View Full Version : A Funi Bit of Info About Conan

The lady who works at the local anime store was called by a Funi rep the other day. After answering some survey type questions, she asked them a few questions, mainly, what precipitated the name changes in the Case Closed. Turns out, though Funi desperately tried to convince TMS otherwise, TMS insisted that names needed to be changed in order for Conan to work in the states (personal speculation: all that tween work they did for US studios gave them some dumb ideas.) Looks like another Case Closed. So, with a keen eye for details, one truth prevails! :p

PS: It was 20th Century Fox, who owned the rights to the Conan the Barbarian cartoon, who put the fuss up about the name Detective Conan.

Well, I was right about this one. I knew it had to be that though, besides the fact that "cooperation with our Japanese counterparts" can't mean much else than that, Funimation almost never did name changes, even in DBZ.

Of course, as a reporter, I just have to say, "at least, that's FUNi's side of the story; TMS has no comments yet." :p

Y'know, anime companies really need to send their people over here so they can find out the whole story, instead of looking at stuff from PR people.

I believe it. FUNimation rarely changes the names of the main characters of any of their shows. They do change the spellings from time to time though.

People always blame the distributor but lately it seems the Japanese companies are the ones that are making the stupid changes to anime... Toei's Sailor Moon, TMS' Conan, and Sunrises G Gundam and (most likely, but unconfirmed) Gundam Seed.

Makes me wonder if Toei will force any changes on One Piece other than 4kids usual quota. Probably not given that by the time 4kids is done there will be nothing objectionable in the show except their own inuendo.

, one truth prevails! :p .
Can I speak for the people who have seen D.C. before that phrase beame the tag-line?

Orgioanly, it was "There is only one truth..." Which IMHO, makes Much, Much more sence.

"One Truth Prevails" is much more fun to say.

well If 20th Century Fox is all in a huff about Detective Conan, and they want to sue, then you can bet that Conan O'Brien isn't too far behind..

Why do I say this? Well First off being an objective observer is that if 20th Century Fox says that Funi or TMS did this to violate copyrights, well they are so short memoried they forgot another case... and that was within the Last year...

Or does anyone remember Spike TV?

That's right it's funny that I mention this, besides Conan isn't about as unique if they had Called the Young Lad David, or George or Harry. but See I myself like this name.. after all it's very fun to listen how it's Conan this , or Conan that..

but come on folks.. 20th Century Fox wanting to sue over a name? Well if that's the case, I'm still waiting for the apostle who has the same first name I do, and he's been dead 2000 years..(and no my name isn't Jesus..)

but at least now we know the rest of the story of how Conan came to be.. and beside I like the little guy.. He's smart, funny, and he's a very logical thinker.. (if he was older and wasn't involved with Rachel moore, Velma Dinkley (from Scooby Doo would probably be his girlfriend..)

but then again you know.. Rachel and Conan sound like a cool team to have around.. and besides Like I said, whoever did this show, got the formula right, a bit of murder, a bit of mayhem, some twists and quirks a little logic, and it all adds up as fun..

I say keep the name Conan.. it rocks..

Well, you know, if anything, having Detective Conan involved in a legal dispute would give it a boost in popularity. I remember when Conan O'Brian sued the Pets.com dog for ripping off Triumph the Insult Comic dog. It ended up making the pets.com mascot more popular. I heard that even though pets.com is out of business, the mascot got bought by another company.

Anyway, if name changes really do help make an anime more popular than I guess I don't mind it that much, at least they keep the original music and don't cut out too much footage.

Yeah...to market auto insurance to people with bad credit (http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/siliconvalley/3490572.htm?1c).

Blech that dog is still around.

Still this is very silly that Funi can't call Case Closed by its real name, Detective Conan. Maybe people wouldn't confuse it for Conan O Brian if AS didn't air it at the same time the show is on. Maybe people wouldn't confuse it for Conan the Barbarian if people understood that he is a teenager trapped in a kid's body.

Well, you know, now that you mention it I could see how one could confuse the two, I mean, Detective Conan is about an adult trapped in a kid's body where Conan the Barbarian is about a kid trapped in an adult's body...well, at least his intelligence is that of a child...

Before "Dave the Barbarian", Super Dave Osbourne had his own cartoon. I'm sure there've been many cartoon Jacks before Samurai Jack. Come on, "Conan". Even the Spike TV thing. It's just being silly. Those names are too common for anyone to really own them. It's not even niche (in terms of the chances of it being in the title of a show) like Xena or Buffy... or Seinfeld.

Well, I hate it for them. It looks like it was an out of control desicion costing FUNi face.
