View Full Version : Should Family Guy Get A Rest??

Family Guy only has 50 episodes, they are hilarious and FG is one of the greatest animated shows of all time. But Seriously, should AS consider giving it a rest before we get sick of it. It's on TBS currently, I own the DVDs, I'm sure a ton of people own the DVDs too, so it is not like we won't see it if it is gone from AS for a while. They should take it off now and have it return in like Late 2004 or early 2005.

So long as it continues to get strong ratings from the demographics they're looking for, they'll continue to aire it. It isn't a matter inundating the viewer. It's numbers and money.
Me, I'd love to see it, and much of the other comedy titles replaced. But I'm in the minority. I can't stand FG, Futurama, or any of the WS comedies. They don't make me laugh. At all. I find them sophomoric at best.
But that wasn't the question, was it? Sorry.
Carry on.

Not gonna happen. 50 eps or not, it's a ratings whore.

Maybe it should-- but it won't. FG is one of their flagship properties, a big ratings-grabber, and probably the number one draw for viewers new to AS. They'd be fools to give it a rest-- it'd be like taking brand new crispy hundred-dollar bills, folding them into little boats, letting them float around in the toilet bowl for a while, then slamming the seat down, pushing the flush lever, and calmly walking away.

They should only give it a rest if they can find something new. If we have to have reruns, Family Guy is better than anything else. Look how well Home Movies performed on weekdays :( . If they get a new show they should bump Family Guy (or Futurama) for it because this Conan at 1 am ******** isn't cutting it. But then again, that's Inuyasha and ATHF's fault, not Family Guy.

They could try, to get something new and experiment on it. They can't have FG bring in most of the ratings in. They could use some old shows from an old block CN used to air (Can you say "O Canada!"?). They could use Stroker and Hoop, the commercial with the girl should get people to watch it. But if AS needs those ratings, they won't bump it. They might as well bump Inuyasha (and that is bad). I don't think it would hurt though.
Wait, am I going off topic?

Unless they can find something just as big a ratings-grabber as Family Guy... no.

Family Guy is one of the greatest TV shows ever, it just should be given a few months to rest, before we get the new episodes.

They did try. Home Movies was put in the lead spot. It bombed hard. Family Guy can't be replaced. It keeps getting BETTER and BETTER ratings. Hell, ATHF is the only one that probably gets high enough ratings to be put in Futurama's spot. Family Guy will stay in the lead spot through the new episodes while Futurama is slowly wanned out with ATHF and hopefully one of the new pilots, if successful (VB seems to have the best chance.)
Stroker and Hoop only has one episode as of now, not a good replacement.

I'd suggest cutting down Family to Guy to probably one airing per week until the new episodes arrive.
Leave it on Sunday nights with the other once per week shows, then when the new eps are ready for broadcast, return it to the five days a week slot, with the newer eps on Sunday.

That's exactly what I was thinking. But they will most likely do that. If they did that Futurama would be the lead, ATHF at 11:30 and Sealab 2021 at 12:00 if they want the Anime:Comedy split on weekdays. i think both Futurama and Family Guy should be on sunday (For FG) and Saturday (Futurama) then have other shows take thier place on weekdays. But Adult Swim won't do that because it would decrease thier ratings dramaticly.
When everyone gets sick of it, which at this rate, will be never.

Yeah, I WILL NEVER get sick of it. I'm just saying it may damage its popularity before the new episodes hit, Which I DOUBT will happen but you never know.

Interesting metaphor...and yet very true.

Everyone likes to play these things over and over in syndication. In some markets the Simpsons are on three times a day, and on CN they play some of their shows over and over all of the time. I like the Eds, but I think they play them a little too often (around eight episodes from Monday to Thursday or something like that, compared to four for Family Guy). And even shows with shorter runs - the Prisoner had 18 episodes and it's still shown weekly on BBC America, and many networks carry the Honeymooners even if it had only 28 episodes!

^^
Sorta true, but the Simpsons is vastly more popular, and the Prisoner is rocket science which virtually requires repeating viewings for a lot of its audience to comprehend it properly. Family Guy is popular, but never THAT popular, and people will eventually get sick of the same episodes. I would have given it a rest nowish, and used the Seth McFarlane stunt to welcome its return shortly prior to whenever new episodes arrive.

I've seen the show 1,000,000 times. Personally I don't get bored and if it's an episode I don't like, then I get up and do something productive. Simple. Overexposure of a show only happens if you don't get up and do/watch something else. No one is forcing anyone to watch it. It pulls in ratings, it's a very fine show, it keeps people watching AS. When I was living in the US this year it was watching Family Guy that got me seriously into Harvey Birdman and Sealab. So there are other knock on benefits from having a popular show dug into the schedules. The more people who watch AS, the more likely it's existence will continue to grow.

For a long time now, I've owned all of the DVD's. So does everyone else I know. Yet we don't feel the need to tune into AS everytime 11 PM rolls around.

Its starting to become like bebop, re-ran over and over and over till u cant stand watching it, granted, bebop is one of my fav shows ever (family guy is good too) but when youve seen every ep like 17 times (literally) u start to get sick of it, BRING NEW SHOWS!!

I prefer watching Bebop again and again than FG. I'm alredy gettin tired of it, i seen it in both language alredy. and i dont have the DVD's I don't have vast pockets..:(
While I think FG is a great show, I have gotten tired of watching it, but I don't see it getting a break anytime soon while it's such a ratings grabber still for AS. Now I just treat it like Futurama or Bebop on AS and not go out of my way to watch it, but i might watch it if I happen to catch it and I have nothing else better to do.
I guess the one reason I'd like to see FG get a break or any other weekly comedy is so that Home Movies could get more time.. That would be cool, of course I'd move ATHF into the 11 hour block, and give HM the midnight spot, just so there isn't as much pressure, but with Sealab coming soon, that won't happen anytime soon, if ever.

Giving it time off of the schedule would be good, since I too have grown a bit weary of it. But if it's a rating goldmine for CN, there's no way that they'll take it off. So I guess we'll have to face the music in this scenario.

I hadn't got to see all the episodes of FG. I just watch whenever I feel like it, so I wouldn't mind. If it did get a rest then they should also give Futurama a rest. I'm tired of Futurama.

Mike Lazzo wants The Simpsons, though given its utter saturation of American TV via syndication I dont know why. Well I know why, but honestly I wouldn't watch.

If they play every episode from the beginning in order without the weird edits they have in syndication, I'd definately watch.
