View Full Version : The best extinct drink

Self-explanatory. Lots of drinks come and go. Some die out for a reason, but the disappearance of others is a mystery... so which one do you miss the most? Personally I miss Crystal Pepsi. It was the best soda/pop ever and I still wonder why Pepsi stopped making it. I used to love Surge too, but for some reason it's not available here any more.

I belive Slice is still around. I've seen it in the vending machine in my old school. Back on topic, I'd have to say Crystal Pepsi. Van Halen was totally awsome in those comercials, or atleast the song.

Slightly O/T - Why won't Coke make a regular (i.e. non-diet) lime Coke? Diet soda has no reason to exist.
That said, didn't I hear a while back that Hi-C's Ecto Cooler is going the way of the dodo? Sad news if true.

I voted "other", because I grew really fond of O.K. Soda. It was an acquired taste, but once acquired, you didn't want to give it up.
To the person above re: Ecto Cooler...yeah, i think so. :\ My girlfriend really loves it (as do I), but we haven't seen it around at all for a few years now.
You know what I need? A Jolt Orange Blast, but they're impossible to find. :| Wet Planet beverages still made them last I checked, but for some reason, the distributors didn't want to give any up to the local stores around here. That makes me angry, because it's the best orange soda ever. Now I have to settle for Mountain Dew LiveWire, and that's seasonal sofar.

They still make Orange Slice.
I had idea that Ecto Cooler was still around. Very tasty.
But I too must go with O.K. Soda. It was great and the ad campaign couldn't be beat if you were a disenfranchised Gen Xer. Tasted good too.

I’m gonna have to go with OK Soda as well, though I’m not sure if I ever REALLY liked it. But one thing is certain the commercials were hilarious. Too bad the concept was probably a bit ahead of its time marketing wise. That and it tasted like a mix of Coke and Minute Maid.

As much as I loved Crystal Pepsi (which was alot), I have to go with Surge. Drank it by the gallon when it was around, and I wish they'd bring it back. Plus, how many other drinks have websites dedicated to getting them back ( www.savesurge.org (http://www.savesurge.org/) )?

I have to go with Surge. Not because I like it, as it tastes like Mountain Dew mixed with goat urine, but because it only cost a quarter when it came out, as opposed to 60 cents for everything else. Being a broke high school student at the time, the choice wasn't that hard.

Technically Sunkist soda isn't extinct - I'd say more like endangered - but I miss it all the same. The one store that I knew was carrying it didn't have any the last time. 'Course, they didn't have any Mountain Dew Code Red either (which they usually do), so I guess they might have just been temporarily out of stock or something.
For those of you who have never had Sunkist soda...you poor, poor things. It's an orange soda, like Orange Slice or Fanta, but somehow it tastes much MUCH better.

Okay, let's clear this extinction thing up.
Sometimes the availablitiy of sodas depends on region and distribution. I.e., Mr. Pibb isn't regionally available (as far as I know) in the Northeast--but it's all over here on the West Coast. I'd never heard of Mr. Pibb until I came out here (for those who know not of it, it takes like Dr. Pepper, even has the same color labelling/design; it's not a wholly generic soda, like a store soda brand, but it's a pretty close "replica" of Dr. Pepper).
Sunkist is not endangered, by any means. It's in full production by Dr. Pepper/7-Up. They even have a website (http://www.sunkistsoda.com). I've had it on the East Coast, and now it's here on the West Coast. It could be a matter of distributors trying to guess what'd sell more and where.
Welch's strawberry and peach. At least, I haven't seen them in years.
I've an empty of Welch's Strawberry Soda right next to my slovenly-kept bed area here. It's readily available at our corner store, as is Welch's Pineapple and Grape.
In all of my 30 years, I've never seen Welch's Peach Soda, though. o_O
Another case of distribution woes comes out of a story for my neverending quest for Jolt Orange Blast.
My old corner store (when I lived in S.F.) got Jolt Orange Blast all the time back in '99 and '00. However, towards the end of 2000 or so, the store stopped getting it for a while, and the proprietor said that they weren't making it anymore. Impossible (and heartbreaking!) that had to be, because as for me, I seriously need the caffeine; otherwise, I'd get some major migraines (if I didn't have my Jolt, which has the most caffeine aside from Mountain Dew of the top tiers of soda brands, I had to take my pills...and Jolt Orange satisifed both that and my thrist). I went on the website and looked, and sure enough, JOB wa still being produced; showed it to the proprietor of the corner store, and he said he didn't know what was going on. So I wrote Wet Planet Beverages and asked them. They said that sometimes they just don't distribute to certain areas, or that they cut/move distribution, so that sometimes certain stores just can't order a specific soda (sales, maybe? I don't know, because JOB was a pretty big seller for that corner store). The woman who wrote me back also said she'd see what she could do for me re: the corner store and its distributor.
Well, for a while after that, the store was able to get a regular supply of JOB, but then it died down, and the dang distributor cut distribution again, and also cut it on the other flavors of Jolt that were more popular than the new ones (favoring the "new" ones they had to push over the popular ones...the new ones being Jolt Red Eye and Jolt Electric Blue, the old tried and trues being Jolt and Jolt Cherry Bomb). -_-
So, it's certainly been a while since I'ev had my beloved Orange Blast. However, last year towards the end of spring, I was gifted with a near-match: Mountain Dew LiveWire (an orange soda version of MD--but it tasts not like MD, but like orange soda, unlike Code Red, which tastes like a mutated version of MD). BUT, the catch with that is that it was seasonal--meaning it was only available during the Summer of 2003.
The heck is THAT?
The people I know and have talked to (before I came to this board) don't like Mountain Dew Code Red, but love LiveWire. And MD keeps Code Red available all year long while making LiveWire seasonal (and I say that it's seasonal now, because they did bring it back for "summer 2004" =__=).
But yeah. Region and distribution often mucks up things for people with tastes that require satisfaction from their preferred sodas of choice. Lots of people would say tha Orange Crush is also extinct, but it's not; it's marginally distributed throughout the U.S., but is readily available in say, Mexico.
You can order lots of hard-to-find sodas at www.sodaking.com (http://www.sodaking.com). They don't have my Orange Blast there, but eh...they have lots of other cool stuff, and I think they have foreign sodas, too.
What I also miss is Orbitz (http://www.lanceandeskimo.com/chefelf/bev_orbitz.shtml). Not carbonated, if I can recall, just...weird. The floating balls in it weren't nasty at all...it was more like one of those Asian drinks (that're so chic now) with jellies in them.

Though it may not be extinct, it's certainly hard to find: Pretty sure Fanta still puts out an apple flavored soda that tastes like carbonated apple juice (at least, the two liters I got were in the same palettes as the rest of the Fanta, and the label was a similar design). I used to get two liters near the Mission in S.F.; seems like distribution of Fanta is geared towards the Hispanic community, since Fanta is all over the place there.
http://www.tomato.com/~bobby/f/www/coke/lib/fanta.html
I didn't know Fanta HAD so many flavors.
Shasta is also kind of hard to find, and I love their Tiki Punch, which is only available in 3 liters (where I find it).
An extinct brand form my childhood is White Rock Soda. My parents used to get that stuff by the caseload, for parties, for just...grabbing a soda out of the fridge. I loved that stuff, and all of its different flavors. :moon: But they don't make it anymore, and cans are hard to come by/very expensive.
In case you haven't realized it yet, I love soda...:anime:
Add: I also miss Hires Root Beer, though it's supposedly still available. As well, I got the wrong URL as to the one I used to browse before; Soda King is great, but I also like www.popsoda.com (http://www.popsoda.com).

more evidence than caffeine is just as addictive as crack.

more evidence than caffeine is just as addictive as crack.Let me clarify for the more simplistic: I was suffering from major migraines before I was prescribed caffeine for them; nothing else worked to alleviate the pain. When I started drinking Jolt Orange, I realized that that was too much caffeine for me (one time I made the mistake of taking a couple of pills with the Jolt at the onset of a migraine and ended up with terrible jitters within a few minutes), so I was able to make a choice: Take the pills, or drink the soda. I preferred to drink the soda, since it served a dual purpose.
And just in case you needed the info, the drug/prescribed caffeine is called Cafergot.

to be honest, surge wasn't all that extinct.. in fact, when a gatti's opened in my town, they actually served it for a while..
but the best drink you'll probably never have is horchata soda.. which isn't sold anywhere in the houston area, though it was.. a very interesting taste going down.
it was just like horchata to the taste. and very yummy.
and it was sold in a better world than we know now.
fanta does sell peach soda.. but not in texas, for texas's state fruit isnt' peach, it's georgia's. and in georgia you will FAIL to find a great grocery chain without peach soda sold by some company.
where they sell fanta watermelon soda.. someone tell me. it's impossible to find watermelon soda in south texas in any quantity. but in austin.. maybe.
in louisiana.. namely hammond.. maybe you'll find something called 'river of dreams' soda. which has watermelon flavor. worth a drink if you can get a hold of some.
if you ever go by south texas, check out the sodas in mexico.. those were worth leaving america for, even if briefly.. just to procure. in fact, most of the time i get some sodas named kaz, barrilitos, jarritos, topo chico, etc.... sodas few americans really know of, or care exists.. but would be worth your while just to try. and flavors like tamarindo and limon.. you'd grow to love.

Slightly O/T - Why won't Coke make a regular (i.e. non-diet) lime Coke? Diet soda has no reason to exist.Because unlike Diet Coke, Coca-Cola doesn't need lime to taste better. It already tastes great. Same was the case for Diet Coke with Lemon. But then Pepsi might have something with their Pepsi Twist. People like to screw with their drinks occasionally.
Incidentally, Pepsi could make a bundle if they brought back Crystal Pepsi with a 90's nostalgia campaign.

Just kidding. Just that I haven't seen Sunkist much in years. And because of that I thought they had stopped making so much of it. But good to see it's alive and well, at least in some parts of the country.

I miss Dr. Slice (Pepsi's version of Dr. Pepper). I used to drink a lot of that stuff when I was 7 or 8 years old.
I'd probably still be drinking it today, but unfortunately, Pepsi stopped making it. If Pepsi wants to compete against Dr. Pepper again sometime in the future, they should rerelease Dr. Slice (Which the chances of that happening are VERY LOW).

We had soda fountains in the 50s and 60s, and there was this great drink that went extinct...the surup was in large jugs, that mixed with the carbinated water, it was cheaper that way, and that is the way non alcholic drinks were sold, like in the drug store I worked at, anyway we came up with a drink that went extinct when the soda fountain thing did..We would add vinilla to a regular five cent coke,,,Yes you could get a small glass of coke for a nickle. anyway, a couple of years ago, the drink became non extinct...Vinilla Coke was brought back, and believe me, it is a great hit...thought I would never taste one again and did last week..Stuart

Woah! I gotta go try to find some of that! lol :p TBH, I've never had Ecto-Cooler or "Screamin' Monkey Tangerine" or whatever they call it, but after this, I have to try some.
Completely missed this thread the first time around.
Brian had looked that up awhile ago and I actually ended up finding some in a supermarket nearby. Still tastes the same. =D
