corner Store (http://store.yahoo.com/animecorner/caseclosed.html) has them going for only $15 a pop.

I just don't see the attraction of watching DC/CC repeatedly. It's a mystery show, once the mystery is solved than there's not much point in watching every single episode again, at least not immediately. Give me a couple years or something. If I found one at an exceptional price than I might one just to show other people.
I do like TylerL's idea though.

Agreed with Tyler. There's no way in hell I'm gonna buy 350 episodes of DC/CC when most of it doesn't continue the main storyline.

Same here. I'm spending my money lately on stuff like Kiddy Grade and other stuff.
But currently I don't have much to spend at this time, and to probbly make things a bit issued here, it seems there are alot of DBZ haters if they are cheating and just getting the Fan subbed version, that is why there are alot of No's here, I mean the voices is what, most DBZ haters will use because of the voices are bad, although that is just a thought, because I voted yes on my end.

It's just as I thought... The majority of voters agree that they aren't going to buy CC DVDs. Funimation needs to include more episodes per disc, lower prices, or include extras to entice the public. At this point, the negatives are outweighing the postives...:(

And I best the last of the negitive affects are resulted by certian character voices, plus being a bit annoying similar to DBZ of coruse, but that is just my thought on it.
