View Full Version : Adult Swim Reference in Ultimate X-Men

(If you don't know, Marvel created a new universe about five years ago, The Ultimate Universe. Titles include Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate Fantastic Four, Ultimate X-Men, and various other ventures, retelling and rebooting the universe for the new millineium)

I just started picking up Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Spider-Man via individual issues (collecting the previous ones via trades). In Ultimate X-Men #47 (Came out today), there's a scene of Iceman and Angel training with a football. Iceman gets the ball away from Angel...

"Eat it, Harvey Birdman!"

Just find it funny that Ultimate X-Men referenced Adult Swim... and that Adult Swim thus exists in the Ultimate Marvel Universe.

Yet another reference that's completely unfunny because it has no context or relevence.

I think it was because they both had wings...

and I'd kill for Marvel to make an Ultimate Aqua Teen

Side note - Its WB/DC so it'd be DC Comics who would do anything with any Adult Swim properties like they have done with Space Ghost.

Also, this doesn't mean that much considering there's a ton of pop culture references in The Ultimates.

Yet another reference that's completely unfunny because it has no context or relevence. And "par for the course" regarding Marvel Comics authors' general writing skills...;)

and I'd kill for Marvel to make an Ultimate Aqua Teen But then that would mean that both the Aqua Teen characters and Adult Swim would exist within the Marvel Ultimate Universe, causing it to implode.

The Ultimate Universe imploded when the same writer can't figure out if The Ultimates (Avengers) or the Fantastic Four came first...

The Ultimate universe imploded when they decided to make Jean Grey a slut, Colossus gay(I have no problem with gay guys, but Colossus is a 30 year old character who has had numerous relationships with girls), and Cyclops a jackass.

This isn't the place for this (be glad this isn't CBC, otherwise I'd hit you with a page-long response to this), but the point of the Ultimate Universe wasn't to write characters the same way they've been written for 30+ years. Ultimate Colossus isn't 616 (mainstream Marvel) Colossus, therefore 616 Colossus being straight in no way means Ultimate Colossus can't be gay.

Damn it Knux, you beat me to it. That line cracked me up, but also pulled me out of the story. So it's a win/lose situation.

And the Ultimate Universe, for the record, is OK.

Ha, that's kind of a funny line, little sad I didn't get to just read it straight from the book though.

The Ultimate universe is basically a mixed bag of the good and bad:

Ultimate Spiderman-Excellent
Ultimate X-men-Great, but has problems
Ultimates-Good but has a lot of flaws
Ultimate Minies-Usually good
Ultimate FF-Iffy, boderline bad, but enjoyable

I read that and thought it was cool in the context it was used. Iceman, a teen like many of us here, watches Adult Swim. It's fun!

Except the fact that Harvey Birdman existed before Adult Swim.

Yeah but since this is 2004 and Iceman watches it now it would be on Adult Swim.

Except the fact that Harvey Birdman existed before Adult Swim.Birdman did, but we can assume Iceman's not referencing a character that, for his generation, only showed up a few times on Cartoon Roulette on Toonami. Harvey Birdman, on the other hand, has been just on AS.

I remember watching Harvey Birdman before Cartoon Roulette and I was probaly 3 or 4. I don't really think its impossible that...

WAIT, WHAT AM I DOING. This is stupid.

Question: Prior to Adult Swim, was he called Harvey Birdman? I was always under the impression that, pre-AS, it was just Birdman, not Harvey Birdman. Which would indicate that Iceman is talking about Adult Swim.

He was just Birdman, Harvey was added for HBAAL

I mean calling it Birdman Attourney at law seems a bit lacking, usualy lawyers have two names, a first and a last....

With the show the joke was that Birdman wasn't a superhero name but a last name which does sort of sound like a last name a lawyer would have, and to drive this idea home they gave him a first name. This is all just a rough idea of what I think probably happened.

Besides Peanut wasn't called Peanut in the original Birdman...

and in the original Birdman, Mentok looked..very un-sexy...and yeah...un-sexyI know his new character design is a lot cleaner, but I don't see the ladies tuning in for the M-man, although I haven't had a date on a Sunday for a long time. Good you give me some image links of Pre HBATL Peanut? I seem to be blanking on him being on the original Birdman.

His name was Harvey when he hosted SGC2C. And those were pre-AS episodes.

True, but I know Ultimate Iceman, and I don't think his pop-culture knowledge is that thorough.

A character in GLOBAL FREQUENCY (published by DC Wildstorm) said something was "teh suck".

But that was probably just from online speak. Another character also said "We're fuxor3d"
