View Full Version : Open call for marketing manager- Publicity stunt, cry for help, or something else?
First, I'd like to say I'm really surprised there hasn't been more discussion about the open call for a new marketing manager.
Second, what's your opinion on this, and the fact that it's been announced publicly?
And third, how many unqualified people do you think will apply?

I swear I'm in the running for it.

Seems logical to me that they would approach recruiting for this new position via the airwaves. The type of person looking to work in the "industry" would know to look at Turner Jobs for a position like this, but by broadcasting it to the entire fan base they do stand much greater chance of piquing the interest of a larger pool of (legitimate)applicants who actually watch the product. Honestly having an AS fan who is also qualified for the position would be best for all involved, viewers and Williams Street alike.
Of course, the massive influx of comedy resumes should be overwhelming. I noticed in one thread at AS.com a couple people lamenting about not meeting the requirements for the position and a mod encouraging them to go for it anyway as it "couldn't hurt". So it would seem to me they are also looking to spin this into a publicity event as well, probably by broadcasting some of the wierder resumes/applications.
In the end I think this could be a good first step to addressing some of the marketing/promotion issues that have been well documented on this very forum. That said, it's going to take a lot more then a desk jockey's yearly salary to fix the current disparity in how WS promotes itself. If they are serious, they will need to commit some serious dollars to hash out what the exact solution is that they are trying to achieve.
Of course, promotion only goes so far. Hopefully they are also taking a strong look at future acquistions and how a program is deemed "Adult Swim" material.
Call me when they're looking for a schedule manager.
Lafftastic. You sir, are the winner! :D

Call me when they're looking for a schedule manager. What? A comment about the schedule? With no suggestion schedule from the schedule pimp?
FYI, the schedule people are Mike Lazzo and Kim Manning. Just wanted to throw that in.
Hopefully now they will have better packaging when whoever takes the reigns...
I don't think the marketing manager has much to do with the packaging. Just general promotion of products on and off the network, and things like conventions and upfronts.

It sounds like a great idea because they will get someone who is very qualified for the job.

WS is full of themselves. Why in the world would they asked the regular fan base who has no real grasp on WS in the real world? Stop wasting our time with stupid blocks or cards like this.

Most of the audience doesn't have a real grasp, however, Adult Swim gets up to a million viewers some nights. Thus, they are bound to get the attention of some folks who are qualified. Posting an opening on Turner Jobs only generates so much knowledge of the position. By broadcasting the annoucement, they cast a much much wider net. They still may not catch many quality applicants, but in the end they only need one person. By casting a wider net, they increase the chances of landing the best person.
I'd love to apply, but I'm a Meteorologist in law school and I doubt that's what they are looking for on a resume.

Publicity Stunt, cry for help? How about.... they're just trying to get the word out? I think that sounds correct.

There's also a job open for S&P Manager of Acquired Programming.
^^^^^^ that job has an interesting description. "Must be comfortable with discussing television content that includes sexual situations, profane language, and graphic violence in a professional manner." Can you imagine what those conversations must be like? "We think she's showing just enough of her breasts to retain the shot but her ****oris also appears to be visible." and then bickering back and forth about it. Haha.
That's a position we want dissolved, not filled.

Marketing? Manager? I have definitely develop a Dilbert attitude, and these two words designate a person who's job it is to interfere with people who are actually doing work. None the less, who wouldn't want the job?

No, it just needs to be filled by one of us (or Kyle Pope.)
"Honestly, I don't think anyone is going to be offended by all hardcore sex in this episode..."
...probably get fired in under two weeks, but oh well.

Watch it there. Most companies would crash and burn without a capable marketing manager.
I suppose I have the education to apply for this position, but probably not quite enough experience.

I'm getting a major in marketing, and I love Adult Swim, the only problem? I don't have that major in marketing yet. :( Otherwise I would love to apply for that job at Adult Swim. If you all look at turnerjobs.com, you can see that they have an internship program. I'm definitely going to try to get into that when I get in junior year of college. It would be a dream just to be working for Cartoon Network. ::inserts images of me doing slave jobs for Williams Street::

My question is why did they announce the job before the official posting date? It doesn't make too much difference, but I don't see why they either didn't start accepting applications from the beginning or just wait until today to advertise it.

you know this makes perfect sense from a logical position, the last thing WS wants is some know-nothing suit who focuses more on focus groups than the fandom itself, I mean lord knows what happens when some suits who have plenty of book smarts but no actual business sense takes over, theory and actual practice are two different things, there's a difference between knowledge and wisdom

Damn straight.
I'd love to see the card that went with that announcement:
We'd like to introduce the new head of BS&P at CN
He's long been one of the most outspoken critics of CN Policy
and he made us cry
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Kyle Pope, Head of the Board of Standards and Practices
[we bet he's gone in two weeks]

Yes, but I thought of it before IM'ing you.
I'm totally gonna tell Kyle about it the job opening though this Friday at the local anime store. With any luck, he'll actually submit a resume.
