So did they do any time cuts to FLCL #6 this time around? It still ended late and pushed everything back a few minutes, but was it quite as many minutes as last time?
The fact that this episode still gets to be well over 22 minutes (-commercials) while everything else has been more trimmed recently (credits and previews in Bebop, for example)... well, it's really inconsistent. I'm all for FLCL, but I'd really like to know where they're coming from here.

They don't like cutting the show content. When it comes to the OPs/EDs they're expendable.

They don't like cutting the show content. When it comes to the OPs/EDs they're expendable.A good policy. But it's still kinda weird to let one show go so much longer than the others. I figured that maybe since they've been cutting down on time lately -- more endings shortened, no eyecatchers, more previews removed -- they'd be cutting down on this as well. I'm glad they didn't. If it makes sense to them, then whatever...

Ouch @ ASA ratings, but I gotta say, how did Trigun beat FLCL? Doesn't Trigun come on at like 1:30am? Wow,thats pretty darn sad when the last show on the block (that airs at a time where barely anyone is up when compared to 12am) beats Fooly Cooly. I dont care if it was the last episode of Trigun, it was the last episode of FLCL, so someone please understand how this happened? Did people finally realize that FLCL is crap or what? Or am I missing somthing? By the way, yay for Trigun!

Maybe the low ratings for ASA is because right now, we are middle of Prom Season for most of the teenagers that are out on Saturday nights. But that is my opinion. But, hey I watched both nights.

So, they're hiring someone to market AS better. About 3 years too late, but better late than never.
Ya think whoever they hire can work on Toonami as well? It'd be nice to actually see a promo for Astro Boy more than 1 week before it airs.

The ratings were for last week. Episode 5 of FLCL. Episode 26 of Trigun. Not one of the better endings to a series though. Don't know how it got to #3.

I still see plenty of Inu Yasha promos and I did see a Wolf's Rain promo last week that wasn't on Saturday. If the ratings are dropping, that's not a good thing and only so much blame can be put on the promos.
Promos can only get you so far. Promos can get people to tune in for a week, but once they actually tune in the show itself is its own best promotion. If once the people have tuned in they like the show enough, they'll watch again the next week. If they don't, they won't. More promotion may equal more ratings over the short term, but over the long term, the show has to carry itself.

I was thinking more along the line of...how flashy and noisy it was compared to WR and Inu's, it stuck out more with an annoying alien voice shouting inconsistent lyrics. I'm not placing blame on the promos or anything.

Speaking of Astro Boy, there happened to be a statue of him in the case w/ the AS marketing applactation. Yet it still boggles me, if WS hates anime, old anime for that matter, then why is Astro Boy in the case?

That is true, but this was an ASC promo. Thus it should've had an ATHF figure or something similar to that. Not a show that is no way related to AS or Japanese Anime for that matter. That boggles me the most. Is there some sort of secret meaning behind that picture to piss off ASA fans, or did that happen to be on purpose?

Right now I'm majoring in marketing, and I love Adult Swim. Gosh damn, can't they hold this position for me a few years later. :)
Anyway, yes they seriously need to improve how Adult Swim is marketed. I mean a new Futurama commercial? Um, everybody in the USA probably knows that Futurama/Family Guy are on Mondays-Thursday, while I wouldn't be surprised if some people didn't know that Adult Swim is on Saturday as well.
Also, I think Adult Swim needs to move into format number four soon. They only make cards sparingly nowadays, and little to no effort are put into them. Now in the commercial breaks it's "Adult Swim" on a truck, a tombstone, etc. Lame. My reccommendation, is they keep aspects of the card (job announcements, rating reports, acquisition announcements) in some new interactive form. Then they return a format similar to "Old People" or "Safety Tips." Heck, I don't even think of swimming anymore when it comes to adult swim, I kind of miss that. :(
Still the block is great, but with a new format (hopefully by the end of this year) and better advertisement, it will be better.

I seriously doubt there is any secret meaning to piss off ASA fans. Perhaps the folks making the promo like Astro Boy. Or perhaps it was to get some action-type representation into the commercial since I assume the marketing person would market all of Adult Swim (I haven't actually seen the promo yet though). Just because some ASC folks who may be extra vocal hate anime, doesn't mean all the ASC people hate it.

I don't know if this as been brought up before but, what would happen if ASA and ASC just...switched nights?
Nin-Nin69
05-31-2004, 03:15 AM
I know they have that giant Big O statue in their headquarters, but you guys pointed out other stuff similar to this in the past. So I just wanted to know if that was by accident or had a secret meaning like the others.
Edit: Switching nights sounds like a grand idea. Better yet they shouldn't tell anyone when they're going to do it to shock those that tune into Futurama and find out that Inuyasha or Case Closed is on. :p
I think the Astro Boy statue was used because 1) Job applications are usually on windows and 2) whoever takes said position is gonna have the majority of their work on ASA (perhaps Toonami).
Then again, they could've used the Big O statue or their Gundam too. I guess they thought their little window casing looked cool or something.
Also, was that E.G. Daily as the Birthday Lady?
EDIT: Am I the only one who finds it weird that Futurama got 510,000 viewers while Aqua Teens got 501,000? It seems like a suspicious rounding of numbers...

We're headed towards summer, the season that television viewers typically leave the house.
We're in the 'summer movie' season, with blockbusters coming out fairly rapidly. Perfect for enjoying on the weekends.
Saturday is the low watch day for television.
Hmmm...
Anyway, sweet Futurama promo, even if it was hardly needed.

On the whole ratings thing.. Ugh.. I think comparing ASA to ASC is an unfair comparison. ASC has been around for how long now, and ASA has been around for like a month, and it's only got two new shows on the block.
I think a fair way to see if ASA is good, is to compare it's ratings to what was there before, which would be SVES: Kenshin, DBZ, .hack and Knights of the Zodiac.. and If the ratings have improved, I'd consider it good. Of course, you always want to improve.. But I think this would be a good first comparison for ASA, what it replaced. :D

Maybe viewers don't like falling asleep, so they don't watch Wolf's Rain*.
And the Inuyasha ratings have always been rather wavering.
Seems like AS takes any opportunity to get a cheap shot at Action in any of their cards whenever an excuse is available.
I'm sure someone could put what I said in an optomistic tone (i.e. "perhaps the nature of the show to progress the story at the pace that it does is too off-putting to mainstream audiences"), but that just wouldn't be my style.

Yay, Williams Street. Make a new promo for a show that's not going anywhere... when you have a show premiering Saturday. Good job!

If any nights got flipped, it should be Toonami & AS going to Fridays and the Friday preteen lineup goes to Saturdays. The preteen crowd isn't going to be partying but rather staying at home even on Saturdays. The AS audience is more likely to be home on Fridays than Saturdays. But that's no guarantee either. The Anime Unleashed block ceased Friday night encores because of low ratings.
Still, the Saturday slide is disturbing. But it will take some time for Saturday AS to pick up. There still are interested people out there who don't know about AS Saturdays. The real heretical thinkers, though, are going to say there's no point in presenting adult-level animation on Fridays or Saturdays so leave those nights to the preteens. (^_*)

Yay to airing Case Closed promos during Futurama's commercial break.
I wonder if the promotion 'problem' is due to misunderstanding of their shows. Comedy can generally do ok with last minute promotion. Why? Because they're episodic. People can watch any episode and decide whether they'll like the show.
For some anime, that can work. FLCL's short enough, Lupin III's episodic for the most part. But I know several people that missed a few episodes of WHR's beginning (how they didn't know I have no idea) and just decided to not watch till the second run.

Heh, WS wants the Pistons to win.
You know, since they're able to make a new South Park episode, like, the day before it's supposed to premiere, shouldn't WS be able to make a month's worth of cards in 1 day?
Anyone notice the IY stencil on the CC closing card?

Anyone notice the IY stencil on the CC closing card?I noticed that too. In fact, it appeared on last week's cards as well. I'm guessing that either WS doesn't have an idea yet of what to use for CC's fourth stencil or they purposely are including a IY stencil as a way of torturing the IY fangirls/fanboys.
WS has 5 stencils (that they use for the CC packaging), so that's no excuse.
