View Full Version : A Modest Proposal: CN Teen

Cartoon Network has grown much the last 5 years, as has their programming and marketing. However, I feel CN has grown to big forits britches. It is time to expand. Hence I propose a new sister network, CN Teen.
CN has acquired and developed a lot of programs and yet has only 168 hrs of airtime a week. And while they do their best to offer a variety of programming to their diverse audience, they still lose viewers to rivals Nickelodeon and Disney Channel.
CN Teen would allow CN to transfer (and air conjointly) scads of programs to a network aimed towards animation fans ages 13 and over.
CN will continue to broadcast Dexter, PPG, Billy and Mandy, EEE, KND, Courage, Lyoko, Hamtaro, Sitting Ducks, Cramp Twins, Yu-Gi, Pokemon, new-age Transformers, Scooby, and other kiddie shows. And this would allow CN to develop more shows for the pre-teen crowd (likeKrypto and Imaginary Friends)
While over on CN Teen, older viewers could watch "forgotten" shows like:
Batman: The Animated Series
Superman: The AnimatedSeries
Batman Beyond
Samurai Jack
He-Man
X-Men: Evolution
The Maxx
in addition to modern hit shows like Teen Titans, Justice League, TMNT, Megas XLR. Adult Swim would be expanded and anchor the evenings.
CN Teen could develop new programming from DC Comics like "Birds of Prey" or bring the Vertigo Universe to life. CN Teen may be able to rope in some Marvel properties like Daredevil, The Fantastic Four, Punisher, a JL-quality Avengers, or even blockbusters like Spidey and the X-Men! They could even develop a long-running Star Wars series w/Lucas and Genndy. Or develop series based on independent comic titles like The Savage Dragon, Hellboy, The Leagueof Extraordinary Gentlemen, or even SPAWN.
There are precedents:
1. Nick created Noggin and GAS
2. ABC has ABCFamily
3. CN created Boomerang to house their classics like the Flintstones...
I strongly believe that by 2010, CN will create a new network aimed for older animation fans. Give me CN Teen TODAY!

Hmmm... Yeah, that sounds like it might be a good idea in theory, but I'm not sure how well it could be pulled off... What you're essentially asking for is Boomerang with some elements of Adult Swim thrown in, and I'm just not sure how profitable that would be...

Your idea of "CN Teen" sounds a lot like the UK Toonami channel. I'm sure a Toonami-type channel would do well, but it just hasn't happened yet.

Well, Toonami does (on record) target more teenagers than any other portion of the channel, while Adult Swim truly doesn't mind teenage ratings...
Theoretically, you could cut off AS Saturdays and throw Samurai Jack, He-Man, X-Men: Evolution, Batman Beyond, and such shows on Toonami post-11PM...

I don't think teens watch that much TV. I heard it's very hard to market a TV station solely towards teens.

CN Teen, it has a nice ring to it.
There needs to be comedies though... and CN doesn't have too many comedies for teens. Maybe they could jack some from MTV (since they don't show them) or somewhere else. Any ideas?
That Buffy series seems like a shoe-in for sure a network.

Well the weekend schedule is a little bit more difficult to come up with but I've got weekdays how I think it should be at the moment.
I tried to put in some comedies and I picked some ones I think would do well and others that just NEED to be there for the sake of them being somewhere.

Such a network would open up more possibilites for sure. There would finally be a place for anime comedies and dramas that aren't action shows like Fruits Basket and Love Hina... and dare I say... Ranma 1/2 someday? Nah that's asking too much I suppose but it would find it's audience for sure (even though they wouldn't want to go to the trouble of editing it).
It's a shame ACTION got Vandread, it would have been a good show for such a channel.

Yeah, it might be a good idea, but still (with the exception of Adult Swim) most of that is action. And there are stll kids younger than 13 that watch this stuff. I'm not sure if it would be a good idea, or a bad one.

True but the problem with comedy shows is there just aren't enough that are good for teens. So you have to throw in the Adult Swim stuff and then what else is there? There are a few CC's and Freakazoid... I suppose 2 Stupid Dogs could work.
DuckDodgers33
07-11-2004, 03:43 PM
Yeah, I suppose so. CN Teen has to have AS. But if there's Adult Swim on CN Teen, would they get rid of the AS on Cartoon Network? They could also take Cow & Chicken or something and basically remake it for CN Teen.

Would this hurt regular CN?(if come into light)

07-11-2004, 10:15 PM
In a way it may be a more sensible then a just action channel.
It more or less sounds like getting rid of the more child oriented programs. But what would they show while all the teens are at school? Baby LooneyTunes, and why not, plenty of teens like Baby LooneyTunes too. And is there any doubt CN would put Scooby Doo on there from day one. Suddenly it's the CN we have now.
Yeah, it might be a good idea, but still (with the exception of Adult Swim) most of that is action. And there are stll kids younger than 13 that watch this stuff. I'm not sure if it would be a good idea, or a bad one.Whether or not kids watch something doesn't make it for kids automatically.
My younger brother watches Family Guy. Does that make Family Guy a kids show?

I think this could really work.
Make CN definitively kids (as it's been moving towards anyway) but still have Adult Swim (ratings are ratings) and throw on some classics. Make Miguzi the main action block of the network and drop Toonami from the channel.
As to what would be on Saturday nights then... I say please some strange fanboys and make a new SVES with SD Gundam, Rave Master, Pokemon, Jackie Chan, Teen Titans, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and in the last hour MEGAS and JLU (being as they are the most Adult Swim friendly shows on such a block) putting all those action shows on Saturday free's up some weekday night space for something quirky like Duel Masters (which deserves a daily slot for sure).
Have CN Teen be the channel that carries the CC's kids never cared much for, older comedies, some classics, Toonami as the main weekday action block again, and an evening line-up with TV-PG and TV-14 content. To help launch the network they could pick up some anime comedies as well as rebuy Gundam Wing and Outlaw Star from Bandai (uncut of course) the old teen favorites... and put shows like Case Closed and Inuyasha in prime time and shows like Futurama and Home Movies in the pre-prime time hours similar to where the Simpsons are on Fox. They'd have to build on the comedy portion the most because it'd be easy to do a schedule chop full of action cartoons... As for what to put in the day time when teenagers are out... OLD SKOOL of course. College student love their Thundercats and GI-Joe afterall. Adult Swim (as in the comedies) would only technically air on Sunday's on this channel but it's shows would be throughout the line-up on weekdays and Saturday as well. This channel could air the shows Adult Swim does in prime time rather than after midnight... and IMO that would rock!
CN is looked upon as kids channel anyway, just let it be that.
It'd be easier to just make a Toonami channel like the UK did when CNX didn't pan out and I wouldn't be suprise if the same didn't happen here but it would be much more benefitial overall to find a way to make this Cartoon Network for the slightly older crowd work.

Hm...that sounds reasonable.
But unfortunately, some teens don't like anime :( (yeah, some of my classmates hate anime). So for the primetime block, have a little break of anime by putting a show (like...an encore of Batman, or...something that you can get from MTV, like Beavis and Butthead?)

Whether or not kids watch something doesn't make it for kids automatically.
My younger brother watches Family Guy. Does that make Family Guy a kids show? No. But if it's CN Teen it shouldn't just have shows that are less kid-based that come from CN. It should also have some new originals, with still having some CN content. I know you can't list these shows since they don't exist, but that's all.

Might as well call it the CarTeen Network. Yeah, they could also make originals, instead of getting old shows.
But, I never see it happening in my life. I'm not even fond to the idea.

Not only can we not list them because they don't exist yet, but they'd only be on a few times a week while they are premiering so weekdays would have to hold it's own on current programing and maybe a few acquisitions or re-acquisitions.

Some fresh programs would definentily be the way to make this network a success but a little eye candy and some fan favorites doesn't hurt... and intricately tieing it to both the Toonami and Adult Swim brands will help a lot as well... those AS fans are always looking for more air time for their favorite shows afterall.
Buffy the Animated Series could help kick off the network and maybe they could get Sony to continue Spider-Man for them and work with Teletoon to put Undergrads back in production. There are still some options, and then of course there always the "where the heck did that gem come from?" which CN likes to use as a trump card at least once every year.

We don't need CN teen, most of the shows you listed would not be on because the rights all expired.

Most?
No, just some. Gundam Wing, Gundam OVA's, and Outlaw Star are the only re-buys and those would be welcomed by the general public especially if they are uncut.
Most of the line-up is stuff CN already has but I threw in Tenchi GXP, Kiddy Grade, and s.Cry.ed because they suit such a network quite well.
At least 95% of that line up is stuff CN already has and is in the vault or isn't shown often.
And of course we need CN Teen, you want to see Kenshin again don't you? (and at a decent time)
You're being sarcastic, right? Because that's what "A Modest Proposal" means. I clicked on this thread expecting a tongue-in-cheek funny. WHERE IS THE FUNNY?

I think it's a good idea I love your line up, (I've never even heard of some of the shows) I'm 15 and I watch a LOT of tv, Buffy the Animated series? Does that exist, that sounds cool. Would this be on basic or would you have to order it, Am I thinking too forward?

CN Teen sounds like a proposal for a Toonami channel to me. Since when do teens only watch action shows? Nix this idea and develop something more well rounded.

Nix this idea and develop something more well rounded.Dang it CookieS I already said there just isn't enough programing out there for more comedy but I put the stuff that most teens would watch given their original air dates or their content.
There's nothing wrong with a slightly action heavy schedule as long as the shows are good all around.
What more do you want?

Toonami type programming is already leaning towards males in general. Think of something that offers a balanced feel, and don't tell me "Sailor Moon". We want balance, not gender extremes. Also there HAS to be some comedy you could use, or drama.

There aren't too many animated dramas out there...
I put Fruits Basket on there though, that's a start.
Love Hina and Fruits Basket back to back should interest the ladies a bit (though Love Hina is quite boy friendly as you might imagine).

I'd probably call it satire.
Maybe this is what you were expecting.
I thought plagiarism was going to be easier.
A Modest Proposal for preventing the older children in
tv land, from being burdened by childish cartoons, and for
making a beneficial use of toons for the viewing publick.
by Dr. Aqua Dementia, esquire
It is a melancholy object to those, who have flipped through old tv guides, or traveled in the internet, when they see the streets, the roads and cabbin-doors crowded with un-aired programs of the action cartoon variety, followed by three, four, or six animated characters, all in rags, and importuning every passenger for an alms.
These animated series, instead of being able to work for their honest livelihood, are forced to employ all their time in begging sustenance for their helpless toons who, as they grow old, either turn into thieves for want of work, or leave their dear native series, appearing as guest characters on Static Shock, or sell themselves in commercials for household products.
I think it is agreed by all parties, that this prodigious number of toons in the tape archives, or tide up in licensing deals with their distributors, and frequently of their production companies, is in the present a deplorable state of American television, a very great additional grievance; and therefore whoever could find out a fair, cheap and easy method of making these animated characters sound and useful members of basic cable, would deserve so well of the publick, as to have his statue set up for a preserver of all that is holy.
But my intention is very far from being confined to provide only for the toons of recent series: it is of a much greater extent, and shall take in the whole number of cartoons of a certain era, who appeal is to a demographic that in effect is little able to support them, as those who demand our charity at comic book stores.
As to my own part, having turned my thoughts for many years, upon this important subject, and maturely weighed the several schemes of our projectors, I have always found them grossly mistaken in their computation.
It is true, a cartoon character just dropt from its series, may be supported by circulating vhs tapes, for a solar year, with little other appearance: at most not above the value of two shillings, which the recording party would certainly get, or the value in blank tapes lawfully exchanged by the begging party; and it is exactly at the one year old mark that I propose to provide for them in such a manner, as, instead of being a charge upon their copyright holders, or the Cartoon Network, or wanting food and raiment for the rest of their lives, they shall, on the contrary, contribute to the entertainment, feeding, and partly to the clothing of many thousands.

CN Teen Weekdays Remix
16 Hours of Action
8 Hours of Comedy
I know that's twice as much aciton as comedy but most of action is on when casual viewers aren't watching anyway... I just wanted action to take up prime time because they are shows that get shoved to later hours most of the time and deserve a good slot for once. The method here is to put action where there's comedy on CN and comedy when they're is aciton on CN for the most part but then [adult swim] is just it's own thing. I could throw in repeats for the comedies in [adult swim] but I figured CN airs them enough and just giving them solid slots in the evening would suffice (as in the big ratings winners Futurama, Family Guy, and a chance for the other prime time comedies to see the light of day again).
Weekends will highlight fresh content and movies, but like I said before. Weekdays needs to stand on it's own.

Weekends would have more exclusive and original programing with Sunday's [adult swim] having the same premieres as the one on CN. Saturdays would be a movie night (so that CN's Toonami wouldn't suffer much ratings wise) and Fridays would be action premieres in prime time (to give action fans something to watch when CNF is on).
Some weekend exclusives include Kiddy Grade, Tenchi GXP, s.Cry.ed, Gundam OVA's, FLCL, Toonami's premieres, Adult Swim's premieres, specials, and some original content.
As for some comedy aqusitions... don't kill me... I think Game Over could work. It's only merrit was the video game references and teenage boys would be way into that. It could air on weekends only depending on how many episodes were actually made before it went out of production.
I'd also like to see Undergrads and Spider-Man from MTV come back and they'd hit home quite well.
Also... what's the content of Down Town? I know it's made by the guys who now do MEGAS so it could be fun to have.
Unfortunately most of the anime dramas and comedies rest in ADV's hands but maybe they could do some joint cable rights deal some day. I think RightStuff's Comic Party dub would be great for this channel. Thus far I haven't found anything that would deem it innapropriate for prime time on a network that allows TVPG-TV14 content in prime time.
In general, Saturday would be more action heavy and Sunday would be more comedy heavy. Sunday would include classic comedies and Saturday would include classic action shows.
More original comedies would be made to fill out the comedy portion of the network better and help that portion expand. It would be great if they could get some Nick Toons that Nick isn't airing now or at least get Animaniacs! and Pinky and the Brain back but for now CN would have to use what they have or could easily acquire (or reacqurie)

That wouldn't be to bad of an idea. More like an all Toonami network.

Where's Kare Kano? And SEED? And why does KotZ even have to be there at all?

Ugh... I was trying to detract from the Toonami Network persona. Toonami would just be the main youth action block on this network like Miguzi is for CN now.
Still not enough comedy eh? Well I can't do much better. Every other comedy I feel has it's place on CN still and could easily fit the schedule somewhere if it isn't already on there or overplayed.
I'd of course love an all Toonami Network but an all action channel isn't a fair trade really. CN has more comedies and comedies in the most prodominant spots and CNT would have more action and action in the most prodominant spots.
CNT basically is CNX without the live action junk...
I just can't make everyone happy, it's just not possible. When ever I make a Toonami [adult swim] hybrid I leave out the comedy and people are like "but you need the comedy" so I make something that isn't a Toonami channel and people are like "there isn't enough comedy"... Honestly... CN has enough comedy and Comedy Central has enough comedy... action cartoons need a place where they can be shown at the prime slots in a schedule.
So if it's too action heavy, then deal with it. Or make some suggestions people. But there are probably more accessible comedies out there, so tell me what it is I'm missing here.

Where's Kare Kano? And SEED? And why does KotZ even have to be there at all?SEED is on weekends, Kare Kano MUST DIE (or it could replaced something in prime time from 7-8PM), KotZ has it's fans still (I have no idea why)... there wasn't really anything better to air at 6:30... that could be Transformers I suppose but it's already at 6:30 on CN anyway.
Where's Kare Kano? And SEED? And why does KotZ even have to be there at all?I agree with you. SEED and Kare Kano are a necessity for a CN TEEN..
CnTeen just sounds like an angsty type of block..Perhaps just animate all the WB primetime shows.. ..

Think about how many places get Boomerang, Toon Disney, Nicktoons TV (does it exist? It was on Nick's website last year). If you take shows of of CN and put it on CN Teen, many fans will be angry that they have a very little chance of seeing those shows again.

Your saying that like most of the shows are still on CN? (or on more than once a week).
Obviously if CN didn't put in effort to get this on at least the basic packages of satalite or digital cable then it wouldn't do well, but if they put the effort into getting providers to host this channel then it could be a big success. Boomerang is really a niche thing, but if you have [adult swim] hits like Futurama and Family Guy on in prime time accompanied by Dragonball Z, Inuyasha, Cowboy Bebop, and a bunch of other HUGE hits from CN... I think they'd be interested.
[adult swim] would still be on CN and maybe Toonami would still be on CN (just on Saturday nights only still) but look at all the good programing on there that isn't on CN and probably will never be on CN again even though they own some of it forever.
Why does everyone like Kare Kano?
SEED would be on there but it would still have weekend premeires until the show is all reruns (in which it would obviously get multiple runs on a daily slot).
