Happy Canada Day, everyone! :anime:

How do you all plan to celebrate? I'm listening to Rush's latest CD, Feedback. :D

Is this the day that Canada won its independence from the U.K.? If my history is correct (please correct me if it isn't!), Canada was granted independence from the U.K. in 1867 (though the King or Queen of England is still Head of State), and the current Canadian constitution was drafted in 1982 (though Quebec is the only province which has yet to sign it)...

Nope. :) The holiday was established by statue in 1879 as Dominion Day. The holiday commemorates the day in 1867 that the first colonies of British North America entered Confederation as the Dominion of Canada.

Hey, grrl!! :)

We're still part of the Common Wealth. We've never delcared Independence from Britain. Thankfully. They are our cloest ties to rich history.

WE'LL NEVER LEAVE!!!!!! :D

*hugs Canada* :D

Heh, I spent my Canada Day in the old city of Montreal where I saw more Fleur de Lis (sp?) flying out the windows rather than Maple Leafs.

Come to think of it, I saw more Greek and Portugese flags being flown all week, too. I wonder why. :p

Anyhoo, a much-belated Happy Hoser Day to everyone!

No, really, why? Why would flags of Greece and Portugal be in the middle of Canada?

:confused:Because of the soccer Euro championship...

Anyway, one question: what day exactly is Canada day?? Cos most people here wished it on several different days... is it every frigging day of July? :D

We're a small, proud, but confused country. :p

(The official day is July 1st, though.)

Fellow USAers, we should be greatful to our friends to the North...Some of the most magnificant scenery on earth is in Banf-Jasper National Park and the Canadian Government has done a great job in keepingit in pristine shape, last time I was there...Never been far North, but that is also supposed to be spetacular as well. Happy Canada to all....Stuart

Well.. the Bloc DID win here. :( Don't be so shocked to see more fleur de lys flags than maple leaf flags. Come up my way and you'll see me draped in red and white like mad. :D

I'm a fan girl of my own country. :D

Beautiful city, Montreal. I can't remember what the name of the hotel I always stay at is, but it's got fantastic curved windows, and a great view of the town. ::sighs:: I do miss being able to spend weekends up there...

Anyway, if a humble American is allowed to give a belated toot, then here it is. Happy post post post post post (how many was that?) Canada Day to my northern neighbors. :D

Timmy's being silly in yer signature. You said, "oohh la la!! Very good, my friend", but he just HAD to elaborate. :p :D

Welcome to Canada. :D

Of course, you could have said copain. ;) Personally, when speaking to people in French, I usually use copain when I talk about my guy friends and copine when I talk about my girlfriends. Ami and amie sound the same in French so it sometimes confuses people on who you're talking aboot.

Copain in the literal sense means boyfriends; copine in the literal sense means girlfriend, so you'd normally hear people talking about their lovers when they say copain/copine. :)

I'm having a hard time reading through "The Chamber of Secrets". I cannot STAND Harry, but I'm reading it because I love a lot of the secondary characters.

Well.. the Bloc DID win here. :(I'm not surprised. And as a memento, I cut down a Gilles Duceppe campaign sign from the dirty Montreal waterfront part of town and brought it home with me. It's gonna be a dart board in a short while. Whoo! :)

Dedicate one shot to me. :D

In our riding, Portneuf, Bloc won.

I voted Liberal. They have better sounding PROMISES. It's not like they'll keep 'em, but they sound good.

Fellow USAers, we should be greatful to our friends to the North...
Don't worry, the USA loves Canada! :D We're just happy to share one of the longest borders on Earth with a fellow peaceful, freedom-loving country. Does anyone realize how long the US-Canadian border actually is? From the northern tip of Alaska all the way down and across the Great Lakes, up to the eastern tip of Maine. If you had a James Bond-style car that could also boat across water, how many hours would it take to drive across the complete US-Canadian border? :p

TimTwoFace

Well, remember that even though Alaska and Canada share a common boundary, it is broken up for a couple hundred or thousand kilometres along the Pacific. Anyway, I know that it's approximately 3000 miles across the continent (if you're not going further east than the Eastern time zone...which Canada does but the US doesn't), so it'd probably take a good 48 or 72 hours non-stop to do it.

I live two minutes from the border, myself. I'll wave "yo" as you drive by. :D

Which province do you live in? I live way down south in Austin, Texas -- the closest I've ever been to Canada is Kansas City, Missouri! I have been to Mexico before though... you know, our "other neighbor" in North America :p

I live in British Columbia, just a stone's throw away from Washington state. Go me! :)

Kansas City is the furthest north you've been? Oh my...well you must've headed far south at some point, then. Never been there...though I've been to Texas (Dallas/Ft. Worth airport) and Mexico a number of times over the years.

In the next five years, take two weeks, drive north, go west or east, it is a wonderful place to see, rich in geography and history...And the western moutains are as beautiful as places like Yellowstone and Yosemetee..It is worth the trip....Canada is a wonderful place, Each time I have been there, I have had a good time, and itis worth the effort..Stuart. And it is a good five hundred miles, (750 kilometers) due north, for me, shorter if I go thru Detroit, but I prefere the west, only because I have not spent enough time in the east. I understand the coast of Nova Scotia, and some great sites in Montreal are spectacular..
