OK, this is my first Teen Titans fan fic, so please don't hate me if it goes wrong. This first prologue was just a very quick idea I had, and will evolve into a true storyline. This chapter is terrible, but once I get a proper feel for the story I am creating, I hope it will improve.

------------------------------------

Prologue: Quest for Revenge.

Raven hovered inches above the floor, cross-legged and with eyes closed. She chanted continuously, focussing her minds eye on a single point. One moment in time stretched into an eternity of thought. Black energy crackled in the room, shadows stretched across the walls. Sounds were drowned out by an oppressive silence created by the girl’s intense concentration. The pendant on the table moved, and began to glow a deep red….

“Hey Raven! What’s up!” a voice shouted. Raven’s concentration wavered. The pendant’s glow dimmed. Raven’s eyes shot open. The grinning green face of Beast Boy greeted her.

“I’m in the middle of something, what do you want?” Raven asked in a monotone voice.

“Have you seen Cy? I can’t find him. Robin and Starfire don’t know where he is either.” Beast Boy was still grinning.

“No, I haven’t seen him. Now will you leave me in peace? I’m very busy.”

Beast Boy pouted. “That’s exactly what Robin and Star said when I asked them,” he said dejectedly, and he stalked out of the room. The door slid shut behind him. Raven sighed, and closed her eyes once again, and began to concentrate. In such a large tower with so many rooms, it was amazing how Beast Boy could find anyone but the person he was looking for. The pendant on the table once again glowed red, as the shadows loomed deeper into the room.

Beast Boy walked down the corridor, past several doors and side-corridors until he reached the stairs. He was planning on checking the gym to see if Cyborg was working out, but he was allergic to that particular room. The idea of lifting weights and sweating for enjoyment was not one Beast Boy agreed with. Besides, Cyborg had already done his morning training, and it was doubtful that he’d be in there again. Beast Boy was searching for any excuse not to go in there.

After a fruitless search that covered Cyborg’s workshop, his bedroom (and cupboard), and for some reason the contents of the Titan’s fridge, which involved a titanic struggle, Beast Boy finally gave up his search. He threw himself down on the couch, and delved his hand down behind the cushions in a search for the remote.

“Hey BB. You looking for this?” A metallic hand held up the elusive controller. Beast Boy looked up.

“Dude, where have you been? I’ve been looking for you everywhere.”

“Yeah, sorry about that. Someone had to get some food. Our fridge is pretty empty. All that was in there was…”

“…some old greasy pizza that had evolved its own identity, yeah, I know.” Beast Boy shuddered. “That was the first time that something I tried to eat bit me back! Anyway, I was looking for you because I want to challenge you to a game of X Race 3000. I want revenge for my humiliating defeat!”

“Sure,” Cyborg said confidently. “I’ll be happy to kick your butt again.”

The console was started, and the massive television that dominated one side of the main living area was switched on. The title screen appeared, before fading into the scene of a starting line. The players glared at each other, before yelling, “Let’s race!” The sound of engines blasted from the screen. A countdown could be heard.

“You’re going down!”

“In your dreams, green boy!”

The race began. Cyborg pulled ahead within seconds, but Beast Boy was close on his heels. The computer racers were left in the dust. The game soon turned into a deadly duel, as each racer tried everything to win.

“Yo, get your tentacles off my control pad!”

“Dude, I don’t see a rare Jump City sea falcon…hey!”

Beast Boy was on the final stretch of the race. He was ahead of Cyborg, and within inches of the finish line…then everything went black. The TV switched off, the console stopped its quiet hum, and the lights flickered and dimmed. Beast Boy let out a howl of dismay.

“Aw yeah! I’m still number 1!” Cyborg said victoriously.

A voice echoed through the tower. “Titans, trouble!”

Wow. I've read a few titans fan fics around, and I have to say, this is the first one that I find I can actually believe so far. What I mean is, it's something I could see happening during the times we don't see them on the show. Great job there! :D

I'm quite looking forward to how you handle other scenes, but as a prologue, this really works, and for the start of a first fic, it's great! :D

Great job there! :D

I'm quite looking forward to how you handle other scenes, but as a prologue, this really works, and for the start of a first fic, it's great! :D Yay, a good review! Thanks!

OK ya'll, this is the first true chapter to "Vanishing Act." I'm sure you can guess from the title who the villain will be. This fanfic will only be a short one, comprising maybe 5 chapters at the most. This first one didn't turn out as I had planned, but it'll do for now, and I will improve as it goes along.

I hope
--------------------------------------
Chapter 1: A dissapearance or two

From the outside, Titan’s Tower was a dark shape. There were no lights from the windows, no movement inside; it was completely dark. Let the eye rise above the tower, and look across to Jump City. Lights across the large populated area flickered out, until half the city was blacked out. The failing light from the setting sun cast long shadows across the streets, and the people of the city were on the verge of panic. The Teen Titans made their way slowly through the dark metropolis. Beast Boy, in the form of an eagle, and Starfire flew above the rooftops, searching for the source of the blackout. Raven, Cyborg and Robin stuck to the streets.

“So this isn’t just a normal power outage then?” Cyborg asked.

“No, there’s something else going on. The reports were vague, but they sounded panicky,” Robin replied.

“Probably just some security guards afraid of the dark. When the power went, they called us in to feel safe.” Raven had a hint of resigned frustration in her voice. “I hate being disturbed when meditating.”

Beast Boy spiralled down towards them, changing back into his human form. Starfire landed next to Robin.

“Dude, you’d better look at this!” Beast Boy said, leading them a little way down the street. The Titans gasped at what they saw.

A chain link fence ran around a large area. Signs were posted every ten feet, saying “Danger: High Voltage! Keep Out!” But there was nothing to keep out of, just a patch of empty ground. A pillar of rock stuck up from the asphalt, and a panicky voice called out to them.

“Um…help? Please?”

Starfire flew up, and lifted the man down to the ground. “Please, tell us,” she asked when he had regained his composure, “What has happened here?”

The security guard looked at each of the Teen Titans. “I’m not sure. I was sitting in my hut, watching the security monitors, when they started cutting out. I thought the cameras must have been malfunctioning, so I went on my rounds to check the cameras. Then some guy with a stick ran in here, and made the ground beneath me rise into that column I was on. He waved his stick, and the power plant vanished! Disappeared!”

“It just disappeared?” Robin asked. “What about all the people inside?”

“Nah, no one was inside. The whole thing becomes automated at the end of the day, so everyone goes home except the night guard.” The distressed man sobbed at this point. “And today that was me! I thought that madman was going to make me disappear at that point, but he just laughed at me and ran off.”

The Titans looked at each other.

“Mad Mod?” Beast Boy suggested. “That wavy cane of his could do some pretty weird things.” He shuddered as he remembered the hypno-screens.

“I don’t think so,” replied Robin. “His cane only worked in the virtual twisted school he had us trapped in. I don’t think he could make a building this large just disappear.”

“Friends, why do we not search the city for this bad person?” Starfire asked. “Maybe he has made other structures disappear?”

“Right. Starfire, Beast Boy, you search from the sky. Cyborg, Raven, take the West side of town. I’ll start on the East. Teen Titans, go!”

*************
It had been several hours since the search began. Beast Boy had taken the shape of a hawk again, and was circling the city. His sharp bird eyes caught something in the darkness of the city. He circled in lower, and landed on the street. He morphed back to human form. He looked closer at what he had spotted. It looked like a normal street, rows of shops lining the side of the road. But there was a large gap between two of the buildings.

“Wasn’t there a bank here?” he asked himself. Before he could do anything, he heard a loud cackle. Beast Boy looked up, and saw a figure standing on a nearby roof. A cape flapped in the breeze. "Dude, laughing maniacally is very annoying!" Beast Boy shouted. The dark figure raised an arm, and flicked his hand. A dark, short rod was clenched in his hand. He said something Beast Boy couldn’t hear, but the effect made him yelp. The road cracked down the middle, and a loud hiss emanated from the ground. A large snake rose from the street, and glared at the green teen. It was as tall as the buildings surrounding it. It was jet black, with piercing red eyes.

“Er…hi?” Beast Boy said uncertainly. The snake hissed again, bearing giant fangs. “Ah!” Beast Boy panicked, and, in the form of a cheetah, sprinted down the street. A loud hiss behind him indicated the snake was following. It snapped forward, barely missing Beast Boy’s tail. He ducked down a side alley, and collided with something, forcing him back into human form. Dazed, he looked around the alley, and saw a form lying on the ground. It stood, its cape flapping in the breeze. “Yah!” Beast Boy said, turning to run again.

“Whoa, Beast Boy, wait, it’s me!” Robin said, dusting off. “What were you doing running like that?”

“Dude! Giant snake! Big evil snake!” Beast Boy babbled.

Robin peered round the corner of the alley, and out onto the main street. “There’s nothing there.”

“But it came right out of the ground! There was a huge crack down the street!”

“Well, there isn’t now. It’s completely crack free. You alright?”

Beast Boy’s eyes shifted side to side. He was shaking. “Dude, I have never been so terrified of an animal. I usually have a gift with them, but that thing... that was a monster! And there was this guy standing on the rooftop, laughing!”

Robin searched the street, but couldn’t find anything amiss, except for the missing bank. “So he has claimed another building,” he mused. “A bank I can understand, but why a power plant?” Robin called the other Titans. “Any luck with the search?”

“Man, there’s some crazy stuff going on,” Cyborg replied, his face appearing on Robin’s communicator. “Me and Raven were just attacked by flowers that sprayed acid!”

“My cowl will never be the same,” Raven’s morose voice could be heard in the background.

“Alright, it looks like this guy’s stopped for the night. Everyone back to the tower.”

Starfire’s voice came over the communicator. “Umm, could I have some assistance please? I seem to have been fastened to a wall.”

--------------------------------------

So, who is behind the villainy? I'm sure it's obvious, but maybe who you think it is has changed a bit. Will the Titans catch him before the whole of Jump City vanishes? And will Starfire get down from that wall? Find out next time.

Alrgiht, a second good review! *head swells* heh heh. :anime:

Ok then, here's the second chapter of Vanishing Act. Not much action in this one, it's mainly an explanation of how starfire got attached to a wall... and a little scene in the tower too. Don't expect much major action until the next chapter. Anyways, hope you enjoy this one!

Chapter 2: A Starling Retreat

Starfire was suspended on a brick wall. She didn’t know what had happened. She remembered seeing a man jumping across rooftops and laughing madly. She had followed him, watching, as the dark figure appeared to make a random path across the city’s buildings. He finally stopped, and turned around suddenly, glaring straight at Starfire. She wasn’t close enough to see his face, but she could clearly see his dark cape, which swirled around him dramatically.

“I see you!” he shouted. He said something Starfire couldn’t hear, and he waved his stick. A single yellow flower flew from the end, and shot straight at Starfire. She made to catch it, but as she did, the strange man waved his stick again, and the flower became a huge black cube, with “1000 lb” written on the side. It collided with the Tamaranian, and sent her crashing to the ground. The black object vanished, and the girl groaned. The black figure stood over her.

“And for my next trick…” he said, smiling madly as Starfire’s vision faded. When she had woken up, she found herself with her back to this wall, and a strange pressure on her shoulders and across her chest. At first she thought she had been tied to the wall, but there were no ropes, and nothing for them to wrap around if there had been any. She tried to move, but found she couldn’t without the pressure increasing. It had been at this point Robin had contacted the Titans on the communicator, and she had requested help.

And now it was arriving. Raven and Robin approached Starfire. Robin’s face was full of concern. “Are you alright?” he asked. Starfire was touched by this display of concern for her well-being.

“I am undamaged, but I am unable to move from this wall,” she replied. “Perhaps there is some sort of sticking substance holding me here?”

Raven looked at the wall, then moved to Starfire’s side, and immediately saw what the problem was.

“Um…the back of your clothes are trapped between the bricks,” she said. “There’s only way to get you off that wall.”

Starfire squeaked, and Robin’s eyes widened. “Er, well, I, er…” he said, sounding embarrassed. “Um…I’ll leave you to handle that. I…er…think I hear Beast Boy calling…” Robin made a hasty retreat.

“Raven, must I really…” Starfire didn’t finish the question before she dropped to the ground. She looked at Raven with a bemused expression.

“I just moved the bricks apart enough for you to be free from the wall.”

Starfire continued to look at her, confused. “Then why did you tell Robin…?”

“Tell him what? I didn’t say anything that would have embarrassed him,” Raven said, her voice completely serious, but a hint of a smile touched her lips. Starfire giggled, and they headed back to Titan’s tower.

In the tower, the power appeared to be back. Cyborg was sitting on the couch in the main living room, his head resting on his hands as he watched Beast Boy try to beat a beast lap time on X Race 3000. Beast Boy’s face was a look of intense concentration, but he still missed the lap by 3 seconds. Cyborg laughed, a victorious grin plastered on his face.

“Well, little man, you still can’t beat me! I am the ultimate racer!”

Beast Boy scowled. “Yeah, well, you couldn’t beat me in a real race! Me on my moped against you in the T-car!”

“You don’t have a moped!”

“One day I will!”

The girls entered the room before the argument could become a full-blown fight. Raven simply grabbed a book and started reading, whilst Starfire searched the fridge for some food. Cyborg and Beast Boy looked at them both then glanced at each other.

“What did you do to Robin?” Beast Boy asked.

“He is not back yet?” Starfire asked, looking up from the fridge and narrowly avoiding the living pizza’s latest attack.

“Oh, he’s back,” Cyborg said, “but he seems very flustered. Nothing flusters that guy!”

Starfire and Raven exchanged a brief glance. “I’m sure he’s just frustrated at not catching this mysterious vanisher,” Raven said, returning her attention to her book and trying desperately to hide the start of a smile. Cyborg and Beast Boy didn’t seem convinced, but they didn’t want to press the matter further. Cyborg checked his internal clock.

“Midnight. Time for bed, ya’ll,” he said, yawning as he stood. Beast Boy rubbed his eyes, and slinked off into the corridor, followed by Cyborg. As Starfire switched off the lights, she turned to Raven.

“Are you not going to sleep?” she asked.

“No, I think I’ll meditate for a while.”

“Very well. Goodnight Raven,” as Starfire left, Raven closed her eyes, and began to hover.

“Azarath, Metreon, Zinthos,” she chanted, quieting the emotions that broiled within her. As she concentrated, the darkness in the room deepened, and silence descended upon the tower.

OK, this chapter has been officially approved by Starfire5, which means it must be pretty good. Again, not that much action in this chapter, but there will be in the next one, I promise! On with the show! :D

Chapter 3: The Opening Act

Dawn broke over Jump City. Though many parts of the city still lacked power, the citizens of the city were calm. They had stopped panicking when the Teen Titans had been seen on patrol, and no more buildings had disappeared since the previous night. Despite the lack of electricity, people tried to live their lives as normal, although the parts of the city that still had power were becoming crowded.

Titan’s tower gleamed in the early morning light. The basement generator was functioning properly, a fact that Cyborg intended to drill into the other Titans over breakfast. They all sat around a large table, with various bits of toast and cereal boxes scattered around. Beast Boy shoved a large piece of jam-covered toast into his mouth, and almost choked on the crumbs that accompanied it.

“So, I guess one of my little creations saved us, huh?” Cyborg gloated. “Come on, who wants to thank me?”

“Get over yourself Cy!” Beast Boy said. “It wasn’t like we couldn’t survive without electricity for a bit.”

“This coming from the guy who has a nightlight by his bed?” Cyborg retorted.

“DUDE! I asked you not to tell anyone about that!”

Raven stared at the bickering friends until they silenced. “I thought the blackout was good. We need a little more darkness around the place,” she calmly said. She then added, “What kind of nightlight?” sending Starfire into a fit of giggles.

Beast Boy pouted. “Not funny. And it’s in the shape of a tiger, ok? Have I been embarrassed enough yet?”

“Not yet,” Cyborg mumbled, looking intently at the food in front of him.

Robin sat in silence, also staring at his plate. He’d barely touched his toast, and looked deep in thought. Starfire, sitting next to him, leaned across. She propped her elbows on the table, and rested her chin on her hands.

“Robin?” she said, “why are you so quiet?”

He looked up at her, straight into her eyes. He opened his mouth, shut it, blushed slightly, and then looked back at his toast. He hoped no one else had noticed the slight colouration on his face. He was thankful when he could still hear Beast Boy arguing with Cyborg. He mumbled something.

“Pardon? I did not hear what you said.”

Robin decided not to repeat what he had said as he didn’t want any one other than Starfire overhearing, so opted instead to say “I think I know who’s behind the vanishing buildings.”

“Glorious!” Starfire exclaimed. “Who is the culprit?”

“I think it may be Mumbo,” Robin said, frowning down at his toast. Once he had gotten over his embarrassing encounter with Starfire the previous night, he had put together the clues from the description Cyborg gave of the attack on him and Raven, and the vanishing buildings and come to the conclusion that it was the mad magician. But he still couldn’t work out why his first target had been a power plant.

The other Titans looked at him. “Dude, I thought we broke his wand?” Beast boy said uncertainly. “Besides, when did he learn that evil giant snake trick?”

“There wasn’t a giant snake,” Robin replied.

“Dude, it chased me down the street! I almost lost my tail! How could there not have been a snake?”

“It was an illusion,” Robin said, thinking things through as he spoke. “He’s a magician, so obviously he must be able to conjure some illusions. The snake was never really there; he just made you think it was.”

“Well it was realistic. I thought I was gonna become the Beast Boy special!”

“Might not have been so bad,” Raven said quietly.

The super powered teens then did what all teenagers have to do. They cleared up the dishes. Starfire took the milk and jam to the fridge. Before she could close the door, the living pizza leapt at her, landing on her hand. She squealed, shaking her hand. “Get it off, get it off!” she screamed, and threw it into the air. It arced across the room, and made a threatening hiss as it headed towards Raven, sitting on the couch reading a large leather-bound book. Cyborg, Beast Boy and Robin watched in fascination, as it got ever closer to her head. Without looking up, she raised a hand. The pizza was surrounded by black energy, and it stopped inches from her face. A window flew open, and with a flick of her wrist the slice of growling cheese covered bread base flew outside the tower, before plummeting to the ground below.

“Well, that’s one way to clear out the fridge,” Cyborg said.

“Dude, acrobatic pizza!” Beast Boy laughed.

Starfire blushed, and was apologising to Raven when a siren sounded. A red light lowered from the ceiling. The Titans looked to Robin, waiting for him to say his usual line.

“Trouble.”

“And there it is!” Cyborg said. “Number one hundred and ten! Robin, you have just broken the world record for most repeated phrase within a two-month period! Tell us, how does it feel?”

“Um…can we do this later? We do need to do a little thing called saving the day,” Robin replied.

“Oh, right.”

***************************************************

The team arrived at the scene. A large grey building stood ahead of them, empty and quiet. The power in this part of the city was still down. The doors creaked open, and a man in a dark cape and a black tall hat jumped through the entrance. He struck a dramatic pose beneath the ‘BANK’ sign, before laughing madly.

“Mumbo!” Robin shouted. “Your days of stealing are over!”

“On the contrary!” he replied, pausing in his laughter. “I haven’t finished my set yet!” He howled with laughter, and then pointed a short back stick with a white tip at Cyborg. “Alakazam!” he cried. A puff of blue smoke enveloped the half-machine. When it cleared, he was stuck in a horizontal cabinet; a giant saw moved back and forth across the centre.

“Yo, get me outta this thing!” he shouted. “I have a thing about getting cut in half!”

Mumbo cackled, bent his legs, and then leaped to the top of the building, before bounding away. “Raven, you get Cyborg out of that box! Star, Beast Boy, you’re with me. Teen Titans, go!”

Beast Boy changed into an eagle, flying after Mumbo, whilst Starfire grabbed Robin’s outstretched arms and carried him into the air. Raven looked at Cyborg, no trace of emotion in her eyes.

“Come on, get me outta this!” he said. There was a sudden trace of fear in his voice. “You are going to get me out of this? Right?”

Raven hid a smile. “Maybe. At some point.”

“This isn’t funny!” Cyborg shouted, before the box and saw vanished. He collapsed to the ground, and breathed a sigh of release. “Thanks, Raven.”

“I didn’t do anything. I knew the box would vanish. He’s a magician, his tricks can’t hurt people,” she said.

“Yeah? Then what about those acid flowers he sent after us yesterday?” he asked.

“Oh, those. Well, maybe some of his tricks can hurt people,” Raven said simply, levitating into the air. Cyborg’s mouth dropped open. It was the first time Raven had to work hard to suppress a laugh. She set off after the other Titans.

Cyborg ran beneath her, thoughts running through his mind.

You seriously can't tell me that none of you laughed when you read that...
I know I did.

I like that you have regular updates, unlike *cough* me *cough*.;)

I like that you have regular updates, unlike *cough* me *cough*.;)Heh, one of my Beast Boy related scenes was actually funny! Well alright! Altho I hope that my frequent scene postings aren't the only good thing about this story...

Anyways, here's the 4th chapter for Vanishing Act. Quite long compared to the previous ones, and slightly disjointed, but bear with me. I got distracted when writing this due to a huge lightning storm. Damn British weather:(

Chapter 4: A Repeat Performance

Mumbo was enjoying himself. Laughing madly, he jumped from rooftop to rooftop, evading the chasing heroes. He knew that if the chase kept up they would eventually catch him, but this was just too much fun to end! His plan had been a great success; by removing the power plant, the city became an easy target without its oh-so-vital power. And now, even during the day, robbing a bank was simple! Everyone had fled to the remaining parts of the city that still had electricity, so he was free to do as he pleased, so Mumbo had just walked into the bank, emptied the vault into his multi-dimensional magician’s hat, and left.

And he got to have some fun with the Titans! Oh yes, he was enjoying this! He turned, and waved his wand at Starfire and Robin.

“Hocus Pocus!” he shouted. Multicoloured scarves flew from the wand; reds, yellows, blues and greens all merging into one long piece of material.

Starfire was moving too fast to avoid it. It began wrapping around her, binding her arms to her sides. She dropped Robin, who rolled as he connected with the top of the roof. He turned, seeing Starfire struggle as the colourful bindings clamped her legs together. She began to descend, but her initial momentum carried her beyond the edge of the roof, and her fall became a plummet towards the street more ten storeys below. She screamed as she fell.

“Starfire!” Robin shouted. He ran to the edge of the roof, and leapt off. His fall matched Starfire’s, and he reached an arm towards her, whilst the other fired his grapple back towards the roof. He gripped Starfire around her waist and pulled her towards him, holding her tightly as the slack line tightened suddenly. His arm was wrenched violently, and he grunted in pain, but kept his grip. Robin dangled in the air, a few feet from the very solid ground. He lowered Starfire gently to the ground, before making the short drop to street level. He bent over Starfire, and undid the magic scarves that held her.

“Oh, thank you Robin!” Starfire said, embracing him in a tight hug. Robin winced as his overtaxed arm throbbed, but he didn’t let on that it was causing him discomfort.

“No problem Star,” he replied, slowly disentangling from the Tamaranian girl’s grateful gesture. “We need to get back after Mumbo,” he said, just as Raven flew by overhead. Cyborg was close behind her, running past Robin and Starfire on the street.

“Come on, ya’ll! We got a whacked out magician to catch!” he shouted back over his shoulder.

Beast Boy, meanwhile, had found himself alone in the pursuit of Mumbo. He knew Robin and Starfire could handle themselves. He was more concerned with his own well being. He changed from the form of the eagle into a cheetah, and continued on foot across the roof, leaping from building to building. Mumbo laughed ahead of him, leaping across gaps in the buildings. Beast Boy was gaining on him.

They came to a large, flat rooftop. Beast Boy was right on Mumbo’s heels. The magician laughed, and leapt wildly to the left. Beast Boy, who had been so focussed on the chase, tried to stop as he skidded towards a wall. He collided with it, and, dazed, shifted back to his human form. He rubbed his head and groaned.

“Uh, who put that wall there?” he mumbled.

Mumbo laughed, and pointed his wand at him. Beast Boy’s eyes widened. “Alakazam!” Mumbo shouted, and more of the magic scarves leapt from the white tipped wand, and began wrapping around the green teen.

“Oh no you don’t!” Beast Boy said, morphing into a Stegadon. The scarves ripped apart. Beast Boy turned, his large tail whipping from behind him. Mumbo had time to say “Oh,” before the green reptilian appendage connected. He staggered backwards, and fell over the edge of the roof.

Raven had just arrived at the scene, and saw Mumbo fall. She also watched as he waved his wand and screamed “Shazam!” A circus net appeared near the ground. Mumbo landed on it, bouncing in to the air, and landed on his feet as the net disappeared. He brushed his left arm, pretending not to notice Raven as he studied his suit’s sleeves.

“The fun stops here,” Raven said, raising her hands.

“The fun never stops!” Mumbo replied, looking directly at her and grinning wildly.

“Azarath, Metreon, Zinthos!” Raven shouted. Two garbage bins were surrounded by black energy, and sent shooting towards Mumbo. He merely waved his wand and said, in a bored voice, “Abracadabra.” The bins abruptly changed into pink roses, which rained down on the mad magician. He laughed, and leapt through a building window just as Robin, Cyborg and Starfire caught up.

“We got him now!” Cyborg said triumphantly. “There’s nowhere for him to go!”

Beast boy dropped from the roof, morphing back to human form as he landed. “Where did that maniacal children’s entertainer go?”

“He’s in there,” Robin pointed behind Beast Boy. “I think that’s a furniture store.”

“Dude! He’s gonna get away!”

“Nah he isn’t,” Cyborg replied. “There’s no way out.”

Beast Boy waved his arms frantically. “He’s a magician! If he gets inside a wardrobe in there, he’ll disappear!”

Robin dived through the smashed window. He looked around frantically as the other Titans followed him in. They ran through the store, searching for the criminal. Beast Boy checked under beds, Raven and Starfire searched wardrobes and cupboards, and Cyborg scanned for movement. They all looked up as they heard a mad laugh from the back of the store. They found Mumbo, standing in front of a freestanding wardrobe, with one foot already inside.

“Stop!” Robin shouted. Mumbo glanced over his shoulder, laughed again, and then stepped quickly into the wardrobe. Robin dived forwards just as the door slammed shut. Within a heartbeat he opened it again, only to be greeted by fading blue smoke. He slammed his fist into the wooden panel, and grimaced as pain shot through his arm.

“Robin!” Starfire said, seeing the pain on his face. “You are injured?”

“I’m fine,” Robin said, grinding his teeth together. He couldn’t believe Mumbo had escaped them again. Why was he giving them so much trouble?

“I don’t think there’s more we can do here,” Cyborg said. “Let’s get back to the tower.”

They had been in Titan’s tower for a couple of hours. Robin was rubbing his shoulder, and looked sourly at the floor. Of all the injuries he had sustained in his crime-fighting life, a pulled muscle was one of the most irritating. He had to be grateful though; it was only his training that had prevented his arm from being broken. His bedroom door slid open, and he saw Starfire silhouetted against the bright lights of the corridor.

“Robin?” she said meekly.

“Yeah, Star?” he said, reverting his gaze to the floor.

“I wish to see if you are ok.”

“I’m fine,” he replied sharply. He looked up again. “I’m sorry Star, but this…injury is just so…” He paused uncomfortably.

“There is no need to explain,” she said, smiling. “I shall apply some Tamaranian acupressure, it will ease the pain.”

Robin sat quietly as Starfire sidled up next to him. She held his hand and gently raised his arm. Robin winced slightly, and Starfire nodded knowingly. She moved her free hand up his arm, resting it on his shoulder. She gave a gentle squeeze, and then applied two fingers to a pressure point on the side of Robin’s neck. A feeling of relaxation washed over the boy wonder as the talented girl worked. She gently rubbed the palm of her hand against the muscle connecting the shoulder to the neck. Starfire then gently pushed his head so that it tilted to the left, away from his injured arm. She put her palm against the top of his shoulder, and gently pushed downwards. All of the pain in Robin’s arm was gone. He sighed contentedly.

“Thank you Starfire,” he said in a gentle voice.

“Shall I leave you now?” she asked.

Robin thought about it briefly, then said, “Perhaps we should make sure it’s completely fixed?”

Starfire looked confused for a moment. “But Tamaranian acupressure can easily…” Realisation dawned on her. “Oh. Yes, perhaps we should.”

She sat next to Robin, and put her head on his shoulder andheld his hand in hers as the bedroom door slid shut.

MEANWHILE:

Cyborg was irritated. He wanted to do something, not be cooped up in the tower and trying to relax. Even here in his workshop he couldn’t concentrate on making any modifications to his creations. Mumbo was still out there, and he needed to be stopped from committing any more crimes. He shook his head as he realised he was starting to think like Robin. He made up his mind. He was going on patrol.

He opened the driver’s door to the T-car. He settled into the seat, and started the engine. Revving the car, Cyborg prepared to leave. He saw the workshop door open, and Raven stepped inside. He wound the window down.

“Yo Raven, I’m going on a quick patrol of the city. Wanna come with?” he asked.

“Ok,” she said simply.

They had been driving around Jump City for a while. It was quiet, everyone still being in the powered side of town. Cyborg checked the car’s scanners.

“Doesn’t look like he’s around,” he said, disappointment creeping into his voice.

Raven looked at a roof nearby. A dark shape caught her eye. “There he is,” she said as a loud cackle resonated across the wide street. Mumbo took off running, extremely fast.

“Hang on!” Cyborg said, slamming his foot down onto the gas. The T-car shot forward at a blistering speed. Cyborg laughed, briefly distracted. “Aw yeah, the acceleration on this baby is awesome!” he said, grinning.

“Keep focussed.”

“Right, yeah.”

They were keeping pace with Mumbo when red and blue lights flashed in the mirror. Cyborg risked a quick glance. “Ah, the cops want to help, huh?” He slowed slightly, and rolled down his window. The police car moved alongside. A young man in uniform looked across at Cyborg. “It’s alright officer!” Cyborg shouted, “We can handle this one!”

“Pull over!” the cop shouted.

Cyborg was too shocked to do anything else. The T-car stopped, the police car parking just in front next to the sidewalk. The young officer got out of the car, a pad and pen in hand. Cyborg looked up at him from his window. He knew it was cliché, but he couldn’t help it. “What seems to be the trouble, officer?”

The cop glared at him. “You realise you were doing 55 in a built up area?” he asked. “Licence and registration, please.”

Cyborg stared at him incredulously. “Uh, you do know I’m Cyborg, right? One of the Teen Titans? Maybe you’ve heard of us?”

“I don’t care who you are,” the cop said. He scribbled something and under his breath said, “first day on the job and I catch some costumed weirdo speeding. What luck.” He loudly repeated, “Licence and registration please.”

Cyborg shifted uncomfortably. “Uh…I must have left them in my other pants,” he said feebly.

The cop leaned slightly in through the window. “You’re not wearing any pants.” The rookie cop scribbled something else down, then handed Cyborg two pieces of paper. “I have no choice but to issue you with a speeding ticket and a fine for indecent exposure in public. Have a nice day.” The cop got back into his car and drove off.

Raven couldn’t hold it in any longer. She burst out laughing, tears in her eyes.

Chapter 5: A Girl Interrupted...

Robin had been sitting in his room with Starfire for an hour. She still had her head on his shoulder, and Robin had draped his arm behind her neck and tilted his head so that it rested on her auburn hair. They were happy, enjoying each other’s company. They needed nothing else, just the warmth and comfort of their embrace. Robin gave Starfire’s shoulder a gentle squeeze, and the girl squirmed slightly, snuggling closer to the object of her affection. Robin smiled, enjoying the feeling of being so close to Star. Her soft breathing washed across his neck, sending a slight tremor down his spine.

Starfire sighed happily. She had wanted this for so long. When she first arrived on Earth, she was confused by the many new customs and ways that humans lived their lives. She was scared, afraid of never fitting in. Then she had met Robin, the first person on the planet to treat her like a friend. He had never shown anything but respect for her and her Tamaranian ways. Even when Starfire made failed attempts at human social behaviour, he had helped her, taught her. But her feelings for him had grown as their friendship became stronger. She sometimes suspected he might care for her too, but he had never given any hints, aside from always seeming to be the one to give her the most help in their fights against crime. But he helped all of the Titans: and yet, somehow, he had always been closer to Starfire than any of the others. She sighed again, her chest feeling light as she allowed herself to finally commit to the feelings she had never dared hope he would reciprocate.

They continued sitting on the end of Robin’s bed, neither saying a word, simply glad to finally be able to enjoy the new-realised truth of their friendship. It had moved on; they were still friends, yet somehow this ritual embrace had made their relationship evolve into something deeper. This was pure; this was beautiful. This was what they wanted.

Robin raised his hand, and gently brushed a strand of hair from Starfire’s eyes. He smiled affectionately down at her, and she smile back. Robin realised at this moment that he had never set eyes on anything more beautiful than this Tamaranian girl he held in his arms. He had always thought she was pretty, but never allowed himself the time to think about her appearance. It had never been appropriate before. But now, in this time, in this place, it was. Robin leant back, pulling Starfire over until they were lying on his bed. She let out a quiet squeak, and then laughed lightly. Her head was next to Robin’s. She turned to look at him as he turned his head to look at her. Starfire looked straight into Robin’s eyes. Robin’s breath was taken as he gazed into two perfect pools of emerald green beauty. He couldn’t bring himself to tear his eyes from hers: to do so would be blasphemous.

Starfire broke the gaze, moving her head. Robin was disappointed briefly, but then Starfire moved her head onto his chest. She pressed her ear against his ribcage, listening to his heartbeat. Her head rose and fell with his steady breathing.

“The beat of your heart is so steady,” she whispered, dragging a hand slowly up his arm. Robin gasped, a slight flutter rising in his chest. Starfire giggled at the reaction she had gained, hearing the brief alteration in his heartbeat and the sudden rise of his chest. Smiling, she looked back at him, holding his attention with her eyes. She moved her head up his torso, pausing at his neck. She looked up again, noting his breathing was now holding at a slightly quickened pace. She continued the slow exploration, her hair dragging lightly across the exposed skin of Robin’s neck. Another shiver went up his spine.

He moved one hand and placed it on Starfire’s back, lightly dragging his fingers up her spine. She gasped, not expecting the gentle touch. Her face was now level with his. Robin was struck by the dazzling effect of Starfire’s hair, hanging past her face, framing her beauty like a portrait. This was so perfect. Everything else had faded; there was only Starfire. There were only the two of them, lost in some dream world. He moved his hand higher up Starfire’s back, resting it just below the back of her neck.

Starfire looked down on Robin. He looked so handsome; she could just stare at him for endless hours. She admired the strong line of his jaw, his sparkling eyes, and the way his strong chest moved up and down with his breathing. She moved her face towards his, bringing the two points of their experience towards a union, a junction of two souls. She felt his breath on her face as it washed over her skin. Mere centimetres separated them. She closed her eyes and, slowly, moved closer, the journey seeming to last for an eternity.

There was a sound. A jingle, a tune. A tone. Starfire looked across at the table beside Robin’s bed. His communicator was glowing as it rang. She had been so close! Why did this have to happen now? In a rage, her eyes shone a brilliant shade of green. Bolts of energy shot at the offending device. It exploded quietly; its sound dying out.

Robin looked across at the smouldering remains of his communicator. He sighed, unhappy with the unfortunate timing. He wished he could just ignore the call, but he knew it was important. Only now he couldn’t answer it. Starfire took one look at his face and realised the moment was gone. She went over every Earth curse she had learned, then, when she ran out, she reverted to Tamaranian ones.

“This is such a glarbok slemer floop!” she said, pure anger in her eyes. Robin would have laughed if he weren’t afraid of his head being blown apart.

“I’m sorry Star,” he said with genuine regret. Starfire sighed, and then moved aside, standing next to Robin’s bed. Robin got up, straightening his gloves and cape. He gave her one final apologetic look, and she replied with a resigned smile. When duty called, you had to answer. Of course, now they had to find another communicator. They left Robin’s room, both quietly disappointed.

They walked together through the corridors of the Tower, heading for the main living area of the Titans. They entered the room, where they round Beast Boy waiting for them. “Dude, where have you been?” he asked Robin. “Cy’s been trying to contact us, but he said you didn’t answer your communicator and then its signal went dead! What happened?”

Robin shot a quick look at Starfire, who flushed a deep red and turned her head, looking intently at the ceiling. “I, uh, was training in my room,” Robin said. “I left the communicator next to an open window. When I went to answer it, I accidentally knocked it out. It must have broken apart when it hit the ground below.” Robin’s face was completely straight.

“Right,” said Beast Boy. “I never pictured you as the clumsy type. Anyway, Cyborg needs us downtown. He’s found Mumbo. Raven’s already with him.” At this point, Beast Boy grinned. “Oh, and he had some trouble with a cop.”

Robin and Starfire were both surprised at this. “Really? What kind of trouble?” they asked in unison, moving towards the door.

Beast Boy could barely contain himself. “He got done for speeding by a rookie cop. And that’s not all; he also got a fine for indecent exposure!” He was laughing openly as they walked through the tower corridors. “Dude, you should have heard him when he called! Even Raven was laughing, although that caused a few fire hydrants to shoot into the air as they followed Mumbo. I think she’s still giggling.”

“Right, enough background,” said Robin, opening the main door. “We need to help them catch Mumbo. Even if we have to help another criminal do it,” he grinned. “Titans, go!”

Starfire giggled as she rose into the air, trying to imagine Raven laughing, which was no easy task. She also thought of Cyborg being pulled over by the police, making her laugh harder. The anger of his untimely interruption had faded. She now had the perfect fuel for revenge. Oh yes, she would have her revenge. And it would be so sweet.

*Eloise laughing hysterically, then remembering that she's in a library* OG!! Fire hydrants shooting up in the air! Cy got pulled over! LOL! Great job. The question is, will you have to put an alert out to those who wear glasses if you have any really steamy scenes. And will Robin take his mask off? Unless I missed something and he already has it off. *Eloise ponders*

Anyway, I like it and look forward to more.

will you have to put an alert out to those who wear glasses if you have any really steamy scenes. And will Robin take his mask off? Unless I missed something and he already has it off. *Eloise ponders*OK, there won't be any "really steamy scenes." Well, not too steamy, since i wear glasses anyway and wouldn't be able to see what I'm writing... Nah, there won't be anything of the indecent or innapropriate kind, since I'd like as many people as possible to enjoy this story. If anyone draws indecency out of what I've written, then that's their interpretation of my work, not what I intended at all. But hey, if that's what you want, go right ahead, just don't accuse me of anything. Altho I'm not sure that's what you meant or not, Blue_Fire. Ah well, serves as information to others.

Oh, and Robin didn't remove his mask. The only thing it covers is his eyes, and I'm working on the assumption that if someone is close enough to his face they can see his eyes behind the mask. You may not agree with that, but it works for my purposes. And what is Robin without his mask anyway?

And thanks for the kind words, EternalShadow. It's nice to know that at least my work is appreciated by a few people!:D

Next chapter is in the works, so sit tight ya'll!

Right, here is the next chapter. Hankies at the ready!

----------------------------------------
Chapter 6: Walk in the Rain (or Show Stopper. I like both titles really)

A walk in the rain
In the rain
Why do I feel so alone?
For some reason I think of Home.

The Seatbelts: Walk in the rain

It had started raining. The first drops of water fell from the sky as Robin, Starfire and Beast Boy entered Jump City. There was a flash and a crack of thunder as the rain fell in larger drops. Even as the group of teen heroes headed towards Main Street they were cold and miserable. The mirth they had felt mere minutes ago was washed away by the storm. Ahead, they heard squealing tires.

Mumbo looked behind him. The car that was chasing him was gaining with every second. No matter how fast he was, this car was faster. He was now close enough to see through the front windscreen. He peered past the moving wipers that brushed water from the glass. He could see Cyborg and Raven, and saw their intense looks of concentration. He looked forwards again. Mumbo gasped and lunged to the left, narrowly avoiding colliding with a giant green elephant. He skidded to one side, and laughed.

“Ah, the Titans. Here for a show?” he asked.

“This ends now, Mumbo!” Robin said, Starfire and Beast Boy stepping up beside him as the T-car screeched to a halt.

“On the contrary, I think this’ll continue for a bit longer!” Mumbo cackled.

“Titans, go!” Robin shouted into damp air.

Beast Boy changed into a tiger, and charged forward. Mumbo removed his hat, and brushed water from the top. Beast Boy, angered by this blatant insult, growled loudly and readied to pounce. Mumbo cackled as the tiger leapt. He grabbed the inside brim of his hat, and stretched it to an impossible size. Beast Boy couldn’t stop himself as he sped into the gaping hole. Mumbo laughed again, and the hat shrank to normal its normal size. He turned it upside down and shook it violently. A dazed, green rabbit emerged, landing on the floor with a wet thud.

“Beast Boy!” Cyborg shouted. “Right you whacked out magic man, time to say good night!” Cyborg’s arm clicked, and the sonic cannon appeared. He fired a blast of energy at the black-clad mad man. Mumbo laughed, and shouted “Shazam!” A mirror appeared on front of him. The energy bounced off the reflective surface, straight back at Cyborg. It connected, sending the half mechanical teen flying across the street. He collided with a wall, and fell forwards. He rubbed his head. “How’d he do that?”

“Azarath, Metreon, Zinthos!” Raven chanted. Black energy encased her hands. With a circular motion, she stirred the rainwater that had gathered on the street into one solid mass of black liquid. She thrust her hands forward, and the swirling mass crashed towards Mumbo.

“Alakazam!” He said, stabbing his wand forwards. A clear glass container encased the water, and Raven found herself inside. She floated inside, chains surrounding her body. She struggled, attempting to break free of the metal trap. She opened her mouth to say the words that gave her power, but water simply rushed in, blocking of any sound. Raven sank to the bottom of the tank, still struggling. Her lungs burned as her air ran out. Bubbles streamed from her mouth as she tried to maintain calm. Darkness crept into the edges of her vision. Robin ran to the side of the watery prison, and pummelled the glass. He couldn’t break it. He looked at Mumbo, who grinned back.

Robin ran towards him, bent forwards and intent on wiping the smile from the villain’s face. Mumbo levelled his wand at him and shouted “Abracadabra!” blue fog rolled towards Robin, but he was ready. He leapt into the air, over the smoke, and landed in front of Mumbo. He punched the magician in the gut. Mumbo doubled over, but Robin wasn’t done. He turned sharply, bringing his foot into contact with Mumbo’s head. Mumbo span through the air, and landed some way down the street with a squelch. Robin turned back to Raven’s glass prison, and ran to help Starfire try to break her out. The glass abruptly disappeared, and the resulting waves of water forced Starfire backwards. Raven collapsed to the floor, a pool collecting around her. She coughed sharply, spitting water onto the street.

“Raven, are you alright?” Starfire asked.

“I’m fine,” she replied, trying to stand. Starfire hooked a hand under her arm, helping her up. Raven shook her arm free. “Thanks,” she said, turning back to Mumbo.

Cyborg ran forwards, aiming for the downed conjurer. Mumbo pushed himself off the ground, and stood upright. He rubbed the side of his face, wincing. Noticing the ever-nearing mechanical monster heading for him with great speed, Mumbo twirled, waving his wand. A wire appeared, stringing itself between two lampposts. Cyborg tripped, falling flat on his face and sliding along the asphalt with a grinding noise. He stopped at Mumbo’s feet and groaned. Mumbo cackled, placing one foot on Cyborg’s back and posing victoriously.

Beast Boy was dazed. He could feel his fur getting damp as large droplets of water fell from the sky He looked up, seeing a giant Robin towering over him. He heard him say something, but couldn’t understand the words. He morphed back to human form. “Dude, what did you say?”

“I asked if you were alright.”

“Oh, yeah, I’m fine. I’ve always wanted to be a magician’s assistant,” Beast Boy quipped.

Starfire rose into the air, her eyes glowing green. She flew towards Mumbo, intent on stopping this madness. Mumbo saw her coming. He waved the wand, looking straight at the Tamaranian coming towards him. “Shazam!” he said. A large, brightly decorated cupboard appeared in mid-air, door hanging open. Starfire squeaked, flying straight into it. The cupboard door snapped shut, before dropping to the ground with a wet thud. Mumbo cackled. Robin turned, and watched in horror as the mad magician tapped his wand against the wooden edge.

“Hocus Pocus,” he said clearly at the same time as a streak of natural electricity crashed into the box. There was a scream from inside the cupboard. Blue smoke seeped out from the door edges. Mumbo moved smoothly across, and opened the door.

It was empty. Starfire had vanished. The Titans stared, aghast, as Mumbo started to laugh. There was a flash of lightning, and the Titans then saw Robin dive towards Mumbo. He drew his fist back, rainwater dripping from his knuckles. He threw his arm forwards with all the strength he could muster. His fist collided straight into Mumbo’s face. The magician cried out as he fell backwards, his right arm bending behind him. As he hit the floor, his weight was entirely focussed on his one hand for a brief moment. There was a loud snap, and splinters of wood flew out from underneath the fallen magician.

There was another flash of lightning. In Mumbo’s place was a cowering, whimpering man. He was balding, his remaining hair a pale white. His long nose was bleeding. Robin stood over him, fists still clenched. He reached down, and grabbed the frightened man by his collar.

“Where is Starfire?” he asked, ice creeping into his voice as he lifted the terrified mass from the floor. The man didn’t reply, and Robin asked more forcefully through clenched teeth, “Where is she?”

“I…I…I don’t know!” the man stammered. “M…m…my wand is broken, so the spell should have warn off, but the…the…the lightning hit the magic box at the same time I cast the spell! She could be anywhere!”

Robin’s eyes widened. His grip on the trembling man loosened, and he dropped to the floor, still cowering. Robin fell to his knees, and planted his hands on the cold, wet ground. The rain fell harder as thunder boomed across the sky. Cold droplets of water dripped down Robin’s back. He didn’t care. Mumbo was whimpering next to him. But he didn’t care. Starfire was gone. He was empty, desolate, inconsolable. Nothing mattered now. Robin choked back a sob, his shoulders shaking. He brought his arm above his head, and smashed it into the ground. Water splashed up, hitting the front of his uniform. Robin wrenched himself backwards, and stared straight up into the falling water, which mingled with the tears that fell openly down his face.

“STARFIRE!” he screamed.

The rain continued to fall as his cry went unanswered.

My thanks go out to all my supporters and my fans. I'd like to thank my mom *sniff* and my dad for bringing me into this world. I'd like to thank myself for being so damned good at this! :D

OK, being a bit big headed there. But seriously, thanks for the support, it means alot to me, and it's nice to see such friendly people on a board that will support other writers and their work. Pressurecooker in particular, since I am so much in awe of your work, your praise is highly regarded. Starfire5, you've been invaluable for running my ideas past. And to everyone else, thank you.

This sounds like a farewell speech, but it isn't. This story shall continue for as long as I can keep up the pace. This next chapter will probably lose me most of my support, but it is needed for what will happen in the next chapter. Again, hankies at the ready, we're going in!

Chapter 7: Tensions

The rain fell in torrents. Robin was still kneeling on the ground, punching the asphalt over and over again. His cries of anguish echoed across the street, doubling in volume. Lightning flashed, illuminating the face of pain incarnate. Robin screamed his fury at the sky, venting his sorrow and anger. He could have saved her. Why couldn’t he save her? Or why didn’t he? Robin’s tormented mind ran through the scene over and over again. Starfire, a large magician’s box, the lightning. Robin screamed again, daring the lightning to take him as well. He knew it was irrational, but he didn’t care. He wanted an outlet for his rage, and screaming wasn’t enough. Punching the ground didn’t help. He needed a live victim.

Mumbo. It was his fault. That snivelling mad man. He deserved anything that was coming to him. Robin turned, his eyes focussing on the cowering heap of what was once a powerful villain. Robin’s eyes blazed with a fury unseen in Jump City. Mumbo risked a glance upwards, and shrieked. Robin moved towards him.

“You!” he hollered, straining to be heard over the storm. “It was your fault! You took her from me!” Robin stretched a hand forwards.

“Dude, back off!” Beast Boy stood in his way, arms stretched out.

“Out of my way!” Robin snarled.

Beast Boy shook his head. “No way, not until you’ve stopped going all psycho.” The green hero grabbed Robin’s extended arm.

“I SAID OUT OF MY WAY!” Robin yelled, hurling Beast Boy across the street. He landed with a thud, his head smacking hard against the concrete pavement.

Cyborg grabbed Robin from behind, holding his arms tight behind the boy wonder. Robin struggled and growled like a trapped animal, thrashing and trying to break free. “Let me go! He has to pay!”

“Robin, this won’t help!” Cyborg said. “This will only make things worse.”

“It’ll make me feel a hell of a lot better!” Robin retorted.

“Maybe for about ten minutes, but what then? What if you beat this guy to a pulp? You think you’ll feel good about it later? You want everyone to think of one of the world’s great heroes as a common bully?” Robin calmed a bit, but was still struggling. Cyborg pulled out the big guns. “You think Starfire would want this?”

Robin froze, the energy draining from his body. What was he doing? He couldn’t take out his anger on his friends. Starfire’s gone. He shouldn’t even take it out on his enemies, no matter how much they deserved it. Starfire’s gone. No, deserve wasn’t right. Nothing was right. Starfire’s gone. But that shouldn’t mean he could lose his grip, right? Starfire’s gone. She’s gone, and you didn’t do anything to save her!

Robin was overcome. His mind, completely divided by the conflicting emotions of anger, fear, hatred and loss, gave up its narrow control. His emotional state collapsed into chaos, a whirling maelstrom of conscious thought. He broke down, reduced to sobs that racked his whole body. He didn’t want to do this, not in front of everyone. But he had no control.

Cyborg relaxed his grip slightly, but continued to hold Robin upright. He looked over at Raven, who had run over to the downed Beast Boy. “He ok?”

“He’s fine,” she replied. “No thanks to the boy blunder over there.” Cyborg noticed an all-too familiar red glow in her eyes. It was barely visible, but it was there.

“Rae, don’t you lose it or I’ll have to restrain you to!”

“You think you could?” she challenged, the edge of steel in her voice.

“Frankly no, but I’d try to anyway. Enough damage has been done today, and I’m really not wanting it to go further!” Raven still had a look of suppressed fury on her face. Cyborg sighed. “Raven, please. I’m asking you. Take Beast Boy and we’ll head back to the Tower and figure out a way to get Star back.”

Raven calmed, regaining her composure. It was a struggle, but she’d beaten the rage of her father before. She calmed her anger at Mumbo for making her friend disappear. She cleansed herself of the rage at Robin for hurting Beast Boy. And she was surprised at having to quell the feeling at Cyborg’s words. It wasn’t anger or fury. It was something she seldom ever felt.

They left Mumbo where he was, a quivering heap of fear. He lay in the falling rain, muttering, his eyes squeezed tightly shut. The police were already on their way for him. They would make sure he saw true justice.

It was white. With flashing green lines spiralling downwards for what seemed eternity. Between the spirals were images, moving pictures of life and action. She floated in one place, looking around. There were many of the living pictures, but no two were the same. They were all different, yet similar. The same, but not. She shook her head, not making sense of what she saw.

She moved closer to one image, moving effortlessly through this spiralling void. She peered closely at the picture, watching as the play unfolded before her. There was a man, dressed in a black suit, with his back to her. She couldn’t see his face, but he seemed…familiar. Something about his hair, something in his posture she could recognise. He was standing in front of what looked like a small table covered with a white cloth. Another man stood before the first, dressed in a robe and clasping a black book in one hand. There was the sound of a large door opening, a loud creak that could be heard even in the spiral. The first man turned, and she gasped. His sparkling eyes, his strong jaw, the strong chest. She knew him. She called to him, but he ignored her. She looked to where the man was focussed, and saw a tall figure walking towards him slowly. She couldn’t see the face as the figure was completely covered in white, from head to toe. The man smiled when he saw her, a broad grin plastering his face. The girl in the spiral felt warmth flood her body at his smile. She wanted to reach out to him, to take him in her arms, but she couldn’t.

The figure in white reached the man in black, taking up a position next to him. The older man in front of the table said something, but she couldn’t hear him. His voice was quiet and soft. No matter how much she strained, she couldn’t hear his words. She then watched as the handsome younger man reached towards the figure in white, and placed his hands either side of the white cloth that covered the face. He lifted the cloth. She gasped as she saw another face that was so familiar. Brilliant, emerald green eyes gazed at the young man with adoration, and long auburn hair fell to the sides of her face. They looked at each other, pure love emanating from their beings. Then, the woman in white spoke.

“I, Starfire, take thee, Robin…”

“I, Starfire, take thee, Robin…”Awww... *PressureCooker promptly opens a box and hands out warm fuzzies to all the readers* How sweet!

The way you describe the feelings and thoughts can only be described as magic  . Robin would have soo beat the tar out of old Mumbo if Cyborg haden't steped in. Real good interaction with the characters at that tense moment and only one thing would have made it better... Acrobatic pizza:anime:

Pressurecooker and EternalShadow, thank you so much for your kind words. The last couple days have made story writing real difficult (i have to reinstal the network software on 280 computers, and it takes about 2 hours per computer:( ) I wrote that chapter last night after work, and i was absolutely exhausted, so i thought the chapter would be below par, but I'm glad that you both think it was good.

Don't get too used to the warm fuzzies, there will be some nasty twists up ahead. Things that will really torment our young heroes. And Starfire is going to go through her own personal hell. Then heaven. Then back to hell again. Mwahahahaaaa!

Oh, and don't worry, the acrobatic pizza will return. You think a little fall from the top of a giant T would stop something as invincible as the living pizza? He shall return, and it will make you laugh (i hope)

Expect a new chapter within the next 2 days. It is on the way, just bear with me for a bit.

OK then, here's the next chapter. The previous chapter seemed to go down well, so it is a tough act to follow. I just hope that this one provides you, the reader, with some entertainment for the next few minutes. Once again, comments and feedback is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Vanishing Act Chapter 8: Divided

Titan’s Tower was silent. There was no breeze in the air, no sound of the waves on the rocky shore of the island, no cry of birds searching for a harbour in the storm. There was no thunder, no rain, just a lifeless grey pallor to the sky. It was as if the whole world was in mourning.

The Titan’s living room was dark. None of the lights had been switched on. Somehow it wouldn’t have felt right if they were. Cyborg entered the room, the door sliding shut soundlessly behind him. He clumped through the room, and collapsed on one of the large sofas. But not even the soft comfort of a warm seat could calm his mind. The other remaining Titans were all in varying stages of shock. Cyborg had taken Robin to his room and watched as the troubled teen simply crawled into his bed.

Raven and Beast Boy entered the room. Raven held Beast Boy’s arm, helping him towards a seat. He flopped down, not saying a word, holding a damp cloth to his head. He gazed at the floor, his usual smile not even daring to enter this dismal place. Raven looked more severe than usual. There was a stoop to her posture, a slump in her shoulders. Barely visible, but it was there.

None of them wanted to be the first to speak. They sat in silence, avoiding each other’s eyes. There didn’t seem to be anything worth saying. No words could make an impact on what had happened.

And it had happened. None of them had dreamt it, they hadn’t imagined it. It had really happened. One of them was gone. They didn’t know where, they weren’t even sure how. They just knew: Starfire, the newcomer to Earth, the most cheerful of their friends, was gone. And now her absence was sorely felt. No joyous outbursts, no Tamaranian traditions, no Starfire.

Raven cleared her throat. “How is Robin?”

“To be honest, I don’t know,” Cyborg said. “When I left him in his room, he just slunk to his bed and lay there, without making a sound. He didn’t even notice I was there, he just kept staring at a single spot on his bed.”

Beast Boy looked up. “When you called earlier, I think they were together,” he said. There was no trace of humour in his voice; it wouldn’t have been Right.

“Robin and Starfire?” Cyborg asked.

“Yeah. Starfire was blushing and Robin made some excuse about knocking his communicator out a window.”

Raven sighed. “No wonder he reacted the way he did.”

“Yeah. Those two have…had… been getting so close lately.” Cyborg paused, swallowing past a lump in his throat, and continued. “The one time he really opens up and lets someone in, and she’s taken away.”

They stared at each other for a while, then all turned their gazes elsewhere, no one wanting to hold the looks of the others. Beast Boy turned the damp cloth over, wincing as he laid it back on the lump on his head. Raven closed her eyes, trying desperately hard not to cry. Cyborg had to be strong. With Robin so psychologically incapacitated, Cyborg was second in command. He needed to be strong, not for himself, but for the team.

What was left of it.

He spoke up again, still staring straight down. “I checked some military satellites,” he said, fighting the rising urge to throw the table through the wall. “I scanned the entire planet for a trace of Starfire.”

Raven and Beast Boy looked up. They didn’t need to say the question that had formed in their minds.

Cyborg sighed. He knew what their reaction would be when he told them. “I…I found a faint trace of Starfire’s energy, about 10 miles south of the city.”

Beast Boy and Raven’s looks turned to glares.

“Why the hell didn’t you tell us?” Beast Boy shouted.

“You found out where she was and didn’t say anything?” Raven growled. A cupboard door banged open.

Cyborg looked back at them. “I didn’t want to say anything because I didn’t want to get your hopes up. You have to understand; the signal is so faint that there are two possibilities. First, she is trapped underground; I really don’t think that’s a possibility since there are no caves underneath the surface out there.” He paused, unwilling to continue.

“And what’s the second option?” Raven asked.

Cyborg turned away from them, his voice dropping to barely a whisper. “She’s close to dying,” he said.

Beast Boy covered his face with his hands, muffling his strained gasps. Raven’s eyes shut tight, but no matter how hard she tried, a single tear still traced a curving pattern down her cheek. Cyborg, still with his back to his tormented friends, bit his lip, straining not to show his own hurt. The lump in his throat was solid, and he found it difficult to speak again.

“Don’t tell Robin,” he said. “We have to be sure first.”

The other two simply nodded mutely. If they told their leader anything now, he could completely snap.
*************

Robin was staring at the spot where he and Starfire had lain together less than 2 hours ago when he heard the shouting. His eyes had been completely dry. Tears didn’t seem to be enough, somehow. He wanted them to come, now he was alone, but they wouldn’t. Nothing would be enough now. He had finally admitted to himself how he had felt about the Tamaranian girl. For a long time he had refused to believe his emotions, afraid of admitting they were real. If he let anyone get close enough to him, he was sure to lose them.

But Starfire had gotten close to him. She had entered his life, made him feel good about himself. She had taught him things about friendship and teamwork. More importantly, she had taught him to open up to others. He had; he had opened up to Starfire. He choked back a sob as he thought of how many times he had wanted to be with her, but always held back from fear. And now, now he had been together with her, had felt something that felt too good to be true, she was gone.

The shouts had echoed down the corridor. Robin, unthinking, had stood. He walked through his doors, and down the dark corridor. His friends might be fighting in their grief. He knew they shouldn’t be, but his mind was still reeling from shock. He couldn’t think properly, but he continued moving towards the voices.

He had reached the door to the Titan’s living area. The door had slid open silently. His three friends didn’t seem to notice him, too tied up in what they were discussing. Robin listened as Cyborg, his back turned to the door, spoke in a voice barely above a whisper.

“She’s close to dying,” he’d said.

And now Robin was in the gym, punching and kicking a bag suspended from a beam. He blindly struck wildly, the stuffed object swinging and creaking from the blows. He was angry. He was angry at Mumbo for making her disappear. He was angry at his friends for not telling him the truth. He was angry at the world for allowing something like this to happen.

He was angry with himself for letting himself get attached.

How could he think something like that?

“NGAAAAAAHHHH!”

He screamed as he swung his fist forwards with all his strength. The bag exploded on impact, sand showering across the floor. Robin fell forwards, letting his body hit the floor. He panted from the exertion. Sweat poured from his face, masking the tears that only now would flow again. He cried into the floor, feeling the gaping hole in his heart that had been so recently filled.

“Never again,” he sobbed, squeezing his eyes shut. “Never again.”

*****************************

The scene continued to play out. The old man in robes had said something and smiled, and the older Robin and Starfire had kissed, before walking hand in hand back down the aisle to a waiting car. They got in, Robin helping his new bride into the seat. He had followed her in, and immediately placed his arm around her shoulders, kissing her on the cheek. The Starfire in the car had immediately turned towards him and moved to his face, meeting his waiting lips.

The Starfire watching the scene sighed happily. This was a happy ending. She watched as the car pulled away, and could see through the rear window the happy couple still locked in each other’s embrace. Starfire knew she wasn’t in the real world, or at least the world she had thought of as real. But now that she was here, in this spiral, wasn’t this her reality? She wondered if what her mother had told her was true; had she gone to the afterlife? She had done as she had been told: she used her powers to help those who needed it, she had acted with courage and bravery to save countless lives. And now, maybe she had died, and been sent to this spiral within reality.

There was a catch in her throat as she thought of the Robin in her reality. She had left him when they had finally realised their feelings for each other. A pang of sorrow went through her, but was immediately evaporated in the infinite white space: emotions didn’t last for long here. The size was just too large for anything to last more than a few minutes. She knew she should feel sad, but now there was only a trace of gloom which haunted her mind.

She looked back up, straight into her own eyes. She gasped, briefly taken aback. She wondered if she was watching another scene from the wedding. Perhaps the honeymoon? She giggled, but the sound was drowned out by suffocating silence. She watched intensely as her view panned out. She saw herself, younger than in her married reality, standing on top of a brown boulder. She was wearing a tight fitting grey body suit. It was completely grey, save for the right arm and left leg, which were black. She watched as her grey-self laughed, her eyes glowing green. A star bolt flew from her grey-self’s outstretched hands, impacting somewhere just out of her view. Grey-self laughed again, placing her hands on her hips. Starfire watched as the view shifted. She gasped in horror.

Cyborg was lying on the ground, motionless. His cybernetic components had lost their live blue: they were now a lifeless, charred black. Raven lay on top of him, not moving. Her eyes were wide open, her mouth locked in a grimace of agony. Beast Boy, too, lay nearby, stuck somewhere in a transformation between a tiger and a spider, the result being too horrific to look at. Starfire averted her eyes, only to be greeted by a sight that horrified her to the core.

“Robin!” she cried, looking at his broken form that lay amongst a group of jagged rocks. His bo-staff lay shattered on the ground, surrounded by shards of bird-a-rang.

Grey-self had a smile upon her face as she looked at what she had done. A gloved hand was placed on her shoulder. His face was hidden behind an orange and black mask: only one eye could be seen. He spoke.

“Well done, my apprentice.”

Starfire screamed.

Excellent job Lord Welshi! =DWell, why do you think I'm LORD Welshi, hmm? Cos I am that good! That's right, uh huh, awwwww yeah!

*ahem* don't worry, my loyal fans, the story shall be completed, i promise you. But as I have said before, things at work have become really hectic. I've been there 3 days and all I've managed to do is install 20 computers to the college network, then have to update all of their software, then try to invade staff offices and fix their computers, then realise their computers aren't really good enough to be compatable with the network in the first place.......it's really tough. BUT my creativity is still with me, so expect the next installment sooooon (altho soon ranges anywhere from later today to some point this weekend, depending on how long i stay awake....)

And thanks go out to Kylewayne, Sunrise and Blue_Fire for their lovely comments. It's people like you who make this all worth while (altho my brain tells me it's not worth it....too...many...pixels!!!!)

Oh yes, and in reply to Sunfire's comment on Robin being Dick Grayson...personally, I agree with this theory (Larry the titan's name being Dick Grayson backwards and all), but there are some who think he is Tim Drake, and even a few who think he mught be someone called Jason Todd (i've been out of the batman loop for a while...). So, to avoid evil hatered from all parties, i have simply decided Robin is "Robin," his own person rather than the others. Makes things a hell of a lot eeasier because I won't have to argue with anyone about his identity.

Oh and FYI: Ellen is my friends character who is a psychotic murderess, who's methods will occasionally leave the person alive after torturing and tormenting the person until they wished they were dead. But then she gives them no escape.

Chapter 9: Roadtrip/A Meal to Remember

The storm that had once raged so fiercely over Jump City had stilled. That lack of crashing thunder and flashing lightning was somehow unsettling. The lack of sound in the crisp air made the tension seem unbearable. There was no distraction from the silence, no diversion from the raw emotions. Thoughts were drowned by feelings of depression and sorrow. It was the quietest, and saddest, journey the T-car had ever made.

The Titans were seated inside Cyborg’s custom vehicle. No one wanted to make this journey. If they were right, they would soon see one of their friends, lying in some desolate open plain, clinging to life with her last breath. And it was likely that they were right.

Raven and Cyborg rode up front. Cyborg drove in silence, his foot pushing the gas pedal flat against the floor. Intensity poured from his very being as he drove: he concentrated on the driving. He thought he would break down if he didn’t have this one task occupying his mind, holding his attention. But, with each quiet tick from the mile meter, and each blip from his sensors, he knew he was taking his teammates somewhere they did not want to go.

So why was he taking them there at all?

Raven had had many years of intense training to keep her emotions under control. Since she was a young girl, she knew there was something…odd about her. Things smashing or breaking always followed temper tantrums: objects shooting into the air, often never to be seen again, accompanied laughter. But she had learned to control all of that. Emotions, she told herself, were merely a distraction, and wasted space on the conscious mind. She would not allow herself to let her powers rage uncontrollably. She would eradicate her emotions, bury them deep within herself, and forget how to feel. It would make things easier.

Then why didn’t she want to?

Beast Boy just held his face in his hands, not daring to speak, not wanting to move. He sat, slumped over, his body straining against the seatbelt as it took his weight. His breathing was ragged, rasping between his fingers. He couldn’t think of anything that would make him feel better, so he tried not to think at all.

Why was his brain working so damn fast?

Robin sat in silence, staring out of the window. It was strange, but now that he’d accepted what Cyborg had said, things felt…easier. He couldn’t think of a better way of describing it. Lighter, maybe? The realisation that Starfire may be near the end of her brief life had given him some sense of closure. But he still had a hole, deep inside, that longed for her touch, for her embrace. He shut his eyes, remembering her smile, her eyes, and her hair. Her. A trickle of water flowed down the window in front of his face. He looked up, expecting to see rain, but there was none.

The car stopped. Cyborg breathed in, and cleared his throat.

“We’re here.”

The Titans got out of the car. The doors creaked open, sounds of distress that echoed across the open field. They stood, not knowing where they should begin. They split up, moving away from the T-car, searching for some sign of their friend. Beast Boy changed into a large dog, and sniffed the ground, searching for a scent. Raven closed her eyes, and tried to focus on Starfire’s thoughts. Cyborg’s infrared scanners searched for boy heat. Robin used his eyes.

And his heart.

He found her, lying on the cold, damp ground. The grass around her had been burned to cinders. Starfire herself was breathing shallowly. Robin placed his head against her chest. He heart was barely beating. He looked across, seeing the terrible burns on her arm. He patted the side of her face, asking, begging her to wake up. Her eyes remained closed. If not for her burns, she could have been asleep. Robin looked up, and called out to the other Titans, alerting them to Starfire’s location.

Raven had levitated Starfire into the back of the car. She lay across the seats, her head resting in Robin’s lap. Cyborg and Raven had gotten back into the front seats. Beast Boy had morphed into a field mouse and sat on the dashboard, taking up as little room as possible. The three of them knew to leave Starfire and Robin alone. Robin needed to adjust, to comfort Starfire. It seemed she was in a coma: not dead, but not consciously alive. Perhaps the coma was worse: they now had to deal with the fact that she was alive, but may never wake up. Her condition seemed so hopeless; all they could do now was get her back to Titan’s Tower and make her comfortable.

Robin held one of her hands in his, his other hand gently, soothingly, stroking Starfire’s hair. He looked down at her. She seemed so peaceful, so quiet. Robin smile d gently as fresh tears curled down his face. He whispered to her.

“I’m so sorry, Star,” he choked. “You’ll be ok. I promise.” He gave her hand a gentle squeeze. “Please, be ok, Starfire.”

“Starfire!” a voice called.

Starfire sat in mid air, knees up to her chin, with folded arms hiding her face. She did not want to see more pain. No more hurt, no more death. She wanted to curl up into a ball and sleep, never to awaken to the horrors of this terrible place. She had watched as Grey-self attacked and destroyed her friends, and could only shriek in dismay as Slade took Grey-self and proceeded to conquer Jump City. Starfire couldn’t watch anymore. She hugged her knees tighter to herself.

“Starfire!” the voice called again. It wasn’t Slade. This voice was soothing, calm, different. Familiar. Starfire looked up, not daring to hope. She laughed when she saw Robin’s face. She moved closer to the edge of the ‘viewing shape,’ as she had called them. She watched as Robin, on the street just below her angle, ran towards another Starfire. They seemed older, though slightly younger than in the marriage reality. The Starfire on the street was dressed in a flowing blue dress. It had a strapless top, which flowed seamlessly down to her legs, stopping just above her ankles. Blue-Star looked at the Robin that was dressed in a deep blue suit with black shoes. Blue-Star harrumphed and turned her head. Robin stopped next to her, panting heavily.

“Sorry…I’m…late!” he huffed. “Had to…stop…bank robbers!”

Blue-Star tapped her foot. “Well, I’m glad I know where your priorities lie!”

Robin spluttered, and held his hands out in a pleading gesture. “But I had to….”

Blue-Star laughed, turning and hugging Robin. “Do not be worried, I am only teasing!”

Robin sighed in relief. He hooked his arm through Blue Star’s. “Shall we?” he said, leading her into the building behind them. Starfire watched as the view changed, switching to an inside view of what appeared to be an expensive restaurant. The plush carpets matched the red curtains. Roses stood in vases on each of the tables. Couples gazed across the surfaces into each other’s eyes. There was the occasional exhale of happiness and content from different tables. The view zoomed towards Blue-Star and Robin.

Robin was looking nervous.

“Robin, why are you so…shifty, if that is the right term?” Starfire asked.

“Uh… no real reason?” he half asked back. Blue-Star squinted at him slightly, and then flicked her hair.

“Very well. Shall we order something to eat?”

“Um…Star? Before we start, there’s something I have to ask you.” Robin again looked very nervous. “We’ve known each other for about seven years, right?”

“That is correct. Shall we eat now?”

Robin laughed nervously. “That’s not the real question. Look, Starfire, we’ve been together for quite some time…”

“Am I not good enough anymore?” Blue-Star asked, panic creeping into her voice.

“No! I mean yes! I mean, that’s not what I mean!” Robin sighed, moving out from his seat. He walked around the table to stand beside Blue-Star. He gulped. “This is what I want to ask you,” he said as he began to kneel in front of her. Both Starfire and Blue-Star gasped, Blue-Star putting one hand to her mouth.

“Robin, what are you…oh!”

Robin had reached inside his coat pocket and pulled out a small, black box. He opened the lid, revealing a sparkling gold band with a glittering stone set into the top. He breathed deeply, taking her free hand in his.

“Starfire,” Robin gulped again, his thoat suddenly dry. “Will you marry me?”

*snicker* I'll give you the same feedback I've been recieving on my story: Just kiss her! That'll get her heart beating faster for sure. A little jolt. (except in my story it's him, but hey.):D

Oh, and Robin. If it makes you feel better: shred something. Preferably with your bare hands. Or go out and fight that acrobatic pizza. That would also be hysterical.:D

Wow. I am honoured to have a chant for my creative work! Really, I mean it's so....cool! My work has never been in this much demand before. Granted, my previous work never lasted beyond 2 chapters before. The next chapter is below. As for the Acrobatic Pizza...well, he shall return. I am placing copyright on him. He is now a registered character to Lord Welshi, mwahahahahaaaaa!

Oh, a warning for next week. I am going to stay with a friend for a week at the opposite end of the country. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem for my story, but as it is his internet connection has fudged, so i might not be able to post for a while. But do not lose hope, I will continue to write this story when I get back! In the meantime, I hope this little chapter will tide you over til then.

Chapter 10: Rumours and Revelations/ Perfect Proposal

The sky was still a dull grey. It hadn’t changed in hours: no sign of sunshine, no break in the clouds: just a canvas of grey, blocking the light from the world. The wind had picked up, howling across Jump City, a constant scream of torment. It was as if the city itself were in pain. Though power had been restored, though stolen items had been returned, though chaos and disorder were held at bay for at least one more day, something was wrong. The streets were empty, all the people preferring to sit inside their homes, basking in comforting warmth rather than face the possible threat of rain again. Rain dampened spirits, and spirits were low enough already. But rain also served another purpose.

It washed away the stains of yesterday.

Though it had not been long since Mumbo’s mad reign of terror on the city, the people were already beginning to forget. Things like this often happened. There were always villains causing trouble, always criminals to be caught, always evil to be stopped. They always needed saving. There was always the Teen Titans. They were safe.

But rumour had flown across the city. Though no one but the Titans had witnessed it, the events of the previous day filtered through the body of people. No one was outside: but they all heard about it, one way or another. Phones, emails, even the news.

“…and in local news, it is reported that a member of the crime-fighting team the Teen Titans has been killed. Though reports are sketchy at best, it is believed that the Titan known as Starfire was fatally injured in a battle with Mumbo. When police arrived on the scene, the Titans had already left. However, Mumbo himself was on the verge of a panic attack, apparently begging for mercy and apologising for the damage he had done. Investigators say…”

“Turn it off,” Robin mumbled, not bothering to raise his head.

Cyborg got up from his seat, and walked over to the television mounted on the wall. He pressed the power button. An image of a shaking Mumbo faded from view before it switched off.

They had been sitting in this small room for hours. Starfire had been laid on the small bed. Her right arm was bandaged and propped against her chest, covering the small sensor pad that was connected to the constantly beeping heart monitor. Her eyes were closed, her breathing was shallow, her pulse weak. Robin looked up every time the heart monitor’s tone changed, afraid Starfire’s heart might stop. Each time he had sighed in relief when it dropped to normal. He moved his hand towards the one on her chest. Gently, he cupped his fingers under her palm, and gave soft squeeze.

“Wouldn’t it have been better if we had left her at the hospital?” Cyborg asked.

“No, you heard what they said. They don’t know enough about Tamaranian physiology to know what could help her, or what could kill her.” Robin swallowed past the lump in his throat. “It’s better that she’s here, with her friends. It’s better that she’s comfortable.”

Cyborg nodded mutely. He knew Robin only had Starfire’s well being in mind. He sat down again, slumping in his seat. He looked at Robin’s haggard face. He couldn’t have slept more than an hour in the last two days.

“Man, you need to get some rest. Why not…”

“No!” Robin realised his voice had turned harsh. He breathed deeply. “Sorry, Cyborg. No. I’m staying here.”

Cyborg simply nodded again. The door to the small, dark room opened, and Raven entered.

“Any change?” she asked.

“No,” Robin said. “She’s still sleeping.” He couldn’t bring himself to say the word ‘coma,’ it was a word that grated in his mind and made him want to jump out the window. He wanted to scream, to hit something, but he wasn’t going to leave Starfire. Not now. Not ever.

Raven looked at Cyborg. Cyborg shrugged back, standing up again. He walked towards the door, stepping out into the hallway with Raven. The door slid shut quietly.

“He’s exhausted,” Raven said.

“I know,” Cyborg replied, “but do you really want to be the one to pry him away from her side now?”

Raven shook her head. “He needs to be with her.” She turned her head away from Cyborg before continuing. “It’s…good to see him care for someone so much.”

“Yeah. Shame it had to be in these circumstances.”

Raven looked back briefly, meeting Cyborg’s eyes. She turned her head again, looking down slightly. Cyborg knew something was on her mind.

“What’s up Rae?”

“Nothing, really,” she replied.

“If you’re sure,” Cyborg said. “You know, if you ever need to talk, I’ll always listen.” He turned and walked down the corridor, yawning as he went. Raven stared after him. A chair bumped into her leg. She moved aside as it floated a little way down the corridor.

“Down,” she said. The chair gently dropped to the floor, not moving an inch. Raven sighed and, turning around, walked back to her room. She needed to meditate.

Robin still sat next to Starfire. He still held her hand, still squeezed lightly. He had been so afraid that he’d lost her, so soon after allowing himself to realise the true feelings he had for the beautiful Tamaranian. When Mumbo had made her vanish, it was like his world had fallen apart. He had felt it crack and shatter, collapsing around him. It had fallen apart to lie in the streets amongst the rain-made puddles. But now he had found her again, and it was almost as bad. Because she was alive: she was breathing, her heart was beating, but she wasn’t awake. And there was nothing Robin could do to wake her up, except try talking to her.

“I remember when you first arrived here,” he said, smiling as the memory flooded his mind. “You were so nervous, but so polite. You introduced yourself to everyone you met, and shocked so many people when you flew up to say hi!” he half laughed. “Who knows what would have happened if you hadn’t introduced yourself to me. You know, when I first spoke to you, I knew there was something about you. The way you acted, the way you…well, everything really. The little things. I’ve never met someone that I liked right away,” he admitted to her. “I usually judge people too soon, and it’s never good. When I first met Cyborg, I thought ‘strength mad muscle-man,’ with Beast Boy I thought he was just a childish prankster who was irritating, and Raven was just a boring weird girl with no emotions. But it was different with you.” He sighed, his heart suddenly weighing heavy in his chest. “There’s something I should have told you a while ago now, but I never thought I was being…realistic, I suppose. It wasn’t quite…right. I don’t know.” He sighed again. “I guess I’m not too good at this. See, what I’m trying to tell you is…I think…. I…. I…” he couldn’t say it, couldn’t get that one, single syllable word past the lump in his throat. He shook his head, tears stinging his eyes. “Damn, I can’t say it!” he said in exasperation. “I want you to be awake when I tell you! I want to know that you understand, want to know that you feel the same.” He paused briefly. “I think I know you feel the same way. How many people have had acupressure lead to…ah, this isn’t exactly how I pictured this. Perhaps…I don’t know.” He squeezed her hand again, looking to her closed eyes for any hint of recognition. “Please, Star. Wake up. I need you now. I need you, more than anything. I…lo…”

*********************
“I love you,” Robin said, still on his knees. “When I first met you, I knew that you were special. When I finally realised my feelings, it was hard to adjust at first. But then I found that I had fallen completely in love with you.” Robin looked deep into Blue-Star’s emerald eyes. “Starfire, I am completely head over heels in love with you. And that’s just an expression!” he interrupted, seeing the confusion entering Blue-Star’s face. “It doesn’t mean that I’ve fallen over or anything. The only thing that I’ve fallen for is you.” He breathed in again, and asked, “So, Starfire, will you marry me?”

Blue-Star looked back into his eyes. Starfire watched as Blue-Star nodded and replied. “Robin, I accept your proposal of marriage.” She looked very calm. Robin arched an eyebrow, before finding himself engulfed by Blue-Star’s arms. “Of course I accept! Oh Robin, you don’t know how happy this makes me!” she exclaimed. There was light applause form the restaurant patrons.

“Star…need…air!”

Starfire gasped and loosened her embrace. Robin then moved his arms up, holding her around the waist and pulling her against him. “And you don’t know how happy you’ve made me,” he whispered back

Starfire watched as the newly engaged couple continued their embrace amidst the cheers of their audience. Robin drew back slightly, and slowly removed the ring from its box. Starfire’s view was perfect: she could see the ring: it was a rich gold, with a sparkling blue stone set in the top. Robin held it gently between thumb and forefinger, and took Blue-Star’s hand. He slowly moved the ring towards her finger when a commotion arose in the restaurant. A man dressed in a dark sweatshirt and helmet leaped onto Robin and Blue-Star’s table.

“Hand it over!” he shouted, swiping the ring from Robin’s grasp. He leaped off the table, and ran out into the street.

“Hey!” Robin shouted, angrily chasing him. Starfire watched as a blue shape streaked past Robin, heading straight for the darkly dressed man.

“Heh,” the heartless villain laughed. “Valentine’s Day, easy pickin’s!”

“GIVE ME BACK MY RING!” a voice screamed. Starfire watched as the blue streak caught up to the delinquent man. He was hoisted off his feet, and carried up into the air. He screamed as he saw the ground get further and further away. Blue-Star held the man by his collar, and stopped in the air. “Now, give…me…my…ring!” she growled.

The man gulped. “How do I know you won’t drop me if I give it to you?” he said. Starfire saw Blue-Star smile behind his back.

“How do you know I will not drop you if you don’t?” she said.

The man quickly shoved the ring into her waiting hand. “Please don’t drop me!” he begged. Blue-Star carried him across to a nearby police car, and let him fall onto the bonnet, creating a small dent. She flew back towards Robin. She landed gently, straightened her dress, and handed the ring back to him.

“I believe you were about to give me the ring?” she asked.

Robin just nodded and placed the ring on her finger. Blue-Star laughed with delight, and hugged him again. She pulled back, turning her head as she admired the way the stone caught the sun’s light. Starfire, watching from the outside, sighed in awe at the beautiful ring. Blue-Star was so lucky. Starfire then felt a sudden pang of absence where her own Robin should be. She turned her attention back to the scene, intent on watching what would happen next.

Robin was gaping at Blue-Star. Blue-Star gave him a sly look over her bare shoulder. “Are you sure you still want to marry me?” she asked, giving him a wink.

Robin took a single step towards her, grabbed her around the waist, and pulled her into a deep kiss.

Starfire sighed in content. This was truly how she’d pictured a proposal, if she were to ever have one. A romantic meal, the human’s celebration of love known as Valentine’s Day, a beautiful ring, Robin, and even the crazed burglar.

OK, I know I've left you waiting for a week, but, to try to atone for me heinous evil deed of leaving you in suspense, here is the next chapter of Vanishing Act, especially for you!

Chapter 11: Flickering Light/Welcome the Darkness

Robin sighed. The single exhalation of breath signified the end of another very long day. He was still sat in Starfire’s room, he still held her hand, he still refused to leave her side. He didn’t want to move from this one spot. He was afraid of Starfire waking up alone, with no one to comfort her, no one to tell her what was happening. He was afraid of her not waking up, and no one being there to help her. He was afraid of so many things happening, he couldn’t take the risk of leaving.

Cyborg walked in through the door, with Raven and Beast Boy in tow. “How is she?” he asked.

“Not much change,” Robin replied, not moving his eyes from the Tamaranian’s unconscious face. “I think her heart rate is a little stronger now, but there’s still no sign of her waking up. No recognition, no stirring. Nothing.”

The room became silent, save for the quiet blip of the monitor in the corner. The rain outside hammered against the window, the wind howled past Titan’s Tower. It had been almost a week, and the weather had not changed. So glum and dark, the very atmosphere of the Tower, indeed the whole of Jump City, permeated into nature itself. A clap of thunder echoed across the expanse of water, making glass rattle in panes.

“Dude, you really need to get out of this room,” Beast Boy said, breaking the silence. “It can’t be good for you to be stuck in here all the time. Get out; get some air, just for a few minutes. We’ll keep an eye on Star-“

“No, I can’t go,” Robin replied, briefly looking at the green changeling. “I don’t want her to be alone. And I don’t mean that you guys being here isn’t good enough,” he added quickly. “It’s just…I think she needs…Starfire…” he couldn’t finish the sentence. He knew what he wanted to say, to tell his friends what it meant to him to be here with Starfire, but he couldn’t get the words to form properly.

“We understand,” said Raven. “You want to stay with her, and that’s reasonable. We won’t force you to leave her side.” The Titans looked at her, her insight a shock. Was this the same, emotionless friend they knew? Raven looked back levelly. “What? I do understand emotions, you know,” she said, barely stealing a glance at Cyborg.

Robin opened his mouth to say something, but was cut off by a shrill klaxon. A red light descended into the room, illuminating the darkness with an eerie glow. Shadows played tauntingly across Starfire’s body, creating the illusion of movement. Robin swallowed, and looked at the other Titans.

“Stay. We can handle this,” Cyborg said.

“We’ll call if we need anything,” Raven told him.

“Dude…. yeah,” said Beast Boy, unable to add anything to what his friends had already said.

Robin turned back to Starfire. “Thanks,” he said.

“Titan’s, go!” Cyborg said, leading Raven and Beast Boy from the room.
The klaxon ceased its call, happy that the situation for which it had been activated would soon be in control. The light retracted into the ceiling, the red glow leaving the room as the strip lighting returned to normal. The cruel motion given to Starfire by the siren ceased, and she seemed to return to a state of pleasant bliss. Robin sighed. His back ached, his head hurt, and his throat was dry. He reached for a glass of water on the table next to the bed.

There was a blip, immediately followed by another. Robin’s head turned sharply towards the heart monitor. Green lines spiked across the display, sharply rising. The distance between them shortened, the spikes peaked. Then the green line became flat, accompanied by a continuous shriek.

“STARFIRE!” Robin screamed.

The light in the ceiling flickered, the bulb nearing the end of its life. Everything moved in slow motion. Robin dived forward, dropping the glass as he reached towards Starfire. The distance between them seemed to grow greater. No matter how fast Robin tried to move, he couldn’t get to her. His fingers, so close to her chest, moved at a snail’s pace. Centimetres became metres, the distance stretching for miles as time extended into a horrific space of unreachable destination. Robin’s hand finally connected with Starfire’s chest. He pushed down once, twice, three times. His eyes stung with tears, his vision blurred.

The glass, completing its short journey to the floor, smashed. Shards flew in all directions, spreading across the wiry carpet. The cool liquid splashed outwards, showering damp fluid in a wide circle. The bulb died, blanketing the room in shadow.

Starfire moved through the strange spiral, peering at the different images that appeared before her. She moved upwards, watched as motion and action surrounded her, a continuous play of life shown through single visions of clear, stark realities. They were all different, but some seemed linked to others, whilst more still appeared to be contained within themselves, seeming to have no bearing on the other scenes that played before her.

She moved upwards through the spiral. She peered into some of the scenes, but none caught her interest. There was Beast Boy, eating his own weight in tofu; here was Cyborg, oiling his arm. Raven sat in a dark room, floating above the ground whilst a red pendant hovered before her. But then Starfire found a particular ‘viewing shape’ that captured her attention.

There was Robin, tied to what appeared to be a wooden x-frame. His arms stretched out either side, rope binding the wrists to the sturdy structure. He was scowling at something behind Starfire. The viewpoint changed, showing a tall girl with short, bright blond hair standing with one hand on her hep, and another tapping her leg. She wore tight black trousers and a pink top. She had a grin on her face, but it wasn’t a pleasant smile. She spoke.

“So, Robby-poo, have you reconsidered?” she asked, her high-pitched voice grating through Starfire’s ears.

“Nope,” he said. The girl huffed and stamped her foot. Robin smiled. “Gee, sorry Kitten, used to getting your own way?”

“I always get what I want, Robby-poo,” she replied, pulling a small black object from her pocket. “And this time won’t be any different!” She pressed a red button. A door, previously hidden, slid open. Four metal frames slid out, each one with a different Titan attached. Robin gasped, eyes wide. “Ah, I see you recognise these guys!” the girl said, grinning once again. “Change your mind yet?”

“Sorry, but I don’t think I will. My mind’s a very stubborn thing.”

“Like all men!” she replied. “Pig-headed and stupid. But you have yet to see the best I can do!” She pressed the button again. Glass canisters shot up from the floor, directly behind the restrained heroes. Doors hissed open, steam flowing out and across the hard metal floor. The girl looked at Beast Boy, and pressed the button again. The frame holding the teen shot backwards, depositing him in the canister. The door slammed shut. There was a hiss and a flash, and Beast Boy became frozen in place.

“No!” Robin yelled, straining against his ropes as Kitten laughed.

“Nah ah ah!” she cackled. “You shouldn’t disagree with me! Each time you do…” she pressed the button again. This time Raven shot into a waiting canister, and was similarly frozen. Kitten laughed again. “You going to disagree with me again?” she asked, leering at Robin.

His head dropped down to his chest. “No, I won’t,” he said.

“Hmm…well, that sounded pretty negative to me!” she said, pressing the button again.

“Don’t!” Robin shouted, but it didn’t stop Cyborg from becoming an immobile statue.

“One more to go, Robby-poo!” she taunted, holding her finger above the button. “So, what do you say…yes, or no?”

Robin paused. Starfire watched as she saw the thought process pass across his face. She knew this Kitten girl was unbalanced. Robin would need to be careful in his answer. But then, maybe no answer could be the right one.

“Yes,” he said tentatively.

“Close, but not quite convincing enough!” Kitten shrieked, pressing the button. The final frame, holding a mirror image of Starfire, shot into the final canister. It hissed shut, sealing the Tamaranian inside.

No!” Robin shouted, pulling against the ropes. His right arm snapped free. He reached down to his utility belt.

“I don’t think so, Robby-poo!” she cackled, reaching for a metal stick on a table. It ended in two sharp points. She drove it into Robin’s gut, and flicked a switch.

Robin arched backwards with a sharp cry. Blue electricity danced across his body. His eyes were screwed shut, his mouth locked open in a cry of pain. Starfire, watching the scene from the spiral, cried out with him. She couldn’t bear to see him in this much pain. She shut her eyes, and placed her hands over her ears, trying to shut out the sounds of agony.

“Your mine now, Robby-poo. You’ll always come back to Kitten!”

Starfire howled as she sank downwards into the darkness of the spiral. It clawed at her, dragging her in, pulling her into deep blackness. Her despair grew, feelings of anxiety and pain, loss and sorrow overwhelming her. A sharp pain stabbed through her chest, followed by a deep pressure. She thought she could here a voice at the edge of darkness. Three blows struck her in the chest. She gasped, and cried out.

“Leave me alone!” she shouted, fleeing deeper into the darkness that awaited her.

EEEEERRRRRRROOOOOWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!! *in deceptively sweet voice* Oh Starfire. Come here. I want to talk to you...

*Eloise grabs a sheet of paper and starts shredding while growling and waiting for another chapter*

Oh, Blue_Fire, what is the black desert? (As i sed, I've been pretty much out of cyberspace for a week.) So much reading to do!
Ok. 3 things. One, call me Eloise please, two the black desert isn't here, and three, well, this is the best way I can think of to describe it:

Chapter 1: The BlackDesert

Jack found himself standing in the middle of a dark, barren desert like expanse. It was like nothing he had ever seen before, dark and foreboding. A harsh wind blew around him, kicking up the black sand in tiny whirlwinds. It looked like tiny shards of black glass, glittering in the darkness like some evil eye staring at him from the gloom. A shattered mirror, ground to dust so that it no longer reflected anything, but absorbed it instead. There was nothing around but a few short, gnarled trees with no leaves upon them. The sky was almost as dark as the sand that surrounded him. There was no sun, no moon, no clouds, not even stars in the sky, only darkness. Yet, even with no light source, the sky seemed to have its own dull glow that illuminated the vast expanse, but very little. That’s when he realized that he was standing on the brink of a deep, dark pit. He could see bodies, broken and twisted at the bottom, floating like ghosts that were only dark images of what had been. He knew that if the wind wasn’t howling the way it was, he would hear wails of pain and anguish from in there. Voices raised in the agony of being left without hope. The pit wasn’t completely dark though. In the very center of it was a perfectly round pool of light that shone like the sun, but somehow shed no light. It was like a beautiful, white, iridescent stone, shining bright in the surrounding darkness. He stood on the brink of the pit, staring into it, but not moving. He knew, deep in his heart, that the pit held peace, but also pain, while the desert held a long hard journey. He could go either way and he accepted that, but he stood there, the knowledge floating around in his consciousness, unable to move. Somehow he felt that he couldn’t make the decision on his own. He wasn’t ready to decide. He stood on the edge of the pit, waiting. Just waiting.

It's basically like the edge of a coma, but more than just that. It's a deep, dark harsh place. Don't send Star there. I'm a sweet little angel.

Hmmm....desert of darkness....an interesting idea....but I think I will stick to the spiral, it seems to work well with my writing. Which is a good thing.

Er...going by what you said, I'm guessing you liked the chapter? Tis hard to tell

Next chapter is being written, but will take a little bit of time. I'm a week out of practice, just hope I haven't lost my touch...

Woo hoo! My story has been viewed over 1,000 times! Yay! To celebrate, I will post what is probably the worst chapter of Vanishing Act thus far. Enjoy!:D

Chapter 12: Heavy Metals and Stones/ A Solid Beat

“There!” Cyborg shouted.

The Titans halted in the middle of the street. They had responded to the distress call, making their way downtown in the T-car to the scene. The sun was finally breaking through the cloud. A shaft of light shone onto the hulking for of Cinderblock, who was happily tearing through buildings, scattering terrified people across the road.

“What’s he doing?” Beast Boy asked.

“Maybe we should ask him,” said Raven, floating up into the air.

“Teen Titans, go!” Cyborg shouted, running forwards.

Cinderblock turned to meet him. Thrusting stone hands forwards, he growled, grabbing Cyborg’s arms. He swung around, letting go of the bewildered teen. Cyborg cried out as he smashed into a very thick wall. He tore through it like paper, and rolled across the floor of the office he had landed in. His slide stopped, and he rubbed his head.

“When’d he get so fast?” he muttered, standing up and running back outside.

Beast Boy was having similar luck. He had changed into the form of a gull, flying above Cinderblock. When he had reached a decent height, he quickly changed into an elephant. He dropped through the air with the grace of a brick. His path downwards would bring a very heavy animal into contact with a very solid villain.

Cinderblock looked up, and grabbed the green mammal. His knees bent under the impact, but he remained upright. He shouted incoherently, and tossed the elephant across the road as if he were nothing. Beast Boy turned into human form, wailing as he neared a lamppost.

“Azarath, Metreon, Zinthos!” Raven chanted over a loud clang. A large signpost ripped itself from the ground. Surrounded by black energy, it shot towards Cinderblock, bending into a large curve as it connected. His arms were pinned to his side, and he lost his balance. He fell backwards, his bulky form creating a large dent in the asphalt. He grunted and growled, trying to move against the metal binding.

Cyborg exited a building via the front door, running out onto the street and standing beside Raven.

“Shoot, missed all the fun!” he said in disappointment. There was a loud crash, and a metal signboard soared into the air. It plummeted to earth, and landed with a crash. Cinderblock stood, and roared his defiance at the Titans. He snorted, and lowered his head, aiming at the two teens.

“Uh…oookay, now what?” Cyborg asked the dark girl by his side as Cinderblock began his charge.

“Grab my hand.”

“I…what?” Cyborg spluttered. “You want me to WHAT?”

“Take my hand. Now!”

Cyborg did as he was told, confusion still etched clearly on his face. Raven closed her eyes, and floated upwards into the air, the mechanised teen floating beside her as she did so. Cinderblock sped past underneath, stomping across where they had stood seconds ago.

“Ow…what hit me?” Beast Boy groaned, sitting up and rubbing at his soar head. He heard a pounding. Thinking his head was throbbing, he stood, leaning against the lamppost. He looked across the street at the floating forms of Raven and Cyborg. And the charging Cinderblock.

“Eep!” He barely sidestepped in time. Cinderblock crashed into the post. It buckled, bending in two. It thumped down onto the granite form beneath it. Cinderblock groaned, and crumpled in a heap on the floor. Beast Boy, uncoiling from his cowering curled form, stood and grinned. “I took down Cinderblock! Yeah! Woo!” He danced briefly along the pavement, before stopping. He coughed, and stood, watching the two teens hovering above the ground.

Raven and Cyborg hovered in the air, their hands still entwined.

“Um…I think we can go down now.”

“Oh. Right. Yes.” Raven slowly lowered to the street below. Removing her hand from Cyborg’s, she sighed quietly.

“Rae?”

“Yes?”

Cyborg shuffled one of his feet slightly. “Um…thanks.”

“How sweet.” A cold voice poured out onto the street. “A machine and a witch, an odd combination I’ll admit. But, as I believe the term is, cute.” Malice oozed from every word. A figure appeared on a rooftop, darkly standing against the cool wind.

“What do you want, Slade?” Cyborg growled.

“My my, angry, aren’t we? I merely wished to see how you were. I heard about what happened to your little friend Starfire. Terrible business, that. You have my sympathies.”

“Is that supposed to be some sick joke?” Beat Boy asked coldly.

Slade laughed. “No, my young changeling, no joke. I am truly concerned. You see, I know this must be affecting your leader terribly. How is Robin?”

“None of your business,” Raven replied.

“Ah, I see. You wish to protect him. Such a shame, that. You see, I felt…bad about what happened to your friend, so I thought I would bring a…get well present.”

Another figure stepped out. Then another, and another. Soon, the whole street was lined with dark, hunched shapes. They stood silently, staring fixedly at the Titans. There were dozens of them. Slade nodded, and his androids began to move forwards slowly. The Titans stood close together, ready for a tough battle. Impossible odds. It was what they were best at.

Darkness filled the small room. Thump. There was little light, save for that which peeked through the blinds and a small, flickering green glow in one corner. Thump. A shadow stood out, hunched over a dark form lying on a flat surface. Thump. The figure had its arms stretched straight below it, pushing against the chest of the quiet form on the bed. Thump. A quiet sound repeatedly echoed through the room. It wasn’t a wild, untamed resonance: it had a rhythm, following a set pattern of beats. Thump.

The figure sobbed between compressions, his quiet cries barely audible. He leaned into each push further and further. His shoulders heaved, his head dropped. Eyes squeezed shut, he continued his motions. Over and over, the pattern unbreaking. The green luminescence in the corner outlined the figure, creating a small silhouette against the far wall. It was like watching a cruel shadow puppet play. One that had real people, real actions. Real consequences.

The thump continued, the unwavering blueprint of sound playing over and over. The form on the bed remained motionless, only the force of the compressions making any movement in the lifeless figure. An arm limply dropped to the side of the bed, dangling forlornly inches above the cold floor.

“No!” the moving figure said in desperation. “Don’t leave me like this! I won’t let you leave! It’s not your time!”

Thump.

“Come on, Starfire, stay with me! Don’t give up!”

Thump.

“Please! I know you’re stronger than this!” Something wet glistened on the figure’s cheek. “Please, Star! I need you! Please!”

Thump. Blip. Blip. Blip…

The green light in the corner moved, tracing a tumultuous path across the otherwise dark display.

“Star-?”

At that moment, the auxiliary light decided to activate. Light flooded into the room. Robin covered his eyes for a brief second, dazzled by the unexpected brightness. A quiet sigh entered into hearing. Robin immediately lowered his arms, desperate to see how Starfire was. He didn’t notice her limp hand twitch once.

A green glow once again filled the room, brighter even than the newly revealed light.

Starfire sank deeper into darkness. Something continued to thud into her chest. She cried out in despair, desperately trying to get away from whatever was attacking her.

“Leave me be!” she shouted, flying deeper and deeper into the black cold that awaited her.

A shuffling groan filtered through the walls of darkness. Starfire shivered, the horrible sound freezing her to the core. Spinning through the air, she tried to find the source of the sound. She shrieked when another strong force crashed into her chest. She sailed backwards through the gloom, and hit a very solid surface. Dazed, she tried to sit up, but something was holding her down. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t move. Her right arm was stuck to what felt like the floor, refusing to budge. Her left arm still had mobility, though not much.

“What do you want? Who are you?” she shouted into the darkness. Somewhere, light exploded into being.

A shape loomed out of the darkness. Starfire shrieked in terror. It oozed its way towards her, sickening sounds escaping from its gaping mouth. It drooped horribly to the side, jerking back across before reaching towards her, leaning over her prone form. Starfire screamed, and tried to move.

“No!” she cried, opening her eyes.

She was blinded by light. She could not see anything of her location. The only thing she could she was that a dark form leaned over her. She wasted no time with hesitation. Lifting her arm, she pointed a hand at the creature, and fired off a star bolt.

Well, this is the 13th chapter. Unlucky for some, and likely as not me. This is the shortest chapter I have written for a long time, so already it doesn't bode well for me. I could have done so much more with this, but I am so tired from work and a bit stressed out, this is the best I could do. Anyways, usual routine: read, review, rest, sleep..........

-----------------------------
Chapter 13: Worst Gift Ever/ A Bird in Flight

“Well, Titans, I do hope you enjoy this gift, though it was intended for Robin and Starfire. But I’m sure you can find a use for them.”

Cyborg looked around the street. There must have been at least fifty of the mechanical menaces that lined the street. They advanced slowly, moving towards the three teens.

“Any ideas?” Beast Boy asked.

“Yeah. Kick butt. Titans, go!” Cyborg hollered.

Raven immediately levitated into the air. She closed her eyes, and placed a hand in front of her face, a single finger pointing upwards. A small dot of black energy crackled at the tip. Her eyes shot open, and she brought her hand down sharply. The energy left the tip of her finger, and stretched into a black scythe. It sliced into the advancing androids. Some collapsed, falling apart where they stood. Many more took their places, and continued the slow advance.

Beast Boy had changed into a large gorilla. He beat his fists against his chest and roared. He smashed one great hand into the head of an android. Then, grabbing it by the shoulder, he threw it at more of the advancing warriors, knocking them to the ground. They failed to rise.

Cyborg laid into the enemy with everything he had. His sonic cannon fired left right and centre, sweeping across the street. Slade’s army was forced back as the lethal waves of sound disintegrated many a robot. Cyborg paused, watching as Beast Boy and Raven dismantled yet more of the remaining androids. Something wasn’t right.

“What’s with these guys?” Beast Boy asked, morphing back to human form. “They’re not even fighting back. They just walk forwards.”

“I noticed,” Raven said, throwing one robot into a small group that had gotten too close to her. “They don’t seem to have much of an agenda.”

Cyborg glanced up at Slade, still standing on the rooftop. He had his arms folded across his chest, and simply stood, watching. Waiting.

“Well, Titans, you seem to have gone through that quicker than I anticipated,” he said, fixing his eye on each of them in turn. “I thought my distraction would have lasted longer than this…”

She couldn’t see anything but the light and the darkness. The light above her head, blinding her vision: the light from her outstretched hand: the darkness of the monster before her. Fury filled Starfire’s being: how dare this creature try to take her into darkness? How dare it try to attack her? Her eyes blazed green, and the star bolt in her hand increased in size. She screamed in anger, fuel for her attack. She let loose the energy from her palm. The creature gasped, before its shocked voice called out.

“Starfire?”

Starfire’s anger increased. How dare it use Robin’s voice?

The star bolt connected. There was a thud, followed by a grunt. The green energy illuminated the creature. A young face grimaced behind a mask as he bent forwards, the bolt of energy smashing into his stomach. Starfire cried out in horror at what she had done.

“Robin!” Starfire leapt from her bed, the covers thrown aside and crumpling into a pile next to the heart monitor. The anger was gone. She no longer felt fury, only a sense of rising panic. What had she done? She had just attacked her best friend. Starfire reached forwards, trying desperately to grab Robin’s receding hand. A tear stung her eyes. Robin was more than her friend now: more than her best friend. He was the boy…no, the man, that had taken her heart. He was the one who had always been there for her, the one she could trust above all others. He was the one that made the homesickness for Tamaran go away, and made Earth feel like home.

He was her love.

Robin was lifted off his feet by the force of the blast. He was pushed backwards at an incredible speed. His back smashed into the window, glass showering down over his vulnerable form, the drawn blinds tearing from the wall. But his momentum did not decrease: his flight continued. He soared out of the building, into the open air beyond. His soar became a free fall as the forward thrust became a downward drop.

He had reacted quickly to Starfire’s sudden attack. He didn’t have time to duck out of the way, so had done the only thing he had time for: used his cape as a shield. Though it had stopped the energy bolt from tearing through his torso, it had carried him out of the tower. Starfire’s room had been near the top of the tower. Robin estimated that he was ten feet from the side of the building, which meant he would suffer no further injury from colliding with the tower. He also estimated that his fall would bring him into contact with the ground in approximately fifteen seconds. If he could reach his utility belt and get his grappling hook, he could stop his descent.

If only he could reach it. On his journey out of the room, the blinds that had torn from the window had wrapped around his body. The ropes had trapped his arms to his chest, so he couldn’t get to his vital lifeline. The rocks that were slowly rushing towards him looked sharper than they ever had from the ground. He would surely hit those rocks now with enough force to shatter his mortal body.

If he survived to reach the ground. The star bolt that had collided with his stomach had forced the air from his lungs. And now the spinning window covering was making the ropes twist tighter and tighter, preventing any air from getting in. He gaped, fighting desperately to draw breath as spots danced in front of his eyes. His vision swam as everything became blurred. His head was light, and a dull pounding crashed through his skull.

He knew it was hopeless. He knew there was nothing he could do to save himself. He knew his fate, and faced it with grim determination.

Robin was going to die.

So now Robin is going to be splattered on the rocks below. Good. I never liked him anyways.:) Um... you aren't going to save him, are you?:pErm....you bloodthristy evil fool, you! Well, you'll have to read this chapter to find out! Actually, you won't find out just yet, but read it anyway!

I'm surprised, though the last chapter was short, i seem to have had some good feedback for it....was it the action, or the emotion? or both? either way, this chapter expands on it. And is about twice the length! I know it's "quality, not quantity," but what about a quantative supply of quality?

Oh, and the Robin/Star section is pretty short as I think I've concentrated on those to pretty heavily for most of the story, so here's a little change:D

---------------------------

Chapter 14: Sense of Gravity/ Pulling the Strings

Robin fell. He was completely engulfed by the blinds, unable to free himself and attempt to stop his fall. The ropes and bindings of the window covering were surprisingly strong. He gasped for breath as he fell, trying desperately to breath. He knew it was no good; his vision was swimming, and he had no strength left.

And the ground was approaching very quickly.

It is said that, in the moments before death, a person sees their life flash before their eyes. This is usually applied to adults, people with life experiences and many years behind them. It was never intended for a teen. Robin’s life flashed before his eyes. The training with Batman; the nights on patrol in Gotham; his first meetings with the other Titans. With Starfire. His recent memories stood out sharply from the rest. He had been with her, for a time at least. They had admitted to themselves their feelings, but had not actually said anything to each other. A pang of sorrow shot through him as he realised he would never get to tell Starfire how much he loved her. She knew already, that much was clear, but it wasn’t the same as actually telling her.

The rocks rose up sharply to greet him. Jaws of jagged stone eagerly awaited their prey. His fall would bring him to them soon enough.

Starfire screamed as she saw Robin fall, trailing fabric and rope. She dived out of the window, desperately trying to reach the boy hero. He reached towards him, her fingers stretched out. But she couldn’t reach him, he was too far down. No matter how much speed she summoned, his head start was too great. With every second her love neared the ground. Starfire would never be able to live with herself if she let him die without saying the words that she longed to say to him, to whisper on a cold night when in his embrace. She did the only thing she could.

She grabbed the trailing rope, and pulled.

The wind had picked up. It howled through the streets of Jump City, tearing through the city with the ferocity of a typhoon. Though the sun was breaking through the overcast sky, there was no warmth in the air, only a bitter cold brought from the north by the wind. It bit into Beast Boy’s lungs, each breath becoming a painful experience.

“What do you mean distraction?” Cyborg shouted at Slade.

“Just that, Cyborg,” Slade replied. “These androids were never meant to stop you. Just keep you occupied whilst I tended to a few loose ends.”

“Loose ends?” Raven asked, levitating into the air.

“Yes, my dear witch, some loose ends. Ones that needed tying up.” Slade shifted his weight to his back foot, expecting the Titans to make a move against him. But they stood stock still as they pondered over what he had said.

“Very cryptic, Slade!” Beast Boy shouted. “Why not tell us what you were really up to?”

“I don’t think I will, my young green friend, you see –“

“I’m not your friend!” Beast Boy yelled at him, clenching his fists. “Not after what you’ve done to-”

Slade held up a hand, silencing the ranting changeling. He tutted. “Such rudeness. Do you have no manners? Allow me to finish. I will not tell you what I was doing, because you can figure it out on your own.” He paused. “At least, Robin could. Can you?”

Cyborg ran over things in his mind. The androids, Cinderblock, purely a distraction? But from what?

Slade sighed, and shook his head. “Honestly, sometimes I give you other Titans more credit than you deserve. Fine then, I am distracting you from your leader and stricken comrade. Should you have really left them alone?”

Beast Boy growled. He leapt into the air, changing into an eagle at the height of his jump, and continued upwards towards Slade. He morphed into a large bear when he reached the rooftop, and dove onto Slade. But he was ready. Slade stepped to one side. Beast Boy stumbled past him, morphing into human form briefly. It was enough. Slade brought his fist smashing into the back of the teen’s head, sending him crashing to the floor. Beast Boy moaned quietly, trying to reach the sore spot on his head. He had taken too many knock to the head in one afternoon.

Slade turned his attention to Raven. Reaching into a small-concealed pouch, he drew out two small, silver pellets. He threw them at her floating form. Raven saw them coming too late.

“Azarath, Metreon…Ugh!” The pellets hit her, creating small explosions, which knocked the girl out of the air.

“Raven!” Cyborg shouted, running towards her falling body.

“Don’t let your guard down!” Slade yelled as he leapt from the building. He plummeted towards Cyborg. Cyborg looked at him, and raised his arm to ward off the attack. Slade was too fast. He changed his position in mid air, stretching his feet before him. They connected with the metal appendage. Slade used his leverage to push himself forwards, reaching towards the metal man. He grabbed Cyborg behind the neck. Flipping over his head, he landed behind the startled teen. Using his strength and momentum, he threw Cyborg forwards. The robotic hero sailed through the air before landing on the solid street. Raven crashed into the ground next to him, sending dust into the air. There was a crack, and a muffled shriek from Raven as her wrist fractured.

Slade dusted his hands. “A pity. After the display against my androids, I would have expected better.”

“Happy to oblige!” Slade turned sharply at the voice. A green goat collided with him, horns thrusting painfully into the mercenary’s chest. Slade grunted and staggered backwards, clutching his torso. Beast Boy changed into a cheetah, and leapt aside. Slade turned again.

A large cannon was aimed directly at his head. There was a loud cry, and blue energy blasted into Slade. He yelled as he was sent flying backwards, before smashing solidly into a wall. He slid to the ground, gasping as his arms tried to support his weight. He staggered upright, and shook his head. Looking up, he saw a metal fist heading his way. He ducked barely in time, the fist ploughing into the wall.

Cyborg grunted and pulled, trying to dislodge himself from the brick entrapment. He watched helplessly as Slade, swaying slightly, reached into another small pouch. He pulled out a small piece of circuitry. Pressing a tiny switch, he calmly placed it on Cyborg’s outstretched arm.

“What is that thing?” Cyborg asked him.

“A little something I created. Tell me, Cyborg, what is it like to be infected by a computer virus and have your own systems crash at the same time?”

A small blue spark flickered out of the circuit board. Cybrog cried out, before his head dropped down to his chest. His red eye dimmed as the strength left his body. He collapsed to the ground, his trapped arm sliding free of the wall.

“WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO HIM?” a voice screamed. Slade watched as black energy crackled down the street. It leapt from lamppost to lamppost, bulbs exploding as the energy surged through them. Glass and sparks showered on the street as Raven floated towards the villain.

“Nothing that can’t be fixed. Although you’d better get him back to the tower soon, he may lose part of his sys-” His voice was cut off as a pole, engulfed in darkness, was thrust against his neck. Slade was pushed backwards until his head bumped against the wall. The pole dug into the brick, trapping him.

“Fix him. Now!” Raven growled, her eyes glowing slightly red.

“My my, you need to watch your temper, little witch. You think he could fall for a girl who can’t control herself, who can’t express her emotions for fear of hurting the ones she cares about?”

“SHUT UP!” she shouted. Her eyes blazed a deep crimson. She thrust her hands forwards, grabbing the side of Slade’s mask. Steam rose from the sides as she poured her energy into her hands. She wrenched backwards, ignoring the agony that screamed into her wrist. The mask fell to the floor with a clang.

“Well done, Raven,” a tinny voice said. Raven was enraged to find a small display screen where a face should have been. A masked figure stared at her through the glass. “You have finally let go of your anger, and embraced the darkness. Perhaps you would like to join me by my side?”

Raven gasped, her arms dropping to her sides. The blaze in her eyes dimmed, bringing a fearful look to to her face.

“Yes, you’ve realised, haven’t you? I was manipulating you Titans yet again. Though it was not my true aim, forcing you to lose control of your emotions, if only briefly, was a much wanted bonus.”

Beast Boy staggered up beside Raven, placing a hand on her shoulder. “Al…alright, Slade…what were these loose ends?”

“My young changeling, you have much to learn,” Slade replied, laughing scornfully. “Loose ends? None of you three were the ‘loose ends’ I mentioned. Robin and Starfire are alone at your tower, and are worse off than when you left them. You see, they have swapped roles. My plan has been working perfectly.”

“Your plan?” Raven asked, clutching her wrist. “You didn’t send Starfire into that coma, Mumbo did!”

“My dear child, who do you think gave him back his wand?”

Tendrils of electricity licked at the empty air as the main breaker was thrown to the closed position. The generators in the back of the room hummed to life as one by one the circuits came to life. As the rheostats were moved to the maximum position the Jacobs Ladder crackled to life tossing electrons from one pole to another in a random hypnotizing dance of light. The needles of various gages slowly moved into position, indicating that all the preparations for the procedure were complete. Chapter 15: Awakenings.

“Yes, my young friends, I gave Mumbo his wand back. I never expected him to pose such a difficulty for you, but he did far more than I expected. He created chaos throughout the entire city that proved most entertaining. After all, he is a magician, and that is his natural intent. But when Mumbo took one of your own, made her vanish, I was more intrigued. You see, Cinderblock, Overload, even Plasmas, have failed to cause the kind of disruption to your team that Mumbo had achieved. ”

“Do you take some sort of satisfaction from other’s pain?” Raven asked.

“Not exactly, however it does provide for an interesting distraction. Speaking of which, don’t you enjoy watching time just fly by? Try it.” A small ‘5’ appeared in the lower right corner of the display screen. The red figure changed into a ‘4.’

Raven’s eyes widened. “Move!” she shouted at Beast Boy as she dived towards the fallen Cyborg.

3.

She grabbed him under one arm with her good hand. Dark energy surrounded the pair as Raven levitated into the air.

2.

She shot forwards through the air, dragging Cyborg with her. Mixed thoughts darted through her mind as she fled. What was Slade up to? He had said so much, yet so little information actually revealed anything. Why did he again seem to focus on Robin? Why did he choose Mumbo? And why was she feeling a growing concern for her unconscious cargo?

The explosion ripped through the street. Orange flame tore into buildings, licking up the walls and firing high into the empty air. Glass imploded, allowing the unobstructed blast to rip into the insides of shops. Flames quickly caught, any combustible material instantly bursting into orange balls of heat and light. Hot air blasted past Raven, her cloak billowing forwards as she continued her journey towards the tower. She looked behind at the large crater that now occupied one half of the street. She was thankful the area had cleared of people during Cinderblock’s attack.

“Yah!”

Raven looked below to see the speeding form of a green cheetah run past, trailing a small tip of fire on his tail. He streaked towards the bay, and leapt into the water. There was a hiss as the small fire was extinguished. Beast Boy emerged from the water, shivering and sighing in relief. Raven, however, was looking beyond him to the bright green flashes above the tower. Screams floated to her ears, across the still waters of the sea.

Starfire threw another chair out of the window. It glided upwards, nearing the top of the tower. She screamed, and a ball of green energy shot from her hand. It collided with the offending item of furniture, blowing it to pieces. Chunks of hot, acrid smelling plastic dropped past the window. Starfire grabbed a small table, and, hurling it out of the window, prepared another star bolt.

She was angry with herself. She had watched as Robin fell. She had tried to reach him, tried to save him form crashing into the rocks below. But she couldn’t reach him, so she had grabbed onto the trailing window blinds that were wrapped around his prone body. She remembered holding them in her hand. She remembered pulling them, wrenching backwards to stop Robin’s fall. She remembered…

She screamed again, grabbing the television. She pulled, snapping its cables. Starfire hurled it out of the window, shooting another star bolt at it. It exploded, sparks showering down onto the hungry rocks below. There was a quiet groan. Starfire whirled around to see the dark shape on the bed stir. She dashed to his side, and grabbed a gloved hand in hers.

“Robin!” she cried. “You are awake!”

Robin shifted, trying to sit up. “Yeah…I…yeah.” He was disoriented. Hadn’t he been plummeting to the ground mere moments ago? He winced as a sharp pain sliced through his chest. He looked down, too see an ugly red weal across his torso. He touched it gingerly, the swelling painful to the touch. He wondered why he could see it at all.

Starfire blushed. “I did not have much choice. When I got you back to the tower, I was afraid you might have terrible injuries to your body. You were unconscious and couldn’t tell me what was wrong, so I…removed the clothing on your upper body.” She flushed a deeper red, turning her face away. Robin cocked his head slightly to one side. “I am sorry if I have done something indecent!” Starfire said, turning back.

“It’s fine, Star, don’t worry about it. It’s better that you checked. I could have had broken rips or a collapsed lung or who knows what.” Robin again touched the marks on his chest, wincing as he did so. “It’s lucky you were there, Starfire, or this could have been much worse.” Starfire again turned away from him. “What’s wrong, Star?”

“It is my fault you have such injuries. I was the one that knocked you from the tower in the first place.” She turned back to him, tears in her eyes. “It was my fault, Robin! I could have hurt you, or worse! I am sorry! I am truly sorry!” She burst into tears, crying and gasping.

Robin himself was on the verge of tears. He was so afraid when Starfire had disappeared. She had gone, and he didn’t know where. Even when they did find her, she was in a deep coma, unable to awaken. And now, he had her back, and she was blaming herself for almost killing him. He got out of the bed, standing unsteadily. His legs shaking, he stepped towards the Tamaranian. He slowly placed his arms around her, drawing her to his chest. She continued to cry, her tears pouring down his torso, the cool dampness soothing his wounds.

“It’s ok, Star,” he whispered. “It’s ok.”

“It isn’t,” she replied, her voice muffled against his body. “I almost…”

“Don’t worry,” Robin said, absently stroking her auburn hair. “Everything’s fine now, it’s going to be ok.”

Starfire gave one shuddering sigh as the gentle fingers caressed her hair. She pressed closer to Robin, enjoying the warmth of his body. She slipped her arms around him, returning the hug. The comfort of his embrace soothed her mind. He had forgiven her, and that was more than she deserved. She held him tightly, afraid of letting him go.

Robin ignored the returning painful throb. This was more than worth the pain. His hand continued its slow movement through the girl’s long hair. His other hand was placed against the small of her back, tracing small circles and patterns against the bare skin. Robin drew back slightly, looking deep into Starfire’s emerald eyes. He found himself lost, swimming through an ocean of beauty and wonder. The moment became infinite, time having no meaning in this place. There was no rush, no need for anything to get done: they could simply enjoy this time together.

Starfire turned her head very slightly. The sensation of the gentle strokes of her hair and the tickling of her back made her sigh. She moved her face towards Robin’s. She could feel his gentle breathing wash across her flesh, sending a tremor through her spine. This was the moment that had been delayed for far too long. Her lower lip brushed against Robin’s, electricity sparking between the two. One final movement forwards, and their lips touched together.

Sensation exploded through her. A fire burned inside her, filling her body with the heat of a thousand suns. His soft, gentle lips caressed her own. She closed her eyes, moving deeper into the kiss. Their bodies pressed against each other, warmth sharing between the two souls. The experience flashed through her mind, the wonderful feeling of his lips on hers tracing a path through time, tearing the very fabric of awareness and perception. It seemed to last for hours, the beautiful junction that they had awaited. And yet it was over too soon.

They drew back slightly. They both sighed at the same time, still holding each other tightly. Starfire placed her head on Robin’s shoulder, tracing her hands up and down his back. “That was wonderful,” she breathed, snuggling against him. Robin nodded mutely. It certainly was wonderful, too much so for mere words to describe. "I...love you," he whispered. Starfire looked at him, before whispering back, "I love you too."

They stood, holding their embrace, before sitting on the edge of the bed. Starfire still had her head on Robin’s shoulder. Her left arm curled around his back, her hand placed on his waist. Robin’s arm was draped across her shoulder, his fingers lightly stroking her upper arm as he looked around the room.

“Star?” he asked quietly, moving his free arm and wrapping it across her waist, drawing her closer.

“Yes?” she breathed, snuggling closer.

“Where’s all our furniture gone?”

Well, this is the final chapter. Although you still have the epilogue to appear, this is the last true chapter to Vanishing Act. To think, just 1 month ago i joined this site, posted a prologue, and it developed into a full blown story. I never expected it to last this long: if you look at my first post, the story was only meant to encompass 5 chapters, and there was going to be little romance (shock-horror!). and now, i give you chapter 16. BE WARNED: there is mention of the return of a character, who is back by popular demand....

---------------------------------

Chapter 16: Titans United

“Umm… well, I was…angry and upset and the chairs were just so tempting…” Starfire mumbled, blushing as she spoke. She fidgeted slightly, embarrassed. “I used them to vent my frustration…”

Robin laughed, then coughed sharply and clutched his chest. He kept chuckling and gasping, wincing as he laughed. Starfire joined him, her sweet voice rising with his. The room was filled with the joyous sound as the couple continued to laugh, interrupted by the occasional cough and gasp. They didn’t notice the door slide open.

Beast Boy stepped inside, looking around at the Boy Wonder and the Tamaranian sitting on the edge of a bed. He waited for the laughing to stop before he spoke. “Hey, what’s been going on?”

“Oh, not much,” replied Robin, glancing at the green teen. “Starfire’s heart stopped, so I used CPR, then she woke up and shot me with a star bolt, I fell out of the tower, almost died, and now we’re together.” Starfire placed a hand to her mouth, hiding a smile.

Beast Boy’s jaw dropped. “You…what? Starfire’s heart stopped?”

“Yep,” said Robin.

“Then she woke up and shot you?”

“Correct,” said Starfire.

“And you nearly died?”

“Yes,” Robin and Starfire both said.

“And now you’re an item?”

They shared a brief glance, before nodding.

Beast Boy nodded with them, unable to think of anything else to do. “OK, fair enough. It’s been obvious to the rest of us you two were going to get together eventually, so congratulations I guess.” He turned to go. Pausing at the door, he looked back over his shoulder. “Oh, one more thing. Where’s all the furniture gone?”

Starfire snorted with laughter as Robin fell off the bed, curling into a ball on the floor and clutching his ribs. “Ah! It…hurts…!” he gasped between laughs as Starfire fell backwards onto the bed, rolling onto her side and giggling.

Beast Boy sighed, shook his head, and walked out of the room. Those two were insane, even by his standards. He hadn’t even had a chance to tell them his new joke.

Raven moved through the dark corridors of the tower, heading towards Cyborg’s room. She had her hand placed on his shoulder as he floated horizontally before her. She moved him through the opening door, and laid him on his bed. She glanced around at the scattered tools and disks, wondering what would help him recover. She jumped as she heard a voice.

“Hey Rae,” Cyborg said, glancing up at her with his human eye.

“Cyborg? I thought your systems crashed?” she replied, pulling a chair up and sitting by his side.

“Yeah, they did. Knocked me out for a while. But I’m half human, remember? My electronic components are down, meaning I can’t move, but my brain still works. So does my stomach. Could you get me a -?” Raven shot him a withering glance. Cyborg turned his head away. “Uh…right. Sorry.”

Raven’s expression softened. Had this been Beast Boy or any other Titan, she would have told them to get up and get it themselves. But this wasn’t any of the others. “What do you need?” she asked, getting up to go.

“There’s a bacon sandwich in the fridge. Could you get it for me?”

“Sure,” she said, walking out of the door.

She was back within minutes, holding a large triangle-shaped foodstuff. There was a strange yellow mark on her arm. She placed the sandwich on the table beside Cyborg’s bed, and resumed her place on the chair.

“Thanks,” he said, still looking away from her.

Raven was worried she may have offended him. “Are you ok?” she asked.

“Yeah, peachy.”

“Then why aren’t you looking at me?”

“Um…I can’t turn my head back,” he mumbled in embarrassment.

Raven stifled a laugh as she raised one hand. A small amount of energy flowed through her as the moved Cyborg’s immobile head so that it faced her and the table with the sandwich.

“Thanks,” he said.

“Just don’t expect me to feed you,” she said, her face becoming a stern mask as she fought to keep the giggles away.

“Could you at least move that sandwich closer? That bacon smells sooo good!” Raven obliged, placing the plate on Cyborg’s chest. He looked longingly at the bread and meat, unable to quite reach it. “Umm…”

Raven stood. “Forget it, I’ll go get Beast Boy.” Raven once again got up, her marked arm passing in front of Cyborg’s eye.

“Hey, what’s that?” he asked, looking at the strange stain.

Raven looked down at it, then looked at Cyborg. “Somehow that ferocious pizza got back into the fridge. It attacked me, so I threw it out of the tower again.

“Ah, the return of the acrobatic pizza,” Cyborg said, still staring at his sandwich, just as the door opened.

“Dude, there is something weird going on with Starfire and Robin. They won’t stop laughing. I didn’t even say anything funny!” said Beast Boy as he walked into the room, rubbing at the small lump on the back of his head.

“Do you ever?” Raven asked. “Could you help Cyborg eat his sandwich? He can’t move.” She walked past Beast Boy and out of the door as he stepped towards the bed. The door slid shut, but Raven didn’t move away. She stood, listening to the voices inside.

“So, what you got here? Bacon?! Dude, no way! Get rid of it!” there was the sound of a plate being placed heavily on a surface, and a quiet splat of something landing in a container. “It’s a good thing I always carry an emergency supply of tofu…”

“Noooo!” Cyborg screamed.

Raven ran down the corridor, a hand clamped tightly over her mouth as tears streamed from her eyes. She reached the window just in time. She threw it open, and thrust her head out, her laughter bawling out across the bay.

The next day, and the main living quarters of the tower was bustling with activity. Raven levitated in one corner, flicking through the pages of a large book. She had one wrist in a blue support brace. She had managed to fix the fracture and most of the muscle damage, but she still felt it would be safer to give it a few days to finish healing naturally.

Robin tapped away at a computer. He had bandages wrapped around his torso. It had turned out that the red marks on his chest were likely to be there for quite a while, and too much stress would make permanent scars, which Robin really didn’t want. He looked up news articles as he typed, seeing headlines such as Titans Triumphant, and Starfire Returns, Exclusive Story! He smiled as a bandaged arm slipped around his waist. He took the hand in his, gently kissing the palm.

“What are we viewing?” Starfire asked, standing behind Robin.

“Just some reports about us. Seems everyone knows you’re back safe and sound.”

“That is good for the city, yes?”

“Yeah, but it’s also good for me.”

Starfire giggled as she rested her head against his shoulder. She placed a soft kiss on his cheek, and watched with him as they viewed a web cast news story.

Reports say that the Titan known as Starfire has returned safely to her teammates. At this point we are unsure as to what happened, but we are hoping for an interview soon…

Beast Boy was feasting on tofu. He placed pounds of it into his mouth at a time, swallowing without bothering to chew. He would never understand why Cyborg refused to eat the stuff. He had only eaten the tofu sandwich yesterday when told he would be getting no other food, and even then he had grimaced as he chewed. Beast Boy shrugged, and shovelled more of the food into his mouth, the bandages around his head not slowing down his feast.

Cyborg walked in through the door. It slid shut quietly behind him. He strolled across the room, before stopping and posing in the centre space between the curved sofas and wide screen television.

“Check it out ya’ll!” he said, grinning from ear to ear. “Cyborg’s repaired and back in business!”

Raven watched him flex and jog on the spot. She noticed something different.

“Yeah, I got rid of that nasty little virus! It’s gone from my hard drive now!”

“You sure?” Raven asked as Cyborg’s right arm began to spin around.

It span faster and faster in large circles. Cyborg gasped and tried to grab at it with his left arm. He found, to his horror, that his left arm was now spinning in large windmills, matching his right.

“Argh!” he groaned. “I must have missed some dormant – wha-? Hey!” Cyborg suddenly began running around the room, leaping over chairs and swerving past Beast Boy as he charged through the kitchen. “I can’t stop!” he shouted, running around madly.

His feet pounded across the floor, driven by a mind of their own. The other Titans laughed as he careened past the sofas, his whirling arms creating a breeze that made Raven’s cloak blow back over her head. She straightened her clothing, then chanted quietly under her breath and, with palm facing upwards, flicked her hand towards the ceiling. Cyborg was wrapped in black energy, and lifted off his feet. He floated up to the ceiling, stopping as he was pushed against it. His arms and legs stopped moving, and he sighed with relief.

“Thanks, Rae. You can let me down now.”

“I think we should make sure you purge that virus, we don’t want you destroying the tower” she replied, turning her attention back to her book.

“It’s purged! I just deleted the files! They’re gone, so let me down.” Raven didn’t turn her attention away from her book. “Come on, let me down! Please?” Robin and Starfire laughed as Cyborg’s desperate pleas went unheard. Beast Boy was too busy choking on tofu to make a sound. He coughed and spluttered, finally managing to swallow his food. The laughter died away as Starfire and Robin turned their attention back to their news readings. Beast Boy looked at each of the Titans, noting something he had never seen before.

“You know, this is probably the worst shape we’ve ever been in after a period of fighting crime,” he said, addressing his friends. They all looked at him.

“What do you mean, BB?” Cyborg called down to him from the ceiling.

“What I mean is, each one of us has injuries. Robin’s got his bruised ribs, Starfire’s got those burns on her arm, Raven has her arm in a support brace, you’ve got that computer virus, and I…” at this point, Beast Boy gingerly touched the back of his head, “I have massive head trauma.”

“I wouldn’t exactly call it ‘head trauma,’” said Robin.

“Well my head hurts, and it was traumatic, so it is. Anyways, what I’m getting at is we’ve all taken some nasty damage in the last couple weeks. What if some villains were to start something, right now? Could we handle it?”

A siren blared through the tower. The Titans glared at Beast Boy.

“You just had to say it, didn’t you?” they all shouted at him.

“What? I was just making a point!” he replied as he, Starfire, Robin and Raven left the living room.

“Guys! Aren’t you forgetting something?” Cyborg shouted after them. “Get me down!”

I'm glad you liked the chapter, Starfire5. I will post the epilogue after some minor editing, and hopefully once i've had a few more comments. Real ones (glares at Pressurecooker). Until it's ready, you'll have to wait about...(looks at watch) a few hours. Tootles, ya'll!

Well, this is it. The epilogue. After this, there will be no more Vanishing Act chapters to appear. Oh, there will be a sequel, and I have my other 3 titans projects on the go, but this was my first true achievement, not just as a fan-fiction writer, but as an author. This is the longest story i've written. Around 25,000 words. More than all of my other creative works combined, this is a novelette. I would like to thank PressureCooker, Starfire5, Sun_rise, Blue_fire(eloise, since you seem to prefer to be refferred to by name,)Eternalshadow, Kylewayne, and my first ever reviewer, ArtificialIdiot. Thank you all for the support. And now, I give you the closing finale to Vanishing Act.

Epilogue: Changes and Routines

Some things had changed…

Robin and Starfire sat on the couch. Robin had his arm around Starfire’s shoulders, and she had hers around his waist. She snuggled closer to him as he tried to explain what had happened to her. It was not an easy task.

“But I always thought that was a particular type of spiced Earth food?” Starfire said. “What would I be doing in spicy Earth food?”

Robin laughed. “No, Starfire, that’s korma. You were in a coma. It’s like a deep sleep.”

“Then I go into this ‘korma’ every night?” she asked, looking up at the ceiling.

“No, that’s just sleep. A coma is…well, I suppose it is sleep, but you can’t wake up from it, no matter how hard someone tries to wake you.”

“Oh, so it is what Beast Boy goes into every night?”

Robin laughed again, pulling the Tamaranian closer. “Yes, exactly!” he said. He looked into Starfire’s eyes. The beautiful alien girl gazed back, lost in the moment as Robin gently cupped her chin, and pulled her into a deep kiss.

“Can’t you do that somewhere else?” Beast Boy asked, trying to ignore the couple next to him as he played X Race 3000.

He was racing a time trial lap. His car screeched through the corners, blasting through the straightaways and jumping the bridges. Beast Boy’s eyes flicked to the clock in the corner of the screen. His car was so close to the line, he could smell the digital bits and pixels that made up the chequered flag. Beast Boy shouted triumphantly as his car sped past, displaying a new record time. He jumped up sharply, knocking the couch over. Robin and Starfire cried out in surprise as they rolled off their seats and landed in a heap on the floor. Beast Boy didn’t bother apologising: he entered his name on the display screen. The Tamaranian got to her feet, eyes blazing green.

“You…you…. Clorbag Varblernelk!” Robin hastily grabbed her shoulders, dragging her towards the kitchen as Starfire hurled alien insults at the changeling.

“Huh, haven’t heard that in a while,” said Cyborg, walking past the fuming girl and the panicking Robin. “What did you do this time, BB?”

“I beat your record on X Race 3000!” Beast Boy replied, selecting the record display screen. Cyborg’s mouth dropped open as he looked at Beast Boy’s name, flashing in red letters at the top of the screen.

“No way! No one can beat me at this game!” Cyborg looked closer at the entries on the screen. “I’m pretty sure my fastest time was at least two seconds better than that…” he mused.

“Dude, don’t be a sore loser.”

Cyborg snapped his fingers. “I got it! You erased all the high scores and re-entered them, you cheating little morph-mad munchkin!”

“Prove it!”

“You spelt my name as ‘Cybrog,’ you idiot!”

“I…oh. Oops. Busted.”

Beast Boy dropped the controller and dashed towards the door as an enraged Cyborg gave chase.

“Get back here!”

“No way!”

“I’m warning you, come back here and face me like a man!”

“Stay back! I have tofu, and I’m not afraid to use it!”

Beast Boy ran down the corridor, passing several doors along the way. One opened just as he ran past. A dark figure stepped out.

“What’s going on?” Raven asked, looking down the corridor at Beast Boy.

“Rae, watch out!” Raven turned, seeing Cyborg cannon towards her. He tried to stop, tripping over his feet and landing face first on the floor. He slid along, stopping at Raven’s door.

“Cyborg! Are you alright?” she asked, helping him up.

He rubbed his head. “Yeah, I’m fine. Green boy down there’s just getting on my nerves is all.”

Beast Boy had stopped a little way down the corridor. “Raven,” he said, “did you just show…concern?”

Raven hid a small blush. “No.”

“Yes you did! You do have emotions! Ha! Raven and Cyborg, sitting in a…”

“Shut it, you little gremlin!” Raven and Cyborg both shouted, sprinting down the corridor. Beast Boy yelped, and ran up the stairs, still singing.

…but some things never change.

Well if you're done giving me the evil-eye...

I rather enjoyed that. It had all the elements of a great story:

action
romance
character development
comedy
acrobatic pizza

Yup, all there.

But what did YOU think? All to often authors are not asked how the feel about their own work. So let me be the first to ask your feelings on your story now that it is finished. I ask this because I get lots of praise for my work and sometimes I think the whole chapter amounts to a dinner plate full of dog poo. Don't get me wrong, not everyone thinks like me. I just have... issues:anime:

In reply to PressureCooker, I'm glad you enjoyed the story so much. I feel it was an achievment: I've wanted to write stories and novels for years, but I always lacked the inspiration and the drive to write past a single chapter. This is the longest story I have written, and is half the length of a novel (yes, I checked average novel wordcounts) so it is a huge milestone for me. Who knows, if I write a second story of this length, I'll see if DC want to publish them both in a collection....:D However, what I am most proud of is not just the length of the story, but the quality with which I appear to have written it. It makes me feel honoured and very ecstatically pleased that so many people can draw entertainment from my work. I am also glad that, from several of the reviews i recived, that this story is believable, and could happen in the Titan's universe. For these achievments, I have to thank all of my reviewers and readers. Everytime i logged on to check the progress, there would be a few more hits on the counter, or an extra comment from a reader, and each time I saw that I would think "Whoa, I have fans! They want more!", and so I would suddenly write my ideas on a page, and find a story forming on screen. I'll be hinest: I only had the vaguest plot plan. I only originally intended for Mumbo to be the only villain: Starfire was going to disappear, but reappear within a few hours, with no injuries or 'badness.' I hadn't even planned any of the chapters, I simply wrote on the spur of the moment with only a small idea of what would happen, and it would just take form, and become part of a bigger tale, each chapter seeming to pass coherently into the next.

As for the suggestion from Lightshadow1890, I have considered placing this on FF.net, but there are thousands of Titan's fics there already. I have also had a few bad experiences there (someone ripped off my work, another accused me of ripping off their work, etc.), so I'll just wait and see if anyone else thinks this is a good idea.

My thanks and praise to all my readers, reviewers, and fellow Titans fans.

So many people have asked, so I will reply with this: Yes, there will be a sequel to Vanishing Act. However, first I am preparing and writing my other 3 Titan's stories. And things are a little mad at the moment: I start university in 2 weeks, so i have preperation to do. Plus the first week there is Fresher's week (parties, drunken shenanigans and yahooing), so my story posts may be few and far between. But fear not, I will continue to write my stories whenver I am able.

I loved you fic. It was really one of the best Ive ever seen. But I noticed something about it that just didn't seem to fit, Then I figured what it was. The storyies dont match the ages. Robin and Star's relationship was beautiful, but hes 16, 17 at the most, and realistically starfire is around 15-16. isn't that a little intense for young kids?

Man, we need like the twenty-ish titans. Then everything'd be perfect.

You'd be surprised at what 16 year olds can get up to. Ho yes, very surprised indeed. I see the point you are making. Being 18 myself, I am only 2-3 years older than the titan's estimated ages (or at least what i was working with), and I have never myself experienced a situation as I described in the story. BUT at 16, heck even 14, I felt I knew what it was all about and stuff, so i figured they would as well. Shaky I know, but be honest, surely just a peck on the lips and a hug isn't what you want?

Anyways, gld to hear you liked it, more is on the way!

Wow. This story is the ultimate. Truely. Almost everything is perfect. You can't predict it, you aren't disappointed by it, and it is always more than you expect. Hats off to the pizza! That total rocks - though I wonder what always infects the Titans' food (it turns fuzzy and blue and roars).

It's great to hear that there will be a sequel - can't wait to read it. So when your computer is all fixed and whatnot, finish the Musical and get some new stories up. Time constraits I understand, but we're all counting on you.

Just one negative, I don't really like the Cy-Rae relationship. Never really have. But still, it's a good story and I don't mind what you do with the characters in yours because in my story, I do what I choose. You, of course, being the superior writer, should get twice as many privleges as me. Anyway, best of wishes.

Ps. Read "Perfect Vision," my fic. Pleeeeeze! OK, sorry.

What the hell, I'll post too.

I'm not sure what it is about this. I don't even personally like the character matchings in this fic. But IT DOESN'T MATTER! For some reason, I loved this story. I loved it! It's something about the way you wrote it, the way you showed things, it was really great. How did you do that?! How can I do that?!

Is it just experience? Like will I be able to do that as a freshman in college? Or are you just a kickass writer?

Posting? Sounds like fun.

Honestly, I am getting tired of waiting. I know that pieces of literature take time (look at J.K. Rowling...), but it has been a long time. Too long. I would really appreciate a new chapter and post, other stories feed my creativity.

I could go on and on and on, but long story short:

PLEASE POST SOON!!!

OK, Welshi, buddy.

Taking time to read this, methinks. Saved the first page- I'll get to it sometime and get back to ya.

And, according to all my research, Season 4 IS supposed to end the series...And that IS supposed to be the title to the last three episodes...

But who knows? Teen Titans has become more popular than the producer THOUGHT it would be. Who can say for certain?

Now, damnit, when will we see the last episodes of Season 3?!?!

Ummm...Good things can't last forever.

What? You want Teen Titans to go the way of Land Before Time? I don't think so.

As awesome as Teen Titans is, I don't want it to go one forever, because if it does, it'll get ruined. All good things have to end before they get too ugly. If the team can keep making quality episodes for 10 seasons (hehe, like the Simpsons) then go right ahead. But did you ever think that maybe soon they're going to want to move onto something NEW?

Geez, if they never felt that way, the show wouldn't EXIST and we'd STILL be seeing new episodes of their Batman show...Know what I mean?

Oh, and, uh...Welshi, I HAVE been reading this. I'll post up all of my comments sooner or later...

OK...So, there's like, 4 pages of replies after the fic ends, eh?

Wow, I'm kinda creeped out. Haven't read it all yet, but when you highlight stuff to copy/paste and save to read later, some things get spoiled a bit.

From what I can tell, you and I have some really similar ideas in our fics...

Ya know what's REALLY creepin' me out?

Some things never change.

 Ummm...Yea...That's, like, one of the main ideas to my plot, and I even have it in my sig...So yea, that's a little creepy for some reason...

I have throughly enjoyed this story! The way you bring starfire and robin together is terrific. The only thing that i thought could have used some improvement was slade. He has always struck me as being a little more aloof and mysterious, a man of few words. I think that the dialouge he has could have been a bit shorter and more to the point. But besides that It was great!! Keep up the good work!

I have to agree with starfire0639, if someone's sig annoys you, just don't read it and don't make a big deal out of it, it's kinda harsh to complain about it and make another member of the board feel bad.

The sequel is going to be put on the shelf for later. It will be written, oh yes, but at the moment i have a much bigger project to work on. First of all, finishing the musical extras. Secondly, I am writing Titans: A.S. It is a massive story that may take months to complete(especially with uni work and all...), but rest assured it's going to be...well, i'd like to say "Great" but i can't, so i'll say it's going to be there.

This was Spectacular. Best fic I can think of reading. I hope, No I NEED a sequel. I don't need to have it now, but I'd love a sequel. This was so awesome. The reason I think it needs one, is because the whole Slade method was left out. He got a way, and that was it. It's kinda open, but that's not a gripe. This was so perfect. I loved the emotional scenes. GO WELSHI! HALL OF FAMER!!!

Hmm...sequal. I doubt it would be about Starfire and Robin though, since he already did that. However his Lordship did leave the ending open to a potential relationship with Cyborg and Raven. Perhaps that's where he will go with it. Just a guess

Matt A
12-15-2004, 06:39 PM
There could be potential for more Robin/Starfire stuff: Slade putting their relationship on chronic rocks, that kind of thing. Putting the Raven/Cyborg relationship in there as well would just be the icing on the cake.

I don't want you to call him Lord because that's showing him respect, and the thing about friends is that you don't need to respect them. I know Welshie too well to have any respect for him. I like him sure - hell, I like him quite a lot - but that's no reason for me to bow and scrape in his presence.

Now you will pay. *starts fishing and catches two herrings* When we get back to shore you will make repairs to my ship and you can only use these herrings as tools!!! If you fail, I will make you eat some really bad eggs!!!

lol That was fun. Yay!!! I am watching Pirates of the Carribean again. I can never get tired of it.

VICTORY!!!:anime: *looks over to Rrarbecy, grins evilly* Rrarbecy- Hehehe......

*Night falls, and Raven37 is sailing in her new ship when someone taps her on the shoulder.* Raven37-What is it... *Sees Nevermore holding a strange gold medallion and in the form of a skeleton* Nevermore- Couldn't resist. *Nevermore pulls out a katar and hits Raven37 on the head with the flat of the blade, knocking Raven37 unconcious* Nevermore- Throw her overboard *Raven37 is wakened by the water that she falls in, and finds a rope and grabes it.* Nevermore- What in blazes? *Sees a giant ship with a flag depicting Lord Welshi's avatar on it* Lord Welshi- Nevermore! I am now going to sink your ship for posting so much fluff!!! Raven37- And I will help. *Raven 37 loads a cannon* Nevermore- Don't you even thing about blowing more holes in my ship!!! *Huge battle begins, but it never finished, for Nevermore's ship is a ghost ship, and Lord Welshi's is too strong to be penetrated by cannon fire.* Nevermore- how about we just join forces, eh?

Yes, I am quite sorry for the fluff also. When are you going to post a new story like you promised?

Patience my young friend. Let him take his time. Plus, have you read the Musical? If not you should. I hear it is awesome.:D (I'm only halfway through it.... But I'm trying to finish it in my spare time.) Anyways, can't wait for you to start the A.S. Lord Welshi!:anime: By the way, what does that stand for?

D'yarh, avast ye scallywags! I have come te claim me plunder, d'yarh! Yes, fluff, too much of it you scallywags. I ought to make ye walk the plunk and sink into Davey Jones' locker!

Titans A.S. is on the way. I can't tell you what A.S. stands for, it'd ruin the whole thing. It's taking me a long time because i have to make this the best story i have ever written, and i don't want to disappoint anyone. If the prologue and first chapter don't impress, then I'll lose my audience, so they have to be the best work i have ever done to date.

Fear not, for it is coming.

Titans: A.S.

It's coming...

So is a my breakfast thru my colon, but you don't see me advertising it.

With all this hype, I think I'm gonna be dissapointed no matter what happens. That may have proven to be a critical error, LW.

He HAS expressed, once, that he didn't want to be called Welshi. Maybe that's changed.I don't see why he'd object. Everyone who knows him has been calling him Welshie for at least the last two or three years. That's where his online name came from...

“Man, there’s some crazy stuff going on,” Cyborg replied, his face appearing on Robin’s communicator. “Me and Raven were just attacked by flowers that sprayed acid!”

“My cowl will never be the same,” Raven’s morose voice could be heard in the background.

dude this is great, so halarious!....flowers that sprayed acid....who would've guessed?,...not me obviously..:anime:

Seeing as Welshi seems to have left this place for good, I'm assuming "never". Which sucks, seeing as he's a great writer, and formerly a good friend of mine, but that's just the way it is.

Love the story. It be cool if he finished it. Anyway, I've read every chapter, and I love this entire story:cool: . Lord Welshi is arguably the best writer on the forums, evident by this story and his other fics. WOOT SCHOOL IS OUT *grabs surfboard, jumps in car for a surf sesh at the beach*.
