Boy Writes Apology in Blood for Dozing in Class (http://channels.aimtoday.com/news/story.jsp?floc=FF-RTO-PLS&idq=/ff/story/0002/20040621/0430022682.htm)

TOKYO (Reuters) - A Japanese teenager was forced by his teacher to write an apology in blood after dozing in the classroom, the school's principal said on Monday.

The teacher later went to high school principal Hiroaki Dan and confessed what he had done, Dan told Reuters.

The teacher had apologized to the 17-year-old boy and his parents, Dan said, confirming a local media report of the incident, which happened last Thursday.

He said the boy was taken to the staff room of the school in Fukuoka City, southern Japan, after being caught asleep during a lesson. The 40-year-old male teacher handed the boy a box-cutter and paper and told him to write an apology in blood.

The teacher left the student, who then cut his finger and began to write an apology using his own blood.

Other teachers in the staff room did not notice what was happening, Dan said.

"To ask a student to write in their own blood is something I just can't imagine," he said.

He said the boy was back in school, and neither he nor his parents had asked to switch teachers. The teacher involved is expected to resume classes in a few days, Dan said.

The incident comes on the heels of an attack in which an 11-year-old girl killed a classmate by slashing her throat with a box cutter, also in southern Japan.
...and to think, in my day, if you slept in class, teachers used to drop heavy books on your desk right next to your head.... though, I guess the kid will think twice about sleeping in school again =X

With stuff like this happening, that weird alternate universe of Battle Royale seems more real.

Now imagine if he had a cell phone that went off- he'd probably get stuck in a guillotine.

wow.. That's one psycho teacher..

I'm glad I didn't have any teacher like that when I'm in class.

Sleep ain't worth spilling in blood, at least in my book.. or is it?

Well, I don't see how anyone could be careless enough to get caught, but I guess I'm having one of the last initials and sitting behind the fatkid does come in handy sometimes.

Wow. Back when I was in school the worst we got for sleeping was sprayed in the face with water. Although that did make a few kids smack their heads against the wall, which is always entertaining.

It's incredibly hard to write in blood

it's not a contant even flow, and then it usualy gets smudged..and then the cut begins to dry up, so you have to stab it again or in another spot...

besides it's essentialy illegeable due to the fact that the blood seeps thru and spreads on the paper...

Remember he's writing in Kanji or Katakanna, where its mostly simple lines.

I think it would be harder to writer in english letters.

That's sick. And that last line? Southern Japan needs to work on their school systems.

I actually like it. Reminds me of the old days where students had to write on blackboards until their arms fell off and got smacked around with rulers. Not that I condone violence, but it was effective.

But the teacher was going about it all wrong. Should have used a tourniquet if he wanted a constant flow...

That makes me think of Harry Potter's detention with Umbridge in OotP. Just sick and wrong. *mental note: don't sleep in class*

Wow...that's harsh. I'm surprised the teacher didn't get fired. I know not to sleep in class, because everytime I do something goes wrong.

I used to sleep in class a lot. In High School I remember I had to get up at like 7 in the morning. When else am I gonna sleep? And don't say at night cause I needed to do homework.

that's exactly what first ran through my head when I read this story.

There is some weird irony that in Japan 11 year old girls slit their classamates thoats, their are suicide clubs, and teachers make students write things in blood. Yet there are almost 12,000 less deaths due to gun violence and the like than there is in America.

Not that I condone violence, but it was effective. When I was in school, a local private school still used those practices. I don't think it ever worked. Of course, most of the kids were preppy, 'think they're in the ghetto' brats that usually came to school drunk and/or high, so...

Tough love bulids character. :D But, making a student write in their own blood? Yeah, little bit twisted, have to say, but I guess the lack of any real punishment (i.e. firing) may be due to some kind of culture difference. The only thing I can say is good thing the guy didn't do it in the US. He would've been nailed to the wall. Yeesh.

I've never understood how people can sleep in those horribly uncomfortable desks...not too good on your back or something.

I've never understood how people can sleep in those horribly uncomfortable desks...not too good on your back or something. Not to mention those uncomfortable chairs!
"Mrs. Krabappel! I'm having back spasms!"
"I lost all feeling in the left side of my body..."

I don't think I've ever slept in school. Always nervous I'll get caught and get lectured to in front of the whole class. Plus I usually got enough sleep anyway.

Ha! What an amatuer. The secret to sleeping in class without drawing attention to yourself is to prop up your arm under one of your cheeks. You then support your head, either with a fist or an open palm, then squint your eyes (not close, mind you) until you are comfortable with the amount of light that touches your eye. You then have to set your writing hand on auto-pilot in order to create the illusion of you actually doing something. And if you get called on to answer a question, remember that you should go with either "Columbia" or "Hemmingway". This has always worked for me.

As far as punishments go, I had a World History teacher who opted for humiliation over torture by taking polaroids of unsuspecting sleepers. The next day on the blackboard, the pic would be there with a witty, yet satirical caption underneath. Needless to say, there were quite a few students who were willing to barter anything to have their pic taking down. The teenage ego is such a fragile thing, isn't it? :D

Well...this is a good thing about the USA. One time I closed my eyes for like two minutes (thinking about something. I was either excited about a movie or thinking about a girl). Something hit me with my backpack.

I'm glad that my teachers don't care if I sleep in class.:) If I lived in Southern Japan I'd probably be gone on the first day.

Gun violence was just replaced with other violence in Japan. In the US, a disturbed youth might go on a shooting spree. In Japan, they might beat a person to death with a baseball bat, or decapitate them, leaving the head display at the gate to the school. And really that's just scratching the surface. Read the reality based manga "Confidential Confessions" by Reiko Momochi if you want to get a fuller picture without pawing through Mainichi Daily News.

Back to the matter at hand, it's damn shame some schools in Japan still haven't broken themselves fully of this kind of stuff (it's in someways a bit more toned down.) It'll take another generation or a rash of deathes (not suicides, because there are plenty of students offing themselves because of this abuse, but deathes at the hands of teachers) before it gets stomped out.

See, what I do is rest my head on one of my arms, and use the other one to hold open a book to make it look like I'm reading sideways. That's how I read normally anyway, so it works out.

Alternate:

Pull you seat back then put an arm down on the edge of a desk. Next, rest your head down on your arm, and use your remaining hand to hold your book down in front of your face. Wait to get called on, read or answer then resume position. Now that your've got your teachers trust (well, maybe) feel free to close your eyes until anyone gets suspicious.

Don't know what to tell you if your teacher is angered by bad posture.

I alwyas just lied and said I had a headache. Being so pale, most just thought I was sick 24/7 anyway, so it worked out fine. Besides, those tricks wouldn't work for me. I snore. :D
